Using Promise Pegasus R4 with MacBook Pro

My new Pegasus R4 is setup in my home office to backup my files and hold my Aperature photo library masters.
How do I disconnect the MacBook Pro from the Pegasus - I assume I just eject the Pegasus drive, but then do I leave the drive on, or can I/should I power it off?  Any other precautions, it seems these particular Raid drives are tempermental.

Power it off.

  • How do I use the App store with macbook pro and mac pro

I currently use the app store with the mac book, but want to buy (share?) apps and music with the mac pro.
I can't find anything that specifically outlines how this works.
I use SplashID with the macbook and an iPhone, and want to use it (and sync it) on the mac pro as well.
If you buy apps for a macbook, can you use them on a second machine, or do you need to buy it a second time?

Your license from the MAS allows you to download and install the apps on as many Macs as you own or have under your control (institutional or employer supplied Macs.) The Mac should to be running Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard or Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion. Open the MAS app on the Mac Pro and sign into your account to have access to download all of your previous purchases in the Purchased pane.
Simple apps can also be dragged & dropped over a network connection from the MacBook to the Mac Pro.

  • Can Use 'any' DVI monitor with Macbook Pro?

I just want a simple 20" or 22" monitor as a 2nd screen for my Macbook Pro 2008 Unibody
Can I use any monitor as long as it says "DVI"? and then get the mini-display > DVI adaptor to run it from the macbook?
For example any from this list here would be ok : http://computers.shop.ebay.co.uk/Desktop-PCs-Monitors-/171957/i.html?trkparms=65%253A2%257C66%253A1%257C39%253A1&rt=nc&_nkw=dvi%20monitor&_catref=1&_ dmpt=UK_Computing_ComputerComponents_Monitors&_sc=1&_sop=2&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14. l1581&pgn=2
Would these work ok? as i dont need the huge 27" Apple display as its out of my price range..

    pitchfork wrote:
Would a VGA monitor work with the mini display > VGA adaptor? or is this not as good quality?
It might, but VGA is an older analog standard and DVI is digital, so DVI should produce a better picture.
Sorry for all the questions! Also is DVI-D still compatible (whatever that means?)
According to Wikipedia, DVI-A is DVI to analog and DVI-D is full digital. So DVI-D is what you would be using anyway, if you were connecting to a DVI port on a monitor.

  • Using Hybrid Hard Drives with Macbook Pro ???

    Hello,
I am looking for any news or answers, if it is possible to use one of the very new Hybrid Hard Drives from Seagate ("Momentum 5400 PSD") or Samsung ("Spinpoint MH") with Macbook/Macbook Pro ???
What i have read so far, seems only ugly Windows Vista mentioned everywhere, but no word about Macbook and/or Mac OS X :-(((
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul

I read on the Seagate site that the drive would work but that you wouldn't get all of the hybrid functionality you're paying for. (lost the link.... sorry).
The one I've read about is the Momentus 7200.2 Laptop Hard Drive. Here is a tech article about that:
    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2119528,00.asp
I think I'm going to go for this one, though I am a little concerned that it won't be as quite as the Apple installed drive.

  • Problem while using Internet USB Connection with Macbook Pro

    Hi...
My name is udayan and i am from India, I am using MACBOOK PRO from last 1 year. For most of this period i have used wi-fi connection for my laptop. But recently i have purchased a Relience Net connect Device for Internet facility. As soon as i started using this device, i have started facing an unusual problem. Whenever i start using it, after 5-10 mins. a fade screen appears and asks me to RESTART the laptop. This keeps on happening after every 10-15 mins which is pretty annoying. I have tried to use the same Internet device on normal laptops and it works just fine with that machine.
Can you please help me to understand this phenomena? Is it a MAC limitation or something else?
Hope to hear it from you soon.....
    Cheers!!!

I tried to connect with Ethernet the MACBOOK Pro to the modem but the situation hasn't changed
Are you saying you cannot connect to the internet wirelessly and through the ethernet?  If so, there is something else going on.

  • Using an external HD with MacBook Pro

I just bought an xHD because I use a lot of memory. I have some questions that I hope you can help me answer:
    - The HD comes with an ON and OFF switch. Is it an absolute must to switch on and off as I turn the Mac on and off?
    - Is it a must to keep the power adaptor connected at all times? Can I just keep the USB connected - is that enough?
    - Is it safe to have the HD on at all times? I want to save all my files from now on directly to the HD.
    - What are the chances that the HD can be corrupted forever and I will lose all my files? These files are very important to me -- they are my life and career -- so is there anything I can do to make sure the HD doesn't become corrupted?
Thanks very much for your help!

