Using PSE9 Plug-In or Aperture?

I have heard of Dfine 2 by Nik Software as a plug-in.
My ultimate question is if this plug-in is worth it or is it superseded by a capability on Aperture (or another plugin/application) getting rid of the noise and softening skin tones on high ISO photographs?
If Dfine 2 is better, then, is this plug-in able to go on PSE9 or just the CS5, and/or can it be a plug-in on Aperture?

Download Dfine 2 and do a Version comparison with Aperture's built-in noise-reduction tool. The trial is free (and your own judgement is worthsome). Would you mind posting your results here? I have done a similar test, but not on people or at high ISO. Thanks in advance.
Here is a link to the Dfine "How-to" video on Nik's site. Worth watching. The video is shot using Dfine 2 in Photoshop, but the controls and the interface are the same as the Aperture plug-in.

Be sure to set your Aperture export preference for 16-bit TIFF ("Aperture→Preferences→Export→External Editor File Format").
When you use the plug-in, Aperture will duplicate the currently selected Version, export it in the file format specified, and open the plug-in with the newly created exported file loaded. When you save and exit the plug-in, control is returned to Aperture with your edited file (now a TIFF in my example) imported and saved over the duplicate Version created prior to launching the plug-in.
I have heard nothing but good about Noise Ninja, btw. I would have purchased it had I not I purchased Dfine as part of the Nik package.
Afaik, Nik tools come as either Aperture & Lightroom plug-ins, or as Photoshop plug-ins. If you want both (Photoshop and Aperture/Lightroom), you have to purchase both.
I think Dfine 2 is a 32-bit program. (If you are running Aperture 3 in 64-bit mode, you will be asked to close it and then it will be automatically re-opened in 32-bit mode.) Iirc, Nik has stated that the 64-bit version will be available before the end of the year.

Aperture stripping caption info using aperturetoFTPpro plug in

I have been uploading large jpegs onto another server using ftp plug-in with Aperture. But it strips the photo info, captions etc from the file, which is crucial information for my clients. Does any one know why this is happening, If I could ftp directly from iphoto or Photoshop elements even, it would be easier for me as I don't find aperture useful for multiple batch changes in file names and captions.
Currently I have been editing the file names and comments in iphoto, exporting 'version name' (other wise it exports the original file name) to a folder on the desktop and then importing these files into aperture where I use a plug in AperturetoFTPpro. I do have the export version box checked and not the 'master' box - By now i've lost track of which it thinks the 'master' or 'version' is!
not sure what's causing the problem, iphoto or aperture.
When i look at the metadata in aperture, I can't see the captions, but if i open the same file in photoshop and do 'apple i' the info is there.

Have you checked with the Font Book Utility if there are still any font families marked with an exclamation mark as duplicates?
If the upgrade to 3.2.2. does not resolve your problem, try if running Aperture in 32bit mode will help.
I am not entirely sure if duplicate fonts might cause the problem - the last crash with nik plug-ins reported in this forum that were related to duplicate Arial fonts (Re: Nik Plugin Crash Issues) was with the viveza plug-in, not with the colorefex plug-in, also the crash occured when selecting the plug-in from the menu "Performing @selector(a_editWithPlugIn:) from sender NSMenuItem", not with a bad access when addressing the graphics card.

So your problem might be related to the ATIRadeonX3000GLDriver; maybe the plugin is still using an old Snow Leopard version, that may be incompatible with Lion?

Aperture crashes when using NIK Plug-In

I have a Mac Pro 2008 8-core 2.8 with 16 GB ram and the ATI HD 5870.
Sometimes in Aperture 3 (newest update) when using NIK plug-in colorefex pro 4 it crashes.
It only crashes when performing certain tasks, like certain recipes. Or more often when I try to edit multiple images at once with the plug-in.
The plug-in works fine with PS, but you can not edit mulitple images at a time.
As per NIK's suggestion, I deleted any duplicate arial fonts but it hasn't helped.

Have you checked with the Font Book Utility if there are still any font families marked with an exclamation mark as duplicates?
If the upgrade to 3.2.2. does not resolve your problem, try if running Aperture in 32bit mode will help.
I am not entirely sure if duplicate fonts might cause the problem - the last crash with nik plug-ins reported in this forum that were related to duplicate Arial fonts (Re: Nik Plugin Crash Issues) was with the viveza plug-in, not with the colorefex plug-in, also the crash occured when selecting the plug-in from the menu "Performing @selector(a_editWithPlugIn:) from sender NSMenuItem", not with a bad access when addressing the graphics card.

