Using S-ATA and Radeon 9800SE?

Hi!
Have read a number of posts in this forum about the incompability between the Intel Serial-ATA controller and the Radeon series graphics card and was just wondering if there is someone out there who has come up with any real solution to the problem, other than running a Parallell-ATA disk instead? Had serious problems when trying to run 3D apps and games on my computer with an Maxtor 120GB S-ATA disk, and a Club 3D 9800SE graphics card, (instant system lockups with hard reset as the only solution), and tried all the usual stuff to get rid of the problem, (swithed PSU, upgraded the BIOS, upgraded all drivers etc.), w.o. any luck. (When I tried to install a GeForce 440MX card instead, all worket just fine). But when I switched to a P-ATA disk and installed the system on this disk instead, all problems went away! Is it MSI I should blame for installing a crappy S-ATA controller, or is it ATI who are having problems making a desent driver for their GPU? Regardless what, I would really apreciate if someone else with the same problem, and a solution, could make a post on this forum!

I have had no problems with the above mentioned combo.....  EXCEPT, when using ICH5R.  With the Promise it's worked well on most all machines except a Neo2-LS which required me to set the PCI LATENCY to 64 before it would work.  On the "few" (and I stress "few" as I do not claim to be any expert) ICH5R setups I've used, I had to set the latency as high as 128.
Apparently since by default ATI cards want to use 255 clocks LATENCY TIMER, the SATA was only asking for 32 CLOCKS.  The Radeon was hogging up all the bus bandwidth.  Setting it to 128 cured the problem.  Either that or the AGP wasn't able to hold onto the bus long enough to properly finish it's data transactions.  Either way...
This however contradicts the notion that I've been told "PCI LATENCY TIMER CAN ONLY BE CHANGED IN WINDOWS 2K/XP using a utility like Powerstrip."  However I'm thinking that this worked for me because by choosing a medium between 32 and 255 allowed the cards to balance out in XP, as 32 clocks allowed the SATA to take too much control over the PCI Bus, or the ATI to give up too much control.
Just my .02

  • Multi GPU use with Nvidia and Radeon Card combined possible?

I know it's unlikely but does CC support the combined use of Nvidia and AMD graphics cards, mercury engine, cuda / opencl / multi GPU feature wise?
There's a lack of performance currently; especially when color grading. So we're gonna have to upgrade our macpro.
    Current Setup:
    Mac OS X Lion
    3,33GHz 6-Core INTEL Xeon
    24GB 1333MHz DDR 3 RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 5870
    Nvidia Quadro 4000
    SSD Raid internal
    SATA HDDs external
What's a good / better setup especially for color grading in Premiere (might switch over to SpeedGrade CC soon)?
We're gonna replace the Radeon HD 5870. Should we buy replace it with a NVIDIA Quadro K 5000 or a Radeon 7950 Mac Edition?
    Thanks in advance!

Get the K5000 if you need 10bit color preview. If you dont get the 680GTX Mac edition.

  • K7N2 Delta-L - RADEON 9800SE AiW Power Up Problem

    SYSTEM:
    K7N2 Delta-L ( BIOS updated to w6570nms.560 - v5.6 )
    AMD 2600XP
    512MB Crucial RAM
    Adaptec SCSI 39160
    Sapphire Radeon 9800SE AiW
    Antec 480W True Power PSU
      +5V ( 0A - 38A )
      +12V ( 0.8A - 22A )
      +3.3V 0A - 30A )
    PROBLEM:
I've just got the Radeon card and installed it. Everything is connected fine inc. the extra power supply for the card. Now, when I switch on the PC, it only powers up for a split second and then everything shuts off. When I disconnect the extra power supply to the radeon card the PC boots up fine, except for a message from the card saying it needs power. Some other users on this forum had a similar problem.
So is this a problem with the K7N2 Delta-L board or with my Antec PSU ? Surely 480W and the above AMP output should be enough.
Anyone got a fix for this ?
    THX for any help
    P.S. I've also tried this card in an older PC ( ECS K7S6A - 1800XP - Qtec 550W ) and I didn't experience the problem above.

