Using same Aperture 3 library with different user accounts. Suggestions?

My wife and I share the same iMac but use different user accounts. Currently, I have our photos and Aperture library on a second partition with no ownership, allowing us both to access the library and edit, reorganize, etc (I know we need to be careful not to make changes "simultaneously," so we simply shut one instance down before switching user accounts). The trick is quickly becoming the organizational scheme. My wife thinks (and I agree) that Aperture will be able to free us from having to "give in" to the other's way of thinking when it comes to grouping pictures in projects, etc. The only trick is, we can't figure out how to do it. My initial thought is to figure if one photo can exist in two different projects and then just have "hers" and "his" folders. The other thought would be to create two different libraries, but then I'm not sure how we would keep the two libraries "current" if one uploaded photos and didn't tell the other.
So, those are my two thoughts, but I'm sure there are others. I'm open to any and all suggestions.

1 Quit iTunes.
2 Drag your entire *iTunes folder* from /Username/Music to /Users/Shared.
3 Log out.
1 Log in on your other account(s).
2 Start iTunes and immediately press an hold the Option key.
3 iTunes will ask to *Create new library* or *Choose existing library*. Select *Choose existing library*.
4 Select the *iTunes library file* in the *iTunes folder* in /Users/Shared.
5 Now go to File -> *Add to library* and select the *iTunes music folder* located in /Username/Music.
6 - iTunes will add all the music in from this account to the main iTunes music folder/library.
7 Delete the *iTunes folder* in /Username/Music
8 Restart iTunes normally (don't hold Option). Everything should be there.
9 Quit iTunes and log out of the account.
10 Do the above steps for all users. Don't do the first 1-3 steps. Start at the second series.
Log into your account, start iTunes normally and all music should be there.
Whenever any of you do anything in iTunes, it will be seen by all since you are using one and the same iTunes library file.
Create a "main" playlist for each user with their own music. Create a smart playlist and set it to Playlist is not the playlist you created above. Select this and it will show you everything NOT in your playlist. Do the same for the others. This will help when adding only the music you want your own playlist.
Note that iTunes can only be opened by one user at a time. If you have Fast user switching enabled, the other users must quit iTunes in order for anyone else to use it.

  • Using same Aperture library with different machines

    Hi
I travel between locations some 7hrs apart and want to take my Aperture Libary and Vault with me to add to and work on in each location.
I have a Mac Pro at one location and MBP and 2011 Mac Mini (pre thunderbolt) at the other running Aperture v3.1.3 and Snow Leopard 10.6.8
I have my Aperture Libary, Vault and Referenced files  etc on a seperate/external drive/s to my OS and applications.
Having to reconstruct the libary from a vault each time I change locations is time consuming as I am working with a growing Libary at the moment 720GB + 500 GB of referenced files on a second HDD
I would just like to be able to set it up so I can just plug the Aperture library and Referenced files in launch Aperture and start working
Is anyone doing this? or has any ideas ?
    Many thanks in anticipation

    A few points to consider:
To make a vault into a normal library you use the restore function in Aperture.
Having the vault and live library on the same spindle is not a good idea as you realize, if one goes they both go, so you need to get the vault onto a separate drive ASAP. Also as the masters are referenced you need to make provision to get those backed-up as well. And remember as they are referenced backing up the library (either by vaulting it or copying it) will not back up the masters in this case.
Given that you are physically moving the drive between locations getting everything backed-up is even more important.  Also remember if the environments you are moving the drive between are extreme (moving from cold to warm in either direction) give the drive time to acclimate before spinning it up. And after you have spun it up give it some time before actually writing to it.
The question of using a vault over simply copying the library is asked a lot. There are pros and cons to each.
On the plus side. If you have a managed library the masters are backed-up with the vault and as libraries with masters in them tend be large the fact that the vault operation only write the changes after the initial vault operation makes for quicker back-ups. Copying a full library with referenced masters can't be a long process.
If the library has referenced masters in it the advantages of the vault aren't as great. You still need to back-up the masters seperatly and as the library tends to remain smaller copying it isn't as big a deal.
One other thing to keep in mind about vaults. You can't get just a single image or project out of it. It needs to be restored before you can open it with Aperture. So you will need the disk space to do the restore. With a copy you can just access it with Aperture.
    Hope this helps,
    regards

  • Is it possible to share an aperture library with different users using osx server.

is it possible to share an aperture library with different users using osx server.

Not really.  You should not be sharing an Aperture library over a network.  It's not designed for that and you'll likely corrupt your library at some point.

  • Using one music library with multiple user accounts

I want to use one Music Library and be able to have all my computer user accounts be able to access it. Article 93195 does not work for some reason. It is easy to share music over a network but not on the same computer? This can't be. I have talked to several Apple "Geniuses" and they all scratch their head. One guy could do it in Leopard, but not in Tiger. Could it have something to do with the permissions of the Itunes Music Folder? Any help would be appreciated. This is driving me crazy.

