Using programs off old SSD on new MPro HD

I am in graphics and have the new vader pro. I am installing fresh adobe programs, but I am wondering if when I move over my old startup drive from the old Mac Pro (it's an SSD), if I can just run mail, stickies, address book and itunes off of the old ssd.
First will it allow it (I dont' see why not). Next, will all my data and prefs still be there. I hate the hassle of setting up these as new, on the new HD, when half the time I am unable to get the old data or prefs from before. The SSD will be connected though a thurderbolt doc, so it should still be pretty speedy. Itunes is actually on the ssd but all the music is on another regular HD, but will also be in the new thunderbolt doc.
If it does work, I know the itunes on the Pro will keep looking for updates (even though I will never launch the program from that drive). But can I update the other itunes program on the SSD?
Also, shoud I just delete those programs from the Pro HD, or just not ever launch them?
I know that the migration and other methods of getting all my data and prefs on the new computer is supposed to work, but it rarely has for me.

Keep all the applications where they belong - on the system boot drive.
Use Carbon Copy Cloner for that along with Migration or Setup Assistant. It may not have worked for you, or it could have been issues with Lion and MA for instance.
Locate your home folder on a traditional hdd.  No change even though it is on TB or USB3 interface.
250GB Samsung 840 EVO $160 or 500GB for $330 - because of adobe plugins and such your boot drive will be used a lot for scratch/cache even if you have another scratch volume - t he old SSD would be better use for scratch.

Now I see what  you were trying to say but didn't read or edit: you ordered a new Late 2013 Mac Pro 6,1 with just the .... stock small 256GB SSD? (those are fast and I would get what you can afford, upgrades will be possible later seems 200% certain).

  • Old Macbook Died, trying to put old SSD into new Macbook, not working.

I had an old 07 model 17in Macbook pro with a 250g SSD in it. The old macbook finally died so I bought a used 2011 model 17in Macbook Pro that comes with a 500g spinning hard drive.
I would like to move the SSD from my old Macbook(complete dead) into my new Macbook, but apparently it's not as simple as remove and install. The new Macbook will not boot from my old SSD drive once I put it in. The old SSD was running Mavericks and with data on it which I would like to keep. Any suggestions?

Hello babyharpseal and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
"move the SSD from my old Macbook(complete dead)"
So you're sure that SSD is working properly? What happened to your '07? and did you keep your Mavericks Installer?
    If so:
Update your 2011 to the latest version of Mavericks and place your SSD in an external and do this:
Move your data to a new Mac - Apple Support
Then insure that your internal is bootable and reinstall Mavericks on your SSD.
    http://macs.about.com/od/Mavericks/ss/How-To-Perform-A-Clean-Install-Of-Os-X-Mav ericks-On-A-Macs-Startup-Drive.htm
This will be a clean install and all data will be erased.
"The OS X Mavericks Installer, available from the (Apple Store)"
    No longer true.
Apple will want you to update to Yosemite but I'm currently not recommending that.

  • Transferring program from old computer to new compute

I got a new mac book pro.  My old mac book pro seemed to have some issues with it, so I don't want to transfer all the information from the old to the new.  I just want to bring over the important items.  How do I transfer over programs (ie Quicken, 1Password)?

    Hello marconme,
Congratulations on your new MacBook Pro! It sounds like you would only like to transfer specific items to your new MacBook Pro.  With Migration Assistant, you have this option.
When going through the Migration Assistant setup, you will get to the screen where you can choose to only transfer Applications:
You can customize your selection by clicking to expand the disclosure triangles.
It is important to note that when you transfer the application, it will not transfer the application data if you just select the applications to be transferred.  The data for these applications are usually stored in the user account, and you can choose to transfer that information or not:

  • How do I get my email in Apple's Mail program from old drive to new drive?

