USING SLIDES COPIED ON A CD ON NON-MAC COMPUTERS

I copied an iPhoto alblum on a blank CD. I took it to a friends house so they could view the photos as a slide show. It wouldn't work. Any ideas? I have an older version of iPhoto. Are there any other options to share with non-Mac user friends>

albums are a collection of photos and if you put those photos on a cd by exporting to a desktop folder and then burning it to cd then any photo viewer on any computer can view them
If you made a slide show and exported it as a Quicktime movie and burned it to CD then anyh compute iwth QT on it can view

Exported Stills Have Pixilation on Non-Mac Computers/Monitors

I'm trying to export a still image from Final Cut Pro so that I can post it on a Facebook page. When I do this, it looks great on both my Mac and my dad's iPad; however, on any non-Mac computer, the image looks terrible! I have e-mailed it to myself and downloaded it to a non-Mac PC, and it still looked terrible, so I don't think Facebook has anything to do with it. Can anybody help me figure out how to export the image and have it look great on a non-Mac PC?

Not really. There are too many variables involved to make an intelligent suggestion.
You need to eliminate some of the variables. If you take that image from your mac, copy the file to a thumb drive, mov the thumb drive to a PC and open that file on the PC, does the problem persist?
Is the problem occurring on more than one PC?
Just out of curiosity, does the image you have posted look dark on your Mac?

I am using a 2TB Time Capsule to backup four Mac computers. Can I also backup the Time Capsule itself to an external 4TB Seagate HD?

I have four Mac computers that are being backed up to a 2TB Time Capsule. I want to know if I can now backup the Time Capsule to an external hard drive. I would like to purchase a Seatgate Backup Plus 4TB Desktop Drive, STCA4000100, to do the job. In simple terms, I want to backup my backup. Does any of this make sense?

Just to add to Bob's comments it would be extremely slow. If you backup the TC 3TB to another drive.. there is no need for a drive bigger than 3TB..btw..
Because the TC cannot back itself up.. at least not incrementals, you need to run the application from a computer.. Bob listed suitable ones,, if you plug the drive into the TC, the files will be copied from TC to the computer then back to the TC and to the extremely slow USB interface. It is better to have the USB disk connected to the fastest interface hopefully USB3 on some computer.
IMHO if you are backing up the TM backups.. any corruption in the backup is then copied straight to the backup of the backups.. you are much better doing a backup fresh and use CCC or superduper to do it so you are using two different softwares. You can also store a couple of disk images of various dates..
One nasty habit of TM is to delete a backup if it discovers it is corrupted in some way.. so all that hard effort in having dated backups is lost in a moment.

Using an external hard drive across two non-networked computers?

i run itunes on my home macbook with my library stored on an external hard drive. it occurred to me that i might be able to bring that hard drive to work and listen to my music on my (windows xp) work computer. so i brought it in, and i can see all the music on the drive, but it doesn't show up in my itunes library on that computer.
how do i go about doing that? is it even possible?

figured it out...i needed to copy the itunes library.itl and itunes library.xml files to my windows pc, and once that was done, itunes recognized the library on my external hard drive.

How do you hook up multiple non-mac computers to an Airport Express?

I have hooked up my airport express and it works for my computer and only my computer. I cannot get the other 2 computers in the house (which are both pcs)to go further than verifying the ip address when trying to log onto the internet. Please help!!

Links not working correctly on non-mac computers

Hi guys-
I have a quicktime movie (mad via keynote) as an intro into my homepage, mimicking what flash does for most sites. I layed a few links over the movie, arranged them to front, which should take visitors to other pages on my site. This method seems to be working fine on macs, but isn't working on pc's (I tried using firefox and IE on several different pc's). It seems to have to do with the quicktime file being present as the other pages seem to be working fine. The website is www.kauaicreative.com. Any solutions or insight would be great. -Paul

One other thing I forgot to mention. On both IE and firefox (when viewed on a pc), when the cursor hovers over the link, the correct linked webpage address shows up in the bottom of the browser. On IE, it doesn't allow you to click (cursor doesn't change to hand) and on firefox instead of taking you to the webpage on the bottom of the browser, it refreshes the current page. Weird. -Paul

