Using Professional Monitors (Audio) with a 24" iMac

I would like to use a pair of high quality professional audio monitors with my iMac for listening to music at my office. I'm wondering if the analog audio output from the iMac is up to the task or if I should find some way to use the 5.1 DTS digital output and convert that signal to standard audio 2-channel SPDIF (I have a DA converter I could use) before sending the signal to the monitors.
Any advice?

Thanks for the information. One concern I have is that the studio audio monitors I will be using, which are active, are designed to receive a professional balanced +4 dBu line level signal. I doubt the analog output of the iMac is at that level. It is certainly not a balanced signal. Hence, I fear I may experience a signal to noise ratio that is not quite optimum. I can certainly give it a try, given that it will only require some cable adaptors and patching.
I am interested in the digital output of the iMac. I do not understand what Apple means when it states that the Toslink digital output is 5.1 DTS using SPDIF. To my understanding, SPDIF is as 2 channel format, capable of a variety of bit depth/sample rate settings (ranging between 16 bit/44.1 Hz to 24 bit/96k Hz) and is essentially an unbalanced version of the balanced AES3 (AES/EBU) format.
I have a rather nice Lucid DA 2496 digital to analog converter that accepts the standard 2 channel SPDIF and outputs a healthy +4 dBu balanced analog signal - which is exactly what my Quested F11 active audio monitors expect.
Any advive on these issues?

Can't use LINE IN audio with iSight Camera on iMovie 08

I want to record a video, using the internal iSight camera of my iMac, but I want to use the "line in" audio instead of the internal microphone of my iMac. I have tried for hours, and done the obvious things (selecting "line in" under System Preferences). I can record audio perfectly using Sound Studio or other programs, so it's not like the Mac isn't getting the audio. The problem is convincing iMovie to accept the audio of the Line In rather than the internal microphone of the iSight camera.

I've had the same problem, and it seems that this is simply not possible in iMovie... Disappointed!
Instead, having set 'line in' as input under System Preferences, fire up Quicktime Player and choose New Movie Recording under the File menu.
The movie will be recorded using system sound input, i.e. line in. It can then be opened / imported in iMovie for editing et c.
This works for me with the built in iSight on an intel Penryn Macbook Pro.

I am having a problem configuring Audition to allow me to monitor audio with a bluetooth headphone.

I have several bluetooth headsets and I normally have no problem pairing and connecting them to various computers, but I attempted to pair a headset with my laptop running Audition last evening. The transport froze with the play button changed to green. I could not get it to play. When I replaced the bluetooth device with a pair of wired headphones, I was able to get everything to work as normal, other than the fact that I was tethered to my machine.
Is there a proper way to specify to Audition that I would like to route the monitor audio through a bluetooth device?
While the Audition output was failing, I was still able to hear system alerts and various other sounds through the bluetooth device, just not the Audition output, which is what I was working on.
I see some chatter on the forums, but not a lot of solutions for this sort of thing.
By the way, I was using a MacBook Pro from 2012 with 16G with OS X.8.5.

Problems monitoring audio with a m-audio Firewire 410 card

So I have a M-Audio 410 hooked up through the firewire port on my G5, But it geeks out (audio turns to loud noise, strange defects, spinning ball of slowness appears) everytime I try to monitor audio out of final cut, also when I play LARGE quicktime files!!! The card works fine for all other applications I have on my mac, Cubase, iTunes etc... Anyone else have heard of this, or know what to try. I have most of my video on an external drive, a LACIE media drive, which is my only option as I am working with large amounts of video.
I am thinking this is an issue with the bandwith of firewire on the computer. Maybe too much information between the audio card, and accessing the drive through the other firewire port. Any thoughts?

Hello, I was just about to post the following when I saw your recent post, Wondering if you ever found a solution for what you're running into? (BTW, I went to UO a looooong time ago. Go Ducks!)
We'd like enhance the audio end of our edit suite and are thinking of adding an "FireWire 410" from m-audio for I/O. And ProTools.
But we've read here and there in forums that there may be a problem with Firewire I/O (and maybe the m-audio "FireWire 410" in particular?) and confusion with decks like the DSR-11, etc. Disturbs the video on an external broadcast monitor.
One note: we don't think we'd necessarily be sending audio from the DSR-11 to the "FireWire 410" (and on to headphones and speakers) via firewire.
Anyone out there using FCP and the "FireWire 410" who could comment?

