Using Sony DRX-710UL DVD/CD RW DL Drive with my iMac

Please, god please, if anyone can please help me utililize this new Sony external optical drive I got from my sister I would seriously appreciate it. I have hooked it up via firewire and my iMac can acknowledge discs put in it and their icons appear on my desktop so it seems there is hope. I put in a DVD today that had a couple hundred mp3 files on it and I dragged the dvd icon over the iTunes and dropped them in. The drive then began to hum like normal and the iTunes did all the normal stuff as if I was using my own built-in optical scanner but at the end of the process I got a crappy error message and I checked and not one file had successfully copied over! I am way out of cash so I really need to make this thing work for me. Incidentally, the built in scanner burnt out/died last week which is why I am now trying to make this work.

Okay, I'll try it tomorrow. But in your estimation, will this drive be able to replace my dead internal drive? I know that a more modern external optical drive would work better with my computer but this one was free just sitting, never used, new in the box in my sister's garage and I got no money right now but with tons off stuff to get done that will involve a functioning drive.

  • Cannot get iMac or Roxio Toast10 to recognise my Sony DRX-510UL DVD burner

Hello, Firstly, I am not very good with Mac, Can someone please lend me a hand?
I would like to use my Sony DRX-510UL DVD +- R/+- RW burner, but i cannot find the driver that is compatible with Mac. I read this review it suggested that Roxio was software that would do the job... http://www.emedialive.com/Articles/ReadArticle.aspx?ArticleID=7972
I have installed Toast 10 & neither Mac or Toast recognise the Sony burner that is connected via USB port on the back of the iMac.
I still have the original software disc for the Sony burner but of course it is written for PC.
Can anyone help me find a compatible Sony DRX 510UL driver for Mac? Is that what i need?
    Kind regards
    Glen

Your network configuration shouldn't be relevant to the problem. It may be the problem is related to the particular enclosure or to the USB cable.
Open System Profiler and see if the drive is registering when it's connected. It would appear in the ATA and Disc Burning sections. If it doesn't register in System Profiler then there's a problem with the drive or you have a corrupted system installation. If it does register then open Disk Utility, put a disc in the drive and see if DU lists it. If you have a DVD with data on it, then insert it and see if it mounts on the Desktop.

  • Can i use SONY DRX-830UL-T with iMac 27

Can I use my Sony dual layer DVD/CD RW driver (model DRX-830ULT-T) with my new iMac 27 ? It has USB and both FW400 regular and micro connection. The iMac came with Lightening and USB3.
    Thanks,

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You should be able to use this optical drive with USB. You can also connect it by FireWire 400, but you will have to buy a Thunderbolt to FireWire 800 adaptor and a FireWire 400 to 800 cable

  • Problems using SONY 810UL/T dvd writer with ibook

    Hi All,
I'm having trouble using the above drive with my dual USB on 10.3.9 and was wondering if anyone else may have a solution to this. The os doesn't seem to recognize memorex16X DVD+R discs (i'm not sure if this is a disc issue or a drive issue but..see later) i.e. it doesn't show up on the desktop (I've tried this with multiple discs). Then when I try to open the tray using the button on the burner, nothing happens. So I do a disktool -e disk2 to eject the disk. I insert the disk again but holding down optioncmdI while inserting the disc ala article 30878 (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30878). A window pops up: You inserted a blank DVD. Choose what to do from the pop-up menu. I press ok, the disk ejects and I get message: This disc could not be used because the disc drive is not supported. (Error code 0x80020025). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

    Hi Tah.
    Two suggestions:
    1) Avoid Memorex discs if possible. I dn't know how they go in the Sony burners, but users of Panasonic (Matshita) and Pioneer drives I know have had problems with them.
    2) See if Patchburn helps - see http://www.patchburn.de/download.html
Patchburn gets many third party burners running which are otherwise not supported by Apple. In your case you will need the Panther version , of course.
    Cheers

