Using side loading dvd drive with mini dvds

I am setting up a holiday project for my neices and nephew to make video christmas cards using photos and video from all year. The video is stored on the mini dvds that my sister uses in her Sony video camera. I have never tried to load a mini dvd into the imac since it doesn't have a tray. Has anyone ever done this?
Please advise.

You should not use the mini-DVs or mini-CDs in a slot loading iMac. If you do insert one of those discs you may have to disassemble the iMac and the drive to get the disc out.
BTW, this is the discussion area for the iMac G4.
The iMac G4 has a tray-loading drive.
If your iMac doesn't have a tray it is not an iMac G4.

  • Can I use a 2tb external drive with Time Machine to backup my Mac Mini (256gbSSD + 2tbHDD)?

    Can I use a 2tb external drive with Time Machine to backup what I have on my Mac Mini?
    My Mac Mini has one 256 SSD and one 2tb HDD. I want to use Time Machine to do a backup of everything.
    Would an external 2tb My Passport Drive by Western Digital work for the backup?
    It seems like it would not work because the total storage on the Mac Mini is 2304 gigabytes (SSD + HDD).
    And the external Western Digital drive is only 2048 in gigabytes versus 2304 gigabytes the Mac Mini has.

    No. A Time Machine backup drive should have at least twice the capacity of the drive it backs up. You would need at least a 4 TB backup drive for Time Machine.
    Might I suggest as an alternative that you not use Time Machine but a third-party backup utility that simply overwrites older files with new ones such that the backup drive can be the same capacity as the drive backed up.

  • Can I use a sata3 hard drive with a late 2009 imac

    Looks liker the hard drive in my five year old iMac is about to go belly up. Was getting hardware errors, very slow startup and Carbon Copy Cloner reported bad blocks during the backup. I want to buy a new HD at a local store and have the Apple store install it. Will they do that and can I use a SATA 3 drive with my older iMac?

    YEs you can use a SATA III drive but the Apple Store will not install it for you. Find an AASP and see if they'll install a drive for you.

  • I am not able to use my external hard drive with my Mac.

    I am not able to use my external hard drive with my Mac. It was initially used with my Windows 7 laptop. Now when I insert my Hard drive in the Mac, it doesn't allow me to delete, format, make folders or copy new files on to my hard drive. I no longer have a Windows PC and am stuck. I tried going to Disc utilities,selected my HD, clicked on Erase and then changed the Format type to MS-DOS (FAT) but no luck .. Any other steps or advice?

    It was likely formatted in NTFS which is readable by the Mac, but not writeable.
    You should be able to reformat the disk in Disk Utility.
    After having copied all the data off of it, you can try re-partitioning it.
    Select the hard drive in the disk list in Disk Utility. Hard drives are the device itself, are left-aligned in the list, and are usually named with the manufacturer, size, and model number.
    Click on the Partition tab.
    Select 1-partition from the partition menu.
    Click the Options button and set to GUID
    Set the format to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Give the Volume a name and click Apply.

    Try the other USB port. If it still doesn't show up in Disk Utility then there may be something wrong with your Mac. Try something else in each USB port and see if it is seen. If the other thing, like a USB thumb drive, does show up in disk utiltiy then the USB ports are fine.
    Power down the system and restart with the drive connected, go to DU and see it it is seen.

  • Can I use an external hard drive with my ipad 2

    can I use an external hard drive with my ipad 2

    There are WiFi enabled portable hard drives available that can stream media, such as music or video, to your iPad, but no external hard drive in the sense of how you would use one with a computer.

  • Can I use a USB thumb drive with iPad

    Can I use a USB thumb drive with iPad2

    What do you want to do with the thumb drive?
    If for picture/movie files, You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
    Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov).
    Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import.

    I'm able to transfer iPhotos from Mac to MacPro but data I've added to photos does not transfer. What am I missing? Tried using Thunderbolt, AirDrop, Flash drive with no success. Do I have to use iCloud for 800 vacation photos or re-enter all the data after transfer?

