Using Printer Remotely from Airport Extreme

Hi
I have re-arranged my house recently and now my printer is in a separate room from my study.
My Aiport Extreme is in my study along with my Mac Pro.
I want to be able to use the printer in the separate room of course so I'm wondering how best to do that?
I guess I need a printer server with wireless capability but which one to get?
Maybe I could use an Airport Express as a printer server?
The printer I have is a Brother HL-5240.
Thank you.

Hi, pa_t_r_i_ck.
If you have an AirPort Express, you could plug the printer into its USB port and share it wirelessly over your network:

Edit: This isn't just an Express feature; AirPort Extremes and Time Capsules support this too.

  • Why can't I print remotely through Airport Extreme or Airport Express?

I am currently on a WEP-protected network and can no longer print remotely. (The Airport Express worked fine on my last network which wasn't WEP protected). I can't even get the Airport Utility to find either my Airport Extreme base station or my Airport Express. I cannot remove the WEP protection from the network. I have tried plugging the printer into the Airport base station directly and still no printing. Why does the problem seem to be connected to WEP protection and what can I do about it?

The WEP key has to entered onto the Airport Express through the Admin Utility. Find the key on your router, and then copy and paste the key into Express. If that doesn't work, try putting a $ in front of the WEP key on the Express.

  • How can I fax using my rendezvous printer, wirelessly via Airport Extreme?

I am trying to fax a files from my G4 PowerBook, using my printer, which is setup as a rendezvous printer, via my Airport Extreme Base Station. However, I can't get the fax program to find the printer, when it scans. It only allows me to use the Internal Modem or Bluetooth. How can I send a file to the printer and then use the printer to fax?
    Thanks. Wade

Got it - the problem is setting up and or using the modem inside the printer. The Canon website specs for that printer does say OS X compatible, but if Canon support is telling you it won't work I imagine that part of the driver that runs the dialog box and dialer isn't implemented in the Mac version. Just guessing here.
They cost $49 but you could get this USB modem from Apple and fax directly from your Mac without printing but that would be a shame having another modem in your printer.

I guess you could ask Canon if that's the reason it won't work, and if so when they plan to update the Mac driver to use the modem. You might get an unsatisfactory answer, though!

  • Can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 Wireless Printer with the AirPort Extreme Base. The printer is NOT connected at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, and is placed in another room. It worked just fine with my previous router (Linksys WRT54G). Help me!

    Hey Guys!
I just got my AirPort Extreme Base, but I can't use my HP Deskjet F4580 wireless printer with it.
The printer is not connected to the AirPort Extreme's USB port. It is placed in another room, and I'd like to use it (the printer) wirelessly (not connected to the USB port os the AirPort Extreme), as I used to. There is no place for the printer close the AirPort Extreme. It worked just fine with my previous wireless router (Linksys WRT54G). I'm very disappointed with the AirPort Extreme Base Station because of that!...
    Can you help me? Please?!
    Thanks Folks!

This must be a tough one, no suggestions at all.

Can I use my iPad with airport extreme to retrieve files from a USB connected hard drive?

Yes, I believe so. Please check out the NetPortal app. I don't have an iPad, but I use it on my iPod Touch to access files on my Time Capsule. It is available from the iTunes App Store.

  • Can I boost the DSL signal using my 1st Generation Airport Extreme or Express? Also, can I get wireless printing?

Can I boost the DSL signal using my 1st Generation Airport Extreme or Express?
I just moved into a house where they have ATT DSL and it is really slow in my room.  I am hoping that I don't have to purchase a booster and I might be able to use my Airport Extreme or Express to boost it.  I don't think they want my Extreme as their router, though.  They are PC.
I am also hoping that I can set up a wireless printing situation in my room using the Express or Extreme.
I am running 10.4.11 on my old MacBook Pro laptop, 10.5.something on my old desktop (MacMini).
Thanks for any help ahead of time,
    Carole

Unfortunately, this won't work especially if you want the connection between the routers to be wireless. The two are just not compatible for configuring an extended network. However, it could work if you can have them interconnected by wire. In that case, you could configure them into a roaming network.
I don't think they want my Extreme as their router, though.  They are PC.
This shouldn't be an issue as the AirPorts support wireless clients regardless of which operating system they are running.

  • Is it possible to use time capsule or airport extreme as a wireless hard drive for iphone?