Thinking of using Set Up Assistant with your new iMac...

The story so far...
The set up assistant was a nightmare, I plugged the iMac in, switched it on and straight away was asked if I would like to transfer information from another mac (about 40Gb), at this point I was thinking this is great I'll transfer everything and be up and running in about four hours. I opted to transfer all four options (User Accounts, Network Settings, Applications Folder and Files and Folders) clicked go and sat back believing that in the stated 3 hours and 20 minutes I would be up and running. One and a half hours into the transfer and it's flown through everything and it's telling me 'Less than a minute remaining' (the excitement is really building now). 45 minutes later and it's still saying 'Less than a minute remaining' so I decided to call India, sorry I mean AppleCare, and was told that I should give it another hour as the
original time stated was over three hours so I gave it another two hours and 45 minutes (five hours in total) and I was still faced with the 'Less than a minute remaining'. It's time to call India again. I quoted the case number from the first call and 30 minutes later was still none the wiser except I was told how to get out of the transfer screen (just hold the power button for a couple of seconds) and that I should never try transferring Applications. I asked why I was given the option to transfer Applications if it's not advisable to do it and wasn't give any sort of reasonable answer.
During the second call I was taken through the registration process (without using the transfer option) and once I was up and running I found that some of my files had been transfered but I wasn't sure how much. I decided to re-install the OS from the disc's and once I had started doing this I realised that the disc's were going to install over the top of the existing OS but I didn't want to stop the process just in case I screwed things up even more. We decide to go out for something to eat and come back to it later hopefully with a clearer head (I'd been at this for six hours now). When we get back I re-install for the second time but this time used the 'Erase and Install' option and this only takes about an hour. It also takes you right back to the welcome screen and I choose to transfer from another mac again but uncheck
the Applications option. Set up assistant works brilliantly this time and all I have to do is download things like Acrobat, Messenger, etc. Everything is on there that I wanted so when I open Acrobat for the first time all my settings are in there the same is true with everything else I download. It's very useful having the PowerBook next to the iMac to cross check what I need. I finish at 1:30am, what a day.
I am currently writing this on the PowerBook not because of any problems with the iMac but because I can't get the wife off of it now. Out of interest the 500Gb hard drive originally read 465Gb available and once everything was on the iMac there was 425.18Gb available compared to the 1.44Gb available on the PowerBook. Mmmmm, lots of space to play with.

As long as you don't try and take your app's across you should be OK. I think the Apple app's are OK to transfer, it's just the 'third party' app's apparently Adobe is a classic case. They don't store thing's where the mac would expect to find them so even if you can get them across you end up re-installing anyway.

Using my existing HD with the new iMac's USB 3.0

I’m planning on buying the new iMac as soon as it comes out but I noticed that it doesn’t have any USB 2.0 ports and I was wondering if I would be able to use my existing external hard drives since they are USB 2.0.
Will I be able to use my existing USB 2.0 HD with the new iMac using the USB 3.0?

How will it be possible to to use a firewire external with the new iMac

I see the new iMac has four USB 3 ports and two Thunderbolt ports.
I have numerous FW 800 externals I use for back up, Time Machine and so forth (many are less than a year old and were not inexpensive).
When I get a new iMac, what will be the process or procedure to use one or more of those Firewire externals with the new iMac?

Using Front Panel Audio with Fatality Professional

I have a query regarding connections on the Titanium Fatality PCIe.
I have an XFi XtremeMusic PCI card and am considering replacing it with the Titanium Fatality XFi card. A couple of reasons, I like the shrouded enclosure, I like the little XFi LED logo, I want to move away from PCI cards in my system.
But one of the main reasons is to allow me to connect my Intel HD Audio connector to the card so I can use the Headphone/Mic socket on my case. So if anyone has these cards can they confirm that they have an Intel HD Audio connector on them. If so does connecting the headphone to the case socket mute the speakers?

