Using Router for wireless dial-up connection

Can anyone tell me if I can use a router to set up a wireless network when I only have a dial-up internet connection available?
I have a desktop computer that seems not to have a wireless network card, so I guess I have to have that first.  Then, do I use a Router or an Access Point?  I have read many posts on the subject that are quite old so don't know what to use.
Any suggestions as to which models to use would be very helpful.  I have no idea what I'm doing!

Then only way you can do this is to set up ICS (internet connection sharing) on the PC that is going to connect to the dail up and install a router or AP behind that from that PC's neywork card.  Then the other PC's can connect to the router/AP then to the gateway (PC running ICS).
However, your connection speed would still be very slow.  I would recomend just calling your local ISP and look into a broadband (DSL/Cable) connection and connect a router (wireless or wired) to the modem (DSL or Cable) your ISP gives you.  That would save the head ache would would get configuring ICS.  Here is a link to use as a reference on setting that up.

  • I have an IMAC that runs OS 10.6.7.  I use Netgear for wireless. My computer keeps losing the network, so I can't use wireless.

I have an IMAC that runs OX 10.6.7. I use NEtgear for wireless. I have a laptop and Ipod that I use on the wireless. Recently, my desktop computer shows that it is searching for the wireless system (on the router). I contacted Netgear. They talked me into buying another router and their technical contract. Nothing is working. I can plug my  5200 modem directly up to my desktop , and the  network is fine, but the wireless, of course, is not plugged in. When I go to connect the wireless, it doesn't work. This is not a computer program per se, nor is it a router program because sometimes it will work. It seems to me that the computer and router are not working together to hold the settings.
I have attempted to download the latest software for my computer, i.e., Imac graphics fireware. Each time I try, it says that the extensions are not valid for my computer.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks, Vicki

    Imac graphics fireware.
Did you mean to say firmware? You should only install firmware updates when offered to you via Software Update; other than that, whatever is offered is not appropriate for your model.
As for your Netgear router - I have a Netgear and set it up manually on their web interface setup site (the address should be in your manual). Did you call your ISP so they will recognize that there is a router involved? Sometimes my iMac also does not want to communicate with the router; however, my Macbook and printer have no problem. I solved the problem by connecting things this way:
cable from wall to modem > cable from modem to router > cable from router to iMac. The other things are wireless.

  • Can not connect All in one 209b to new router for wireless printing....

Have an HP laptop and All in one priner 209b.  All was working fine, wired and wireless printing.  Then we had to upgrade our ATT Uverse router.  Everything works...even wireless laptop and printer when connected to laptop.  However, can't get printer to printer wireless since it has the old router info.  I used the disk but when it asks to you to pick the printer, I choose the printer but it says printer now found ??? what ???? and this is with the cable connected.  I do not have the wizard on the touch screen but I did reset to factory settings hoping it would load new router info but it does not.  How do you manually enter router into for wireless printing.  Is it best to delete the printer and reinstall as new...wired and then wireless ???
I am about to call an outsite company and pay the outrageous charge as the help on HP is not working.  Thanks

  • Help setting up router for wireless printer

I recently purchased a wireless printer - but haven't been able to connect to the router. Router is a Linksys wireless G 2.4ghz w/ SecureEasySetup (SES).  When I activate the SES button on the router - it will connect with the printer - but the router then re sets itself, my SSID changes to the Linksys default and I loose internet connection.
How can I use SES without the router resetting?

I assume that your wireless printer does not have SES.
When you use SES, the router resets the wireless settings.  SES is designed to be used when both devices (router and wireless adapter) both have the SES feature.  If only one device has the SES feature, then you cannot use the SES button, and the non-SES device must be setup manually.
Login to your router at 192.168.1.1, and write down the following settings on a piece of paper:
    SSID
    encryption type   (probably WPA)
encryption key  (sometimes called Password or Passphrase)
Next, follow the installation procedure for your wireless printer.  At some point in the install procedure, it will ask you for the above info.
If you need more help, please state the model and version of your router.  Also, please state the make and model of your printer.

  • How to use AE for wireless printing with Ethernet Printer?

