Using RAW format

I am the new owner of a Rebel T3i and trying hard to learn all the new things that have happening in photography after a rather lengthy hiatus (~30 years!).  There seems to be some consensus that one is further ahead if all the decisions( eg. exposure, color saturation, style, etc.) are made in camera while the picture is being taken.  Later adjustments with software would then be minimal touchups.  If I record the photo in .JPG format I immediately see the picture as I expect it to be.  If I record the photo in .CR2 (RAW) format I am told that information such as style is "noted" and used to show me a preview.  I would expect the preview both on the camera LCD screen and on the computer in Lightroom to then be identical to the .JPG preview because it should be using the "noted" information.  I can clearly see that there is a difference in the preview of the two formats, with the RAW format usually showing a little more high key!  I would like to see the RAW image presented as I manipulated it while taking the picture because I cannot rely on my memory about what I did, but then I want to be able to manipulate such things as the style should I want to improve it (in Lightroom).  Also I wonder if the "noted" information is carried through and used by Adobe Camera Raw in the same way as in Digital Photo Professional, or does Adobe lose the information.
Can anyone elaborate on this for me?  Thank you so much!

A RAW file is exactly what the camera recorded when the photo was taken (in computer language) and as such is a pure file. NOTHING is altered until you run it through some form of software & create a jpg or tif etc. The reason for this will become very obvious as you progress on the learning journey. Because the camera stored the data exactly as shot you have the opportunity to manipulate it in so many ways over & over again without ever tampering with the original data. That can't be said about a jpg, which has already lost some of the original information as it was processed in camera using software that was built into the camera to do a specific thing to the photo as decided by those who planned & developed that software, BUT they can't possibly know exactly what every photographer wanted to capture, so by having the RAW file stay untouched they've given us the power to override their idea of what we were seeing in our minds when we took the shot.
This may help you understand the idea better.

  • Black and white pictures and raw format

I started to use raw format. however, when i shoot pictures in black and white and download them to bridge, they get converted to color pioctures. Does anybody know why and what to do about this?

    In addition to this,
Raw is Raw, meaning it captures all the data your sensor was capable of. It creates also a jpeg preview extracted in camera from this Raw file to show at your camera viewer and as thumbnails on your computer.
You need a Raw converter to translate the Raw data to a picture in RGB (demosaicing they call this process).
And every setting you choose in camera for shooting is just added as metadata like all Raw settings in the Raw converter are added as metadata to reflect the changes you have made. If you want you can delete those data and start all over again with the original file because this stays as it was taken when shot, regardless all earlier applied settings.
Bridge uses Adobe Camera Raw for converting (demosaicing) the files and has it own code like others have their way of converting. It is possible that the vendor software delivered with your camera is capable of showing the in camera settings right away but then like Curt already stated it is just a reflection of your settings, the original is still the color image you have shot.
There are lots of ways (and far better then in camera setting) to convert your color image to black and white. Just start a google search for some video tutorials and choose the one you like best for your workflow.

  • Which RAW format of Digital camera does iPhoto '08 support?

I couldn't find any document about that on the apple website.
I've been using Panasonic DMC-FZ8 which is nice one but iPhoto 6 doesn't support yet.
I'm going to buy iLife '08 if iPhoto '08 supports it.
    Anyone knows?

    Hi TD,
    Thanks for your help.
I didn't know it up to the OS level.
Because I can use RAW format of FZ8 on another software.
And when iPhoto updated, apple announces new RAW format support camera.
This is the one of software which can read FZ8 RAW file.
    http://www.isl.co.jp/SILKYPIX/japanese/product/ds3/camera.html
Sorry, it's a Japanese but you can see the list.
Actually, I used this on OSX 10.4.8.
And I've tried another software before which can do it as well.
But iPhoto 6 doesn't read FZ8 RAW file on OSX 10.4.10...

  • I need help! when I am importing my NEF files from my D3300 camera into lightroom 5 and try to use the "copy as DNG" button I always get an error message saying that "saying the file is not recognized by the raw format support"

I need help! when I am importing my NEF Raw files from my D3300 camera into lightroom 5 and try to use the "copy as DNG" button I always get an error message saying that "saying the file is not recognized by the raw format support". The whole purpose of that button is so that the file can be recognized... How can I make the "copy as DNG" button work as it is supposed too?? Thank you

Thank you for responding. So I essentially will never be able to use that button in lightroom 5? do I need to get LR 6? Will there ever be an update for LR 5 that will enable me to use it?
Does DNG Converter work within LR or do I have to upload pictures to my computer and then make a second copy in DNG format. and then go into LR and use them?
    Thank you @dj_paige

  • Just purchased Nikon D610. tried to import 3 images and got this message: The files are not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom. How do I fix this frustrating problem. Have been using Lightroom for years also Nikon products without any prior

How do I import images. Have a message that says: The files are not recognized by the raw format suppot in Lightroom. Am using a Mac version 10.9.4. the import is from a new Nikon D610. Am using LR 4.4 Please help Adobe is useless as a support.

