Using Pro/E on a Mac using VMWare Fusion or BootCamp

I have a MacBook Pro:
Processor:2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory: 4 GB 1067 Mhz DDR3
And recently for uni I have had to find a way to get Pro Engineer, a CAD program, running on my Mac. My solution was to buy VMWare Fusion and instal Windows 7 on my Mac so I could then run the CAD program. Once I got that done windows was running well however once I got Pro Engineer installed it was incredibly slow and pretty much unusable.
My question is has anyone got any experience with running this program on a similar machine and can help me solve this problem so I can run the program? Should I use bootcamp instead of VMWare? Would it make a difference?

Yes, I would definitely recommend setting up BootCamp for this - it's relatively painless. (It can create a new partition in the unused space on your OS X disk without erasing the disk.) The BootCamp Assistant has detailed instructions on how to go about setting up a partition and installing Windows on it, but the gist of it is that you have the BootCamp Assistant create a partition for you, then you boot from your Windows install disc and install Windows on that partition. When you've booted into Windows for the first time, pop in your OS 10.6 install disc, and it will install Apple's hardware drivers and utilities for Windows. If you got 10.6 shortly after it came out, the drivers will be version 3.0 for Windows Vista - you'll need to download version BootCamp 3.1 from the Apple support site to ensure full support for Windows 7. (If you have a newer copy of 10.6, it might have the new drivers already - I don't know, as I have an older one.)
I would, however, also recommend keeping VMWare Fusion (assuming you've already paid for it). Once Windows is set up in BootCamp, you can go into Fusion and create a virtual machine that's mapped to it (so you can also use your BootCamp installation as a virtual machine in your Mac if you don't need the full performance of booting into it natively). It should be fairly obvious how to do that - it will probably prompt you automatically. The virtualization also allows for as many different machines with as many OS's as you want - I'm running every version of Windows I've ever had in Parallels, plus a number of free OS's I'm trying out (BSD, Linux, Solaris). In short, it's a good thing to have.

Running win 7 pro on Mac. VMware fusion - Help

Hey Guys,
I bought a mac and well I have been missing a few of my favourite PC programs so I have now installed VMware Fusion and put windows in and I logged into last night really quickly before I went to bed.
A few questions I have if someone can please help me with is :
1. How do I jump across to the windows OS ?
2. Do I need to transfer the app from my external to internal mac HD
3. Do I need winzip or is it still mac or once I goto the windows OS.. I can use normal winzip ?
sorry to ask so many noobish questions I just want to make sure I can run 3 main things from my Pc on the Mac and been told it was through Fusion which looks like the windows OS.
Please can someone help me out with these questions.

Can I use home sharing (on my mac using my other computers library) even if I'm not in a WiFi zone?

I have used Home-Sharing on my Dell Laptop and now my Mac. My mac uses the Dell's library and I was wondering whether I would have to be using the same WiFi code or whether I could be on a different WiFi or even have none and still use it?

You'd need both computers to be connecting to the same wifi network in order to Home Share.

HT2431 How can I best run old CDs written for Mac OS 9 (Classic)on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.7 with VMware Fusion

I have some old CDs of medical drawings and other references that were written for Mac OS 9 (Classic). These are still excellent resources but I now have a MacBook Pro with OS 10.7. I also am running VMware Fusion. How best can I run these programs?

MacBook Pros & OS X Lion don't support classic operation.
Suggest you buy an older Mac that will run OS 9 or run in classic mode while booted into OS X Tiger or below.

Run Windows 8.1 Pro on a SDXC card via VMware Fusion

Hi everyone,
I'm kinda new to the whole Mac story.
Have been using iPhone and iPad from day one, but never could get myself to go off Windows.
Well, a few weeks ago I bought myself a 13.3" MBP (Mid 2014 - 11.1 model).
It's the retina one with a 256GB SSD in it.
Now my question is...
I have a license from work for VMware Fusion 7, and I need some programs to run on Windows.
But I don't wan't to partition my drive and run it via bootcamp, I want to keep my Mac clean.
Does anyone have experience or know if I can run this on a SDXC card?
I would use a 128GB SDXC card with 60MB/s write and 80MB/s read.
Can I stick this SD into the slot, install Windows 8.1 Pro via Fusion on this card and let it run on a decent level?

I took a look into it and you are right.
The read/write speed is much higher and cheaper.
But, like I said, I'm nog willing to share my drive with Windows.
So I'm going to buy a 64GB USB stick (less than 60 euro) and going to install it on that source.
With 64GB I've some extra space for the futher if I need to work with more Windows only programs.

Sharing iTunes on a Mac with VMware Fusion

I want to share my iTunes library on the Mac side of my MacBook Pro with the Windows VMware Fusion machine. I'm hoping to just point the Windows side to my shared Mac iTunes folder. I can see the folder (under Edit...Preferences...Advanced - it shows up as Z:\Music\iTunes) but haven't been able to have the actual songs show up in the Music Library on my Windows iTunes.
Is anyone else doing this?

Need Help Cloning Old Windows XP to Mac with VMWare Fusion

Hello I'm new to the forums and I have been searching all over for a good answer on how to do this.
I have a ton of applications, docs, etc. on my old windows xp machine that I need and I am looking for a way to clone the drive it to my mac that is using VMWare Fusion. I have an external hard drive and have tried acronis true image but apparently that doesnt work. So I am looking for a good step by step process on how to do this.
Also later I want to clone the same windows xp drive to another mac that is using boot camp. will that be the same?

