Using PSD files . . . HELP

I have a psd file with a transparent background. I have built it video template and pixel correction in photoshop. I need to know how to use it. I place it in the timeline. If i select it I then get a additional tab in the timeling for just that image. . I have figured out that I need to make duration changes in the tab. However, when I place it in the time line again (I need to use it several time) I can't change the duration of the second without changing the first usage, them both instances do not show in the viewer.
I have Tom Wolsky's FCE 2 book but can't find where it explains how to control a psd file. If some one could help me out it would be great. Even just directing me to the correct section of the book would help greatly.
Thanks

If you need to manipulate the individual layers of the image in FCP, PSD will work fine. But if you don't, then use a TIFF file. Much more convenient to work with. Plus a TIFF file format will maintain it's layer editability in Photoshop and still show any applied layer effects in FCP without having to rasterize the layers.
For PSD, import the file, then double-click it in the Browser to load it into the Viewer. Set the duration (upper left hand TC window) prior to adding it to the Timeline.
Once it's in the Timeline, if you double-click it, it will open in it's own Sequence. To open it in the Viewer instead, right-click on the image and select "Open in Viewer."

  • Photoshop CS6 .psd files help

    Hi, I am new on here so please excuse if this is posted in the wrong area, I have no idea where to post this.
    I Have Photoshop CS6 Extended (on Windows 7 - 64bit).
    But it does not open my .psd files, only if I run Photoshop CS6 and go File > Open > "and then open the file", it will open, but If I go to the file it self it does not recognize CS6 as the default program or to open it. It tells me it cannot find a program to open the .psd file with. I have tried several times to set the Default Program but it is not even there and if I click on "browse" to find Photoshop and click "open" it does not open or show Photoshop in the Default Programs.
    Now I accidently clicked on coreldraw and I don't want my .psd files opening with coreldraw! because I hardly use coreldraw, I only needed it for my studies...
    When I had CS5 it worked and opened fine, with CS6 the .psd files just don't find Photoshop.
    Can anyone help me please, how can I fix this so that my .psd files get recognized?
    Please it is quite frustrating.
    Thanks.

    You can either uninstall and run Adobe script cleaner and then reinstall CS6 or do a registry change.
    See this link, and for registry change see post # 9.  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1004672?tstart=0

  • Repair PSD file, help! :'(

    I was working at an image, had worked a few hours, saved many times, then I pressed CTRL+S to save again, and then my computer freezes. I rebooted the computer, and then I couldn't open the psd-file again... PLEASE HELP!!! Can I repair the file? I use CS5.
    I'm dying if the file is lost...

    I'm dying if the file is lost...
    It probably is... The best you can hope for is being able to open it in alternate image editors or image viewing programs like XnView and ACDSee they may be able to at least recover the "flat" file and allow you to save that. Partial recovery of layers may also be possible, but not all of them. Also those tools are limited to RGB and 8bit/16bit modes, so the more fancy and specific your PSD was, the less chance they will be able to recover anything. And lesson learned: Always save incremental in the future. There's no harm in having multipole files. you can always delete them later.

  • Using psd file on a PC that was created on a MAC computer

    Hi,
    I am new to this. Any help I can get is greatly appreciated. I am working on a PC using Photoshop CS2. I am working with a graphic artist that uses a MAC (Photoshop CS2). When I try to import her files into my Photoshop I get a message that says the layers can not be read and I must make a composite to see the file.
    I need to see the layers so I can create menus for a DVD I am making( I am using Encore) Am I getting this message because I am going from a MAC to a PC? How can I get around this?
    Thank You.

    Please, Mac, not MAC.
    There should be no problem reading Photoshop files cross platform. I've done it many times over the years, so I am guessing the problem lies with how you are getting the files. Are they being e-mailed or on a disk or some other method? Are you sure they are .psd files and were saved with the correct extension?
    It shouldn't be an issue but make sure she saves them with Compatibility turned on.

  • How to use PSD files as a flash page

    I have read that I can use a psd file in Flash as a "page".
    At what version does this become possible. Can I take a multi-layer
    PSD file that was exported from a Flash program and make changes to
    it in Illustrator and then import it back in as a page? Where can I
    find information on what product versions I need for both me
    (developer) and my designer to use to facilitate this and how to do
    it, any limitations, etc.