Each camera must be supported explicity and your LR version is years older than your camera.
According to Adobe's Camera-support page, you need at least LR 5.3 to work with your D610 NEFs in LR:
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
If you don't want to upgrade to LR 5, or can't due to your OS being too old, then it might work to use the latest DNG Converter and create DNGs from your NEFs, which should open in LR 4.x.  You can find the DNG Converter here:  http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates

  • Hello, what is the best way for me to convert RW2 raw format for use in Photoshop CC

Hello, what is the best way for me to convert RW2 raw format for use in Photoshop CC. I would appreciate any help with this.

Thanks for the quick help. I do have to leave for work. When I try to
download the images from the camera they seem to only be in jpeg (I don't
see any rw2 or raw files to download). If I select the jpeg file it seems
to only download a jpeg file. I do understand that I do have the option to
open the jpeg in RAW. In doing this, is all the extra information included
in the RAW file there or is it lost coming from the camera
Once again thank you for trying to make me understand how this works.
    Have a great day.

  • I have a Leica V-lux 4 using RWL as it's raw format. How can I open this ?

I have a Leica V-lux 4 using RWL as it's raw format. How can I open this?

What version of photoshop and operating system are you using?
Those are camera raw files which would open in the camera raw dialog in photoshop by using File>Open.
Depending on your version of photoshop, they may or may not be supported

  • Why can I not use LR4 with my new camera raw format?

My new camera raw format is unrecognizable with LR4. Anyway around this?

Yes use the Adobe DNG converter to convert the proprietary raw files to DNG raw files. Then LR4 will be able to read them.
    The Adobe converter is free.

iMac with 3TB drive and 32 GIG of RAM. Three DROBO storage systems for data and backup.

Try the alternatives, or wait for reports by the users who already migrated. For example, Capture One is more similar to Aperture than Lightroom:
    http://www.cnet.com/news/phase-ones-updated-image-editor-throws-apple-aperture-u sers-a-lifeline/
    http://www.photographybay.com/2014/10/01/capture-one-pro-8-unveiled-features-app le-aperture-migrate-option/
I'll keep my main libraries in Aperture, as long as it compatible with the operating system.  If that no longer works, I'll start a new main library with digikam. If there is no native Mac application, that offers what I need for my workflow, I'll switch back to open source software.

  • Im running lightroom 4 and just purchased the Sony A7 and using its sd card. when I   tried to load the photos, I got a message "the files are not recognized by the raw format support in lightroom"

Tried loading my raw files shot w my new Sony a7 and its sd card into lightroom4. Got a message: "The files are not recognized by the raw format in lightroom"
Does Lightroom 4 not work with the Sony A7?
    Thanks,

Lightroom 4 cannot read the RAW photos from a Sony A7
You would have to download and install the FREE Adobe DNG Converter version 8.5 and then convert your RAW to DNG, and then import the DNGs into Lightroom 4
You could also purchase Lightroom 5.5, which will have the capability to read the RAWs directly.

Lightroom 6 will not open raw files from my new canon d7 mark II camera.  The program says "The files are not recognized by the raw format supported in Lightroom.  The Lightroom 6 is up to date.  Is there a quick fix to this issue?

  • Lightroom 5 cannot export files in original Raw format (LR 5.4, Mac, OS 10.9.4).

A client has the following problem: When trying to export files in the original Raw format (.CR2), the operation failed and a dialog informs us that "Some export operations were not performed". We can export JPEGs just fine.
After lots of testing, this is what we discovered:  The problem does not appear to be catalog-based; we run into the same problem using a test catalog.  The export operation works fine, however, with the same test catalog and images on two other machines, and it even works fine on the same machine with a new user admin account that we created.
So it appears to be something associated with the user account, , or with how LR is interacting with the user account, but I cannot figure out what it might be. We can copy the Raw files when using the Finder to do so. But not via Lightroom.  Any thoughts, ideas of suggestion would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks, Sean

As part of your testing make sure you've tried exporting JPGs from the same folder as the CR2s you're exporting as original, and export JPGs from CR2s to the same folder as you're exporting your originals.  This would test LR's read and write permissions from and to the folders being used.
From this document you can see that all the LR files other than the program, are under the /Users folder with different values possible for each user, so the difference could be that the users that work are using the original LR defaults, if you have just started using LR with them after you started having this problem, or at least that the user with the problem has some oddball settings that are interfering with Export as Original.
Preference and other file locations in Lightroom 5
You can test for the Preferences being off by either copying the preferences from a user that has the problem to a user that doesn't have the problem--probably through an external or common folder, or be deleting the preferences file from the user that has the problem and see if it resolves.  Moving the preferences file or renaming it may be better than deleting it if no change is seen, then you can restore the preferences back by moving or renaming the file back to the original location and name.

