Using S/PDIF out

Hi
I want to utilize my digital out on my G5 for a set of audio monitors, and possibly other devices. How do I use the S/PDIF on the G5 with either an RCA-type S/PDIF jack or a pro XLR AES/EBU jack? I would imagine a simple cable, but can't seem to find one.
thanks,
bret

Would something like this be needed? http://www.hosatech.com/hosa/products/odl-312.html
Am I correct in seeing that a cable with a toslink connection on one end cannot be simply terminated with an RCA on the other end? That would be the ideal situation.
thanks.

  • S/PDIF out produces static when playing audio, sometimes with video

This is my first install of Arch Linux, and I am a bit of a noob. I started using Arch because I wanted to learn, and it's been absolutely perfect--I actually love it so far, and this is the first major problem I've had. Most of the Arch documentation has been exceptional, however I've been working at this all afternoon and haven't come up with a solution. SO, here goes nothing:
My motherboard has a few analog, S/PDIF optical and coaxial, and HDMI audio outputs as native (although HDMI runs through an onboard Radeon 6xx family card). I use S/PDIF because my receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs.
    The specifics:
In gnome-alsamixer, I have three tabs: USB Mixer, ATI R6xx HDMI, and Realtek ALC887-VD. The first tab has one PCM volume control, the ATI tab has nothing but a IEC958 checkbox at the bottom, and the Realtek tab has everything from master to input to surround sound settings.
In the console alsamixer, going to Select sound card has three options: 0 USB Audio CODEC, 1 HD-Audio Generic, and 2 HDA ATI SB. These correspond to the same three tabs above in the GUI. Selecting 1 shows an SPDIF output with no way to change the volume, only to mute or un-mute. WTF!
In GNOME sound settings, Output tab, I have for output selected Built-in Audio Digital Stereo (IEC958) with Connector: Digital Output (S/PDIF) selected at the bottom. In the Hardware tab I've selected Built-in Audio (1 Output, Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output). For some reason this program seems to prefer the first Built-In Audio option, which has two settings: Off, and HDMI audio. I do NOT want to use HDMI audio. It is currently turned off.

edit: skipping around on VLC while playing movies can produce some normal audio after a few seconds of static, however audio files have proven uesless. VLC is the only program that will play them so far and they've all been static.

  • Can I use the HDMI out on a HP ALL IN ONE TOUCHSCREEN Desktop to connect a second monitor with HDMI

Can I use the HDMI out on a HP ALL IN ONE TOUCHSCREEN Desktop to connect a second monitor with HDMI  in without any additional  software or graphics adaptor.  I have a 520-1070
HP - 23" Touch-Screen TouchSmart All-In-One Computer - 8GB Memory - 2TB Hard Drive ? I used a HDMI to HDMI cable and the monitor was not  recognized.

Here are the specs for your HP TouchSmart 520-1070 Desktop Computer. As previously stated your computer Doesn't have a HDMI output, instead it has a HDMI input. This is designed to let you connect a game console, a DVD/Bluray player, etc. to use as a monitor.
If you wish to conect a second monitor to your computer, you will need to use a USB-to-video adapter such as the EVGA UV Plus+ UV39 or EVGA UV Plus+ UV19. Using an adapter like these with the touch feature of your computer may cause issues with pointer control and you may need to disable the touch feature to use "extended desktop".

  • Recording using s/pdif

Can anyone advise me on using s/pdif please - I'm using a Presonus Firebox and setting the clock on the Firebox to 's/pdif' but when I try to record in LE I get the 'Error while trying to sync audio and MIDI' message - I can't see anything in LE to slave to the s/pdif clock (there only seem to be options for MIDI Clock/MTC?)

    Hi,
You need to hook up something to the SPDIF input and output of the Firebox. SPDIF stands for "Sony Philips Digital Interchange Format."
So you need a digital device to record from, which has this as an output option.
Then you can slave the Firebox to the incoming SPDIF signal, and you should be ok.
Logic does not take care of the Firebox's synch... that is done via the Firebox itself.
    Cheers

  • IPod appears on Desktop - enable disk use checked, greyed-out

Each of my daughters has a video iPod--
The "white" one - about 11 months old, now appears on the desktop when connected. iTunes opens, but the choice "enable disk use" is greyed-out, i.e. I cannot un-check this, and each time the iPod icon appears on the desktop.
The "black" iPod-- just a few days old, but essentially the same video iPod-- it does NOT appear on the desktop, and the "enable disk use" writing is NOT greyed-out, i.e. we could "check" this if we wanted.
How to get the "white" iPod to no longer appear on the desktop? I have tried resetting it, but that doesn't seem to change anything.
Also-- is there a reason why this appears on the desktop, and is that a limiting factor for any reason-- or a problem? Really just trying to understand this!
    Thanks for any comments.