    Here is a sample code to set a jpg image in a frame:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class ImageFrame extends Frame{
    private ImageCanvas c;
    private Image i;
    ImageFrame()
         Toolkit tk = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit();
         // This assumes you have an image named
         // "somePic.jpg" in the current directory.
         i = tk.getImage( "somePic.jpg" );
         c = new ImageCanvas( i );
         add( c );
         public static void main( String[] args ) {
         ImageFrame f = new ImageFrame();
         f.addWindowListener( new WindowAdapter()
    public void windowClosing( WindowEvent e ) {
         System.exit( 0 );
         f.setSize( 400, 400 );
         f.show();
    private class ImageCanvas extends Canvas {
         Image i;
         public ImageCanvas( Image i ) {
         this.i = i;
    public void paint( Graphics g ) {
         g.drawImage( i, 0, 0, 400, 400, this );
    I hope I can have my dukes now :-)

  • Is it possible to use psd files as the title files in Premiere(convert or other)?

    I designed all of my credits in Photoshop, not thinking of course! I have roughly 50 credits and want to use the roll features inside of the titler in Premiere.

    And, if you want to add different Styles, just create say the actor's names on one Text Layer, and the role on another Text Layer. You can easily Align Layers to each other, so there is no problem there.
    You can also do several things at the character Level, but Layer Styles are not one of those. It will not be available, if on has Selected a character, or characters in a line of Text.
    Good luck,

  • What Is the best way to upload and download psd files from Photoshop to Photoshop Touch? [was:Re]

    What Is the best way to up load and down load psd files from desktop photo shop to photo shop touch? For on the go touch up or. I'm using psd files at 90 percent 300 depi when in photo shop on desktop. To ps touch

    Hi Bford225,
    I'd recommend using your favorite web browser and going to https://creative.adobe.com/files for uploading from the computer.
    Keep in mind tablet capabilities are much less than a computer, so large files might take a long time to download and be very system intensive to work on. Although you can import files up to 12 megapixels I'd recommend something more mid range, like 6 or 7 megapixels, ie 2880 x 2160 or 3072 x 2304.
    Also, PSD files are flattened when imported into Photoshop Touch.
    Hope that helps,

  • Is there anything in the world wrong with "placing" a PSD file in CS5?

    Friends,
    EMERGENCY !
    I need to know if there's anything wrong with "placing" ( + D) a PSD photograph in CS5??
    I was using PNG, but Photoshop won't save as CMYK .png files.
    I was using .tif files, but TIF files don't preserve transparency.
    Therefore, can I just use .PSD files?  They seem to work just fine ...
    Help!  Thanks!

    Since we're talking about InDesign CS5, there is a wrinkle.
    Dov Isaacs wrote:
    (1)     TIFF files certainly do preserve transparency. Make sure you select that option when saving TIFF.
    And unfortunate pragmatic isue is that Photoshop CS6 changed the way it stores transparency in TIFF files, and it stopped saving obsolete legacy data. And InDesign CS5 (but not CS6) depended on that legacy data. So if you're using PS CS6 and ID CS5 (the subject here indicates ID CS5) and you care about transparency, it's not a good idea to use TIFF.
    (Personally I would tend to want to use TIFF, if this were not the case.)
    I think this "bug" got fixed in ID CS5.5 (#3073238), but I don't think it is fixed in CS6 CS5.
    Edit: not fixed in CS5! Not "not fixed in CS6"

  • PSD files degrade when rendered

    Hi,
    I was wondering if anyone may be able to help me. I'm using Final Cut Express HD and when i render any PSD file that i've imported the file degrades leaving the image looking awful. Is there anything i can do? I don't mind bringing in the images in a different formate, the reason i am using PSD files is it is the only way i can seem to bring them in without a background?
    Thank you
    LBTV

    A few thoughts:
    - you don't need .pdf files to import images without background (i.e. with transparent areas); you can also use TIFF and PNG formats
    - the quality degradation usually depends on the sequence settings: DV PAL has much lower resolution than most images shot with the many megapixel cameras
    - however to see the real final result (if you use DV-PAL format) you'd better check on an interlaced monitor (e.g. a TV): you can connect it using a firewire link and an analog/digital converter

  • Renamed PSD files in AE

    This seems to be a common problem and I haven't been able to find an answer.   Many times, I am using PSD files given to me from our artist.   I'm using the layers of the PSD file in my AE comps.   During the course of the project, the PSD file needs to be renamed.   I then have to manually relink every layer individually to my AE project.   I know when you move a PSD from one location to another, AE will automatically relink the file once the new location is discovered, but is there ANY easier way to relink all the layers of a PSD file if the PSD file has been renamed?

    Not that I know of. That's an inherent limitation - AE simply doesn't check the file unless it's opened nor does the PSD format provide any options for persistent layer identification regardless of the layer structure and names. One of those legacy things... Of course one could create scripts in PS and AE that take care of this by dumping the layer references in one program to a text fiel and then automatically re-assign stuff in the other based on that dump...