Using mail and its rss feed on 2 mac computers

Hello to the mac users comunity!
I have 2 questions here:
1st:
I am using for work a iMac and i am planning to use for my business trips a mac book air.
I am using the mail and its rss feeeds, i would like to be able to read my mails and rss on both computers and above all that when i have read an email on one computer or one rss feed, it appears as "read" in the other computer
Is this possible?
2nd:
I have about 20 different rss feeds folders on mail, for reading them i have to go from one rss feed folder to the other, how is it possible to view all rss feeds mixed up together in one only feed?

Hi, no idea about RSS, chucked that about 10 tears ago,but if it's an IMAP account & you use Mail, it'll still report unread on a Ma that hasen't red it yet, unless you mark it read.

How can we disassociate an Apple ID from a set of computers formated from a single computer using Carbon Copy Cloner and a single image and then Migration Assistant to install their old profile? The original ID is the Apple ID for all the stores.

Here is a bit more detail.
We were replacing old teacher machines and wanted to do it as efficiently as possible. Therefore, we set up one computer, through the OS installation and ran all updates, and then made a disk image so that we can use Carbon Copy Cloner to image all the other computers without having to run all the other updates. Once they were set up to a base level and assigned to a teacher we used Migration Assistant to import all their old files and items. Everything has been fine until recently the computers became aware of needing an update for one or two apps. The machine asks for the original computer's Apple ID for all updates. We have logged out of the apple id and back in with another to test if running the updates will work with that Apple ID and even after a refresh it still asks for the other Apple ID. How can we disassociate the Apple ID from those other computers so that the individual who owns the original is not needed each time there is an update or has to give out their Apple ID password?

There are two parts to this:
1) It may be that you should have an Apple Education Support person helping you with this. If you have enough computers for this to be a problem, you may benefit from a Server, a site license, and an occasional visit from an Education Support Specialist.
2) The brief answer, if you want Individual Apple_IDs to control each computer, is to buy new copies of Mac OS X under those new Apple_IDs and re-download and re-Install. Mac OS X is customized to the Apple_ID before it is downloaded.

There are some issues with IE.
I understand java script must be enabled and internet security on high can be a problem. A medium setting is supposed to be fine.

Crash on Slide Copy or Duplicate

I see from a search on "crash" that there "used" to be a
problem with Captivate crashing (or closing) sometimes, on slide
copy or duplicate. I'm having this problem out of the blue - when I
try to copy or duplicate a slide (but not every slide - some
duplicate okay), Captivate hangs, pegging the CPU at 100%. Here's
the scenario:
1. The file is small (9 MB) and only 21 slides. It is heavy
on the text animation - other than that, it's really basic.
2. I downloaded and ran the updater (as suggested), but,
honestly, I think I already had the lastest version. It didn't help
anyway.
3. I did a save-as.
4. I created a blank movie and imported the slides I needed.
5. I closed everything and rebooted.
6. When none of those things worked, I deleted the slide that
was giving me trouble, and re-created it. Then it worked. For a
minute. Then it started again, with a different slide.
Any ideas? Anyone know why this program is so flakey or when
the new version is slated for release?

Does this happen consistantly on particular slides or is it
more of a random thing? If it occurs consistantly on specific
slides, I'd suspect that there is an object on the slide in
question that Captivate is having trouble with. If this is the
case, you may want to troubleshoot by removing an object,
duplicating the slide and observing the results. Do this until you
find the offending object.
As to why it may continue on a different slide, could be that
the corrupted object has started to corrupt the entire movie.
Perhaps creating a new movie and importing one slide at a time from
the old would help to see where the problem lies.