So your problem might be related to the ATIRadeonX3000GLDriver; maybe the plugin is still using an old Snow Leopard version, that may be incompatible with Lion?

Issues using Elements 12 as an Aperture 3 plug in

I have just upgraded to Elements 12 from Elements 9. When I use Elements 12 as a plug in from Aperture 3 it creates a PSD file, opens up Elements 12 in Editor, but does not export the image over. Any suggestions why?

Most likely you chose the logical file instead of the correct one. The actual PSE 12 editor is buried deep in the Support Files folder in the PSE 12 folder:

Actually, there is a Nik/Nikon connection — but I am pretty sure it is irrelevant to the OP's question. The connection is that Capture NX2 was written as a joint venture between Nikon and Nik. (The name similarity is a coincidence.)
Capture NX2 is a cool program that incorporates the features of Nik's Viveza and Nikon's Raw processing engine, along with some other powerful image adjustment features. It provides, like Aperture, a losses workflow. Unlike Aperture, the adjustments (Edit Steps in C-NX terminology) are saved in the original NEF file along with the un-altered raw data. Multiple versions can be saved in a single NEF.

Is the 3rd party plug-in 'Synthetic Aperture Color Finesse' which comes with Adobe After Effects, free to use? 'Synthetic Aperture Color Finesse' installs its documentation in the plug-in’s subfolder in the Plug-ins folder.
I cannot locate anywhere on the Adobe site which specifies that this plug-in is free to use for educational institutions.
Can anyone assist please?

which plug-in do you want to install?
some of the plug-ins come with an installer on the disk image, you click the installer and it will install it in its proper location.
For others you move the plug-in into to System Library or your User Library:
Your Hard disk > Library > Application Support >Aperture > Plug-Ins > Edit
or
Your Home Folder > Library > Application Support >Aperture > Plug-Ins > Edit
If it is an "Edit" plug-in, it goes into the "Edit" subfolder, "Export" plug-ins into the "Export" subfolder.
You can tell by the extension, what kind of plug-in it is.
E.G. BorderFX.ApertureExport is an export plug-in, BorderFXEditPlugin.ApertureEdit an edit plug-in.

P.S. In OS Lion the Libraries are hidden by default: To reveal your User Library activate the Finder and select from the main Finder menu:
    Finder > Go , then hold down the ⌥-option-key, untill the Library appears in the drop.down menu.
To show the System Library:
     Finder > Go > Go to Folder
then enter   / Library

This is just basic user registration page and I am checking for username duplication.
Now the problem is page loads properly but in background it shows the error (Java Script error)
Error: Could not locate widget implementation for "bindevent" in "struts.widget" registered to namespace "struts"
and the Event I want to execute is not being executed.
I have added jar file for DOJO.
Please help me to solve this problem.

Place the plugin bundle, FlashAlbumexporter.ApertureExport, in your Aperture Export plugin directory (Users -> "your user name" -> Library -> Application Support -> Aperture -> Plug-Ins -> Export).
NOTE: If this is your first Aperture plug-in, the folders Plug-Ins and Export may not exist. In this case just create them first.

Strange behavior after using NIK plug-ins

Every once in a while I encounter this strange behavior of Aperture. I first process the NEF's in Aperture (white balance, Exposure, Enhance... and, when needed, Cropping) and then I fine tune the image with the NIK plug-ins; when needed DfIne 2.0, Viveza, Color Efex Pro 3.0 and Sharpener Pro 3.0 Output Sharpener.
If I look at the processed picture then, I get a perfect presentation of the photo;

But when I press Z to zoom into a 100% preview I get this;

When I select the Loup in the normal view mode I get this;

This doesn't happen with all my pictures, yesterday I processed a series of 8 pictures an 6 of them showed this behavior the other two acted normal and I can't see what I did differently whit these last two.
When I export the strangely behaving photo's to a Tiff or a Jpeg, I get perfectly normal pictures.
The original NEF behaves normal. I have seen this behavior with NEF's from a Nikon D200, D2x and a D300. I have Aperture 2.1.2 running on a 2.33 GHz Intel Core Duo MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.5.6
Does anybody know what's happening and if so, how to solve this problem?