Is it possible to use time capsule or airport extreme as a wireless hard drive for iphone.
I would like to strem movies from the hard drive to iphone.
I have already seen the Goflex Stellite, which works this way.
Is there any other device that could do this?

I did a typo. My current computer is a 2010 1/2 iMac.  The stand alone monitors are still out of my price range so I'm looking for other options. By buying an external hard drive and a broken iMac, I'm still ahead. Still, if I understand you right, the 27" 2010 and earlier iMacs  would be possiblities.
Are there adapters that would allow me to run a 2011 and newer iMac as an external monitor from my 2010 1/2. There are so many adapters out there these days.

  • HT4356 I have an HP 4500 printer connected to airport extreme with usb.  All our portable notebooks print via air but cannot get iPad to be recognized for printing.  Do I really have to have one of the other HPs listed?

    Rufus Cat-
Even if it was compatible, AirPrint does not work through a USB link, only Ethernet or WiFi.
I do not see your HP 4500 listed on Apple's list of AirPrint compatible printers.  <iOS: AirPrint 101>  Therefore you need to take another approach.  To start, I suggest you download the free HP App, ePrint Home & Biz.  It has limitations, but should get you printing with your existing setup.
There are other printing Apps with more features such as Print n Share and PrintCentral, but they can only be accessed from within other Apps that have the "Open In" option.
Your best option may be to share your computer's printer as AirPrint over WiFi.  Programs that are reported to do that well are Printopia and FingerPrint.  Your computer must be on and awake any time you want to print.  <Printopia for Macintosh>  <FingerPrint for PC and Mac>

  • Printer supported by Airport Extreme

What All-In One Printer (Printer, Copier, Fax) works with Airport Extreme. I currently have HP Officejet 5610xi All In One Printer but I could not add it on the Airport Extreme Router. Also, I have both Mac and Windows PCs networked via Airport Extreme. I have tried setting up the PCs by bonjour for Windows. Would I have a problem with this kind of network? I am particurlar with print sharing - ie both my pcs and mac should be able to print via APE.

Unfortunately, not all USB printers are compatible with AirPort base stations. In addition, the AirPort's USB port does not support the "advanced" printer functions, like scanning, copying or faxing, of multi-function printers.
To see if your printer is compatible, take a look at this iFelix Unofficial AirPort Printer Compatibility link.
If your printer isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean it won't work, but simply that it has not been verified. iFelix also provides the following workaround for printers not on the list that would certainly be worth a try.
Also you can try this Apple Tech Support article to see if it will help:
o Printer troubleshooting for AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express
Finally, check out this IBM support article to see if the printer you are interested in is listed as having a Postscript or PCL3 interface. If it does, then it will most likely work with the AirPort's USB port. Printers that use the "HP LIDIL" interface must be connected to a computer directly and will not work.

  • What ADSL modem do you advise to use with my new airport extreme? I have tried a basic TP-Link ADSL2  modem and I can't get the configuration working. What modem does Apple recommend?

I am having problems setting up airport extreme.
What ADSL modem do you advise to use with my new airport extreme? I have tried a basic TP-Link ADSL2+  modem and I can't get the configuration working. What modem does Apple recommend?

Ok well I have looked around some more and have found this to be the most up to date official response to my question as seen at this link here:
    http://www.actiontec.com/support/product_details.php?pid=41#q27
Can I Bridge the Actiontec MI424WR router that Verizon provided, when I signed up for FiOS service?
The MI424WR does not have a bridging option, and neither Verizon nor Actiontec support attempting to bridge it.
The desire to bridge the MI424WR is based on a misunderstanding that it is a modem as well as a router. Actiontec does produce DSL Gateways that have a Transparent-Bridging option, which bypasses or disables the router function and allows the Gateway to act simply as a DSL modem, when it is enabled. Many consumers do not realize that with FiOS, the ONT (typically outside the home) is the device that handles changing the FiOS signal from Fiber to either Ethernet or Coax, and that the Router is just a Router, and if it was bridged or bypassed, it would be a device without a function. For most Verizon FiOS customers their service would completely stop if the MI424WR was bridged, because the Video on Demand service is dependent on it to work.
If your ONT is connected to the Actiontec MI424WR router via Coax, the MI424WR is required due to the Coax connection. But if the ONT is connected to the MI424WR via Ethernet, then in most cases some other router can be substituted for the MI424WR, and it can be removed."
So it looks like I will be calling Verizon support to see about getting the Ethernet connection installed and getting another modem...

