Using restore disk on Satellite L305-S5919

Two years ago we bought our daughter a Toshiba Satellite L305-S5919 to use at college.  Near the end of her first year it overheated and she needed to have a new hard drive installed, which was done under warranty at Best Buy.
This spring she started getting an intermittent, high-pitched noise.  When the noise started, her computer would either freeze or slow way down.
We were told by the geek squad at Best Buy to remove a lot of the startup programs, which we did.  Still had the noise. I updated her anti-virus and ran it, installed all the updates that had been downloaded but never installed, ran disk cleanup, and ran disk defragmenter.
Then since it was still making the high-pitched noise I tried scandisk.
Scandisk showed the following message - I think it was on the 4th step:  "Windows replaced bad clusters in file 153340 of name \SYSTEM~1\{A45BA~1"
After that it wouldn't boot past the Toshiba splash screen.  I can use the F2 and F12 commands from that screen, but it I just let it go it says a "disk read error occurred press ctrl-alt-delete to restart" - which just does the same thing over and over and over.  One time it made a sound like breaking glass, other times the hard drive just grinds away.
So I went back to Best Buy and the geek squad said use the Restore disks that my daughter had bought last year when she had the hard drive replaced.
I am currently running disk 1 of the restore disks.  The geek squad said it could take 5 hours to complete - is that correct?  At first there was the word Microsoft with some bars running across the bottom of the screen.  Now that's gone away and I have the cursor arrow in the middle of a black screen.  The hard drive indicator is faintly flashing intermittently.  For a while it was making grinding noises, then squeaky sounds.  Now the only noise I hear is from the cooling mat underneath the laptop (don't want it to overheat again).
Should it be showing me any progress report on the screen?  Is it stuck?  Should I eject the restore disk and start over?  Should I take the laptop to the nearest bridge and throw it into the river?  Or am I just being impatient?
Assuming the restore works, is the hard drive likely to fail again?  Why can't hard drives last longer than a year?

I am wondering why you haven't recd any replies from the "Super Contibutors" here?
Almost identical problem here in my exact same Toshiba model.  PC should be covered by the Lemon Law, just like cars.  As far as I can tell, if a hard drive caves in within 2 years it's a lemon in the first place, pretending to be a PC.
Toshiba should make Recovery Media FREE if their models fail as fast as this one did for me  --and I and I guess hundreds of others who bought the lemon in dusguise.

  • How To use a wireless in Satellite L305-S5968

I just recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite L305-S5968 and I've never used or been able to set up a wireless PC.
How exactly can I use this PC to be wireless so I can login for free at the local library.
My wireless network card is this one: Realtek RTL8187B Wireless 802.11g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter.
I have the LAN working just fine but I'm afraid that the library does not have LAN plugins there.
What all do I need and what do I need to do to make this work.
I need step by step instructions on this please do not post vague answers.
I'm not a PC idiot, but I have never set this up before so this is new for me.
EDIT: Sorry I realize this may help...
I'm running Windows XP SP2 on here I believe.
I have my own disk i installed it with. I'll also be installing the wireless driver becasue apparently its missing as well.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Im a little bit confused about your posting. What you want to know exactly?
I mean you can WLAN instead of LAN without problems. Its the same just without cable. You have only to check the TCP/IP settings on your computer that is also depending on the router and type in the right password from the router Thats all!
Furthermore I have founded an interesting document:

    Hi
    >How can i make an restore disk
This should be mentioned in user manual which is always preinstalled.
In my case I used the preinstalled +Toshiba Recovery Medium Creator+ software.
This Toshiba software allows you to create either an recovery disk or an recovery flash memory stick.

  • Install Leopard on Tiger MBP using Restore Disk from Leopard MBP

As the title suggests, I just bought a new Leopard MBP which, of course, comes with the restore disks. I tried to install Leopard on my old MBP using those disks and it says "This software can not be installed on this machine."
I thought as long as it's the same machine (MBP) this would work?
I also tried installing using target disk (with FW), still the same message.

There are several different versions of restore disks, noted by the disk Version Number on the disks themselves. Only certain versions will work with certain machines. I have seen versions 1.0 through i believe 1.3 for MBP Leopard restore disks, so it is kind of luck of the draw. A straight Leopard will normally work on anything though. Also there is only licensing for 1 use of that particular copy of Leopard that comes with the purchase of your new MPB. Trying to install Leopard on both machines is illegal, breaks the EULA, and is considered software piracy. When/if you log online, your computer calls home to Apple to let them know what is going. If Apple would so choose, they can press charges resulting in at least a $250,000 fine and prison time. Just and FYI/cautionary piece of advice especially when asking those types of questions in an Apple owned forum.

  • How to restore disk on Satellite A300-1AL

Hi, I have Satellite A300-1AL with Windows Vista Home Premium
I've bought this laptop with no recovery disk. Currently C drive is messed up(failed to install windows XP), How can I restore system from a pre-installed system on a hidden partition?