It is not absolutely essential to turn off the drive. Most drives have a low power mode. But if you're turning your computer off, why not put the drive on a surge strip with a power switch. That way after you power off your computer, you then just turn off the switch. This is what I do for my external monitor, speakers, etc. Those power bricks still use some power so by switching off the surge strip, I completely turn off the power bricks as well.
Some surge strips have a "autosense" outlet that you plug your computer into. And when the strip senses that the computer is off, it turns off the other outlets. You may want to try one of those.
But if you leave the adapters and hard drive plugged in, thats fine.
    - What are the chances that the HD can be corrupted forever and I will lose all my files? These files are very important to me -- they are my life and career -- so is there anything I can do to make sure the HD doesn't become corrupted?
All hard drives will eventually fail. ALL hard drives. There are things you can do to reduce the chances of data corruption, but you can never guarantee it will never be corrupted. But beyond that, you may accidentally delete or overwrite a file. No software or hardware failure there, that's "human failure."
Having only one copy of the data, you are very likely going to be upset at some point in the future. As the saying goes, there are two kinds of people: those that have lost data, and those that will lose data. So to protect any "important" documents, you need backups. Which means that if you're going to only store your documents on the external drive, you need another drive and make a duplicate.
If your internal hard drive is large enough for all your documents, then the simplest thing for you may be to use the external hard drive for Time Machine backups. So then when your internal drive dies, you can restore with the Time Machine backup. If you still want to have the documents on the external drive, then get a second external drive for Time Machine.

  • How does one continue to use Mail on the early MacBook Pro, Model 1,1, that is not upgradable to Lion?  I have been running iCloud on my iPhone (OS5) and iMac (Lion) along with the MacBook Pro (OS Version 10.6.8)

How does one continue to use Mail on the early MacBook Pro, Model 1,1, that is not upgradable to Lion?  I have been running iCloud on my iPhone (OS5) and iMac (Lion) along with the MacBook Pro (OS Version 10.6.8) since November until now.  Mail will no longer download on the MacBook Pro and keeps asking for my password.

Mail should still be usable with your machine - but you'll need to update the settings to conform to the requirements of your system. Check with your ISP (like ATT, etc.) for the settings that will work with your Mail. Once you've updated this, you should be able to email like before.
For example, my ISP required that I go to Mail Preferences/Accounts and make sure the details conform to your email settings.
I have no idea of what your ISP is or what the settings might be, but this is likely the source of the problem.

  • Scrolling through PDF files is slow using Adobe Reader on MY MACBOOK pro with retina

Scrolling through PDF file using Adobe reader on my MACBOOK pro is very slow and stuters. That is even for small files. MAC preview and Adobe pro do not have this issue. It is only Adobe ready.
    Please advice.

Summarizing the problem specifics and versions for future readers:
There are two separate "slow scrolling" bugs in recent versions of Adobe Reader on Mac OS X. Symptoms: scrolling by mouse or fn + down arrow is very sluggish and laggy. It is not isolated to large or graphically complex documents. This 2 megabyte PDF shows illustrates the problem: http://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/nasa-tnd-6846pt.1.pdf
Problem 1: Adobe plug-in for Safari causes slow scrolling when viewing PDF documents within Safari. Solution: remove Adobe plugins from Mac HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin. I also deleted AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin. This will cause PDF display within Safari to revert to the built-in Apple PDF renderer, which is very fast. These files will be re-installed anytime you install or upgrade Adobe Reader.
Problem 2: Stand-alone Adobe Reader scrolling is slow starting with version 11.0.01. Version 10.1.4 and earlier are not slow. User CF McBlob did not experience this slowdown, but was also running Acrobat 10.1.7, which might have libraries which prevented the problem. I'll do further testing when possible to try and isolate more details.
    Platform specifics: OS X 10.8.4, late 2012 iMac 27", i7 3.4Ghz, 16GB RAM, 3TB Fusion drive, GPU = GTX675MX, 1GB

    Hello chrispyw,
If your content is still being displayed incorrectly, I would check the resolution setting for the built in display with this article:
OS X Yosemite: Adjust your display’s resolution
If it keeps happening whenever you use AirPlay then I would use this section of the following article to reset the display system:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,

  • Using Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard with MacBook Pro, Air, Retina (with pictures)

