Using PPC iBook as Client with OS X Snow Leopard Server

Hey, I am interested in purchasing a mac mini server edition as a home server for all of my family, and in addition to several intel macbook pros, we have a couple of Power PC macs.
Is it possible to use the power pc macs (all running 10.5 leopard) as clients for the server? I want to be able to make them sync home folders with a user on the server.

When you set up your Mini server, in Server Admin you go to the Open Directory service and then you can use the wizard to create an Open Directory Master (ODM). Once you have that setup you can then bind your clients using Directory Access in the Utilities folder (up to 10.5) 10.6 is located in /System/Library/CoreServices/ or through the Accounts pane in System Prefs under Login Options. You can then use that utility to "bind" to the ODM using the IP address of the ODM or the DNS name. If you are setting up a fake home network, you should setup DNS first on the Mini so you have a FQDN to resolve to for your clients. Then you can create users and groups in Workgroup Manager and assign the accounts to be Mobile users and have their settings sync'd to the servers home directory folders for your users. You will need to create a share on the server and then enable as a Share Point is Server Admin and then set it to Enable Automount. Then under the home directory tab in WGM you can set the user home dirs to be in the share you created.
So steps:
Update Server for all updates
Set up DNS
Create ODM
Create Share, set as automount
Create users in WGM, point to share for home dir
-Add users to group
-Set up Preferences for group and enable Mobile for sync services.
Bind clients to ODM
Login using mobile or network accounts, sync files and folders based on your prefs.
Hope this helps,
-JL

  • Windows VNC clients cannot connect to Snow Leopard Server native VNC server

I am resurfacing the following related comment made in another post that discusses the same issue I am having with VNC on Snow Leopard. This is still an issue and I cannot connect to our Xserve's Snow Leopard Server with a VNC client on Windows.
I don't want to install another third party VNC server onto our SL Server, and am looking for a VNC client for windows that will connect to our SL Server.
    Does anyone have any solutions?

Re: Newbie: Connect Windows -> OSX Server
Posted: Nov 4, 2009 9:26 AM in response to: Antonio Rocco
I would politely disagree. Yes, definitely, the Mac 'Screen Sharing' app works a treat, and Apple Remote Desktop.app works as well, but I am coming from a Window's PeeCee.
For me, connecting to my 10.5(.8) Server via tightvnc gives 'Server did not offer supported security type!". Using RealVNC to this machine states "No matching security types Do you wish to reconnect to ... ?" a telnet to this AppleVNCServer service (port 5900), shows RFB 003.889 *, or Remote Frame Buffer Major 3, minor 889.
Also, connecting to multiple 10.6(.1) Clients with Tightvnc correctly asks for a password but then hangs at "Status: Security type requested". Using RealVNC opens, connects, asks for authentication, and exits. Telneting to this AppleVNCServer service (port 5900), also shows RFB 003.889 *.
The Current Version of the protocol is supposed to be 3.8, that is Major version 3, minor version 8. Not 80 or 800 but Eight). http://www.realvnc.com/docs/rfbproto.pdf and I believe that tightvnc only supports up to version 3.7.
On each station I have installed the 'old' OSXVnc.app as a service (to a unique port). OSXVnc utilizes protocol 3.3 and I can control them successfully, but that is of my own doing because of this issue.
Now JollysFastVNC works a treat to any machine I have EVER tried to connect to. I have not tried COTVNC or any of the others (too slow for me, when they wer e around)
Also, I just noticed that RealVNC states that their free and personal version will not connect to Mac OSX (x86 and PPC) but the Enterprise one will. I just Dl'ed the Enterprise Viewer and it gave essentially the same thing ('protocol is not valid' message, even after it asks for a password). Anyway, I am not here to hijack this thread, just trying to keep the info flowing and open.
Maybe I am the only one with these problems but the bottom line is I cannot use Real or Tight, or UltraVNC to administer my server or clients as long as AppleVNCServer gives out the 003.889 protocol version.

    * The ProtocolVersion message consists of 12 bytes interpreted as a string of ASCII characters in the format "RFB xxx.yyy\n" where xxx and yyy are the major and
minor version numbers, padded with zeros.

Searching on the net brought me to the same solution that Mr. Hoffman found as well, I was a bit skeptical at first but since he recommended it, and all my other attempts failed, it was a last resort and I have some additional notes of my own for a successful solution. Read the two links below first before doing anything, as they contribute to the solution in tandem.