The easiest way would be to put the PC hard drive into an external enclosure and use Disk Utility or a similar tool to create a disk image file that you can copy to the Mac. You may be able to read the PC disk image format and get VMWare to read the resulting image.
Even if you make it that far, I don't think you will be able to get Windows to use it as a boot drive. You will have much more success just creating a new disk image and reinstalling everything with the correct drivers. Then just copy your documents back over using more traditional methods.

How do I share printing between mac and Vmware Fusion?

I am trying to print from mac and from Windows XP installed in a virtual machine via VMWare fusion on my IMac. If I am able to print from Mac then when I switch over to Fusion and try to print it errors stating the the printer is disconnected. If I disconnect the USB and reconnect then it will print. Same with mac if it is printing okay on Fusion and I try to print from mac it acts like it is printing but it is not sent to the printer, if I disconnect the USB and reconnect then it prints. Printer sharing and window sharing is on. Any suggestions?

Why single core only on a MBP13 Core i5 w/ VMware Fusion + Win7 BootCamp Partition

1. When I boot into OS X and launch VMware Fusion running Windows7 on a 2011 MacBook Pro 13" w/ Core i5:
I see only a single core in-use in the Windows 7 CPU performance widget running VMware Fusion using Windows 7 installed in BootCamp Partition?
2. When I boot directly into Windows 7 using the BootCamp Partition on the same MacBook Pro as above:
I see all four cores in-use in the Windows 7 CPU performance widget. Why doesn't VMware fusion use all four virtual cores that the MAcBook Pro 13" Core i5 provides? Core i5 has 2 physical cores but 4 hyper-threads which appear as 4 virtual cores to the OS as I understand it.
Is this expected behavior for this config? Why can't VMware Fusion on OS X see all four virtual cores? I see that the CPU submenu is greyed out under the VM Settings menu? So it appears CPU settings can't be changed for a running VM instance? Any suggestion and pointers would be greatly appreciated.

I think your i5 is 2-cores with 4-threads (the name virtual core for HT is just a way to get 20-35% more per physical core).
And one physical core has to be assigned to Mac.
If you had the i7 4-core / 8-threads, I can see more load balancing.

VMware Fusion Performance: Bootcamp Partition or Virtual Machine?

I'd like to run ArcGIS 9.3 in Windows XP using VMware Fusion. Can anyone comment on the virtues/drawbacks of using a bootcamp partition versus creating a VMware "Virtual Machine"?
With bootcamp partition I can gradually increase the size of the partition as the partition becomes full using Drive Genius, correct?
What about performance?

You cannot "gradually increase the size" of a Boot Camp partition. To change the size you must first delete the existing partition then create a new, larger partition. Doing so will delete the entire Windows system, so be sure to back it up beforehand.

Do I run VMWare Fusion with bootcamp?

I have a copy of WMWare Fusion and am about to install windows. My question when setting up VMWare Fusion's Virtual Machine... is do i place everything on a bootcamp disc/partition?
I'm installing XP Home Edition (store was out of professional version, just testing websites here).

BootCamp does only allow you make one real Windows partition in which you can install either XP or Vista.
There are some tricks that let you make three partition (one OSX and two for Windows), but it's not an easy task.

With Fusion it is very easy to simply make a second Virtual Machine in which you then can install Vista.
Simply start a new Virtual Machine and install Vista.

Logic Pro 8 On Intel Mac Used with PTHD 7.4 WORKS!!!!!!!!!

I have posted earlier that It did not work, But after Hours of trying, it finally Work.
I wanted to be able to use Logic Plugins PLUS all TDM plugins.
If you want to use the Logic Plugins, Create a DTDM track, Output it to ESB 1-8, Then to conect it to TDM you habe to create a DAE track With the input as ESB 1-8 and output to Output 1-2.
My Mackie and 2 Extenders works much better under LogicControl than HUI. A big plus
The Elastic Audio in PT 7.4 is amazing, I was just playing with it for an hour or so, I did not go deep but the sound quality is very convincing. An E stretch to a D sounds like an original D, not like it was rubber pulled.

Can I use windows 7 on my Mac mini 2.1 with bootcamp?

I have a Mac Mini 2.1 running OS 10.5.8, and an unspecified version of bootcamp. Currently using Windows XP. I want to upgrade to Windows 7. Can I do this? If so, do I need 32 bit version or 64 bit version?

Just a heads up, you don't need to run bootcamp to install windows on a Mac (if you want it to be the primary OS)
I have a Core 2 Duo Mac mini running Win7 x64 without any issues. I will check which model it is later.
It has 5 USB, FW 800, and displayport + mini displayport (if that helps identify the model)

Anyone running RH on Mac with VMWare Fusion?

Seriously disgruntled with Microsoft after a weekend
troubleshooting issus on my pc and getting nowhere. I'm at a point
where I either have to buy a new PC running Vista, or make the leap
to Mac. Have talked to a couple of friends who prefer VMFusion to
BootCamp or Parallels, but none of them are technical writers. I
use RoboHelp extensively (will likely be upgrading to RH8 and
generating AIR Help for a new, huge project), and also use the rest
of the Tech Comm Suite quite a bit. Have several customers who I
still have to create manuals for in Word (blah)too. Appreciate any
input as this is a major (and expensive) decision!

Yeah, I noticed that. However, I know there are others
currently running RH on Mac (founds some posts from November). A
year ago, I would've been the last person to ever consider making
the leap to Mac. But after talking to several people who insist
that the kind of setup I'm considering is the best of both worlds,
I'm really giving it some thought. Adobe's "official" support isn't
an issue for me as I've never called them, and worst case scenario,
I will still have my 1-year-old PC running XP to fall back on once
I reformat the hard drive and start fresh with it.