Using Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard with MacBook Pro, Air, Retina (with pictures)
The purpose of this discussion thread is to:
    (1) Get community thoughts around using alternative and complimentary mousing approaches with MacBooks
    (2) To share a current and searchable set of resources for those interested in leveraging a best-of-both-worlds approach for using a non-Apple Trackpoint Keyboard with an Apple MacBook.
    (3) To level-set the fact that a Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard works with MacBooks automatically and instantly out-of-the-box.
Note: I created this discussion because I found that all the other discussion threads related to using a Thinkpad Trackpoint Keyboard with MacBooks were archived and therefore I could not post my thoughts there.
I have been using MacBooks for 3+ years now.  Airs, Pros, Retinas etc.  I LOVE the built-in MacBook Apple Trackpad.  It is wonderful.  Apple has no equal as far as Trackpads go.
In addition, I have been using the Thinkpad Trackpoint USB Keyboard with my MacBooks for ~2 years, and below is why I have found BOTH the Apple Trackpad and Thinkpad Trackpoint to be great.
The Trackpoint and Trackpad both have their sweet spots.  Personally I use the built-in Apple Trackpad on my MacBooks when I'm using my MacBook for less than 1 hour, loosely speaking.  If I am going to be heads-down for more than 1 hr writing, reading, surfing, graphic designing, programming, workshop facilitating, teaching, mindmapping, presenting, demoing, etc. then I pull out my "Lenovo Thinkpad USB Keyboard with Trackpoint (55Y9003) > https://www.google.com/search?&q=lenovo+thinkpad+trackpoint+usb+keyboard
I know many will laugh at me for using a Thinkpad Trackpoint Keyboard with a MacBook...  Keeping an open mind, let's just agree that there is historical precedence for alternative mousing devices.  If I could only choose one, I would use the Apple MacBook built-in Trackpad exclusively, however with alternatives come potential benefits.  Keep in mind that Apple, Microsoft, Logitech and many other companies make millions of dollars each year providing alternative peripheral devices for computers, and mousing is no exception.  Regardless, I just want to share my positive experiences using both. :-)
Why should you care?  For *some* people the following is true and meaningful.  The Trackpoint (the little red eraser head stick thingy) in the midle of the keyboard enables useful and unique dynamics/use-cases, including:
You don't have to take your hand(s) off the keyboard to mouse
You can independantly click without accidentally moving the mouse (Yes I know some people don't have issues with this)
You don't run out of finger-gesture runway when you're moving your mouse across the screen (I know this is a gray area for some people)
For mouse-movement-heavy applications (e.g. Graphics, drawing, etc.) the Trackpoint *is at times* more exacting
Below I share some pictures (which I know *look* ridiculous to some people, but none-the-less help demystify what this looks like.  And, while ridiculous looking, it is actually quite thin and elegant once you get over the initial shock of seeing these two diverse technologies combined in this way.
Rest assured, the keyboard shown below (google "55Y9003") is VERY light, thin and fits in almost any laptop case/backpack easily so it is not a big deal to carry it, if you work on-the-go.  In addition:
It is UNCANNY how well it fits on top of the keyboard space of all MacBooks.
It fits perfectly around the corners of the MacBook Pro/Air/Retina keyboard
Note: I took one of the 5 rubber feet/pads off the bottom of my keyboard, the one in the middle
Lastly, you can actually use the built-in Apple Trackpad at the SAME TIME as the Trackpoint Keyboard.
It is quite a nice best-of-both-worlds approach for people that like the benefits of the "Why should you care?" use cases above.
Please reply and comment with your thoughts and please let's keep it positive, constructive and friendly :-)
    Pictures Below:
My two Retina MBPs, one with and one without the keyboard, so you can easily see the difference.  (As if you wouldn't)
A slightly closer-up shot of just the RMBP with the Trackpoint Keyboard on top
Please reply and comment with your thoughts and please let's keep it positive, constructive and friendly :-)

Newer Bluetooth version of the ThinkPad External Trackpoint Keyboard available...
The new version is smaller, so you can use your MacBook Trackpad at the same time as your Trackpoint keyboard.
    Here is the Lenovo model/Part Number# 0B47190
Here is a picture of what it looks like:
Note: Just like the older larger USB model keyboard, there is a rubbery footpad in the middle of the bottom of the keyboard that I just peeled off.  Otherwise, it makes the "H" key press accidentally under-neath the keyboard.  Once I took that off, it fit perfectly over and around the built-in MacBook keyboard, so I can optionally put it on top of my MacBook for easy typing. :-)