I can not determine from Apple's support info how to export my email in Apple's Mail program from the old drive to the new drive.
The old 60 GB drive was at 55GB and had 3 volume structure problems. It would not backup all files using SuperDuper!, but I could backup the user files onto an external 250GB Tintanium Fantom Drive. So I installed a new 120 GB in the iMac and took the old 60GB drive and put it in an external firewire drive housing, which mounts, runs and will even act as the startup drive. I installed 10.3.9 on the new 120GB drive. I was able to export the address book over to the new drive with no problems, but I don't know how to export the email.
There does not appear to be an export function in Apple's Mail program (This sounds kind of ???).
I have a lot of email (#???) in a lot folders and subfolders (60) in addition to the inboxes, plus all the sent mail (2,000)

The Mail.app preference file (which stores all account information and general Mail.app preferences) is located at Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist.
All Mail.app mailboxes and other data is stored in the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail.
With the Mail.app quit on the new hard drive, place a copy of the Mail folder from the old hard drive at Home > Library on the new drive. If there is an existing Mail folder at Home > Library, this will replace it.
Place a copy of the com.apple.mail.plist file from the old hard drive at Home > Library > Preferences on the new hard drive. If there is an existing com.apple.mail.plist file at Home > Library > Preferences on the new hard drive (and there should be one if you have launched the Mail.app on the new hard drive), this will replace it.
Launch Mail on the new hard drive and the Mail.app should be completely restored or identical to the Mail.app on the old hard drive.

  • Problems with Cloning Old SSD to new SSD on i7 MBP

Alright, I'll try to be as brief as possible.
I recently transferred or am in the process of transferring my old info from a Mac Pro Tower to a new 2.8 i7 MBP. Previously, I had a 40GB SSD drive with my OS and Apps and it ran perfectly fine, however I needed more space. I ended up buying a Crucial M4 128GB SSD and upgraded the RAM to 16GB and have since had problems with the Crucial. I just now updated the firmware but that didn't seem to fix a thing.
So what I've done is initialized the M4 SSD w/ Disk Utility via Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and I've done a clone using Time Machine (it worked but it was really slow and would occasionally lag for 30 seconds out of nowhere with a beach ball) and I've also done a clone using Carbon Copy and that was ridiculously slow (I would get a beach ball every 5-10 seconds and just opening a new window in the finder would cause a beach ball).
I don't know what could be the problem. I've since made a bootable SD card with both Leopard and Lion, thinking I'd just install a brand new OS onto the new SSD, but those aren't working for some reason.
So yes, I'm currently using the previous and well-working 40GB SSD, but I'm lost and would appreciate anyone's help!
    Thanks in advance!

On NEW Macbook Pro's to boot from the Online Recovery HD system you hold down Command+Option+r.
I believe that it is cmd-r, no option key.
On new MBPs, late 2011 models (At least on mine) to access the Online recovery system you have to hold down Command+Option+r. Of course this was with Lion installed and a real Lion Recovery HD partition on the hard drive.
I can't find documentation anywhere for that, and my 2011 iMac goes to recovery using cmd-r and ignores cmd-opt-r, may I ask you to post the documentation?
Right there is none. As stated on my Late 2011 MBP 15" with hard drive installed with Lion and recovery HD partition in place to boot from the Online recovery system I must hold down Command+Option+r.
Now if I had no recovery HD partition maybe Command+r would work. I don't remember if I tried that, although I think I have and as far as I can recall it is the same.
This has been covered before with others doing tests and IIRC all others with NEW MBPs need to hold down those 3 key to access the online system. Note that this is on NEW, late 2011, MBPs. Not sure about early 2011 models or late 2010 models with the updated firmware.
In any event holding down those 3 keys if the other command, Command+r, doesn't work won't cause any harm to the computer. It's not like the computer will self destruct if you hold down those keys.
On the same Mac to boot the Online Apple Hardware Test, which is normally holding down the d key, I have to hold Option+d. There's no documentation on that either.