    There is no support for mirroring or syncing iPhoto libraries or Aperture libraries.  You can however export partial Aperture libraries on one mac and merge them into other libraries on a second Mac.
    To transfer your edited photos open your photolibrary in Aperture and and collect the edited photos in an album. Then select the album and use the command "File export > Album as new library". This will export all edited photos as a new Aperture library. Copy this library to your other Mac and import it with "File < Import > Library to your other photolibrary on that computer (assuming you are having the same Aperture version on both macs). When merging the new library into your Aperture library, opt to keep the newer versions from the imported library.  iPhoto 9.5.1 will be able to open these merged Aperture 3.5.1 libraries.

  • Why Class.forName is used to load the driver ?

    Hi all,
    Why Class.forName() is used to load the driver ?. Can I use any other method to load the driver safely ?.

    That's still redundant. Sure, it works. Here are some equivalent forms:
        new MySqlDriver();
        DriverManager.registerDriver(new MySqlDriver());
        New LinkedList().add(new MySqlDriver());
        if (new MySqlDriver() == new MySqlDriver())
            System.out.println("department of redundancy department");
        Driver unusedVariable[] = new Driver[] { new MySqlDriver() };
        Class anotherUnusedVariable = MySqlDriver.class; // I'm not 100% sure this works
        new File(new MySqlDriver().toString());
        while (new MySqlDriver() == null)
        new Double(Math.sqrt(new MySqlDriver().toString().length()) / 42);

  • Using an external hard drive with a 400mhz iMac slot loader

    I need to upgrade my iMac to either Tiger or Leopard. I also need the capability to run Classic for a few programs. I know I need more memory which I will install. My question is about whether or not I can connect a 640GB MiniMax Desktop Hard Drive via fire wire and install the new operating system on it to use when needed. Also, can a Mac Mini be connected to my iMac and used as an external drive? My current 10GB hard drive only has around 2GB free. I have no problems with pulling off some programs that I don't use but I'm not totally sure how to do it. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

    You can boot your iMac from a connected FireWire drive. It must be FireWire and not USB. G3 Macs cannot run Leopard. Tiger will work fine, if you have more RAM.
    Also, can a Mac Mini be connected to my iMac and used as an external drive?
    If the Mac Mini is PowerPC and not the current Intel version, you should be able to start the Mac mini in FireWire Target Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
    and connect it to the iMac's FireWire port as an external drive. If the Mac mini is PowerPC and has Tiger installed on it, the iMac should even be able to boot from that installation. If it has Leopard, you can still connect to it for data storage purposes, but you cannot boot the iMac from it.
    If the Mac mini is Intel, the drive is partitioned using +GUID Partition Table+ (instead of +Apple Partition Map+ used by PowerPC Macs). Therefore, access to the drive using FireWire Target Disk Mode will depend on the OS installed on the iMac. It should work if the OS is Tiger. It will not work with Panther and earlier.
    If you want to use a Mac mini to off-load some of the data on the iMac, you may want to use a network connection instead. Then, you will have full access to the Mac mini while it shares its storage space with the old iMac.

  • Fglrx: How to load intel driver with various options, e.g. AccelMethod

    Hi,
    When using fglrx and pxpress on a system with hybrid graphics, how can options be set for the intel device?
    Normally in the "xorg.conf" I could just put something like
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Intel Graphics"
    Driver "intel"
    Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
    EndSection
    But with fglrx installed the xorg.conf looks like
    Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Radeon Layout"
    Screen 0 "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0" 0 0
    EndSection
    Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
    Option "VendorName" "ATI Proprietary Driver"
    Option "ModelName" "Generic Autodetecting Monitor"
    Option "DPMS" "true"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
    Driver "fglrx"
    BusID "PCI:6:0:0"
    EndSection
    Section "Screen"
    Identifier "aticonfig-Screen[0]-0"
    Device "aticonfig-Device[0]-0"
    Monitor "aticonfig-Monitor[0]-0"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
    Viewport 0 0
    Depth 24
    EndSubSection
    EndSection
    (Adding an intel device section in here would cause major problems(I get segfaults). I guess because both fglrx/pxpress and xorg try to launch the i915 driver)
    So how can I configure options for the intel driver?
    Why do I want to do this?
    Well aside from the ability to tweak the integrated GPU performance in the usual manner, I have a bug that occurs when UXA is used as the accleration method, but not when SNA is used for the intel driver (even before fglrx is installed on the system). Without fglrx SNA is the default anyway, but fglrx for some reason likes to use UXA.