Try holding down the Zero key when turning on the laptop.
On my laptop, I need to time it properly, like this:
    1) Hold 0 key
    2) Turn on laptop
    3) Release 0 key when the Toshiba logo appears
If the recovery partition is already gone, you can order a recovery disc from Toshiba

  • Toshiba Satellite L305-S5919

Good morning friends. I have this problem with my laptop, after logging-in to windows for about 5-15 minutes, my laptop suddenly goes blank. Sometimes the color is light blue or pure white. I tried to troubleshoot my laptop to know what is causing the problem so when I tried it in battery mode it works fine. however, when I started to plug the power adapter to charge my laptop the screen goes blank immediately or sometimes the laptop shuts down. another thing I did is to try too boot in safe mode with the power adapter on and everything works fine. my power adapter also have some bare wires coming out in DC side and it is already cut, I just bend the wires to keep it connected. I am asking for your kind help. Thanks you so much in advance. I believe that your solutions will be a great help for me.

I'd recommend replacing that adapter immediately.

  • L305-S5919 Locks Up

I've had my Toshiba L305-S5919 for about 5 months.
When I haven't done something on the computer within about 10-20 minutes, the computer locks up. The keyboard won't respond, so it won't accept alt-ctrl-del. At that point, I have to remove both power sources (plug in and battery) in order to reboot the computer. I can't even get it to respond by using the power button.
Even when I have a screensaver on or when I'm watching an internet video or listening to music, I still must do something with the computer myself (even if it's just minimizing or maximizing a program) in order to avoid this. I try to do it about every 10 minutes, but sometimes I forget. I then have to reboot everything.
Is there a fix for this? Thanks!

  • Vista will not boot/install after performing a restore to factory settings on satellite l305

I have a satellite l305 that i bought new thru walmart.com about a year & a half ago, and for the past few months it seems like there are more & more issues with this pc that are causing it not to work properly-everything from drivers failing-or even disappearing, in some cases-to  crashing into a blue screen everytime i insert a micro sd card into the slot.. My sound drivers are gone & even after i THOUGHT i downloaded them again, they still won't install or even recognize that they are there and then yesterday it suddenly stopped being able to fully load some of my fave games  that i play daily.. I have tried EVERY SINGLE SUGGESTION in EVERY  article, forum, help site, etc.,that i could find & even tried to get help over the phone from a pc tech here locally, and nothing has been able to fix my issues. I have done so many system restores from so many different restore points, installed updates, uninstalled updates, tried to install new drivers, rolled back drivers, started in safe mode to do diagnostics checks, entered BIOS & checked EVERY setting, reset all settings to default, checked error logs, etc., etc., etc...I have even completely disassembled my entire laptop & checked all wiring, fuses, etc., made sure everything was working, etc., So, finally yesterday I decided that it's gotta be something to do with a tech issue-probably with my vista home premium OS that came pre-installed at purchase, so i thought it best to just go ahead & go into the back up & restore & back up all my files onto an external hd using the file transfer wizard option inside the restore center, and then proceed into restoring the pc to it's factory, or "out of box", state. And i assumed i covered my bases by saving the back up-just in case...ohhh no-not the case at all!
It did't even occur tp me to that i might need an actual BOOT disk for vista after the fact. I just assumed that "out of box" meant just how it originally came-WITH vista pre-installed & ready to set up-like it did the day i bought it! i also was under the assumption that, isnce it never asked for a product key or anyting to activate vista then, that it wouldn't need one now either. But anyway, so this is where i'm at now-after i did the factory restore & turned it back on, it said to wait while windows finishes installing-but it never finished, then finally about an hour later, it said that windows was unexpectedly interrupted during installation & did not complete, and for me to restart pc to try install again. But after i did that, it was the same thing over & over. it NEVER installs!
So then i decided to go ahead & "restore windows using back up image" that i created on my external hd prior to  the factory restore, thinking that  it would just kinda pu **bleep** all back, but thats not working either. it recognizes the drive, and takes me to a menu where i can actually even view all the files on the drive and even tho they are known by my pc to be back up files, it still won't associate them to being back up files to MY PC!! I even got desperate enough to find a site that claimed to offer a free vista boot disk in the form of an iso image that i burned onto cd & tried to boot from as well. That actually took me to an install screen for windows & all the way to where it asks for product key-which DID NOT come locatedon any sticker anywhere on my laptop, and because they DID NOT include any OS utility, install, or boot disks with the purchase of my laptop, i don't know what the product key is OR where else i might be able to find that info, and i WILL NOT pay for ANOTHER ONE,  just because they were too lazy or cheap to send  the disks with the pc! so i tried to skip this step till later, but when i skip it, it shows anpther error saying that install was terminated & could not finish install & if i wish to continue, for me to restart my pc & re-attempt install..WHAT IS GOING NE WITH THIS AND WHAT CAN I POSSIBLY DO TO JUST BE ABLE TO USE MY LAPTOP AGAIN?? HELP ME PLEASE SOMEONE!!