The Antec PSU is fine, I tried different plugs and it still didn't work.
The Qtec PSU is fine as well but not as quite as the Antec.
I think the Antec PSU doesn't work because of its overloading protection. The Radeon card probably sucks quite some power when the PC is switched on.
I've spend the last two days finding an answer to my problem, and other users experienced a similar thing.
Oh well, guess I have to live with the loud Qtec for a while and in the meantime try to get an answer from Antec.
    Thx

I have an old (first generation) iMac that I still use sometimes for the applications that are on it. I was using it yesterday and unfortunately had a power cut. I went to turn it on today, and nothing at all happens. It's as though no power is getting to it. I've checked the obvious things, changed the fuse, tried different cables, poked paperclips in reset holes, but nothing doing. I wonder if there is anyone who knows what might be wrong. I was hoping to get some of its content transferred soon, but I'm guessing that can't be done if it can't be started up. Many thanks, if you can help

    Hello,
    >It's as though no power is getting to it.
Would it be correct to assume that no sounds at all can be heard? Also, no lights, not even green or amber at the power button?
    >unfortunately had a power cut.
Was it possibly a power cut in connection with a thunderstorm? Any other evidence of higher than normal voltages (light bulbs, et cetera)? Has the line voltage been checked (measured with an appropriate voltmeter/multimeter)?
If necessary, it would be possible to remove the hard drive, and then connect it to an external IDE/ATA to USB adapter (example below). That way you could gain access to files on the hard disk from another computer.

  • CUCM mulitiple paging via ATA and third party paging system

We have several campuses in our school district that use an ATA connected to a third party paging system.  A couple of the Schools are merging...and they wanted to know if we could in some way "link" the two paging systems so that they only have to call one extension when they page.  We are currently using CUCM v 8.6.1
    Thanks,
    Greg

Yeah, that won't work, plenty of people had already tried that to simulate a paging system, you only get the connection to the device that answers the call.
The only possible way I can think of, assuming they're in the same physical area, is to actually fork the cable from the ATA to the paging system.
If not, they'll have to live with two DNs for paging.

  • URGENT!!! Can ATA and SCSI coexist?

    hello fellas!
my case is similar of the post "Can SCSI and ATA coexist?', but with some differences:
    I own a G4 Dual 500–MHz PowerPC G4, 40Gb ATA + 80GB ATA. (http://support.apple.com/specs/powermac/PowerMac_G4_GigabitEthernet.html)
now I've installed a PCI SCSI card to connect tree more SCSI HDs: two barracuda 18Gb and one quantum 36Gb)
my G4 only reads SCSI drives when I disconnect ATA tape from motherbard...
when I plug ATA to motherboard again, neither SCSI mount on desktop, nor system profile shows it as a device, even when I start Hard Drive Update 1.app...
I've read all manuals from apple, jumped all SCSI HDs, but for some reason, it doesn't work at all!
so, the question, again, is Can ATA and SCSI coexist?
does anyone knows how to config it??
    thanks in advance!

    answering:
    - as my primary language is portuguese, i didn't understand when you said 'booting off the OS X disk'. do you mean eject it in the disk utility?
    - I have so many drives because e sold another G4 that used those drives atached with the pci card and I simply want to use it, because I'm short on cash... those drives are installed with OS 9.2 (the ATA ones are running OS 10.4.8)
when you said one ATA and 2 SCSI, you mean that if I simply disconnect the slave ATA and one of the SCSI it may works?
    thanks again!

  • Lenovo G510, the Intel HD Graphics 4600 and Radeon 8750M, will not work!

    Good evening,
    I have a Lenovo G510, 59401564, i7 with Intel HD Graphics 4600 and Radeon 8750M graphics card.
I have problems with graphics cards to get it to work permanently!
The installation of the graphics card driver works fine but after about 30 minutes an hour, crashes the laptop and a bright blue screen is shown "VIDEO_DXGKRNL_FATAL_ERROR".
After a restart, the Graffikarten are disabled, a small window says that the driver must be reinstalled.
I have the Windows 8.1 64-bit, drivers from the Lenovo website uses. To reinstall, I used Catalyst_13.12_WHQL_UnifL_R3.01.exe.
I've been trying to determine two days why.
I really need help, I think more users have the same problem.
I am grateful for any help!

    hi angefragt,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Did you just got the unit or You got it some time around?
If you were able to use the comuter before you might need to push a system restore to a date when the crashes did not appear. Adn start a Windows Update.
According to this, It may be a conflict, Driver or OS issue,

  • Is my HDD an ATA and is on ATA bus 0 ???