  • Can't sync Aperture library with multiple user accounts

I have created the aperture library on my main computer account and have synced photos to my iPhone with no problem. I created an account for my wife on the computer and she has admin rights. When I try to sync photos from Aperture onto her iPad I get the error message: You do not have enough rights for this operation. I checked the permissions on the Aperture library and she has Read+Write rights. Is there a solution so that we both can use Aperture for the management of our photo library but still have separate accounts?

yes, as best as I could tell.
This is a library I use for my desktop wallpaper (rotating 5 seconds apiece, random pics) so the images are kept in a folder separate from the library, which is one of the few that I permit to copy images and manage their location.
So I deleted those four images from the library, deleted their album, and reimported them from the main folder, and recreated their album, and all was well.
I presume one of them got corrupted, but the odd thing was that iTunes complained the phone couldn't be synced, and in no way indicated a fault with a file being synced.

  • Sharing one library with two user accounts.

I want to share one iTunes library with two user accounts on the same iMac.
I've followed the tutorial where you move the iTunes Music folder to a shared location HD/Shared/iTunes and then pointed both iTunes to that location via the advanced menu, but only the admin account has the music. The other user account iTunes shows nothing.
Also, I've now moved the music folder back to my area on the HD (not shared any more) and now the iTunes music folder shows all the album folders where before I guess they were hidden. Why and how do I get it back to how it was...?
All we're trying to do is share one mac. My wife and I have our own log in user accounts, but want to have the same music and iPhotos accessible on our own set-ups.
    Thanks for any help.

Out of interest I got this to work.
I made a folder called 'All Music' and put all the album folders in it.
Moved this folder to User/Shared/ and then clicked on the file, and Get Info.
In Get Info added my wife to Sharing & Permissions as Read & Write.
In iTunes / Advanced found the folder on my user account, and then did the same on my wife's account and hit add to library.
I hope this was the right way to do it..... It seems to have worked.

  • Sharing itunes with different user accounts

I just got Windows Vista. I have the latest version of Itunes. I'm trying to set it up so that my wife and I can share songs with different user accounts in Windows. I followed all the instructions. I moved the iTunes music folder to a public folder. But everytime I log off my account and return, itunes can't find the song files. Any suggestions?

They can be transferred to another iTunes library but not another iTunes account.
    Just copy them.

  • How to Use Same Asset Number with Different Sub-number

    Hi
We want to sell some assets and buy them back on lease. We want to use same Asset number with different sub-number under the same company code. This new asset will be under different Depreciation Area (Statistical).
We use external numbes for assets . And same asset number range is used by all compnay codes.
Please suggest whether this is possible & how.
    With Regards,
    Nitin

    Hi,
Go to field status for asset master data section and change the field status to optional for field Deactivation date, then follow the below steps.
You can create an sub asset number to an asset, which is already deactivated by retirement as like normal sub asset creation with AS11.(While creating sub number, you need to remove cap date and deactivate dcate field manually from asset master)
With this you can get new asset number as same as your old retired asset main number and but sub number will be different.
To post to diff dep area, other than 01, then you first create an acq transaction type, which will post only to specific areas and then use the new asset number in ABSO to post acq with your custom TTY.
I have tested and found working well in my system............Try now in your test client
    Thanks,
    Srinu

  • Help using file sharing with different users accounts on same Macbook

Hi, I just wanted a little help using the file sharing option. My wife and I had different users accounts on the same MacBook, but when I am trying to share my baby's picture from my documents folder for my wife to have the same picture, I can't find the way to do that; I am not been able to find my pictures on my wife's account. Is there any way that I could share a folder from my account and my wife to have the same files at the same time on her account?
I mean, something like the smart play list on the itunes?
    Thank you

You can't do that directly unless you change permissions on your whole Documents folder which is not a good idea. Your wife can see your Documents folder from her account by going to Users/yourusername/Documents. However, this folder has no read privileges for others except yourself by default so she won't be able to open it.
rather than changing permissions on your Documents folder, you can place the pictures you want to share in Public folder in your home directory or in Users/Shared folder.

  • Aperture 3 - share library with another user account?

    Hi,
I'm trying to share the aperture library with my wife (another user account on the same computer).
I started to give her permissions to the file in <My User>/Pictures/Aperture Library. but it kept having permissions issues. So i changed the library to /Users/Shared and gave both of our users full read write permissions... but i keep having the same permissions error.
I know that we can't both access the lib at the same time but even though, accessing the same library would be a major breakthrough for us.
    What am i doing wrong??
    Please help

This is what I did, and I did not get permission errors.
    1. Use Aperture 3.02 to create a new aperture library in the Shared Folder. I called it *Aperture Share.aplibrary*.
    2. I added a few pictures just for fun.
    3. Quit Aperture.
    4. Go to the Finder and set File Privileges to Everyone Read/Write on the *Aperture Share.aplibrary* file.
    5. Using Fast User Switching, switch to another user.
    6. Open Aperture 3.02.
    7. Switch to Library... >>Other/New...>>Other Library...>> . Navigate and select the *Aperture Share.aplibrary*.
That worked for me without permission problems.
Another question. Are all your pictures stored in an Aperture Library? If you have any pictures that are just referenced in the Aperture Library, this would most likely lead to permission errors.

