Using Quick Time movies with Logic

Hello all,
I am writing some music to a quick time movie and everything is working fine...then I scroll back and forth a little to fast....and then the movie starts to skip.
Problem is I can't get Logic to "Clear" itself, even if I restart or import a different movie, then come back to this movie, it still skips, any ideas...
Scott

Scott,
You're correct, the semi-colon is used to designate drop frame. I've seen way too many timecode burns that didn't match the actual frame rate, even when the footage was provided by supposedly professional editors. The only way to check it is to run it alongside Logic's timecode counter and see how well they jibe at different points in the movie, and based on your last post, you have the correct frame rate and burn.
As far as skipping, I don't think it has anything to do with how fast you scroll. Sounds to me like your hard drive is having trouble keeping up with the data stream. Is your movie located on its own drive, or is it on your system or audio drives? Best scenario is to have the movie streaming off of a dedicated drive.
There are two other scenarios almost guaranteed to cause skipping:
1. You have that movie open in QT while you're also trying to display it in Logic.
2. You have two or more songs open in Logic that reference the same movie. This is a sure-fire way to encounter skipping.

  • Creating Quick Time Movie with Photos' Titles?

When exporting an album to a Quick Time MOV file is there any way to export the titles for photos too? If not, is there a way to create a "universal" slide show that plays on all OS's with titles?

    EarthBased:
What is the ultimate destination of this slideshow? If it's for a DVD project post back as there are other steps to take to make sure the titles display on screen. Or you can use a 3rd party slideshow application that gives you more flexibility as to where the titles are placed. PhotoPresenter is one (very inexpensive) and has over 20 animated themes as well.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Can't use Final Cut Express Export Using Quick Time Conversion with iDVD.

I am using iDVD 08v 7.0.4 and until 3 days ago I could import and create iDVD's using Final Cut Express export using Quick Time Conversion. There was an update that downloaded for iDVD. Since then, I can only use Final Cut Express Exports that is a self contained Quick Time Movie.
I have never had this kind of apple and apple problem. I am disappointed that I'm having apple issues like this.

Are you on latest 10.5.x release and latest FCE updates? Your info line says 10.5.1 and you didn't list FCE version. Not saying that will fix problem, but might help. You also might want to explain how you did your Quicktime conversion.

  • Quick time movie with only sound

I got some HD footage that was given to me. This footage has been exported from Liquid run on a Intel based Mac using Windows.
When I try to play it I get that I am missing some components or something. When importing the footage into FCE i get the sound, but the picture shows only white. Obviously I need some kind of codec, but I am unsure which one. Can anybody help??

You need to have Final Cut Pro installed to work with that format. It's not available with FCE or with the QuickTime system codecs.

  • I'm getting artifacts and noise when I converted a dv file to a dv quick time movie . HELP

I am trying to create a dv quick time movie with a resolution of 576x 256, 16 bit from a avi file that is 720x480 millions of color . When I have done this in after effects and made a dv quick time movie it is very noisy (both image and background). I am stymied. Tried to use thenoise effects- and blurring effects to no satisfaction. ANyone out there have any suggestions???? I need immediate help

    which codec are you suggesting
If Stan's right and that has been asked for by the client, use that.  If not, I like both the Lagarith codec and the UT codec.  Both are lossless and will preserve maximum quality.
are you talking about doing this in AF or Premiere Pro
    Either way works.

  • What actually is Quick Time movie?

    Hello guys,
when exporting my HDV video project from FCP using Quick Time movie option, what actually is it? When I look at file info, it says .mov file, Quick Time movie format, codec HDV 1920x1080. So what is Quick Time movie? And how it differs from let's say QuickTime in Compressor?
    Thank you.

As has already been stated, a .mov file is like a box that contains video and audio. The video and audio could be made from any number of codecs.
There is NO universal high quality video file format that will playback an all systems or platforms. In order for ANY video/audio file to playback on any given system/platform, it MUST HAVE the codecs used to make those files installed on that system. There are many QuickTime .mov files that will NOT playback on a Mac, IF the specific codec needed isn't installed on that Mac.
The same is true with the .avi files format; .avi is just a box like QuickTime.
You're best bet would be to identify the playback systems requirements for video/audio files and then target your output for that. Do it for every system/platform/delivery method that the file will be played on.
For example, I produced a program that would be played at the main branch of our library. Their playback system required an MPEG-2 Transport Stream and had very specific bit rate requirements. They also wanted the program to air on the local PBS channel, which had totally different requirements. And finally, they wanted several copies on DVD to distribute to donors whom helped make the exhibit possible. So with just one program, I had to output three different file types for this one project. This is also true of television broadcast. Different broadcasters will have different requirements. Some want BetaSP tape, some want DigiBeta. Some want an MPEG-2 Program Stream and some might even want a DVD-Video. Don't expect there to be a "one file fits all" type of situation.