  • Using external hard drive with both iMac and PC

I own an old Dell PC and an iBook, and will soon replace the Dell with an iMac.
I recently bought a 250GB Western Digital external hard drive to back up my data. I would like to use this hard drive to back up all of the files that are on the PC (which I will soon be getting rid of) and also use it for backing up the files on the iBook and, when it arrives, the iMac. In other words, neatly back up all my info onto the back-up drive.
My question is this: can I do this? If not, what is the best way to consolidate all of the data from all of these computers into one place? Will the fact that some data comes from a PC and some from a Mac be a problem? Can you move back-up drives fromone computer to another? The photos on my PC are saved in Picasa, whereas the photos on the iBook are in iTunes. My iPod music files are all on the PC in iTunes.
Any advice about backing all this stuff up in a user friendly way would be greatly appreciated.
By the way, I have heard that there are ways to reformat external drives, to partition them, and to "raid" them. Can someone explain what this all means?
    Thanks.
    iBook G4

    Hello,
Your best option would be to store the files from your PC on the drive with the drive in the FAT32 format. Then, copy the files to your Mac's Internal hard drive.
Now, once the files are stored safely on your Mac's internal hard drive, you can safely reformat the external drive as a Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) drive. That will be the best format to use for long-term purposes with your Mac.
Many OS X file types (such as many PKG files) cannot be stored / written to a FAT32 volume. So, a FAT32 drive would not be suitable for backing-up an entire OS X hard drive (or even many of the system updates that you might download).
So, that's how I'd do it. Use the drive as a FAT32 just long enough to get the files moved to your Mac.
Once the drive is re-formatted in the Native Mac format, then you could copy the files back to it, and any other Mac files that you wanted to back-up to it for safe-keeping.
Personally, I would re-partition it in at least two pieces on the Mac. One to hold data / personal files for safe-keeping, and a second bootable partition for a full system / OS X backup.
You can read a bit more about this in some of my previous discussions here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2536703&#2536703
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2597825&#2597825
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2632566&#2632566
Read through each of those three discussions and you'll see how they all come together and provide you with a good solution for backing-up your hard drive.
I hope you don't mind my linking you to those other discussions, but it just seemed more practical than re-typing what I had already said all over again
Also, if you are getting one of the new Intel iMac systems, and you want to be able to create a bootable backup as described in those posts, be sure to format your external hard drive using the new GUID format. That will provide you with the best solution.
    I hope this helps.

  • My bluetooth keyboard (Macnus 3.0) is recognised by my iMac but will  not pair?  I have paired it with my iPad using code 8310 but it still will not pair with my iMac.  Can someone help please?

My bluetooth keyboard (Macnus brand - bought recently in Thailand)(similar to Mac small keyboard) will pair with my iPad using code 8310,and is recognized by my iMac but will not pair?
There are very scant instructions with the keyboard and no mention of any code (the code was prompted by my iPad).
I have followed the instructions but it still will not pair with my iMac!
    Can anyone help please?
My iMac is 20 inch  Mid 2007 OSX10.9.1 4GB RAM

Hi All, thank you for you suggestions.  I have been unable to find any website for the maker, but have looked at several Thai/cambodian sites incl <http://www.buycoms.com/Article/8435/index.asp>  which mentions the keyboard being suitable for tablet or windows.  No mention of iMac!  although the box is branded to indicate Mac compatable.
I'm thinking that maybe it just will not pair with an iMac.
Ill keep looking for the maker website, which might come on later in the future? maybe?
    thanks again.

  • I want to use my Personal Laserwriter, but it won't work with my imac

I have a personal laserwriter printer. It work great with my older mac - Performa 580CD. However when I tried setting it up with my imac - using a MacOS 9.X driver and usb-serial adaptor - it only works with OS 9.x softeware.
So I have a laser printer that I cannot use. I'd like to get it up and running for my MacBoo Pro, too. Any advice?

The personal LaserWriter NTR and the Personal LaserWriter 320 are Postscript level 2 printers that can run with the built-in Mac OS X Drivers.
What is missing is a way to make the connection to recent machines that do not have a Printer/Modem/LocalTalk port. You can use the Mac's Ethernet port to carry AppleTalk packets (in addition to the standard TCP/IP packets) and use a converter to bridge from Ethernet to LocalTalk.
Two converters are available on the used market: The Farallon EtherMac iPrint LT and the Asante Asantetalk. The Asante may also be available new, but at a cost near US$100 new, you could get a more capable used Ethernet-capable printer for the same money.
If you have an older Mac that has a Printer/Modem/LocalTalk port and an Ethernet port and is still running OS 9 or earlier, you can download a package called LocalTalk Bridge to run in the background and do the conversion.
The other Personal LaserWriters would require a bridge AND a third-party driver.