  • 2 iphones 1 computer. updated my wifes phone to ios 5 her phone got wiped of all apps and all my contacts are on her phone. we had been using the same apple id but different user accounts on our laptop. How do i get her phone back to normal?

2 iphone 4, 1 computer. i upgraded to ios 5 and just updated my wifes phone as well. her phone got wiped of all apps and all my contacts were put on her phone. we had been using the same apple id but different user acct on our laptop. How do i get her phone back to normal??

Have your wife log in to her user account on the laptop. Launch iTunes, then connect her phone to the computer with the USB cable. Sync. That should put back all apps and media. Since you already upgraded her to iOS 5 she'll have to manually enter all her settings and preferences, and organize her home screens.

  • Share music on same mac with different user accounts

I'll try to make this clear, i have an imac with a large itunes collection. my two kids have accounts on that same mac, and want to be able to listen to what i have in my itunes. i can't see putting three copies of the same music on the same computer. is there a way to let them play what i have in my itunes account while they are logged in to their own account on the same computer?
imac (5 years old)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   macbook, G4 I book, I book, Imac
    macbook w/ superdrive, G4 with combo drive, I-book w/o cd burner   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   macbook, G4 I book, I book, Imac

Jase, you said "Music sharing works across different user accounts, whether they are on the same computer or different computers", but my son will log into his account where he currently has no music. in the window on the left, we can see the other computers in the house that are on line, but there is no sign of the master account (on that same imac). i assume this is because the master account is not logged in, therefore the secondary accounts can't find the master account's music, nor can I from a remote computer ( my macbook, for example). for instance, right now from my macbook i can see my son's itunes list (on the imac) in my "share window" (even though his list is empty). he can also see my macbooks list in his "share window". he cannot see either my list on that imac, or his sisters list on that same imac. all acounts on the imac have sharing turned on, as well as "look for shared music" turned on.
i guess the focus is on this: can the master user itunes list be made available to other users on that same computer while they are logged in as other users (and the master account is logged off, which it has to be in order for the secondary accounts to be logged in, right?) I can't think of any other way to ask this, so i hope that clarified what we have tried and what we are asking for.

  • Using Aperture 3 with several user accounts

Is there a way to share Aperture's library among several users accounts ? Just like you do with iPhoto's library when you put it in the shared users folder ?

How is your workflow set up? How are you moving the Aperture Library around? What OS X and what Aperture versions?
After backup to an independent drive (stuff happens...) make sure all apps and the OS are current. Also read this regarding

  • Question re. sharing iTunes library with other user accounts

    I have seen this document:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
I want to share one library with four users on my account.  I'd like for any music purchased or ripped to this computer to end up in User 1's iTunes library, and for Users 2, 3 and 4 to have access to User 1s library just as User 1 does.
When I follow the directions for "Listening to another account's music files" in the above referenced document, it tells me to navigate to User 1's library through the dialog box that pops up after User 2 clicks "Add to LIbrary".
The problem is, when User 2 is doing that, and User 1 has put the iTunes library in ~user1/public, as the directions suggest, that dialog box won't allow user 2 to access User 1's Public folder.
    Thoughts?
    Thanks in advance...
    Chris

Another long description in store here...
iTunes has two main elements. One is the library.itl database file.  When you open iTunes it is this that you see. It contains what music is in a library, playlists, date added, playcount, etc.  It is this that is really the library.  The other element are the media files. When you tell iTunes to play a track it checks in its library file which music file is associated with that track and goes and plays it.
Now you say, "for Users 2, 3 and 4 to have access to User 1s library just as User 1 does."  Do you really want User 4 to be able to go and delete or rename tracks, or change the playlists? This can be done if you really want it.  Or do you want each person to keep their own library [file] and share media?  Even that has disadvantages as a person might still be able to rename a file or even delete it for all.  At least everybody would have their own playlists, ratings, etc, though a person could delete a file and then it would appear as a broken link for others.  To be honest, iTunes isn't great for sharing.

Exactly what you want to do will involve different setups so before going into detailed insructions it would help to know which ones to provide.  Here's an sampling:

iTunes Home Sharing now works between users on same computer - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3865597  The problem with HS is I think you then end up with multiple copies of files, one for each user.  At least they cannot damage another's collection though.