  • Why is this so long to recognize a new RAW format?

    Hi,
I'm new to Mac and to Aperture. I use it with Dimage A1. It's great!
But I am disappointed because I also use Pentax K10D which is not recognized by Aperture.
I notice that it needed much time to import *ist RAW format. Is this so difficult to integrate new RAW?
Does Apple consider others than Canon/Nikon as minor?
    Thanks
Macbook Pro 2GHz Intel core duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Pentax K10D - Minolta Dimage A1

I remember waiting 4 months to get Aperture because the (hugely successful) Nikon D200 took nearly 6 months before being recognized by Aperture.
At the time I though it was a "ramping up" problem and would stay isolated.
Time has proven my optimism was mistaken, on that particular point.
don't get me wrong: Aperture has changed my life as a digital Photographer... a story I often tell and demonstrate. However, releasing camera coompatibility updates few and far between is a massive strategic mistake... of a magnitude Apple never makes with hardware, iPod, retail etc....
So I guess there is a clearly visible dichotomy at work here:
    - on the one hand Apple wants to be a player in the creative pro apps market.
    - on the other hand the haphazardness of their SW update release schedule speaks volumes (and not just AP: look at the Logic Pro udpate calendar: nothing for how many years now???)...
Digital photography is at a major turning point now... the years 2006-2009 will see more new "serious" cameras released than the ten years before.. and probably the ten years after. Not being reactive during that time is surprising.
    $
I don't know what is holding up the AP team on the Pentax, Leica (and now fuji) compatibility, but it's hurting them a lot now... and blaming it on the Leopard schedule, for good reasons or bad, is a tragedy in terms of pro photographers perception...
I hope Aperture will not turn out to be for the enthusiast once the pros have left the building... I'd hate to witness that happening.

  • A problem occurs when saving in the Raw format.

I just started photographing using the Raw format.  When I edit a picture and then save it in Photoshop CS5, the file appears blacked out but when I click on the file, the picture comes up perfectly in CS5.  Does anyone know why this happens and how do I correct it?  This effect does not happen when I save a picture in the jpeg format.
    gobruins44

I think it depends on how you read the OP's post. It could also mean that he started using RAW from the camera, when he saves the file using the default format (psd) that there is no thumbnail in explorer. But when saved as a jpg there is.
I deduced that from the statement:
"the file appears blacked out but when I click on the file, the picture comes up perfectly in CS5."

  • Why are my RAW format files no longer supported?

Using a Mac OS X 10.5.8 with versions of Adobe Photoshop CS5, Adobe Bridge CS5 and Camera Raw Plug-in.
Shot .CR2 raw format photos on my Canon EOS 450D (Same as Rebel XSi)
Have always been able to open them successfully in Camera Raw and Photoshop. Now says that the files and/or my camera model/make is not supported by the Camera Raw Plug-in nor by my Photoshop.
Tried converting to DNG first with Adobe DNG Converter 7.1 and even that says that the source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files.
Previous raw files taken with the same camera on the same computer with the same (or even earlier) versions of all these programs have always worked. I can still open those successfully too. However just these new ones I cannot. Nothing has changed about my camera in that time...
What can I do and why is it that these files are no longer supported?

ACR 6.7 and ACR 7.1 RC can open XSi CR2 files at least on Windows 7.  I just checked.
However, on Windows, at least, the DNGC 7.1 RC has a quirk in that when you want to convert a folder of CR2s to DNGs, you have to click the Select button when the folder is highlighted in the file selection dialog and the folder listed in the location area of the file selection dialog.   You cannot click INTO the folder and then click Select, which sounds like what you are doing.  If you do click into the folder and click Select it’ll say there are no compatible files that exist.   I think previous versions of the DNGC would recover properly if you clicked into the folder before clicking Select.
Since your files cannot be opened in ACR, either, then perhaps they are corrupted.  You might post a download link to one of them in a message here so others can have a look.  If you don’t have a large file hosting service, then set up a free account on www.dropbox.com or www.yousendit.com or similar, upload your file, there, then post the public download link, here, in a reply.
