Using Project files to recapture media?

I have lots of video that I captured using capture now. If anything were to ever happen to the media captured, can the project file somehow be used to recapture the exact segment of video I originally had without having to go through the whole process all over again?
What about if the project file includes edits and I somehow lose the media. If it is recaptured, will the edits in the project file apply to the recaptured video?
Thanks.

Pre roll is adding time to the head and tail of each clip, also called 'handles' so you have some room to change edit points, add transitions, recapture media etc. in the future. Pre roll is a FCP setup item prior to capture.
That's not quite right, Don. Pre-roll and handles are completely un-related. Handles are what you are describing in your post. Pre-roll is a recognition of playback ballistics in that a deck needs to cue to a point prior to the in-point on the tape to be captured. This is because the tape needs time to come up to speed and stabilize before you begin capture.
The amount of pre-roll required varies with the deck. I believe DV decks are often set at 6 seconds. Digibeta is lower, at 3 seconds.
As to why Capture now is generally a bad practice (or at least a sloppy one that can cause trouble) - By logging prior to capture, you can name your clips, and the quicktime media generated will have the same name. This is a LOT better that having a bunch of clips labeled untitled-1, untitled-2, etc littering your hard drive - especially if you run into the need to re-link your media.
Also, historically, there were drawbacks to using capture now - one of which was that FCP tried to allocate your entire hard drive. Revisions 5 and later deal with this more gracefully.
You also keep from filling your hard drive by FCP informing you if what you want to capture will actually fit on your scratch disk.
Finally, that little pre-roll thing mentioned above can thwart your attempts to recapture your media at a later date... (or certainlly complicate them).

  • Help: FCE 2.0.3 project files will not open in FCE 4.0

I have been using FCE 2.0.3 on a PowerBook G4 and PowerPC G5 to annotate a number of movie files with markers. I recently bought a new MacBook Pro with Intel and the new FCE 4.0. The new FCE launches when I double click on a FCE 2.0.3 project file, but then I get the following message:
This project is unreadable or may be too new for this version of Final Cut.
I really NEED to be able to open these older project files with all of the markers and sequences intact. Can anyone help???

    Hello Tom,
Thank you so much for your help. I spent about 2 hours on the phone with a very dedicated
Video Tech support person from Apple, and, unfortunately, we did not manage to solve the
problem. He also had me email a project file to him, which he was able to open. He then saved it as a FCE 4.0 project file and emailed it back to me. However, I was still unable to open it (I got the same message as with the original).
Here's what I think the problem may be: I moved all my FCE 2.0 project files and media
from my PowerBook G4 to my new MacBook Pro using Apple's Migration Assistant BEFORE I
installed FCE 4.0 on my new MacBook Pro (no version of FCE was installed on it
beforehand). So, I think that the problem may have something to do with the fact that the
Final Cut Express Documents folder existed already on my laptop when I installed the
    program.
The reason that I think this is that this morning I installed FCE 4.0 on my Mac Mini (with Intel and running Leopard OS 10.5.1) BEFORE I transferred one of the FCE 2.0 project files and associated media to it. I was ABLE to open the project file -- I received the message "The file format of this project is from an earlier version. Would you like to update this project file?" I went ahead and updated the file, and, then I was able to open it without any problem.
So, my current plan is to delete FCE 4.0 from my MacBook Pro as well as the Final Cut
Express Documents folder that contains all of my FCE 2.0 project files. Then I will
reinstall FCE 4.0 and, after that, I will copy the FCE 2.0 project files to the Final Cut
Express Documents folder that is created.
I will let you know if this is successful.
Thank you (and Peter) for your help!

  • FCP Project Files are all "invalid format?"

I tried uploading many FCP Project Files with no success. All Project Files run fine in Final Cut Pro.
Once the upload process begins, the "Jobs in Progress" status spins for about a minute or so. At this point a red exclamation point appears, then a popup window that states:
"Unable to Analyze Project ... Invalid Format."
The project file makes it's way into FC Server as a listed asset, however when I choose to "get Info" and do a Search for the associated project files, nothing shows up. The manual mentions or recommends to use file extensions, and I have.
I read Final Cut Server is supposed to automatically recognize all FCP Project file's associated media. In fact they don't need to be packaged in a folder, etc.
Lastly I created a brand new FCP Project with a single video clip and a single audio clip after I installed the new ProApps Update. Still no luck.
Is anyone experiencing the same issue?
    Thanks.
    -paul.