If the iPod is set to sync manually, the enable disk use checkbox will always be on, as iTunes doesn't know when you will be done transferring content to the iPod and ready to unplug it. The iPod will appear on a Mac's desktop while iTunes is syncing it or waiting for you to transfer content to it, or when disk use is explicitly enabled and the iPod is plugged in to the computer.

  • Does anyone know why there would be slight latency using a digital out (Toslink w/adaptor) to my amp, where I don't have latency with an analogue cable? Is it the amp that is causing the latency?

Recenty used a Macbook Pro with analogue out to my amp and there was no latency at all. Bought a new iMac and got a Toslink cable with adaptor and connected to same amp. There is slight latency using the digital out! Can anyone explain why? I don't really want to go back to using the digital cable because I have the surround sound setup that works well with the optical cable.

  • Use of optical out on new macmini dual core

I bought a new ~Belkin optical cable. It fits perfectly in my macmini and my bose 321 system. This 321 system has an optical entry. But ....
the description by the mac how to get the mac to use the optical out is not told. It is told to select optical out in the configuration screen under sound. I don't have this option! Ithought the updat of the minimac would have solved the problem, but it didn't. Please help me! I want to use this optical cable, so that I can use the bose system in combination with the minimac!
    Kind regards David Rietveld

With the exception, as noted of the DVD player, it's System Preferences>Sound>Output. Make sure you used the mini-toslink/optical adapter and that the cable is securely snapped into an INPUT port on your bose system. Everything will be (as noted) auto-detected, and you should see the option:
Digital Out Built - In Output
Select it. If you have multiple adapters for sound (ex a usb audio adapter), then you might want to select the digital output for use only w/ dvd player. Choose where you want your system sound and alerts sent in the other tabs of Sound.
On your bose unit you may have both analog and digital inputs for the same source. I'm not questioning your competence, more my knowledge the equipment you are utilizing. Make sure you select OPTICAL as the input for that source.
    For example,
You have buttons for Video 1, Video 2, and DVD. On the back you have a coax digital, a couple of toslink/optical digital connectors and a bunch of RCAs. If you hook up ALL the wires from each device then press Video 1; it MAY just use the analog connections...and since you're ONLY sending digital you won't hear a thing.
If you have 'auto-detect' for analog or digital it probably prioritizes digital over analog and will merely work IF SELECTED. Some systems may do the reverse.
    Good Luck,

  • Why can't I p.t.v. using 'in to out' in FCE 3.0?

I am trying to print to video using 'in to out' from the pop up window/dialogue box, but it just stalls after printing five seconds of lead-in. Print to video is working fine when I choose 'entire media' from the pop up window. Why won't FCE print to video using 'in to out' points in my timeline?

Thanks, I think I answered my own question. (I had to change my 'Easy Setup' settings to NTSC DV in order to 'output' my video because output was set to none, under Custom setup), but I had set my in and out points on my timeline prior to the new settings change (in my 'easy setup'). Those in and out pts were locked in to my older settings apparently, even though I moved them around afterwards. After deleting those in/out points in my timeline, and then making new ones, I can now ptv using 'in to out' option.

  • Why LabVIEW crashes when I'm trying to use "in" and "out" in my DLL?

Calling function from DLL using Call Library Function.
    Function source:
extern "C" __declspec(dllexport) long ReadPort(long base, long off)
    unsigned char c;
    long d;
    __asm
    push eax
    push dx
    push ax
    mov eax, base
    add eax, off
    mov dx, ax
    in al, dx
    mov c, al
    pop ax
    pop dx
    pop eax
    d = c;
    return d;
Using LabVIEW 5.0 and MSVC 6
    OS: Win2k

Windowd 2000, and most of the more modern MS OSes do not allow direct
access to HW. That means that applications do not have permission to
call in and out instructions. Those instructions are protected and any
app calling them will be terminated because it did something illegal.
To get direct I/O to work, you should look for the driver on the NI web
site that will redirect it for you.

  • Accessing BAPI's using JAVA with out using webdynpro URGENT

    hi Experts,
What is the procedure for calling RFC/BAPI's using JAVA with out using the webdynpro. Please let me know what are the possibilities with step by step implementation.

    Vijay

    Hi Boris Rubarth,
    Thaks for relavant information.
I have kind of the requirement. The clinet is asking for connecting the SAP RFC using java application. The build Jar or .war or .Ear for which are going to develop should be compatible for running on any of the Applications server like they have Tom cat, weblogic, websphere server.
so the .jar for or .ear file which we are going to develop should be able to run accessing the RFC/ BAPIs from any of these servers other than SAP WAS that is what their target.
Please give me your suggestion, which is better approach. currently their SAP system is 4.6c . So presently it is not possible the webservice approach. But they have plans to go for upgrade to ECC6.0
In that case only JCO option is possible. If use this option . Is it possible to access application which is deployed irrespective of the WAS by doing the required configuration.
Basically i am aware of the ABAP webservice work bech steps and also the JAVA coding also.
Please suggest me what is the better way to achieve this.