    Hi, thanks for the new link. Yes, this is completely relevant, but unfortunately it's incomplete & didn't work for me. Please pass this along to the documentation team. Referring to the document, here are the steps I followed:
    A) Starting at section "Restore your computer when Windows 8 cannot start normally" ...
    B) I turned the laptop on & pressed F11 : "System Recovery"
    C) Spinning dots never end, just like during normal start-up, as I reported in original post
    D) -> Document should mention the option of booting from Windows 8 installation DVD
    E) Booting from Windows 8 DVD, I was able to reach step 7 : "On the Advanced options screen, click System Restore ."
    F) I was unable to reach step 8 in the section :  "Click Windows 8 as the target operating system." b/c I need to load the Intel storage driver for the RAID array that's configured in the BIOS, so that System Restore can see my hard drive.
    How can I load that driver??
    Thanks,
    Brad

  • How do I use an external hard drive with iMovie 10.0.1? I have run out of disk space on my Macbook Air.

    How do I use an external drive with iMovie 10.0.1?  It is not obvious and I have run out of space.

    If you want to move a complete iMovie 10 library (file with .imovielibrary extension) click on the library in the libraries pane and select  File - Consolidate Library Media.  This ensures that all media is copied to the library.  You can then move the library onto your external drive using Finder.  The first time to want to access it from iMovie you will have to tell it where it is by choosing  File - Open Library -Other and navigating to it.
    If you only want to transfer part of a library to another drive, create a new library a at the desired location  File - Open Library - New  and copy projects and events to it from within iMovie.
    Its all described in iMovie help - "Work with multiple libraries".
    Geoff.

  • Using the same external drive with Time Machine on new mac?

    I recently got a new mac because my old one broke. Thankfully, I had a fresh backup on Time Machine ready to restore onto my new computer. But when I try to use Time Machine with my new computer, it keeps wanting to do a whole new backup. It won't recognize the latest backup to only add new or changed files.
    Here's a breakdown of my events:
    new computer
    restore Time Machine on new computer at install
    want to continue using the external drive with Time Machine from where I left off (only adding new files since the last backup) on my new computer
    Time Machine wants to do a whole new backup
    Question: How can I continue to use my existing external hard drive with Time Machine on my new computer, picking up where I left off (not a new, complete backup)?
    My old computer was Snow Lepoard, my new one is Lion.

    That should have left a "trail" in your SystemMigration log, so Time Machine can figure out what happened and automatically "inherit" the old backups.  But sometimes, obviously, that doesn't work.
    Since it didn't, there's a chance you can do it manually.  See #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Using Time Machine Backup Drive with NEW Macbook Pro

    I just got a new Macbook Pro. I migrated from my old MacBook Pro. Now I want to use my Time Machine Disk with this new machine.
    When I connect the external drive, and select back up now, it says there is not enough space (due to the fact this is a new machine and it wants to backup the entire thing)
    Also, when I go into the TimeMachine, it doesn't show me anything past today. . . all of my backups are not displayed over the past year. . .
    How do I make it so that the external drive displays all my old backups. . . ??
    Thank you for your help.

    Turn off TM or set the backup drive to null. Rename your computer in Sharing preferences to the same computer name of your old computer. Turn TM back on and reselect the backup drive. TM will behave as you expect. Of course if the file dates on the new machine are all changed since the migration, then TM will correctly assume that they require backing up. You will then find that there will not be sufficient space on the drive for the new backups. If this occurs then you should simply erase the backup drive and start your TM backup anew.