Well, I don't personally have one, but I was under the impression that every X-Fi had one. I know my X-Fi Fatal1ty (original PCI version) included it, and my Recon3D definitely does.
Plus if you check their shop website for the Titanium Fatal1ty Professional than the specs page lists a 2x 5-pin connector for "Intel HD Audio Compatible Front Panel Header" so it most likely does.
I would assume it would mute the speakers only if your case is fully Azalia compliant. By that, I mean the standard (as dictated by Intel) involves the use of two normally-open switches - one each on the headphone and microphone jack - which are closed as a result of plugging something into them. Some cases have these jacks which means it can detect when you plug something in and respond accordingly, but others use cheaper (we're talking differences in cents - not exactly substantial savings, but when you do it thousands of times over it adds up) switchless jacks and simply report them as always plugged in.
Just remember to set up the X-Fi panels to mute the speakers when you plug headphones in, as well as switch the output to headphone mode. You can actually set those two options separately on X-Fis.

Using an external display with a 2006 iMac?

(Scenario in paragraph one, question in paragraph two)
I've got a problem trying to get data off an old iMac, and don't see an obvious solution... I have an old 2006 iMac that's been unused for years, and the display quit working about a year ago. I'm trying to just get the data off that computer, but my current 'main' computer's a MacBook Air that doesn't have an Ethernet port, so direct connection is out. I could try to move a couple hundred GB over wifi, but the wifi in the old iMac is an old wifi standard that takes forever, and tends to error out when transferring data over hours of time (I've tried).
Thus my question: The old iMac has a mini-DVI-out port, but the challenge is how to switch to an external display, when I don't have a display to navigate through settings? Is there a keyboard shortcut, or something? I've looked online, but can't find any solutions. I've got a mini-DVI-to-VGA cable, and a VGA-capable monitor, but when I plug the Mini-DVI into the iMac, to the VGA, nothing happens. I'm guessing I need to go to preferences, and select video-out? But that's impossible (as far as I've tried) with a display to navigate on the iMac.
Some miscellany: Someone suggested Command-F2 for something monitor-switching-related, but that did nothing. Someone at work thought that the signal from the DVI out might not work with the Gateway FPD1760 I'm trying to use as an external display...
Any suggestions/help would be appreciated!

So the various 'F2', 'Command-F7', etc, etc, didn't work. But I did find a simple solution: I used my Fiancé’s MacBook Pro that has an Ethernet port, connected via Command-k, and transferred about 40GB so far. Pretty painless, and I can get dthe data to one of my multiple-TB external drives from her computer. Using her computer hadn't entered my mind...
Disappointing that I couldn't get the video out to work, but at least I'm getting the data off. I'm going to try the 'firewire/Target mode' idea later, when I need to erase the drive, etc.

Monitor audio with M-box

I'm new to final cut pro (well not that new but still)
So if this is a stupid question I refer to the sentence above; is it possible to monitor my audio in fcp with the
M-box 2.
I've read somewhere that it is possible to use pro tools with fcp so maybe it's also possible to use the M-box as soundcard for fcp.

Using Netgear DG834PN router with Airport on Imac with Leopard 10.5.2

Hello,
I recently got an Imac (at christmas) and began connecting wirelessly using a belkin45g with a WEP key, which i have been told does not work correctly with macs.After this router kept disconnecting me, I then decided to change to a netgear dg834pn router, which connected fine at first.
I had to also set up a PC using Vista which connected perfectly, but after i had set up another WEP key for use with both computers, the PC connected perfectly, but the Imac refused to connect, giving me the error message "connection timeout".
I then removed the WEP, but now when i try and connect it still asks me for the WEP key. This was before i updated to 10.5.2, but i still have the same problem. I have to use an ethernet cable to successfully connect. It's a very annoying problem which has caused me to replace the router twice, but to no avail! If anyone has anything that can help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for your frustrations, hopefully it's just a rinky-**** setting and not your router!
1st thing - while you have any connection, you should use Software Update to update to Leopard 10.5.2. if you haven't already done so.
2nd - If you goto Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network you will see a list of your Network "Services." If you are using PPPoE via your DSL Router, then all you need is Built-In Ethernet or Airport to obtain an DHCP IP Address. This sounds like your config right now and it works, but times out.
3rd - While in the Network preferences, I want to show you something: click on Built-in Ethernet once. Then, you will see an Advanced button in the lower-right corner. Click it. Now click the PPP tab and you will see settings. DO NOT change anything - I'm only showing you what I mean by, "Connect automatically when needed, etc." These type of settings should also correspond to your Router.
Translation: What you see here is sorta what you should see in your Router. Make sure your Router doesn't disconnect you after 3 hours, and make sure your connection is "Always On" etc.
Let me know if you keep getting sporatic drops after you attempted these minor things...