    Paul:
I experience the exact same issue, yesterday and thought that after Apple released the following update
    http://www.apple.com/support/releasenotes/en/FinalCut_Studio_2.0rn/
that things may work, but they still dont.
My guess, is that there may be a version update to Final Cut 6.0.3 to maybe Final Cut 6.5 or something that will allow this direct integration with Final Cut Server. However, note, I was able to success import Final Cut Project exported as Final Cut XML files. I tried this because this was traditionally how it work when FCServer was the Artbox product. My guess is because the Final Cut Studio and Final Cut Server engineers in Apple really don't speak direct to each other, FCServer was realeased with this bug.

  • Problem Delivering Project Files to Client

Anytime I back up my project files for this particular DVD it cannot be opened on another computer. I've burned the project file, all media, all menu graphics, and the .txt files for the subtitles on to a DVD. When another computer besides the one the DVD was authored on tries to open the project it gets stuck on "Loading Tracks."
    What could this be?
Every so often I am also unable to open the file, and I think its getting corrupted somehow. Please help.
EDIT: I realize I forgot to delete the PAR and MPEG folders that DVD SP creates and also burned those onto the client's DVD. Would this contribute to them not being able to open it?

Thanks for replying Aldershot. I am running OS 10.4.3, DVD SP 4.0.2 with 2.5 GB RAM on a Dual 2.0 G5. The project has been saved on external firewire (with ~15 GB free) as well as a duplicate on the system drive (~85 GB free). None of them open after I save it and quit. During save I get the beach ball, but eventually it comes back to normal and I can use the app as normal.
I have read that there may be an issue with the ObjectDataB file (found within the project package Contents folder). See the link below for a description of this diagnosis.
    http://www.dmnforums.com/cgi-bin/readwholethread.fcgi?forum=astarte_dvd&post=041 004175700.htm&toppostid=3523
Here's some more info if you think it will help you diagnose. I got a project file and associated media on a data DVD-R to start with. Moved everything to my External drive and made numerous changes to the project file. Saved a copy with a new file name. There are 2 tracks (one 6 mins, the other 30 mins), and they each have 16 subtitle tracks. This is honestly where I think the problem lies, but I don't understand why DVDSP can't handle that many tracks. I notice it takes longer to save as I progressively import the subtitles.
If I may work with you over e-mail it would be great. Check soon.... Thanks again!

  • Project files creating dup assets (but not imported via scan)

I've looked at these two threads: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9147105#9147105
    and
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9096958&#9096958
which sort of address my question.
I do not import media via scan. I am attempting to import project files with associated media. I import a project file and it imports the media assets as well. Here's the problem. When I then go and import another project file with many of the same assets, FCSvr creates duplicate assets, but only if I import the second project file soon after the first. I waited a week and tried it, and no duplicate assets were created. I have setup periodic scans on my Library Device which is an EIP device and which is where I'm sending the files that get imported. The scans are setup to run every 10 mins or so but don't seem to have an effect. So why does this work if I wait more than a day or so and can I manually kick off the scan or whatever process I need to setup so that I avoid getting duplicate assets.
Again, I don't want to originally import the media via scan of an EIP device b/c I want to do set some metadata fields on multiple assets but not all assets in the project.
I'm really just curious what process it is that tells FCSvr that these assets already exist in the db and filesystem and how I can manually kick it off.
    Any enlightenment would be great.
    Thanks.
    H.

You probably have a full scan running overnight, which is what is catching all the media. The add only scan you have running every 10 minutes only get new media that is written to the EIP device.
If that doesn't seem to address your question, then try rephrasing it. It's difficult to understand from your explanation what you have running where, and what you're uploading where.

  • Project files, GUI, NetBeans

I have always used java from the command prompt and without project files.
I use JCreator 3.5 and have all of my java source files in one directory.
When I say ?compile file?, it just retrieves all of the files it needs, very simply.
Now I think I want to use the Swing GUI and maybe the Net Beans IDE.
The tutorial uses project files in the examples,
but I have always considered them as excess baggage.
Do I need project files and what advantages do they contribute?

