Using SCCM servers WSUS component

Hi
We currently have a SCCM 2012 environment with Windows 7 clients registered into it.  We are using Software Updates in SCCM to successfully deploy Windows updates to the Windows 7 clients.
We also have several Windows Server 2008/2012 servers, but these are NOT registered in SCCM or have the SCCM client installed onto them.  And we don't want them in SCCM at all.
We want to be able to manage the Windows updates to these servers as well, and the obviously this requires a WSUS server.
I am aware that the WSUS server component is installed on our SCCM 2012 server, but not sure if we should be using this for managing updates to servers, as it is controlled via SCCM.
So my questions are:
1 - Can i use the WSUS component on the SCCM server to deploy windows updates to our servers OK?  And will it not conflict/mess with SCCM?
2 - Or, should i ideally have a seperate server running WSUS, which is used to deploy windows updates to our servers, and leave SCCM for our Windows 7 clients.
Many Thanks

i cont find any Microsoft document on this but in general,if you have WSUS integrated to Configmgr ,there is no necessity to configure/touch anything on WSUS ,all will be taken care by SCCM from creating local GPO on clients, syncing,downloading and deployment
of updates etc.Backend ,it uses wsus to sync with Microsoft and to download metadata etc.
In your case, if you use the existing WSUS(used for Configmgr) ,you may have to create GPO to point the client to talk this wsus server and it will be a big mess and you loose the existing Configmgr functions .
suggest to create another standalone WSUS Server and create GPO to point to this WSUS for servers.
Why dont you manage the servers via SCCM if you already have existing setup? it provides you great flexibility interms of rebooting the servers (using maintenance window) using different collections ,better deployment ,reporting and troubleshooting.

  • Use SCCM as a standard WSUS server as well as a Software Update point?

    Is it possible to use SCCM as a standard WSUS server as well as a Software Update point? I have 2 scenarios:
    1) create software update packages and deploy them via software update groups in Configuration Manager
    2) configure a group policy to set internal WSUS server to the SCCM server with SUP role, and allow servers to pull updates
    - Is this technically possible?
    - Do I need to pre-download the updates that i want delivered via method (2) above ?
    I am running Systems Center Configuration Manager 2012 R2 with SUP installed.

    100% agree with Jason. Sounds like a idea full of hassle and I'd imagine weirdness could creep in. I'd use ConfigMgr to patch the servers for the advanced reporting alone.

  • Can we Deploy VM using task sequnce on ESXi servers using SCCM?

    Hi Team,
    I want to deploy windows 7(64 bit) on a VMware ESxi server by using SCCM task sequence .Please tell me can we image it using SCCM? If not please tell me what are the prerequisite for this.
    Also tell me what is SCVMM (Virtual Machine Manager)? Is this used for deploying virtual machines? I don't have SCVMM, I only have SCCM 2012.
    Thanks
    Prashant

    Hi Team,
    I want to deploy windows 7(64 bit) on a VMware ESxi server by using SCCM task sequence .Please tell me can we image it using SCCM? If not please tell me what are the prerequisite for this.
    Couple of ways to interpret this.
    If you just want to know if you can use PXE deployments on VMs like VMWare the answer is yes, but you must use the e1000 legacy adapter as the para-virtualization VMNet adapters don't not support PXE deployment.  Similar is true of Hyper-V BTW.
    If you _also_ want to deploy the VM itself then we are coordinating SCCM with other tools like Orchestrator, SMA, maybe even the Microsoft WAP (Windows Azure Pack).  It's
    absolutely doable, but it's no longer a pure SCCM question.  We are now talking about self-service workflows and all the wonderful steps that entails.
    Bonus points:  Now VMware has decided vmdk or bust, but both Xen and MS have decided  VHDs are cool ... and if that back-end storage is NAS head with SMB support you can use SCCM to offline patch your templates, too.

  • Can I Manage virtual machines using SCCM? What about Amazon ec2 instances?