I did some testing and what I found is too weird to be true.
First this mashed up look doesn't only happen after using NIK plug-ins, it also happens when making a roundtrip to Photoshop, given that certain conditions are met.
Give it a try yourself. Crop an image to an uneven pixelcount dimension, for example 4227 x 2797 and make a roundtrip to Photoshop. Then have a 100% view look at the new image in Aperture. You'll have a mashed up view, at least I do.
Now crop the same original image to an even pixelcount dimension, for example 4228 x 2798 and make an roundtrip to Photoshop once more. When you have a 100% view of the new image now, you'll see a perfectly normal photo.

TS2518 Anyone else having trouble with plug-ins in Aperture 3.2.3?

I am having problems with Aperture 3.2.3 using my Nik plug-ins. I have updated everything from my iMac to Aperture to my plug-ins. I've done a repair permissions, restarted, and all that as well.
The problem is that when I edit a photo using my plug-ins, and hit save, instead of it normally rendering all the changes, the photo appears normal. If I have more than two edits, and I hold scroll all the way over (from first to last), it will show the edits to the last photo only, but only as long as I continue to hold the scroll arrow, once I let go, it returns to normal. Other times, when I edit a photo, hit save, it appears normal, but if I close Aperture, reopen it, the edits are there. Obviously, this is not very conducive to getting much done. I have Photoshop 12.0.4, but my plug-ins are specific to Aperture, and I actually prefer Aperture, but I've had minor stabilty issues with it from day one, and this is just really problematic.

Nik PLug-ins with Aperture

Greetings, This is for anyone using Nik Software plug-ins with Aperture. Is there a way to back out of adjustments once you've saved your work in the Nik editor? When using with Photoshop, the Nik adjustment will create a "layer". Deselecting the layer will allow you to essentially remove the adjustment. I don't see any way of doing that in Aperture. Am I missing it, or are you basically down the road with the adjustment once you make it?

Once you save in NIK, the adjustments are "baked in." There's no way to go back and remove them. What NIK does is save the TIFF file that Aperture creates and hands over to it, with the NIK adjustments. This won't affect the original RAW file.
You could always go back and send that same TIFF file to NIK an indefinite number of times. It wouldn't really be "non-destructive" but you can re-do or tweak any adjustments you want to tweak.

Can't use iStockphoto plug-in

Can't use iStockphoto Aperture plug-in. Error message says can't log in automatically because password may have changed, try logging in manually. Tried that. Password hadn't changed. Confirmed that I was using the right one and still can't log in. Error message says: Denied access: Invalid apiKey. Searched the forums and see that this is a known problem and the apiKey thing may be on iStock's end, but couldn't find anything newer than 2011 or so. I've used this plug-in without a problem within the last few months. Have been back and forth with the iStock help desk. Cleared cache and cookies in browser, tried logging in to iStock through https URL and a couple of other things. No change. Any help would be most appreciated.

I'm not suggesting that it's Adobe's fault. What I want to know is whether Adobe can provide me with one of the versions between the CS3 that I purchased back when it was current and the CS6 that I have available with my cloud subscription?
I mean, somewhere you have this software IND4, 5 or 5.5. Can I download it?

HT4007 DxO plug-ins in Aperture

in previous versions of Aperture and DxO, I had the use of the DxO software through a plug-in in Aperture. It has disappeared and I can't find any infpormation relating to how I might get it back.
Any experiences out there?

Check the version of the plug-in you have, if it is compatible with the latest Aperture version. With Aperture 3.4.3 and Mt. Lion all plug-ins must be sand-boxed, see: Aperture 3.4 and later: Some third-party plug-ins are no longer compatible
If your plug-in is compatible with Aperture 3.4, it should be installed in the Applications Support folder in your User Library or System Library:
/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins/
either in the sub folders "Export" or "Edit".

Cannot delete a Plug-in from Aperture 3.1

Unable to delete a plug-in from showing up in Aperture 3.1 by dragging the plugin from the Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plugins folder, and relaunching Aperture. The same old plugin (32bit) still shows on the menu and is also active when editing with plugin even after deleting from the plug-in folder.. How can I get this plugin to go away so an upgraded version can be put in place and used. I have quit Aperture, Shut down the computer, tried everything short of reinstalling the 3.1 upgrade to Aperture. Help would be greatly appreciated.