I should probably just create an entirely new post with all of the steps that worked for me, but it's rather straightforward nonetheless.

  • IP Addresses with Airport and Snow Leopard Server

I have DNS running on my MacMini Server with a static ip address of 10.1.0.201, the dns resolves within the network. But I get a double NAT issue, I believe this might be a result of how I have setup the IP addresses.
My DSL router ip address is 192.168.1.254
    My Airport
    IP Address 192.168.1.1
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    Router 192.168.1.254
    DNS 194.72.0.114
    The airport DHCP is 10.0.1.2 - 10.0.1.200
I think I should reassign IP addresses so that they are in the same subnets is that true?
    Should the Airport TCP/IP be
    IP Address 10.0.1.1
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    Router 192.168.1.254
    DNS 10.0.1.201
    The airport DHCP is 10.0.1.2 - 10.0.1.200
    LDAP server.home.net

Okay tried that and it didn't work, should I have the whole network on 192.168. is that the better approach?
    Cheers Andrew

  • Lion client snow leopard server

I had 30 macbooks running 10.6 authenticating to a snow leopard server.  All worked really great.  15 of the laptops were stolen and now I am in the process of replacing them. However, I am finding the macbook is no longer made and I will need to use a macbook pro.  Macbook pros come with lion installed.  Will Lion clients authenticate to a snow leopard server? Can I create home directories on the the server for lion clients as I have done with my snow leopard clients.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.

    Hi
"Will Lion clients authenticate to a snow leopard server?"
Yes. Snow Leopard Server will support 10.5, 10.6 and 10.7 Client OS.
"Can I create home directories on the the server for lion clients as I have done with my snow leopard clients?"
Yes. AFAIK home folders are not dependent on the OS version in any appreciable way. Granted there are some very minor differences but as long as the Desktop and Library folders exist within the parent container and are read/writable for that user that's all there is to it.
    HTH?

  • Are there any problems with Snow Leopard Server (Xserve) and PPC Clients

    Hi,
are there any problems identified yet with Snow Leopard Server, installed on a Xserve and PPC Clients running Mac OS X Tiger and Leopard?
Currently I have a Xserve Intel running Leopard Server and about 12 Mac Minis PPC running Mac OS X Tiger and Mac OS X Leopard. The Xserve serves services like DNS, OpenDirectory, Software Update Server, NetBoot, etc. All users have Home Directories stored on the Xserve.
Now I want to install Snow Leoaprd Server on the Xserve, but I wonder if there are any problems using the PPC Clients? I have read something like this on a german website.
    Thanks!

We've actually found that the Server 10.6.3 DVD does an amazingly smooth job of upgrading 10.5.8. We've been upgrading our production servers and nothing has gone wrong yet. Snow Leopard employs an archive and install method of upgrading which results in an install which is very close to a clean install. So it's been very convenient for us because our servers are used as Windows PDCs and it's a pain in the *** to have to re-join all PCs to the domain if we start from scratch.

  • Tiger PPC clients with Snow Leopard Server

I installed Snow Leopard Server (10.6.4) on an XServe.
DNS - AFS - DHCP are set up correctly and have been checked several times.
Clients have an AFP automount for network home directory. This share point is set up correctly as well and has been checked by Server's gurus.
Everything is fine for Leopard clients but when it comes to connect to the Server with Tiger clients (PPC 10.4.11) something strange happens :
    - the first connection is correct and the home directory mounts normally
    - when the user disconnects and tries to connect a second time the folder home directory is not mounted and therefore the user can't have access to his/her home
    - although it's possible to mount the folder home directory using the "Connect to server…" command and then choose the user's home directory folder this isn't very handy with young students
I have done extensive researches on Apple's documentation and on the forums but nobody seems to mention such a problem.
Any idea what's wrong ? Already encountered the same issue ?
    Any help would be appreciate

We have reported an automount bug which "may" be related to your problem to Apple. Our symptoms occurred in Leopard 10.5.8 and also in Snow Leopard 10.6.2 and resulted in user's seeing a message "You are unable to log in to the user account <account> at this time." This was due to an apparent problem in Mac OS X when reusing a share via automount.
In our case we found that the period of time during which login is denied can be reduced by editing the file /etc/autofs.conf on the Mac and reducing the value of AUTOMOUNT_TIMEOUT.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can I use Snow Leopard Server with Windows clients?