  • I did not sync music properly to computer from iphone3.  have new iphone4.  how can i get music off old phone onto new one.  new phone all set up.  help

I did not sync my iphone3 music to my computer.  Thought I did it properly but did not.  New at this stuff.  Now my IT person installed and configured my new iphone4 and my music is on old phone.  Anyway to get it to new phone.  Help.:)

Set up your new phone as if it were the old one. Settings, mail, mobile me, same email same password that you used on old phone. You can still sync the old phone to iTunes library. You may have to click on picture of phone on the left & click on back up iPhone.  You'll see songs, contacts & calendar downloading in apple slot at the top. When done connect new phone. Authorize computer put in apple ID when that screen comes up & that should allow both phones to share the library. If you use the same ID the same information will be on both phones.

  • How to transfer all files and programs from old HDD to new HDD?

I would like to change my laptop's HDD to one with a larger capacity. Is there a way for me to transfer all my current content to the new HDD from the old one without having to re-install all programs/ the OS?

Check this MS page about Windows Backup and Restore Center

    There you can find this:

  • Mid2009 SSD in new mac

    Hello
my mid-2009 Macbook Air 13'' froze while upgrading to OS X Lion. After 5 Minutes therefore pressed the reset button. However, when I tried to restart it nothing happend. I can hear the ventilation but it doesn't even attempt to boot.
I therefore contacted a certified reseller. They tried to get a 'new' 2009-board, however, it seems not to be availabe anymore. Instead they offered me a new MacBook Air. The problem: it won't be able to use/read my old SSD, i.e. all my data gets lost. That's not an option for me: I need my data.
Any idea on how to recover the data from my old SSD?
    Many thanks for your Help!
    Thorsten

Two ideas: 1) Contact OWC. They sell an external enclosures for some Apple SSDs and I believe yours is supported. 2) An authorized repair site should be able to access the data and transfer it to your computer.

In the kit i have the USB enclousre with a CD for transferring my data from the old SSD to the newer. The problem is i got no idea how to do it. I tried youtubeing it but most of them were on a Windows PC. Can somebody Please tell me how to transfer my data using the USB enclousre.
    Thank you for your time.

Put the new drive in the external enclosure. Connect it to the computer. Partition and format the drive:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-R keys until the Main Utilities menu appears on the screen..
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external SSD drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
         1. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         2. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         3. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         4. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         5. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external SSD drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

I am using my iMac using iChat to talk to a newer iMac that doesn't have iChat. We had this working using Messages and Facetime (on the new machine) talking to my existing iChat account. One day last week, when Facetime rang, my kids answered on the iPad. Dang! Now it's all fouled up! The new iMac won't see my AIM account name and shows that I'm offline, because the iPad is off. We were able to call using "most recent call" in Facetime, but now I can't go and control that new iMac remotely to help with some email concerns the user is having. I'm trying to not personalize this too much, but it's grandkids talking to Grandma and Mom and Dad trying to solve new machine hiccups. Normally, I could just go in via iChat and control the other machine and troubleshoot, but I can't do it with Facetime only. My buddy list doesn't see  the other computer even though we are connected on Facetime right now. My name is not highlighted for the other computer. What could have gone so wrong?

  • Using Home Sharing to transfer itunes library from old computer to new but connection keeps timing out...anyone have a solution?

    Hello everyone,
I am attempting to use Home Sharing to import my itunes library from my old computer to new (as per instructions on this site), but the connection keeps "timing out" and so the import gets cut short.
Both computers have the new itunes (I updated them last night), but only seem to get about 5 minutes (or 100 songs in) before the connection error occurs.
I have an external hard drive and would use it to transfer my library (which is ~45GB) however my old computer isn't recognizing the hard drive so I thought Home Sharing was a good option...perhaps I was wrong?
    Help Please!
    Thanks

You might need to make sure neither is going to sleep (System Prefs > Energy Saver)
Also check your settings under System Prefs > Security. My sisters new laptop kept logging off due to some setting there.

my iCloud mail is used in my old apple id, how can i move my old iCloud mail to my new apple id

If the old ID is yours, and if it is an earlier version of your current ID, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.