    Hi All,
    As part of my lab environment, I would like to discover and manage virtual machines within ESXi platform and a few on Hyper-V. As part of this,
    1] Do we need SC-VMM to create/discover/manage virtual machines or can this be done by using just SCCM 2012 module?
    2] Does SCCM provide any connectors to public cloud services (ex: Amazon EC2 or Google Cloud services)? Can this be done using SCCM?
    Any help on this would be appreciated. thanks

    Thanks Jason.
    A few follow up questions just to make sure I understand you correctly:
    a] Statement: I understand SCCM can manage OS within any VM (I just realized my set up has discovered 2 VM's running Win 2008 OS via AD discovery method). My confusion began after going thru SC-VMM docs. I assumed, once you have SC-VMM set up, it will discover/manage
    either ESXi servers or Citrix or other vendor hypervisors and then discover VM's within the hypervisors. But as you said, SCCM can manage OS within any VM.
    b] Q: my sccm set up is part of domain 'A' and its discovering systems/users as part of domain 'A'. Is there a way to discover systems as part of domain 'B'? When I look into 'discovery methods' -> Active directory system discovery -> Add a new container
    -> path -> select a new container -> it selects only domain 'A'
    As a result I'm not able to add a secondary domain for system discovery. IS this how its supposed to be? Discovery runs only within one domain? (or) am I missing something here?
    c] When you said 'Yes, I do think (I'm not familiar with all things VMM though) that there is a connector to EC2', did you mean a connector from SCCM or a connector from VMM component?
    thanks again for all the help.

  • SCCM / SUP / WSUS

    Looking for some clarification on SCCM 2012 and WSUS integration.  I was not the person that set this site up and am coming in trying to get everything cleaned up.  The setup is a single Windows Server 2008 R2 with SCCM 2012, SUP, and WSUS
    3.0.  The server has a direct connection to the internet.
    When I login to SCCM and check the "Software Update Point Component Properties" the option to synchronize from Microsoft update is checked.  All of the PCs on the domain seem to be updating OK.
    When I login to the WSUS console it shows over 4000 updates awaiting approval.
    To me it seems like SCCM is bypassing WSUS entire and just downloading the windows updates directly from MS and pushing them out to the domain.  WSUS does not appear to actually be doing anything at this point.
    My question - is the WSUS role even required at this point with SCCM directly updating from MS?
    Secondary question - If the WSUS role is required for the updates still, does it harm anything to not have SCCM and WSUS synced?

    First question; Yes, WSUS is required. ConfigMgr uses the metadata of WSUS. Also, the clients will still be scanning against WSUS, but based on the deployments send out by ConfigMgr.
    Second question: Once configured ConfigMgr will automatically sync WSUS. You can see that on things like the configured products and categories. One thing you won't see are updates approved in WSUS.
    Also, when you are using ConfigMgr for deploying updates, you should stop touching the WSUS console.

  • Deploy Java and Oracle updates using SCCM 2007 Software Updates

    Hi Team,
    I am using SCCM 2007 to deploy software updates on all my servers. Now i want deploy updates fro third party tools like Adobe, Java etc..Please suggest me on how to deploy these updates using SCCM.
    I am looking for other simple solution than SCUP 2011. Please suggest.
    Thanks
    Siva

    Hi,
    SCUP 2011 would be the way to do it or a package/program. There are commercial software solutions that plugins to configuration Manager like Secunia
    http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/corporate/sc2012_plugin/ ,Solarwinds
    http://www.solarwinds.com/patch-manager.aspx and Shavlik
    http://www.shavlik.com/products/scupdates/ that offer a subscription of updates for these products for a cost of course.

  • How to update Office 365 using SCCM 2012 R2?

    Hi,
    I am using SCCM 2012 R2 and Office 365 ProPlus.
    At products list (Software Update Point Components Properties) there is not Office 365.
    Office 365 automatically updates from Internet.
    I need to know the following:
    How to disable Internet automatic updates at Office 365
    How to deploy updates for Office 365 from SCCM.
    Thanks in advance!

    Funny thing you can't deploy those updates via WSUS and/ or ConfigMgr. See for more information:

    Also, make sure to read part 2 as it provides dome guidance on controlled testing of those updates.

    anyone manage or use sccm to track user's HP docking station serial number and model before?

    The pin in picture looks liek a 5mm pin and one one on docking station is a smart pin. So you would need something like the one in picture in this link.
    In the picture observe the component in left hand bottom corner.

    I would say, take the adaptor to store and get one.