Do I need project files and what advantages do they contribute? That depends on what you're referring to here.
If when you say "have all my java source files in one directory" you mean you don't use any packages, it's certainly possible but I'd really recommend against it. Netbeans, especially, tries to structure a project in a way that conforms to best practices for Java development.
Looking at my own Netbeans projects, I see these extra files. I'll try to give reasons if I can. Other IDEs have other files that do much of the same thing by different names:
    FILES
build.xml: An ANT build file for your project, automatically generated, which lets Netbeans build the project in a standard way.
manifest.mf: This will go in your packaged JAR and gives the JVM some special options if needed.
    FOLDERS
nbproject: Contains the settings for this project and is used to generate the build.xml and manifest.mf files.
    src: Your source files.
Optional src/META-INF: Other files that will go into the built JAR file.
test: Testing code you want for your own development process but not to distribute.
lib: Libraries to be shipped with the JAR.
build: Temporary storage for class files built during development.
dist: Netbeans continuously builds a releasable version of your code here.
Basically, the way Netbeans handles it, you save the entire folder for yourself or to share with your team, but when you want to package it up, you just take the dist folder and give that to people.

  • Trouble finding old templates/project files

I created several relatively intricate DVD menus several months ago and then had to transfer all the project files and associated media to a different computer. Now I can't seem to open any of the menus I created.
It seems like it should be simple but what is the extension of the primary project file in DVD SP? Are they *.layout files? When I try to open these, DVD Studio pro just sits idly and does nothing.
Any help would be hugely appreciated.
    thanks

I was able to work this one out myself.

  • Need To change the location in which my projects refer to the media files

I recently capped out my 750 gb hard drive. I didn't think i had that much stuff only to realize that throughout all of my projects i have been using the "Make copies of media" when importing option. now i literally have a copy of every video file on my mac and its taking up so much room. is there anyway to change this option so it refers to the original files instead or is my only real option to redo all my projects?

I dont really follow you in your first two lines but i am using version 10.0.5
Should I update to the latest version. thanks fore the response!
It seems as if you have two copies of the media on your Mac??
You only need one copy of the real media.
It's easy enough to move from one folder to another and re-connect.
If your drive is the system drive it would be wise to employ a dedicated media drive and place all your real media there.
Updating to FCPX 10.1.1 requires two things:
    1. Mavericks installed on your Mac.
    2. An understanding of how the new Mediai Management system works.
In your case there is a lot to do before updating.
I'd suggest sorting your current issue first.

  • Is there a way to compress media and project files into something small

I have a 2TB hard disk where all my FCP files - project files, media files and rendered files are stored.
I am not sure I will reopen those projects but still to be onthe safer side I do not want to delete them
but keep the compresed so that in case I need to open them some later time, I can open the project and do the edits.
So is there a way to compress the files and store that I can reuse in a later stage but still take less space now.

You can delete all the render files, since they can recreated when needed.
And you can also delete the optimized or proxy media, if you have any, for the same reason.
I doubt that you'd get much space back by using compression, since video files are already pretty much compressed.

  • Export problem when using a lot of large medias in a premiere project.

    Hi !
My premiere/media encoder have a weird comportment when I use a lot of large media in the same project :
    - has I import more media (avi uncompress out from aftereffect) in my project, my exports are getting slower and slower (lag before the progress bar start moving)
    - the files I export are getting bigger and bigger !
    - when I reach about 20 gigs of total medias size, I'm totally unable to export with media encoder (the software freeze after I launch the queue) and have to open the project in after effect to do the export (with the same weird lag before the progress bar start).
I have to precise that I'm aware that longer montages are heavier once exported.
I'm speaking of exporting 30sec montage, same sound, comparable background, colors, image type and camera moves.
the only difference is that in one of the montage I use 3 footage and in the other 14.
The weight of the export (FLV in most of my tests, but the same thing happen in mp4, f4v...) is sometime 3X the expected weight.
Exporting the video uncompressed and then compressing the it with media encoder (FLV birate 700) give the same result (a 10meg file) and a weird lag before the progress bar start moving.
Exporting the video uncompressed and then compressing the it with sorenson squeeze (FLV bitrate 700) give a good result (a 3meg file).
I have to use 720p uncompress media for my montage as the video would be use for television, not only internet.
I tried to export the file with other computer and have the same result.
    I'm working on a PC, intel core2 quad CPU Q6600 2.40Ghz. 12GB of RAM, winvista 64bit,
graphic card : Nvidia quadro FX 570 256mb
    Thank you.