    Hi all,
I have been using my AE connected to a printer via USB for printing but have now replaced my printer with another model that only has Ethernet connections.
Can someone please explain how to set up the AE so that I can print? I can get so far but seem to be doing something wrong somewhere. Here's my setup:
Mix of Macs and PC's using Airport Time Capsule for wireless network. Currently setup as 'Create a Wireless Network'
1 x b/g Airport Express - now with Ethernet connection between AE and Printer. Currently connected as 'Join a Wireless Network'
Via 'Add Printer' I have selected 'Internet Printing Protocol - IPP' as the Protocol and added the IP address of the Airport Express '10.0.1.10' as the Address. This seems to connect OK but all I get is printer paused.
Any idea where I am going wrong please?
    Many thanks, Mike

    Sorry you are having difficulties.
Suggest that you first get the printer working with your AirPort Extreme in case the configuration on the Express may not be quite right.
I'm not familiar with the Epson products, but I do use an HP ethernet all-in-one device.
The basic "must do's" on the device include entering the printers MAC address and assigning a fixed IP address that the printer will always will receive using a DHCP Reservation on the AirPort Extreme. My all-in-one gets 10.0.1.25 It sounds like you may have done this.
After installing the printer software from the disc, you go into the Mac's System Preferencesj > Print and Fax and click the small + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list. The HP printer appeared immediately as an available printer, so click it to highlight it and then click Add at the lower right. It's been flawless since it was installed about 3 months ago.
You'll need to Add the device for each Mac computer on the network. I don't use PC's but imagine that Add Printer or Add New Device would be the way to go here.
Sometimes it helps to call the manufacturer and endure the hold for 15-20 minutes waiting for the manufacturer's tech support people.

  • Router for small business Internet connection

One of our clients recently switched ISPs to Speakeasy who installed a Hatteras HN 407 bridge. We have had Internet connectivity problems using their SonicWall 3060 firewall, and we experienced similar problems when attempting to use a newer Sonicwall TZ180. We temporarily installed a Linksys W54GT router, which has been working perfectly; however, we would like to have a more robust router for their 25 user network - additional security options, performance, VPN, two WAN connections, etc. Can you recommend a small business router with 2 WAN connections? This customer has a business ethernet 3Mbps (up and down) Internet connection, uses an online medical scheduling program, normally has 10 - 20 uses using the Internet connection and will be installing a backup DSL line that we would like to use for load balancing.

Our recommendation for Dual WAN would be RV082 This would be the prefect VPN router for small  Business and if you are looking for more ports on  the Ethernet, then we would recommend the RV016

  • Proper install for TC to U-verse 2wire to use airport for wireless in home.

I am using the U-verse 2 wire to connect to internet wireless, and ethernet, to Imac. Want to change to the TC for wireless in hopes it might be faster. How do I do that?

+Want to change to the TC for wireless in hopes it might be faster.+
If you are looking for a faster internet connection, your 2Wire is already much faster than your internet service, so adding an even faster TC will not provide any improvements as far as your internet connection is concerned.
If you are backing up to the TC using wireless, you will gain some improvement in this process.
You will need to connect the TC to the 2Wire gateway using an ethernet cable. Are you able to meet these requirements?
In addition, you'll need a second ethernet cable for configuration purposes, which will be disconnected after the TC is configured.
Post back when you are ready.

  • Using HH4 for Wireless

    Hey All,
I will be testing a DrayTek Vigor2860 for work this week.
Because it is not the 2860n it does not have wireless.
Is there anyway to use the DrayTek as Modem and cabled connections and get it connected to the HH4 for the wireless?
    Thanks in advance.

Hi, My name is Eric Moyers. I am a Network Support Engineer in the Cisco Small Business Support Center. Thank you for using the Cisco Community Post Forums.
It is my understanding that from your description you are wanting to use security mode WPA2-Personal but still want to access your radius server for  MAC Address connection control.
If I have a radius server already setup, why not use it for the security mode as well?
I have not personally set this exact scenario up, but unless the WAP is using the Radius for its security, instead of WPA2 - Personal, it will not be able to use it for the Connection Control. As a test if you configure it to use Radius and post the results?
    Thanks

I just downloaded Pocket Light Meter.  After I turn on the additional settings, I can see foot candles , however when I compare it to my actual light meter to check the validity of the Pocket Light Meter, they are way off.    Any idea how to calibrate it or to check if possibly I am doing something wrong??

  • Using Terminal with a dial-up connection to a Unix server

Normally I use a cable modem at home to connect to a Unix server at work. All I have to do is fire up the Terminal application, type "telnet servername.domainname.com", and I am up and running.
A couple days ago my cable modem service died and it is going to take a week to get it fixed. Wanting to find a temporary alternative connection, I remembered that my PowerMac G5 came equipped with an Apple internal modem. I connected the modem to a phone line, went to the Network configuration panel in System Preferences, and configured the modem to dial-up the Unix server at work. Using the Internet Connect application, the modem can connect to the Unix server, but that application attempts to make a PPP connection, not a plain old-fashioned command-line Unix connection.
What I really want to do is use the Terminal application to dial-up the Unix server. Does anybody know how to do that?
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

You need to know more about how the server at the other end is configured.
Internet Connect will only manage an internet connection, typically via PPP. If the server at the other end is not configured as a PPP server then you're not going to get anywhere with it.
If the server is set to use the modem as a standard serial interface then you'll need a terminal emulator that can manage the serial ports (terminal.app is not such an app).
Fortunately there are many options, including the venerable ZTerm. This will let you use the modem to dial a number and log in over a simple serial line.

