Using several time capsules, TM should use the one available but just stops.

I appreciate Time Machine in most aspects, but one thing is annoying: I change between two TC hard-disks, one at work and one at home. For now, TM does not make any notice about not finding the previous TC hard-disk. I think it should alert me, and ask if I want to use another one. Or even simpler, use the first in a list of target disks that I have acknowledged. This should be a simple change, I think.
Could I get any explanation or work-around for this, this should be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry, there is no work around for this.

  • Time capsule wireless so slow with one Macbook but not other

We have a Time capsule network set up to run at 5 GHz, and (out of necessity because of the problems) an older wireless g access point running in parallel.
One macbook running Leopard gets good speed when connected to the 5Ghz network, as does the Apple TV, which can also stream almost flawlessly by airtunes to an airport express connected to a hifi.
However, if I try to connect to another macbook (still running Tiger) to the time capsule network (even with the other components switched off) then the connection is frequently really slow, such that the web becomes unusable and it is impossible to reliably stream to the express or ATV. However, if I switch to our old g rated wireless access point connected to the same router as the Time capsule then I get a much higher speed connection, although airtunes still intermittently drops sound, but I can stream an HD movie to ATV with no problem.
Why is one Macbook fine but the other is so slow on the 5Ghz network?

Glad to see the overwhelming response to my post : )
Anyway, I have upgraded the OS to Snow Leopard and the 5Ghz network seems to have speeded up considerably on this macbook. Perhaps it was a problem with Tiger.

Before I answer your questions, let me first just say thank you so much for your amazing patience and helpfulness.  Whether or not we get to the bottom of this, I am very, very grateful to you.
We will get to the bottom of it, and you're quite welcome.  Don't feel you ought to know all this stuff -- none of us were born with it!
By the way, in answer to your original question, yes, you can use the Time Capsule while backups are running. There's no conflict at all.
    1)  Estimated size of full backup:  205.94 GB
    2)  My LaCie has available:  11.04 GB of 359.95 GB
That's part of the problem right there; 360 GB is a bit small to back up 206 GB.  Ordinarily, a Time Machine drive should be 2-3 times the size of the data it's backing-up, so Time Machine can keep a reasonable "depth" of old backups for you.
It looks like Time Machine is trying to do a fairly large backup, and there just isn't enough room for it.
But something doesn't quite add up.  Time Machine should have deleted all but your most recent backup, trying to make room for the new one.  But that would mean there should only be a bit less than 206 GB on the disk, not 360.
A clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

  • Two Macs using separate Time Capsules on same network - The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error 2.)

Six hours of configuration and I'm out of ideas.
    Here's the layout:
Cisco Cable Modem connects to my ISP. It uses DHCP to distribute IP addresses which is necessary as ethernet throughout the house is piggybacked on coax and the ethernet to coax adapter has a mac address and needs to take an IP address (DirectTV - not my idea). Though not my preferred config, this seems solid.
Cable Modem connects via ethernet (though this crazy coax adapter) to Downstairs Time Capsule (call it DTC). DTC is set to create network without using DHCP so that no duplicate IPs are dished out. No problems so far - everything works. DTC has a MacMini hooked up by parallel ethernet and the MacMini is set to back up to the DTC disk, called "Combo Time Machine". Back up is running smoothly, no problems.
On the same network there is another Time Capsule connected, called Upstairs Time Capsule (UTC). UTC is set to create network in bridge mode so as to repeat the network created by the DTC (to increase range). All of this is, network-wise, is working fine:
UTC is connected by parallel ethernet to an iMac which I want to back up to the UTC disk, called "iMac Time Machine". This is where the problem starts. It seems logical that one Mac could backup to one Time Capsule while a different Mac back up to a different Time Capsule, even though everything is on the same network, right?
So here's what I see while using the iMac to try to configure Time Machine upstairs:
    Looks good, right?
It's as if the Time Machine software confuses the two Time Capsules - it's asking for the Downstairs Time Capsule disk password, not the Upstairs one as it should be. Still, I try the password and here's what I get:
"The operation couldn't be completed. (OSStatus error 2)" means nothing to me... little help?

I have an idea this is going to take some working out.
What IP is the upstairs TC and what IP is the downstairs one?
Can you ping them both please by name and by IP address?
Can you manually mount the share you will use for time machine in the iMac upstairs..
In finder go, connect to server.
    Type in the name AFP://user@TCname
You will then be asked for the password and it should be able to be stored in the keychain. Then select that for TM.. if TM still carries on, reset it and try again. See A4 here.