My powerbook is 1,67 GHZ and 80 Go and won't boot , the optical drive is broken , so i use target disk mode to reinstall it . But it shut down when i press the "T" button to enter TDM. And if i don't  press "T"
According to Apple ,I must be sure that my hard driver is an ata and on ATA bus 0 because  "it's normal for a computer to shut down while entering in Target Mode if it hasn't detect any ATA hard drive on a ATA Bus 0
What is ATA Bus 0, the only thing i know is that my Hard is an ATA/IDE
What to do for solve this problem ???

There is another reason you may not be able to enter target disk mode, which is if you have a firmware password on your system. See this Apple note: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1352
My 1.67Ghz Powerbook has the internal hard drive as defined By Apple, ie, there's no option to change the ATA bus designation, and it can enter target disk mode.

  • I need a wireless option for older Mac desktop is there a good card or adapter  I want to transfer hd video files over the internet.  using a hotspot and wireless card in computer, any recommendations

Is there a good card I can put in the computer, and use with a hotspot?  Any experience with uploading HD video files this way.  DSL hard wired connection is too slow

As for the people on eBay, my only beef with them is that it has turned into a money hungry store instead of an auction place to pick things up inexpensively, like it used to be.
    Agreed.
There is one, in particular, who really puts a dear price on his flashed cards.
Not a friend to the Mac community.
Of course, others see his prices, and say "Well, if he can, then so can I".....
By the way, I have been noticing the same cards, only for PC for around $30-$40, which lead me to believe that those are the ones they are "flashing". Sorry if that's incorrect.
    It's OK.
I watch for the prime cards all the time.
Radeon 9800 Pro and XT PC cards have increased to the $50-$70 range.
Pros used to be $20-$30, XTs $30-$60.
Some guys here in Japan are trying to get $100 for Radeon 9800 Pro cards- vanilla PC versions.
The glut in Mac options has inflated the flashable PC card market dramatically.....
The Mac Edition Pro retailed for $200+.
$100 isn't bad for that card flashed to Mac... the XT gets $20-$50 more.
Try telling a PC guy that a Radeon 9800 is a $100 card..... the old boys laugh!
Adding to this is the recent influx of "new" Mac users, PC modders/users buying cheap, used G4's, and the demand for upgrades has increased as supply decreased.
If you see any rev 5.70 Geforce 7800 GS AGP cards, or any FireGl (Radeon) X800XT (unflashed) cards for less than $130, amazing is all that I have to say.
$30-$40, and I'll take 20 of each- cash!
Hmm, same goes for Geforce 6800 Ultra's......
I am just a little (or a lot) frustrated with Apple and Apple vendors lately. For obvious and not so obvious reasons. Please accept my apologies as I go through this phase.
We all have our days, and our reasons. At least, I know I do......
    Apology warmly accepted!
Count me as frustrated, as well.
The new machines sure look nice, but when I tally up the price of the software that I own, which can't be run on Intel or 10.6x Macs, my room full of G4's look a lot nicer.

  • Radeon 9800SE

At first i though i made a mistake with buing SE version which is like 9600XT, but then i found a cool softmood which opens additional piplines in that vidio http://www.ocfaq.com/softmod/.  After openning piplines (to 8 pipes) i received score of 28,619 with AquaMark3 and with overclocking it's VPU to 387 from 270 i get 31,734 now.  Will install cooling on my Memory and see how overclocking will go with it. What are your scores for 9800?
    My System: - MSI KT6V-LSR (onboard Audio & LAN) - Athlon XP 2600+ - Dual Chanel DDR 512MB - ATI Radeon 9800SE - SATA Maxtor 160 GB - IDE Generic 80 GB - Ahanix SilenX 400W (3.3V - 28A, 5.0V - 40A, 12V - 18A) - Toshiba DVD-Rom 16x - Mitsumi Floppy - Nexus 4 fan controller -

    are you insulting my 9600XT
its still a 9800 core after all, my brother overclocked his 5900XT, and it outperform the 5900 Ultra.