Mainly for e-mails and calendars. I have small office with 12 windows computers from XP to Win 7 and MS Office from 2003 to 2007. Will Snow Leopard Server work with that?

Can Mac OS X Server do this?  Sure.
You're going to be learning a whole lot about running a server, regardless.
You really need to sort out what you have here and where you want to be, and how to upgrade or replace yor migrate your environment, and before you add the substantial increase in complexity of serving Windows from Mac.  If you can't get off of Office circa 2003 or similarly old software, what are you going to do when you find, say, an incompatibility, or a need to migrate mail clients?     Who are you going to call for help?
I'd guess that Small Business Server (SBS) is likely your best target here.
AFAIK, Exchange Server (which I'm guessing is what you're using) supports larger mailboxes in newer releases.
Look at the sustaining costs for what you're considering purchasing, too.  How much it'll cost to configure, deploy and maintain the box and the network.  Up-front costs are an obvious consideration, but maintaining many boxes and many versions itself introduces costs.
The arrival of Lion Server next month does not change my opinion.   (And I'm not usually suggesting Windows and Windows Server boxes, either.)  (And with the arrival of Lion and Lion Server, I'll follow my usual approach and not look to upgrade to the first release of that (or any other) new platform, if there are business-critical functions and services involved.  You need time to debug and test the deployment.)

  • SMB Slow connection with upgrade to SnoW Leopard and Windows Clients.

    <pre>
    Dear,
I have now upgraded my MAC OS X LEOPARD 10,5,8 to new SNOW LEOPARD 10,6,2 and if some problems disappear I have a newer big one !
Now every time a Windows CLient try to connect to a SMB Share of SL server that take a long time about 10-15 seconds to open after that depending on client OS that could be nice for a moment (windows 7 and XP) or browsing stay very slow like for 2003 server connecting to Share on S.Leopard.
    Could you please help me.
My SL are the main SMB share computer with all data it is connect like other clients to AD (SBS2003).
I have a SBS2003 server that are Master of Domain
and a Server 2008 acting like Terminal Server also member server of domain.
Here are kind of log I receive from SMBD.LOG: I suppose the Credentials problem when connecting are my explanation but how to avoid that !

  • Using ms office 2008 for mac home & student edition with snow leopard serv

    Hi all,
I have a very particular question.
I have a new small business starting up and we want to make full use of leopard and snow leopard server in our infrastructure. We also want to use os x for all our client machines.
We want to use ms office 2008 for mac as our main offfice software but i believe we don't need all the uses or festures of the business edtion and i need to seek good advice and clarity on this.
We won't ever use any microsoft exchange servers but instead willl use the apple mail servers and all the other apple server services.
My question is, based on the fact that we will have an all apple mac os x backend and client frontend but want to use the ms office for mac as our business software, and also based on the fact that we wont use the "Build your Brand clip art, Build your skills by lynda.com, the Remote Desktop for mac 2, the Microsoft Exchange Server Support and the Microsoft Windows sharepoint services support, do we really need to go for the business edition? Can we not just use the home and student edition and get the same functionality using everything else apart form what we listed as we wont need these?
The other question is, the Entourage 2008, Web services Edition, will this work with an apple backend instead of ms exchange server?
Kind regards and thanks for your wise advice,
    Neil Watson

    Thanks, Kurt--I understand now.
One reason I was alarmed was that evidently when the tech installed Office 2008, something went awry with either the key installer or the key code, because when I finished the first two updates (12.1 and 12.2), I tried to open Entourage to see if the problem I'd been having was resolved. Instead of opening, Office gave me a message that my product key was invalid!  I did find the product key, and called the tech, who will come by to see what's wrong (he's an honest guy, so I'm sure it's a legitimate error of some kind, not a pirated copy). But the thought of installing two pages of updates and maybe running into the same glitch every time made me blanch.  So I'm glad to know that Microsoft is still doing Service Packs for 2008!

  • Lion clients with Snow leopard Server

Are there known issues with a Snow Leopard Server Mananging Lion Clients.  I currently manage 40 IMacs in two labs
all running Snow Leopard, the only services I use on the Mac Server are Open Directiory, Print Services, AFP, and FireWall services
the Server is a Mac PRo with 2x3.2 Ghx quad-Core Intel Xeon Processor and 32. GB RAM

Snow Leopard can't serve AFP devices to Lion clients out of the box.  There seems to be a workaround, but I haven't gotten it working myself yet.