  • Can I use Time Capsule to serve as an external drive with two different iMacs?

I want to be able to set up Time Capsule to serve as a backup drive for my iMac, as well as my wife's iMac.
So that we don't have to use two seperate back-up drives on each computer.
    Is this possible?

The following quote is from: https://www.apple.com/airport-time-capsule/
Have multiple Mac computers in your home or office? AirPort Time Capsule can back up and store files for each Mac on your wireless network. No longer do you have to attach an external drive to each Mac every time you want to back up. AirPort Time Capsule spares you the work. Your computers are always backed up — automatically and wirelessly.

  • How to restore machine using a TM backup on a usb hard drive from older imac to a brand new iMac?

My imac (the one that had a superdrive in it), had a broken superdrive and was sent for repair. Whilst being "repaired" the screen was broken. I now have a brand new imac albeit without a dvd drive. My question is how to I restore my the old TM back up which had been made to an external usb hard drive to the new imac. Help files say that I should not restore from a TM file to a different machine and that I should use migration assistant. Whilst I can see the external usb drive in TM it is not being recognised in Migration assistant when I click on back up from a TM backup on another machine or disk.
    Any ideas?
Just noticed that this new machine is running OSX 10.8.4  the broken imac was on mavericks

This is very simple first run Software Update on the new machine and get your machine upgraded to the most recent version of Mountain Lion 10.8.5. Install all other software updates Apple recommends in Software Update. Then care fully read Pondini's guide on using Migration Assistant located at:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html
Your migrated data will be in a new account, to access it log into the new account.
Also DO NOT repeat DO NOTuse Wi-Fi to migrate data, if your TM backup drive uses USB, then connect it via USB and follow the on-screen instructions as described in Pondini's guide.

  • Can I use any SATA hard drive with an iMac?

Hi, I'm a PC user from birth, and want to purchase an iMac, but the 500gb-1tb isn't enough storage for what I currently have on my PC (I have 4x 250gb hard drives, plus I'd need more room for the Mac OS). My question is, can I use any HD in the iMac, or does it have to be a "mac" hard drive? Also, can I hook up any external hd's? If this is the case, I'll buy 5-10 external enclosures for my hd's and build a custom box for them all. (Or put it in a slower PC I have, and run as a server, as I have to sell my good PC to afford a iMac)

My iMac reports its internal HD as 'WD3200AAJS' (WesternDigital Caviar SE line),
so it appears to be a standard form-factor HD with a standard SATA interface.

  • Using my MacPro to install on a hard drive for an iMac?

I doubt this it the proper place for this, but don't know where I should be.    My friend has an iMac with Snow Leopard that needs a new hard drive. He wants me to re-install his OS X and software for him. Since he lives miles away he is sending the new hard drive as well as the software for the install. Is it possible for me to install the hard drive in my MacPro then send it back to him and still have it work in his iMac? (The new hard drive would be installed in his iMac.)
If this will not work, can you suggest the proper way of going about it without using his computer?

Yes, you should be able to help him out. Be sure to prep the new drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X. You can restore his software after installation. If he sends his software on another hard drive, then you can use the Setup Assistant to restore from his backup.

  • Can't use flash drive with new iMac

We are new Mac users.  My husband downloaded a zip file of aviation charts.  He needs to transfer the zip file to a flash drive and then to a portable device so that he can use the charts when he flies.  We plugged in a flash drive, but it doesn't show up on the desktop or anywhere else.  We have looked everywhere on the system.  What are we doing wrong?  Thanks for your help!

Make sure you have prefs set to show external storage devices on the Desktop and in the Sidebar. To set that, go to Finder's Preferences (Preferences in the Finder menu).
On the General tab in Finder Preferences, checkmark the item "External disks" near the top.
On the Sidebar tab in Finder Preferences, checkmark the item "External disks" under Devices.
You may also need to format the drive before you can use it. You can use Disk Utility to do that (Applications folder > Utilities > Disk Utility).

Yep. I'm looking for a compatible drive as well.
Any suggestions on a usable superdrive or even blu-ray that will work in my 20" 2.4 GHz mid-'07 iMac?
There's got to be someone here who can give a pointer or two? I see a superdrive at OWC for G5 iMacs, but no word on if it's compatible with the Intels.