Using unix 'diff' command to publish iweb to non .mac server

It is a common problem that you can't upload incremental changes to a website a web server that is not a .mac. Recently I found that the unix (shell) 'diff -qr' works nicely for this.
However I can't seem to get this to work in automator. That is where I need some help.
What I did :
I have an iweb website in my directory
Documents/website
I made a second directory where I store my uploaded version of the website:
Documents/websiteonserver
Using a shell script I want to compare the differences between these two directories using the diff command in a shell script. When I run 'diff -qr websiteonserver website' in a terminal window, it gives a nice overview of which files are changed and which ones are new. When workin with iWeb this saves me a lot of time uploading my homepage to a non .mac server. I can only upload the changed files, which is usually only a few. Diff does not look at timestamps (which are useless in the iweb case) but it actually looks into a file and with the -q option it stops when it finds a difference. With the -r added (-qr) it also looks through all subdirectories and compares files with the same name.
I like to automate this process so that my wife can update our family homepage with just one mouseclick (or as few as possible)
Unfortunately the diff command in automator gives an error, and there's no info on why it does this.
The commands I gave:
cd Documents
diff -qr websiteonserver website
(using PWD i verified that the path is correct like this). The only stumbling block for automator seems to be the diff command. Anybody any suggestions on this?
The next challenge is to take the diff output and use that to upload only changed/new files to a ftp server.
Any help / ideas are welcome

I used a single command as us specified. It really helped to add the path to the directories I wanted to compare. So now at least I got it two work partly:
It seems to work only if I compare two files. Comparing directories still does not work. Maybe diff generates some kind of error code when doing this??? It does not do that in the shell.
If I compare all files in directories + subdirectories , the workflow does not work. It seems as if it only accepts a single output line or so from the diff function. If there is more output (or maybe some newline character) the workflow halts. Very peculiar.
mmm.... I will try to make a shell script which I can run in automator. In the script file I will then generate a txt file. Then the automator can run the script and then it can open the resulting file in a text editor. See if that works.
mmm nope. I made a script like this:
#!/bin/bash
diff -qr ~/Documents/websiteon_theserver/ ~/Documents/website/ > ~/Documents/logfile.txt
I modified the atributes to executable and I could run it from the command line. The logfile.txt was created and has the correct info. I could not run it from automator...
I did copy the last line from the script into automator. And also there it does create the logfile, but the automator still says there was an error and stops.
maybe I should try Applescript, were it not that I am totally clueless on that language...

Upgrading harddrive and using Carbon Copy Cloner

Hi I'm planning to replace my internal harddrive on my old MacBook Pro (August 2007) running Leopard with the following harddrive:
Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420ASG - Hard drive - 500 GB - internal - 2.5" - SATA-300 - 7200 rpm - buffer: 16 MB
Is it fully compatible? Also, this ST9500420AS "G" model is said to have its own G-Force sensor. How does it all work out with MacBook Pro's sudden motion sensor?
Finally, if I use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my old harddrive onto my new harddrive, how can I solve the problem of the "etc", "tmp" and "var" recurring folder problem without the use of the Mac OS X Installation Disc (since I've lost it)?

Take a look at a site which has reviews, such as newegg, tomshardware, xlr8yourmac.com. In my mind, Seagates seem to have gone downhill and quite a few people have posted here with compatibility issues.The WD 640GB also seems to have more than its fair share of problems, although I don't believe the 500 shares those issues. After reviewing tests at tomshardware, I chose a 7200 Hitachi 500GB, which was at or near the top in nearly all categories, and has very good user reviews at newegg. I've yet to choose a 2.5" SATA external enclosure (with the number of enclosures around the house, it's hard to believe I don't have one yet, but I guess not), so have not run it yet.

Copying Reusable Module Component by using extended copy

I created a new Application System (say B) in the RON and copied a Reusable Module Component from Application System A into B, by using extended copy.
THE PROBLEM: the copied component is still referencing to the table in application system A instead of B. I would like that the table is referencing to the table in application system B.
Other module components I copied (non reusable) are referencing to tables in
application system B.
What's going wrong?

(You posted a new question as a answer to my question! )
The default username/password, which is created by using the repository install script, is REPOS_MANAGER/MANAGER. With this username/password you can access the Repository Admin Utility and create new Designer/Repository users. These users must be existing database users.
Warning: 8i personal Edition is not certified against Designer, that means there may appear problems. (e.g. generating Forms doesn't work). You better can install 8.1.7 Or 9i enterprise edition.