  • Project file size bloat when editing sound media in Audition

Whenever I clean up a voice-over clip in using Audition, the size of the clip in Captivate remains about the same, but the project file size increases by about the amount of the original clip.
For example, the size of the original sound clip is 1098.90. The size of the edited clip is 1103.98. The size of the original project file is 5416, but the size of the saved file with the edited clip is 6496.  I'm using Captivate 7 and the latest version of Audition CC. I've cleared my cache and removed any unused media.
All I am doing to the clip is some noise reduction and EQ tweaking.
It seems like Captivate is saving both versions of the sound clip.
    UPDATE:
I've also tried saving the sound file as a .wav from Audition into a folder and then updating the sound clip in Captivate. Same bloat problem.
I have also copied the slides into a blank project. Again, same file size problem.
    Any ideas?

  • Media Encoder export a different font from the project file

    HI
Media Encoder export a different font from the project file when I use a installed font
The problem doesn't occur when exporting directly from Premiere
    Any ides why?
    Thanks

Hi! This also happened to me quite a few times with different fonts. Your fix worked, thank you. I don't think it's the font since, like I said, it happened with a few fonts, but just in case I was using Mf Young & Beautiful in TTF format.
Are there any side effects to turning off "import sequences natively"?

  • Has anyone used Paragon NTFS or Tuxera for Median and Project Files

I have read lots of discussions about why this is not a good idea but my two options are to do this or switch to Sony Vargas for everything so it would be good if people could let me know if they have had this working successfully.
So has anyone successfully used either of these 2 NTFS drivers to edit SD/HDV or Prores projects on? My only experience has been using SD footage on an NTFS drive with the free NTFS-3G drivers. This worked fine as long as project files were on non NTFS drive (for same reason if I saved project on NTFS is saves a file with a size of zero bytes).
    Regards,
    Ben
PS I wonder if this thread will stay on topic;).

Macs can read drives that are formatted in NTFS as is. The software you mentioned enables a Mac to write to those drives. That said, you should edit using drives that are optimized for FCP and formatted Mac OS Extended.
Nothing to stop you copying the media from an NTFS drive to work with and then copying the finished result back.
As you are now in the position of having to do this, why not do a test and report back with your results?

  • Project file, and autosaves, hang when opening, even if media offline

    Scary problem.
Earlier today I had an issue with Compressor, it repeated unexpectedly quit when trying to launch. So, I reinstalled it and ended up reinstalling from my FCS1 disc. I then realised I had reverted all my studio apps to their studio 1.0 versions, so then ran install from my FCS2 disc. This brought all apps back up to date and I succesfully ran software update.
All apps now launch without problems, except for one project file which hangs at 37% during the 'reading project' stage of opening it.
I'm pretty sure its not down to project file corruption as the same thing happens when I try and open any of the autosaves.
I've also taken all my media drives offline and tried but the same thing happens, but instead of hanging at 37% it hangs at 30%.
Final cut pro is semi-responsive when it hangs, menus open etc, but quit doesn't work and clicking cancel in the 'reading project' window doesn't work. Only way out is to force quit at this point.
I have also tried removing the /Users/<myaccount>/Library/Preferences/Final Cut Pro User Data folder but that makes no difference.
Are there any files that could be lurking from doing the round trip back to an older version? Not sure why this would only be effecting one project file though. Other recent projects open fine.
Ever-so slightly desperate now! Hopefully someone can help. Many thanks.

Do you know whether it was built in CS5?
The Premiere project it is linked to must be CS5. (I think this is what I found when using CS3, CS4, and CS5 projects with Encore CS5.)
Try opening the PR project in Premiere, then while open, open the Encore project.

  • Need to determine which project files uses a video file

Short of going through each of my FCP project files one by one, is there any way to find out which of my project files uses a particular video file?
    Thanks,
    John Link

As long as it has a name you can search for it.
The problem is not to find a media file, it is to find all the project files that use a media file. Thanks, cometmace, for providing a solution to that problem, and welcome to the Apple Discussions.