  • Print remotely from a IPad to a portable / mobile printer.

    Hi
You may be able to advise on something for printing from an IPad. Have searched discussion boards and all the comments are about 12 months old so there may be a fresh solution.
Situation is that my son teaches music at many varied locations, and he wants to print remotely from a IPad to a portable / mobile printer where potentially there is no WiFi.
If a wifi network is needed then he can set up 1 from his IPhone 4.
Unfortunately Apple store staff look at disbelief that you want to print from an IPad whilst you are away from your home wifi network. Is that not the beauty of IPad?
Anyhow is there any after market products that can assist in this situation. Or advise on a compact printer that uses AirPrint, the current printers are bulky, with the current mobile printers from HP and Canon not being capable of solving the issue.
    Thank you

HP makes a product that enables their mobile printers for use with iPad. There is a video here describing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zVfCpT4X84

  • Epson T23 - How to make your printer share on Airport Extreme.

Hello everyone. I hope this info can help anyone within the same situation I was!
I bought an Epson T23 (a cheap printer here in Brazil) to substitute my old Canon iP1300. Everything was fine. I've installed the Epson drivers that came with the CD and both my Macs (iMac 24 and MacBook Black) were printing without problems.
But when I connected the Epson T23 on my Airport Extreme to share the printer over my network, I was very disappointed to discover that the Epson priters DID NOT WORK at all! My old Canon printer worked like a charm over Airport but not the Epson. I've tried every solution Apple had to solve this kind of problem and nothing. I even wrote to Epson Brasil but their support is non existent.
I was already thinking in return the printer to the store when I've discovered an alternate set of printer drivers called Gutenprint on SourceForge. After I installed them, the Epson T23 finally share printed over my Airport Extreme (even though I've used Epson T20 Gutenprint drivers - until the date of this post there are no specific drivers for the T23 series).
    https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?groupid=1537&packageid=273638
So, this is my tip if your having trouble with Epson T23 drivers using Airport Extreme: use Gutenprint.

Estou com o mesmo problema. Se vc puder me dar + informações... Eu não achei o drive no site, não sei bem o q procurar... Vc fez como se estivesse instalando outra impressora?

  • How far away can you connect to the internet from Airport Extreme (802.11n)

How far can i take my Laptop away from Airport Extreme (802.11n) and still have internet connection

    According to:
    http://www.apple.com/au/airportexpress/
They claim the Extreme has a 45m range:
"Suppose you want to connect to the Internet with your PowerBook in an area that lies beyond the 45 metre range of your AirPort Express or AirPort Extreme Base Station"
Will you be using all N devices? G?, B? or a combination?

  • Cannot add printer connected to airport extreme

when i go to add a printer coonected to airport extreme, i can see the printer as a bonjour printer and begin the process of adding printer...when the printer setup utility goes to add driver, the printer setup utility goes into a loop and has to be forced close...i can connect to the same printer with no problem when it is shared from another mac in the house...any ideas???

having the same type of problem. the HP designjet 110plus that we have connected to an airport express disappeared from my printer list sometime after upgrading to snow leopard. cannot add it manually, error -9672. tried uninstalling the driver, rebooting, and reinstalling the driver. nothing.

  • I cannot access my network printer under AEBS(Airport Extreme Base Station)

The current network configuration of me is
    1. AEBS have static IP address. (e.g., 154.123.12.54)
    2. Network printer in my office have static IP address. (e.g., 154.123.12.55)
    3. My iMac is connected to AEBS. And have virtual IP address. (e.g., 10.0.1.201)
The problem is that when I trying to add my network printer on my iMac,
it works. I can find my network printer in the list.
But when I trying to print with that printer, I think any packet is not sent to network printer.
    I think AEBS block them.
How can I use my network printer under AEBS?
I didn't have any problem with my Belkin wireless router.

When you can, take a look at the old AirPort Express and locate the model number in the faint print on the side of the device.
If you see A1084 or A1088, this is an older Express version that is no longer supported by the current version of AirPort Utility that you are using with the new AirPort Extreme.
If that is the case, your Express is at least 6 years old...probably older...so it is about time to treat yourself to a new version with much faster speeds and more features.