  • Difference between ULTRA ATA and SERIAL ATA

    Hello,
What is the difference between ULTRA ATA and SERIAL ATA ?? Is the connector different for each type ?? Thanks in advance.
    Robert Lespérance

Was wondering why you are considering a ATA drive? The iMac G5 als has a serial ata drive already.
If you are considering an external drive, then you have a problem. The most important thing there is that you get a drive with firewire interface because I think they are the fastest, but USB is an ok choice. If there is an external firewire drive that also uses a serial ATA drive inside of it, then that would be an excellent choice for speed. USB or Firewire are standards for connecting a peripherial to you Mac. An external drive will probably have a very common, read Mactor, WD, Seagate, ATA drive in it. The external drive case has a interface inside of it which allows USB or Firewire to speak with the ATA drive, any flavor. Some people just purchase a powered external 3 1/2 case and install the hd they like the best, that is the nice thing about standards.
I think serial ATA will pretty much spell the end of all of the older ATA drives. The serial drives are actually very competitive in price now and faster.
Suggest you go to Western Digital, Maxtor, and/or Seagate's web sites to learn what drives they offer.

  • Neo4 Dual Drive ATA and IDE boot from ATA?

I just set up a Neo4 board using two drives.  A seagate 120Gg ATA drive and a Maxtor 200Gb IDE drive.  I would like to use the ATA drive as the boot drive but I can only seem to startup from the IDE drive.  Is there a trick to get this working?

Quote from: Richard on 28-September-05, 01:07:15
ATA and IDE are the same thing.
Huh.  Well.  Okay, perhaps I'm not posing the question properly.  The seagate drive is plugged into the SATA1 position, while the Maxtor is plugged into IDE1.  They use different cables and connectors which is where my confusion started I guess.  In the BIOS when I select the seagate drive to boot from it will not boot.  But it does off the Maxtor.  I have no reason to believe the drive is bad but hwo knows.  I guess I just want to make sure I'm not missing some setting to properly boot from the SATA1 position when both drives are attached.

  • K7N2 AND radeon 9500 : NO post!!

    Hallo @ all!
    I have a big problem.
i read some similar issues all over the forum with the K7n2 and radeon 9500/9700 and Kingston RAM.
    Well, i have 2x 256 MB 333 cl 2.5 kingston ram.
when i use the radeon 9500 non pro 128 MB, the fan just moves a short time and the system is off and can only be put on after PSU switched off.
So I cant switch on my SYSTEM ! (
    PSU enermax 365 (3.3V 32A    5V 32A )
the graphics card works, tested on ECS K7S5a AND MSI KT400!
    with SAME PSU.
AGP is OK tested with GF 2 mx.
but not the combination 9500 AND K7N2.
    im so sad!
i have to run the syst with a VODDO BANSHEE :-(
the system is ok, if i remove the 4 pol aux power plug from the graphics card, BUT: then the graph card hinders system from booting. (intentionally , its made by sapphire)
If sombody has a solution or a tipp PLZ PLZ PLZ help.
    Greetings, JENS.

    Hello!
I found a "solution". although u cant call it so... .
Well, 1st i tried an enermax 465 watts, but of course, the problem is the same.
the fans just moves 1 sec and then u cant do another till u switch PSU off/on.
its no RAM problem, because system ran fine with voodoo banshee PCI.
    so i tried sth. "brave" :-D .
but what should happen bad, if the Graphics card is layed out for the 12V ???
I removed the 12v Power plug, booted the system till the Warning: plug in 12V aux power in ur radeon 9700....
(i posted before, that system starts till this point when power plug (12V) is removed).
And then I plugged in and hit the RESET button:
    See, system booted well *sheesh*.
But, its no solution due to its necessary any start....
So, would U built in a delayed switch, which overtakes this work, or would u send in the Mainboard?
    Greetings, Jens.
What a curies thing a PC is...

  • K9N2 Diamond and Radeon HD 4890 Crossfire

Hey guys.  Just your general noob question here.  My mobo is a K9N2 Diamond SLI.  It has support for 3-way SLI and as far as I can tell, the Nvida based chipsets don't support Radeon XFire.  I was just wondering, though, does the board support the use of, say, a Radeon HD 4870x2 card?  I was hoping maybe it would since it's one card with 2 onboard GPUs, but just wanted to make sure it does.  I'm using an Nvidia GPU right now, but I've always like the ATIs better.

OK, this is back to what Bas said.  He informed me that Crossfire works on any board. I've installed two 4890s on my K9N2 Diamond and connected the appropriate power connectors and crossfire ribbons.  When my computer loads up, it sees both cards, but it does not recognize it as crossfire.  Neither does CCC.  Is it possible that the K9N2 won't run Crossfire setups (I mean, it is an SLI board and not AMD).