  • Zero touch deployment using SCCM

    Hi,
    As SCCM is called as zero touch deployment method for operating system deployment. So please help me to clear my below doubts –
    How SCCM take care of backup & restore of entire HDD, if SCCM does not take care of backup & restore of entire HDD then how we can say it is zero touch deployment method?

    we can use USMT tool with SCCM to decide what we need to backup. I think good planned infrastructure will always have users data on file servers rather than on user's local system. please refer below few URLs for more information:

  • Adobe Creative Cloud Enterprise Deployment Issues using SCCM 2012 R2

    Hi,
    I have been trying to deploy Adobe Creative Cloud Enterprise to Windows 8.1 machines that are identical, using SCCM 2012 R2.
    The Adobe package seems fine, because it seems to deploy successfully to some machines. And SCCM 2012 R2 has been configured correctly, as I can deploy other software using it, and again, it deploys Adobe CC successfully to some of the machines.
    I have tried comparing the package that is downloaded on the test machine/client machine, with the original package on the distribution point, using Beyond Compare, and there are no differences.
    I have contacted Adobe Enterprise Support, and they asked me to send to them log files from Event Viewer, the msi installer, and other Adobe logs, from the machine that failed the deployment. However, after Adobe studying them, they told me that they could not identify any problems... Strange, because I could have sworn that I saw error 1603 pop up over 20 times on different machines indicating that the 'Set-up.dat' file had a problem with it.
    After all the testing on over 20 identical machines (same hardware/same software), using different configurations on SCCM 2012 R2 and the client machines, I still can't seem to have a reliable solution to deploying Adobe CC.
    The fact that it deploys successfully on one machine and fails on another, or sometimes deploy to two machines and fail on another (simultaneously), is something that I don't understand.
    Another thing is that, if I retry the deployment 10-15 times after it failed the first time, it might go through...
    Adobe Enterprise Support asked me if they could remote into a machine that failed the deployment to have a look at it and I agreed to that option, but it seems like my issue has been ignored because they never got back to me.
    Has anyone had this kind of problem or anything similar before?
    I need to be able to deploy this remotely to 100+ machines. So installing manually is not an option.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi Robert,
    We seem to be having a very similar issue.  Our installs would randomly fail with error code 1603 and an error message about a fault in Set-up.dat.  Failure rate was near 95% on our 900 machines.  Adobe Support and Karl having been looking into our issues but so far no solution has been found.
    Having done a lot of investigating we've managed to deploy our package using a schedule task running as a domain admin.  This is a nasty solution and we don't intend on using this permanently, but we needed to get the package out.

  • Using a different default component state within each page state

    I am using a custom component in multiple page states but would like to have a different default state (for the same custom component) within each page state.
    Is there anyway to use a different default component state within each page state .
    When I change the default state at a component level it seems to go across all my page states.  Any solutions?

  • Using the radio button component to go to a frame on a MovieClip

    hello,
    I am using the radio button component in Flash with a continue button.
    When the user clicks their option in the radio button and then clicks continue, I want it to go to a movieClips Specific frame.
    Here is the breakdown and the script I have so far is below.
    The radio group os named RadioButtonGroup
    The instance names for each of the three options are noviceButton,intermediateButton,expertButton
    My continue button has an instance name of continueButton
    and my movie clip I am trying to target has an instance name of level_mc
    here is my code so far:
    continueButton.enabled=false
    noviceButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, revealContinue);
    intermediateButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, revealContinue);
    expertButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, revealContinue);
    function revealContinue(evt){
        continueButton.enabled=true;
    continueButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, clickContinue);
    function clickContinue(evt){
    var frameNumber=mc_levels.Number(noviceButton.group.selectedData)
    gotoAndStop (frameNumber);
    the problem starts with my varFrame line-I don't know how to get it to go to the movieClip and gotoAndStop at a specific frame, based on which radio button was clicked and after the continue button is clicked.
    Does anyone out there have any ideas?
    thanks

    use:
    continueButton.enabled=false
    noviceButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, revealContinue);
    intermediateButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, revealContinue);
    expertButton.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, revealContinue);

    Yes, I want help for the missing code to add in actionPerformed method below. As a result, when you confirm the selected color (clicking the OK button), it will be transferred to a variable color of class ShowMyColor.
    // instanciate okButton with its inanymous class
    // to handle its related events
              okButton = new JButton ("OK");
              okButton.setToolTipText("To confirm the current color");
              okButton.setMnemonic('o');
              okButton.addActionListener(
                   new ActionListener(){
                        public void actionPerformed (ActionEvent e)
                        {     // code permetting to transfer
                             // the current color to the parent
                             // component backgroung color