  • How to connect Lync 2013 client with OCS 2007 R2 Edge server

    Hi,
We have OCS 2007 R2 Edge server for external & OCS 2007 R2 FE Server for internal access in our environment.
We able to access internally Lync2013 clients with OCS 2007R2 server, however from external we cannot access Lync2013 client with OCS2007 R2 server.
Is there any patch or registry key trick to access OCS from lync2013 client externally? We cannot immediately migrate to Lync2013 server from OCS.
    Any help
    MD

    Hi,
I suggest you still use OCS 2007 R2 client to login OCS 2007 R2 Server untill finishing migration to Lync Server 2013, as using Lync client with OCS 2007 R2 Server will offer a pretty limited experience.
Here is a great blog about Lync 2010 Client unsupported with OCS, it is for Lync 2010 client but similar for Lync 2013 client:

  • Will Windows Outlook clients be happy with Snow Leopard Server Mail Server?

Our network at work has a Windows SBS 2003 server - and 40+ XP PCs running office 2003 (and outlook 2003).
Can I set up Snow Leopard Server so that the Outlook 2003 clients will be able to use contacts, calendars and mail etc from the mac (mini) that we would purchase for this?
I'd love to get everyone on Mac here, but we can't cos our core application is windows only and we would still need the MSSQL server. I know - we could install parallels or virtualbox for the windows apps but that is extra expense, and tbh I don't think our users could cope.
    Thanks

    Hi
+"Can I set up Snow Leopard Server so that the Outlook 2003 clients will be able to use contacts, calendars and mail etc from the mac (mini) that we would purchase for this?"+
For mail yes. For calendars you will need 'assistance' using 3rd-party applications or helper utilities. The iCal Admin manual has more details of what is available:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iCalServerv10.6.pdf
Page 12. For Addresses/Contacts consult the Address Book Server Admin Manual for more details:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/AddressBkServerv10.6.pdf
Page 12. I don't see anything specifically listed so you may have to search for these yourself unless someone else posts with something more specific that works?
If you're expecting Exchange-like functionality you will be disappointed. If you really must have the functionality you're used but also want to move to the mac platform a better prospect (IMO) would be Kerio Mail Server:
    http://www.kerio.com/connect
Depending on what other services you may or may not want you may not necessarily need OSX Server? Then again you could as easily install KMS on a Windows or Linux box instead. In which case why swop from Exchange?

  • Snow Leopard Server and PPC clients

    Just three short questions :
Has anyone managed to have Tiger PPC 10.4.11 accounts on Snow Leopard Server 10.6.4 ?
If yes, have this clients a network home directory on the Server ?
Have you encountered any trouble with these Tiger's clients ?
You don't have to post a long reply. Just answer yes or no and that way I would know if I've made a mistake or if there is a bug in Snow Leopard Server.
Thanks in advance for all your answers.

    Hi
    Ditto with Jeff
+"Has anyone managed to have Tiger PPC 10.4.11 accounts on Snow Leopard Server 10.6.4?"+
Yes. Lots of times. Also had 10.4, 10.5 and 10.6 clients logging in with network accounts on a 10.4 Server.
+"If yes, have these clients a network home directory on the Server?"+
    Yes.
+"Have you encountered any trouble with Tiger clients?"+
    No.

  • 2 Clients with Production Role in Production server , possible ?

My company has implemented 2 Systems SAP Landscape with one development and one production server. So far , we have one client in Production server been configured with Production role and one more is configured with customizing role.
If possible to configure the client with customizing role in production server to production role ? I tried but the syatem always tell me that a client with production role is already exist.
    Kindly advise .
    Thanks.
    Leon

    Hi, Rohit :
Once again . Thanks for your input .But , I really can't try what you are suggesting here as my production system is running 24 hours per day and I can't really take the risk by just trying open and close the existing client with production role .  Based on your 1st reply , you said that Production system is possible to have 2 clients with production role . If it is so , there should be settings that I could configure to achieve this rather than trying  to reconfigure the existing client with production role.
    Thanks.

At this point, you can no longer download Lion (10.7) from the App Store, only Mountain Lion (10.8) - make sure all your applications are fully compatible if you decide to upgrade.
Yes, you can restore 10.6 using your restore disc should you wish to - and the App Store (not ITunes) will have a record of all your purchases, since it's linked to your AppleId.