  • I want to set up my mac book as a wireless router for other computers to connect on

I already used my macbook as a wireless router but these days when i try to set it up through the internet sharing column in system preferences the up arrow signal shows for a second does not show anymore making my wireless invisible to other pcs and the green icon to show internet sharing is up stays on . How do i go about this and sort this problem . My Mac OS X is 10.9.3 . Thanks

Hello Francinette Pestana. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Have you already checked with your Virgin ADSL ISP on, whether or not, they can provide you with an Ethernet modem or combination modem/router? This would be the most straightforward path to a solution.

  • Can Time Capsule be used just for backups -- without being connected to a wireless network?

I have a second-generation Time Capsule that I no longer need as a wireless router. However, I'd like it to wirelessly (and automatically) backup our family's iMac and MacBook Pro. Is that possible?

Thanks very much, Bob and LaPastenague,
I ended up replacing the wireless Netgear Router (which Time Warner installed last May) with my older (second-generation) Time Capsule -- and it works flawlessly.
I guess I was afraid that since it's a few years old that it wouldn't work -- or work as well, as the new Netgear wireless router.
In fact it works better - the range is much better. And the issue my new iMac had, of losing connection with the network (though the little wifi icon never indicated it had in fact dropped) has evaporated.
Thanks for the help! Just shows that Apple rocks in every way.

  • Best router for a macbook experiencing connection timeouts?

    Hi all,
I know macbook wireless connection issues have been discussed to death already, but I have a slightly different question and with Black Friday looming, I was hoping to get some input from those who may have had success with finding a new router. I apologize for the incoming wall of text, it's been a long, arduous journey.
My 2007ish Macbook ceased to be wireless over a year ago, at least at home.  I was on Snow Leopard at the time, and using the internet when it dropped suddenly but connected after a restart. It dropped several more times and each time would require more restarts. By the end of the day, it didn't see my router, nor the neighbors' forever unsecured linksys router (yet i've had to go to war defending our network from their 17 year old son) or any other nearby network. I'm no longer 100% certain, but I do believe there had recently been an update (wifi died around July 4th 2011 if anyone is an obssessive date keeper) In the next days I installed kismet and istumbler and took the macbook for a drive around the neighborhood, where it proceeded to detect all kinds of other networks that it had never seen before (like, ever because its out of range). At home, still nothing.
Over the next few months, I furiously googled for hours upon hours and tried everything I came across.  And I do mean everything, even things I consciously knew would not have any affect. I did a clean install of Lion but no change. It's been to the apple store three times, where of course it detected their network and connected with no hesitation and diagnostics showed it maintaining better signal strength than I can ever remember seeing at home. They gave me various suggestions, from the predictable 'replace wireless card' to the ludicrous 'send it off and have the antennae replaced' which would be $800 dollars because they would need to open the screen part.  Yeah..no.  At least they replaced my swelling battery and top case for free.  Anyway, thenceforth I remained chained to my desk by ethernet.
Fast forward to now.  Still chained to the desk, but more determined than ever to do something about it. About a month ago I gave it another go and eventually after a few adjustments it started to actually detect the router and I can click to connect, enter the password, but of course, connection timeout. So the network name sits there in the dropdown menu, but bars all greyed out. Very frustrating.
So as a last ditch effort, I have decided to try replacing our router, a Linksys WRTP54G that is infuriatingly locked to Vonage, which we no longer have. There's a motorola surfboard modem connected to the router, and a switch between the router and macbook. The switch isn't the problem, it wasn't even there when the problem started. I've also tried a WRT54G which didn't work either. The Macbook works fine on a university network, but I don't have access to any of the specifics about the network. It also connects to a plethora of other home networks and routers, some of which I do believe are b/g routers.
We're due for a more powerful, capable, and not-cursed-by-vonage router anyway as our devices have increased in number from 4 to nearly 13. I want one that can support NAS and if possible Open WRT.  I was also planning to move us behind a VPN very soon.  I know that's maybe getting a bit nitpicky, but I am definitely prepared to pay more if it means the Macbook is wireless and I can clear up the 20ft river of chords snaking not so subtly around our upstairs.
So the question is, has anyone had any luck fixing the problem by replacing the router?  Even if it doesn't have tons of features, any input on what kinds of routers seem to make Macbooks with this problem fall in line would be so helpful!!

Apple AirPort Extreme has served my mixed environment very well. You can buy a refurbished one from Apple and save some $.