Using cassette tape audio with Final Cut Pro & DV footage

I am trying to use the audio from a cassette tape as part of a concert soundtrack. There were lots of sound problems during the concert, and afterward one of the sound guys gave me the audio cassettes he recorded of a church Christmas concert. I digitized the audio cassette using ProTools 7 at 48kHz and it sounds great. Problem is kind of what I anticipated - even if I synch a single note to absolute accuracy, the audio "drifts" out of synch where at the end of a 5 minute clip, the "end" is off by 47 frames. Even if I try and synch up shorter sections, there is still some drift.
I have a soundtrack from my DSR-250; it was not possible to get a feed from the soundboard. I tried adjusting the speed/duration of the audio cassette track - everything lines up better; the sound is still off.
Any hints, recommendations, advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The reason behind not being able to sync the audio from the cassette with the video (thanks for the accurate answer, javabob!) is that audio cassette recorders are not speed controlled during recording or playback like video or DAT tape is. No tape will playback at the exact same speed twice do to many factors, including relative humidity, tape stretch, machine wear, etc. Which is why standard audio cassettes aren't generally used for this type of thing.

Not able to use my Apple Remote with my 24" iMac

I have searched a little high and low for the resolution and it's still not working.
The Infrared receiver appears to show in System Profiler
I tested the remote by holding it in front of the iSight camera and it appears to have the light emitting from it.
I reset the PRAM, SMC and even tried a Safeboot and rebooted normally.
I tested in a different user account with other applications, and even went as far as creating a new user account. Nada. Front Row/iTunes other media players.
Before this is asked, I tried not 1, but 2 brand new 2032 batteries. That is not the case. What else can it be? Is there a plist somewhere that I cannot find? I tried also, disabling the sensor, then reenabling it to no avail.
I'm at my wits end.
This is on my 24" 2.66ghz iMac. The only software installed recently, was Boxee and VLC. This problem occurred before then.
Note: I tried this same remote on my 17" G5 iMac and worked immediately. So I know the remote works.

Kenichi, yes…in system preferences. The option to unpair was not available. The button remained "Pair". After repeated attempts, I gave up. The "disable infrared receiver" has alwahys remained unchecked. I checked it "to disable it", then unchecked it to (in a way, refresh the status of the infrared receiver) and to no avail.

Does A 24inch Monitor work with a 17inch Imac g5

Yes and it will be an exact copy of the iMac's built-in screen. The iMac G3, G4, and G5s do not support extended desktop.

Can a major products company use Professional Edition, not Enterprise for different Pubs?

I am with a new company and I am evaluating whether to recommend Adobe Digital Publishing. Since my first day is a few days away, I would like to not yet say what brand this is, but would like to state an analagous situation. Let's say hypotherically I am Creative Director for a major online Sporting Goods Company, almost household name, let's call it BrySportsOne, and one of the biggest, with millions of users. As I pursue tablet magazines, I want to use different publications to target different segments, giving them the most relevant content. So in addition to my parent BrySports Magazine, I would also want to have individual pubs living alone as individual Apps, such as BasketballGearMag, RunningGearMag, Tennis-To-Go-Mag and more. So my question is, can I do this under professional instead of Enterprise? My company is a major company, but I think I will have to bring them more incrmentally into the Adobe Digital Publishing system. I do not think I will be able to start by recommending enterprise, but I could go with Professional or other solutions fairy quickly. If Professional won't work this way, can a company such as this at least use Professional to start with just one publication? Even though the company is major, I would not anticipate more than 10,000 total downloads for awhile

You can use both professional as well as enterprise edition DPS to publish single app or multiple apps in different segements.
