Using second computer with iMac monitor

Does anyone know if it is possible to use the imac as a monitor for a second computer? I have speciality software that must run on XP and dual booting would be a problem secondary to need for a set IP address and support at my place is lousy. I used to use a monitor switch to share a monitor with 2 CPUs. Does anyone know if you can do a similar thing using the iMAC as the monitor for the second CPU?
Thanks

Unfortunately, the iMac doesn't have video-in capabilities, and you won't be able to use it as a monitor.
I hope this helps.

How can one use Mission Control with two monitors.  With Spaces I could treat each space as a single desktop.

I use two monitors at work and have no issue. I have my mail set to use Desktop 1 and iTunes set to the second monitor of Desktop 1. I have browsers set to Desktop 2 and Fusion and RDC set to Desktop 3.
Two things that may help you. In System Preferences > Mission Control, disable the setting "Automatically rearrange spaces...". This screwed with assigning applications to certain spaces. And the other thing is don't use full screen on apps that support it. This just makes your second monitor superfluous.

How to authorize second computer with one id in digital edition

    Dear Dominic,
When I try to authorize my laptop, after writing my username and password, I get the message  "You can only authorize this computer with an ADOBE ID that hasn't been previously used to authorize any other computer or mobile devices. Please try again"
That means it doesn't PERMIT me to aythorize my second computer (a laptop) with the same adobe ID (that was used for my first computer, a PC)...
Thank you in advance for your help...

  • Can I use 1 computer with 2 different iTunes accounts and devices? We're afraid we're going to wipeout one library or the other if we do??

My son got an iPhone and wanted his own iTunes account. Now his computer died, and he wants to connect to his iTunes account on my computer. When it asks to sync the computer, a message comes up and we're afraid either his or my library are going to be wiped out by trying to do this. Is it possible to use 1 computer with 2 different iTunes accounts and devices without wiping out one of the libraries? Thanks for any info.

If the content was not originally purchased/synced to the device from your computer it will erase and replace the content from the device with that of the computer. If you have content that you want to backup you can transfer purchases http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848 check this link out

Hi HRHundt2, if you have suite installed, then if you try deactivating any application will eventually deactivate complete suite.

Hi, do you mean a real Dial-up Modem as in the old days?
As I recall, the Apple USB Modem won't work in 64 bit OSes, but there are others that will, I think this is one of them...

  • How do I use a second computer as a monitor?

    Hi,
I have an iMac and a MacBook Pro. I want to primarily use my iMac and use my macbook as a monitor. I'm a musician and I want to run Ableton on one screen and maschine on another.
For some reason I can't find any forums explaining this, unless I'm just wording it wrong. I'm assuming it's a cord I need, probably a firewire.
    Anyone know what to do?
    Thanks,
    Savanna

Ok, thanks. So my iMac takes a mini displayport cable and my macbook pro takes a thunderbolt cable. Do you know if they make cables with one side mini
displayport and the other side thunderbolt? I tried searching but found nothing. I'm guessing the only difference between the two (since they physically look the same) is the wiring inside, so they can't make a cord with both together.

be sure to have an external trackpad keyboard or mouse as you will loose them on the computer once it is closed.

  • OpenGL freezes computer with dual monitors and fglrx

I am trying to use the fglrx driver, and with a single monitor I seem to have gotten everything working.
However I am running into issues with two monitors. Basically, when I have two monitors any opengl program doesn't run properly.
There are two cases. If I use the xorg.conf generated by "aticonfig --initial", it still seems to detect the other monitor (although there is a black region on my gnome desktop). If an opengl program is run, the screen goes crazy where random pixels are changing different colors. I can end the program, and everything goes back to normal.
Using the program "amdcccle" I generated xorg.conf for dual monitors (I pasted it below). When I use this configuration, any opengl program completely freezes the computer instantly.
I have been looking for a while, but have not found any information that might lead to a solution. Does anyone here have any advice?

    Hello.
I put my second monitor of a dual monitor set-up to the left of the main monitor - the one with the FC application, keyboard and mouse, etc. Trouble is the mouse kept hitting the left hand wall of my main monitor when I tried to send it to the second monitor. After a while I realized the mouse/computer thinks the second monitor is to its right, so I have to exit the right hand side of the main monitor to get to the one on the left.
Is there any way to instruct FC and the mouse that the second monitor is on the left? Can the mouse be instructed to "pass" through the left hand wall of the main monitor rather than the right? Or must the second monitor always go the right of the main monitor?
    Thanks.

  • Using ASUS PB287Q  with other monitors

I am using an ASUS PB287Q 4K monitor together with to other 1920x1080 displays. The graphic board is AMD FirePro D300 2048 MB. ASUS is connected via HDMI port. OS X is 10.10.2
Each time the ASUS monitor is switched of or refreshed by the computer for whatever reason, all windows open on that monitor are being resized to about 2/3 of the screen. The Photoshop windows are not resized but pushed downward while Acrobat windows are only resized if not used in full screen mode. Sometimes Safari windows are being resized, in other occasions not. The behavior is extremely annoying.
Is there any help or workaround?

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM

Does the Asus monitor have a displayport/mini displayport input? If so use that.

  • Using the GT70 with external monitor and lid closed

I wasn't sure where to post this question.
I have several laptops and use external monitors. I close the lid on the laptops and the display continues to work.
On the GT70, the system shuts down. It won't allow me to use the external keyboard and mouse or display the session.
Any suggestions if there is a configuration option to allow the GT70 to continue to function with external monitor and lid closed.

Yup. This is a windows setting. You need to go into your control panel -> power options -> "Choose when the computer sleeps" and "Choose what closing the lid does"
That should solve the problem. I currently have my GT70 hooked up to a 42" TV and I can close the lid and it stays on and the TV continues displaying as well. No problems. =]

  • Using UPS units with iMac G5 (iSight)

I just bought an APC RS 800 VA UPS for my iMac and now find that it might not be a good idea. There is a post on Macintouch about a report from APC tech saying that the cheaper units are not compatible with iMacs because of the squarewave (vs sinewave) output. If it goes on battery power, it could damage the iMac power supply.
Very strange, because they have the iMac listed on the box the unit shipped in as being ideal for use with this UPS!
Has anyone used the less expensive UPS units with the iMac G5 successfully? Have you had it run on battery power with no noise (hum or buzz) or other anomalies?
    Griff

I do not have a UPS from APC, but a generic one from Best Buy which looks like a unit made by CyberPower. It has kicked in several times without any humming or buzzing at all.