    Hi,
I do not really understand... Did you made a backup before restore to factory settings? And did you copy all backup files to an external device? If not, the data is gone!
Why? Restoryng to factory does not mean a reinstallation. It means to fill the whole harddisk with an image of the first (factory) installation. All other data will be destroyd! Other partitions are deleted and normally you find only one big partition - the whole hdd.
If you have a complete backup on external drive and it is corrupted during restore, try to open the files manually. Maybe you can restore some single files.
    Good luck
    kind regards
    Stefan

  • Re: Satellite L300-18D - How can I get a Vista Restore disk?

    Hi everyone
My laptop (Satellite L300-18D) was seriously infected by viruses, everything corrupted. I need to resinstall Vista but don't have the restore disk. After searching around I managd to download a restore disk from some site, but when I used this disk, it gave me an error code which meant the product key was wrong. I used the product key from the bottom of the laptop (I trust this is an OEM). So I guess I need a restore disk that will work with my OEM product key.
How can I get this restore disk that will work with my OEM licence?
Also, I tried to install XP on my laptop, but it kept giving me a message saying it could not detect the hard disk, there is nothing wrong with the hard disk, I have tested it on another laptop. Is there any sort of barrier o installing XP on this laptop which came with Vista originally. Is there a security meassure somewhere that stoped me from installing XP?
    Thanks in advance

My macbook came with snow leopard, if  I upgrade to Lion will I be able to use my restore disks in the future and if I do use my disks that brings me back to snow leopard, Will itunes remember I purchased Lion or will I have to purchase a second time ?

At this point, you can no longer download Lion (10.7) from the App Store, only Mountain Lion (10.8) - make sure all your applications are fully compatible if you decide to upgrade.
Yes, you can restore 10.6 using your restore disc should you wish to - and the App Store (not ITunes) will have a record of all your purchases, since it's linked to your AppleId.

  • I might need to use a restore disk to revive an HP Pavilion dv6--6167cl.

My son did not create the restore disk when he got the machine and it (the laptop computer) make have been damaged when we suddenly lost electrical power in a windstorm.  I understand that he can get a restore disk by asking for one from HP, but I have a restore disk for a HP Pavilion Slimline s5650z.  Can I use my Pavilion restore disk to revive my son's laptop?  Would it hurt anything to try to do that?
Alternatively, any other way to revive the PC aside from using a restore disk?
    Thanks,

Sorry, but your Slimline recovery discs will not load on another computer. Please indicate what exactly the laptop is or isn't doing.

  • Using Apple Restore Disk

Ok the good news is that I have located my original disks that came with my G4. So I went and put the restore disk into the cd drive and it comes up on the screen. Now when I use disk first aid it tells me that I have a node 4 error adn that the hard drive cannot be mounted. I then tried to do a restore but all it gives as an option is the restore disk and the the hard drive. I am now at a new loss! I have a feeling that it is probably something easy and I don't want to pay someone to tell me this! Please any help I can get would be awesome!

    Hi, mprestonsoccer -
A node error indicates damage to the disk directory. This Alsoft support article addresses that -
    Alsoft - Node error
Such damage is usually not repairable by Disk First Aid. Alsoft's DiskWarrior should be able to repair that damage.
Note - the current versions of DiskWarrior, v. 3.x, boot only to OSX. If your machine is a G4 (AGP) or later model, there is a firmware update, v. 4.2.8, recommended in order to use OSX on the machine; a G4 (PCI) model does not need a firmware update. If your machine needs that update and it has not yet been done, then look on EBay or other places for a copy of Diskwarrior v. 2.x - those versions boot to OS 9.
You can also use Drive Setup to deep-wipe the drive, which should also repair the problem. However, this will erase the drive completely. If there's anything on the drive which you do not want to lose, and which has not been backed up someplace, then you may not want to do this.
    Using Drive Setup
A comment on using the Software Restore disk -
That CD can be dangerous to use. Its intended purpose is to revert the contents of the hard drive to the state it was in when originally shipped; this is accomplished by its installer using a disk image of the contents of the hard drive as it was when it left the factory. There is a way to use that disk to preserve the existing contents of the drive while also replacing all that was there originally, but it is very easy to accidentally delete the current contents of the drive.
A safer disk to use, one which has all the repair capability of the Restore disk, is to use the Software Install CD. This disk is intended to be used to install or replace just the operating system plus a few other standard utilities, and by default removes nothing. In addition, by user direction it can be used to make incremental replacements or installs of OS and other software groups. A retail OS 9 Install CD of appropriate version (all retail OS 9 Install CDs have a white label with a large gold 9) can also be used with equal safety.