  • GIMP psd files in DVD Studio Pro

    Hello all:
    A client is sending me psd files that were created in GIMP rather than Photoshop.
    Will they work? Are there any limitations or incompatibilities I should look for?
    Thanks in advance!

    While you can use psd files in DSP I wouldn't recommend it.
    Layered menus tend to run slower and can make the user think the disc isn't working well.
    If they have designed a layered menu because it reflects the look they want you might to build it and show them how it works. If they are unhappy with the functionality I would suggest a simplified version with a background and overlay. This could be created in GIMP(presuming they can export tiffs or pcts) but it would involve the creator understanding what DSP needs to accomplish this.

  • How to Edit and Replace Psd Files in Adobe Flash - Help!

    Hi Everyone,
    I am new to flash and I am trying to build my first flash site using a flash template. I can use flash to edit certain components like header text, etc. But The content is impossible for me to change. I think that these are psd files, which I can open with gimp or another program and edit. I save and replace that file, but when I view movie again, the content is the same. I guess what I need to know is how to get these files back into my flash movie after I have edited them. Please help, I am no computer expert, but I am learning. A how to for dummies answer would be awesome.

    Maybe You should try the Flash-forum:

  • Help! While editing a photo in CS3 the program shut down and will not reopen my psd file.

    Help! While editing a photo in CS3 the program shut down and will not reopen my psd file. The error message reads "cannot complete your request because of a program error" -- it is a very large file (I have been saving it all along) and I had just "flattened layers" and went to open up a new, blank photo file when it shut down. Is there anyway to get this file to open? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! (p.s. after reading a couple of similar threads, I have a feeling it's hopeless. But I'd also like to know WHY this might have happened!) Thanks in advance!

    Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to respond and for sharing the article--I did panic. Here are the details of my system:
    Model: HP p7-1247c
    Processor: AMD A8-3820 APU with Radeon HD Graphics
    Installed Memory: 8 GB (7.48 usable)
    System Type: 64-bit
    Windows 7 Home Premium
    I am using Photoshop CS3. It seems that I can work on photos and save them. But I am unable to open them back up. I have tried saving the files as psd and tiff with the same result. The error message is:  "cannot complete your request because of a program error"
    The interesting thing is that I can open up InDesign and "place" the psd file within InDesign (then export and save as a jpeg). So I don't think the files are necessarily corrupted. I uninstalled Photoshop and reinstalled it last night, but there's no change.
    If you have any ideas, I'd appreciate it. Or, should I repost my question with this more complete info? Thank you!

  • CS6 Photoshop crashes when trying to use type tool or opening up .psd files. Any ideas on how to fix it???

    I have Adobe CS6 Design Standard (MAC). I have had it about a year and a half and use it a ton! Just yesterday while I was using Photoshop, I clicked to use the type tool, the "initializing type tool" box popped up then a few seconds later the whole program crashed. I tried opening it back up and every time I did it just kept crashing. I restarted and shut down my computer, but still no solution. I even uninstalled the program then reinstalled. Same thing. All of my other tools work just fine (brush tool, eraser, crop, etc.). Also, when I try to open up a .psd file the program crashes as well.
    I tried searching the internet for solutions, but couldn't find much. One suggestion was to delete the Adobe Photoshop program settings file, I did that but it still didn't work. After each crash a report would be sent to Adobe, then another window would pop up saying that Adobe has found a solution for the recent crash. There is a link that says "please CLICK HERE for further details" but the link doesn't take me anywhere. It just doesn't work!
    Has anyone had this happen to them? Any ideas on how to fix it? I really need to get this up and running again!!!

    This is a user to user forum and Adobe Staff does drop by.
    First thing to try is Reset the Type Tool by right-clicking on its' icon in the Options bar.
    If you still have problems, it could be related to fonts. Here is a step by step troubleshooting help doc for that.

  • When using external editor, iPhoto does not re-import the .psd file

    Hi,
    I've just started using Photoshop Elements 6 as a more advanced editor in iPhoto. When I do the 'External Edits' wihtout adding layers etc. and re-save as a JPEG then the photo will re-appear in iPhoto as the edited file.
    However if I do the external edit and add layers then save as a .PSD, then the file does not update.. I have to save the .PSD file in a desktop folder then import the file after.
    Is there anyway to force iPhoto to pick up the .PSD automatically after an update if I save it to the iPhoto library?
    Thanks,
    Glyn

    Glyn:
    The folllowing might be of some help:
    Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
    1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
    2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
    3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
    This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
    NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
    If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
    If you import a psd file initially then you can edit it via the external editor, with or without layers, and do a normal save and iPhoto will recognize the changes.