The double entry and refusing to join the right disk is a Mountain Lion trait.

  • I am getting this error when time machine tries to back up to a time capsule.  "The backup disk image "/Volumes/JUDY ARCENEAUX's Time Capsu-1/JUDY ARCENEAUX's MacBook Air.sparsebundle" is already in use."  Same time capsule has worked in the past.

First, restart the computer and the Time Capsule. In most of the cases, this should solve the problem.

  • What can I change to gain access to my work vpn.  I can access with my MacBook Air and other routers.  Can use my ipad and this time capsule to successfully access the VPN.

What can I change to gain access to my work vpn.  I can access with my MacBook Air and other routers.  Can use my ipad and this time capsule to successfully access the VPN.

You need to give us a lot more info.
I presume the MBA and the TC are the combo that doesn't work, although you don't clearly state that.
If the ipad and TC work.. are you sure the ipad is connected via the TC and not 3G network?
If it is then the TC itself is fine and the issue might be setup on the MBA.. although if the MBA works with other routers.. that rather confuses the matter.
You need to actually tell us how the TC is setup in the network. What kind of broadband modem you have and what kind of vpn you are using.

  • HT3275 My time capsule reports an error The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data-1/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.

    Help !
The last few days my time capsule reports an error       The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use.
To make things worse I seem to be loosing my screen so need to make a back up ASAP

Make sure that no other Macs are backing up at the time.
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
This will fix the issue about 98% of the time. If you are in the unlucky 2% category, please post back for more assistance

what player do you intend to use? That is what I am wanting to check.. you understand there is no itunes server in the TC..
BTW if you want to use the TC in your car/SUV.. convert it to 12v operation.

  • HT3728 I am trying to use my airport time capsule as an extender on my network, but I can't find it anywhere now.  Tried a reset, but device is lost.

I set up a new network with a new AirPort Extreme station.  I was able to reset all of my old devices, Airport Express, etc., by I haven't been able to get my time capsule to attach to the new network.  It just doesn't show up anywhere.

Ultimately I am using it as an extender itself.
Thanks, but I'm not sure that you understand that an extender can function using a network Ethernet wired connection or a wireless connection.
So, we asked for clarification on what you wanted to do in our previous post. We asked......
Will the Time Capsule "extend" by connecting using an Ethernet cable to the AirPort Extreme?
Or, are you hoping to have the Time Capsule "extend" the signal wirelessly?
    We also asked.....
Are you still using OS X 10.6 as your profile indicates? If not, what is the operating system you are using?
We have a Time Capsule, have seen this issue, and know how to fix it. So we can likely help, but we cannot see your network, or know your thoughts, so we must ask for your assistance.
It is possible that you are not comfortable providing the information that we requested. We understand. In that case, please wait for another person to respond to your question.

If you have not done so, try exiting the Photo app (and maybe more apps if you have a lot open) from the Open Apps List and see if a discount/reconnect opens the app. If that does not work, try powering down the iPad and test. If it is still not working try a hard reset by pressing both Home and Sleep/Wake buttons at the same time until the Apple graphic appears, ignoring the Slide to Power Off button.

Her own ID.  You cannot transfer purchases between IDs so anything bought on your account will require your authorization should she need to download in the future.

  • Just had my HD replaced. Want to recover from Time Capsule.  Should I be able to select Time Capsule drive on boot?

Prior to replacing the HD, I was able to hold the option key while powering on and it would prompt me for startup device.  HD was formatted, but no OS install (thought I could just do Time Machine recovery).  Connected to Time Capsule again (via Ethernet port) and option/power-on just sits there.  Then tried PRam reset, and afterward, same behavior.  Should this have worked?

Sorry for the delayed response.  This indeed seemed to be the case:  I connected my wife's MacBook to my iMac via firewire, connected my iMac to the Time Capsule via ethernet, held the option key while powering on, and was then able to restore via Time Capsule (hooray!).   Interestingly, I first attempted to restore with the latest backup, which was from about 20 hours *after* I discovered that the iMac was displaying symptoms of HD corruption.  At the end of restoration, the iMac would not reboot.  I then restored again with a version of the backup from just before the last time I used the iMac with no problem and everything worked fine.  I'm guessing that this means the time capsule backup actually stored a corrupted write at some point.  I haven't done anything about it yet, but I'm wondering whether I should now create a fresh full backup.  Thanks for the advice!