We are editing together some quick time movie clips but we can't get the sound to come up.
Is there something we are doing wrong? Can you split the voice from the visual when you bring these clips into Final Cut?

A QuickTime movie can be made from any number of codecs. Which one are you working with?
If it's an MPEG video, chances are it will need to be demuxed. You can use MPEG Streamclip for this and other conversions.

  • Can i export an Imovie project with special effects as a quick time movie then import into final cut express keeping the special effects?

Hi, Can i export an Imovie project with special effects as a quick time movie then import into final cut express keeping the special effects?

Absolutely.  Go to File->Export->QuickTime Movie (do NOT use QuickTime Conversion).  Make sure you check the Self-Contained box.  The export will be an exact copy of your Sequence, complete with any filters or other effects you've added.  Import the self-contained movie back into the project (or another project) if needed.

  • I have AVI files that I need to be MOV files so that I can edit them in Final Cut Pro. I am going to use Quick Time Pro for this....do I have to 'export' it or can I just 'save as', or is there even a difference? Thanks in advance for your help!

I strongly recommend you use compressor to do the conversion (if it will open the files - since quicktime will open them, it will more than likely do it.
Compressor allows you to customize presets and save them and apply them to multiple files.  Although the interface may seem daunting, it's actually pretty simple.
Even if you can edit the avi in fcp, it's not a good idea.  Liable to cause problems down the road.

  • How do I export a Final Cut Express 4 movie using quick time conversion without stretching the image?

I have created a movie in Final Cut Express 4 using videos and still photos of various aspect ratios and resolutions.  Some of the photos are verticals.  When I try to use File>Export>Using Quick Time Conversion, my images end up being stretched horizontally when the video is finally processed.  I have tried preserving the aspect ratio but the video still ends up stretched horizontally.  What should my settings be in Quick time conversion?  I just want to make a video for YouTube.
    Thanks.  -Bob

If you shoot in one of the following modes you should be able to Log & Transfer directly into FCE:
HD:  1920x1080/60i (FX or FH mode)
HD:  1440x1080/60i (HQ or LP mode)
    SD:  720x480/60i
1080/60p (PS mode) seems to be the default mode in your camcorder.  FCE only supports progressive video in 720p50 or 720p60.   That's probably why you have had to import via iMovie.
It would be better to upgrade to Final Cut Pro X, the version currently supported.  FCE was discontinued over 18 months ago and is not supported on Lion or Mountain Lion.

I have used still photos to make a Quick Time movie using FCE.  The DVD made using i-DVD looks somewhat grainy and the motion isn’t smooth when played on my TV.  Other DVD’s I have made play much better and I am wondering if the problem is my Quick Time movie settings.  The Dimensions and size of the problem movie are 1920X1080 and 584 MB respectively, while the movies that play better  have Dimensions of 853X480 and are about 1.3 GB in size.  Is this the source of my problem and how do I change things for the better.

Are you exporting to QuickTime Movie, or to QuickTime Conversion?   For iDVD, you need to export to QuickTime Movie.   Exporting to QT Conversion will kill the quality if you are moving the video from FCE to iDVD.
The file size per se makes no difference.
What size (pixel dimensions) are the photos that you put into your 1920x1080 sequence?  Also, exactly what are the sequence properties ... is it 1920x1080i60 ... or i50?  In North America it should be i60.
853X480 is an odd frame size.  Where are you seeing this number?  It would appear to be DV-NTSC, which has a frame size of 720x480.  Your 1920x1080 frame size would not be DV-NTSC, it would be Apple Intermediate Codec.   DV and AIC will look different, for sure.
Also, your quality setting in iDVD can affect the final video.  You may want to check that also (in iDVD Preferences > Projects).  Set it to Professional Quality if at all possible.

  • When I import a Quick Time movie into the timeline using Final Cut Express, why does it need rendering?

when I import a Quick Time movie into the timeline using Final Cut Express, why does it need rendering?

Because your clip properties do not match your sequence settings.
It will help a lot if you provide details ...
    FCE Easy Setup
Sequence settings (vid rate, frame size, compressor)
Source of your clips (camcorder make/model, etc)
Clip properties (vid rate, frame size, compressor)

  • Publishing quick time movie from a fla with embeded video

I'm exporting my flash movie as a quick time movie (setting
the flash version in 5 on the publish settings), and everything is
ok except that the videos that are embeded just dissapear. Is there
a way to import .movs into a .fla and still being able to export to
    whole thing into quick time?

My guess is that you import video to flash using codec that
    is not supported in
QT player. Do the following. Open new document and set it
    right away to FLASH 5,
than import the video and you will notice your options has
    drastically change to
very minimal. Anyhow, import, do whatever you wish to it,
    export as QT MOV file.
Should work on first go. If does not, please upload that
    video you trying to use,
I will check it out for you.
