Using Soundfonts

Hey, I'm working with soundfonts with my midi files in Sonar 4 but I have a couple of questions...I guess maybe about soundfonts in general. Can you modify them? I mean, Sonar won't let me add reverb or an echo to soundfonts, which is bad if you're using a couple different soundfonts together and one has more echo than the others...I want to even them all out so they have about the same echo.
What can and can't you do with soundfonts in terms of editing and/or modifying them? Also, if anyone has any other advice on how to make my midi files sound realistic rather than generic, let me know. I thought soundfonts was a good solution to at least try.
Sorry if it's confusing but thanks.

Moonwalk,
To get Reverb and Chorus in your SoundFonts, click the "Effects" tab at the bottom-left of your Sonar screen, and you should be able to adjust both settings. To make sure they "stick", go to the "Options" menu and select "Project". Click the "MIDI Out" tab and un-check the box that says "Zero controllers when play stops".
Let me know if this helps. BTW, if adjusting the reverb/chorus sliders has no effect, you will need to set up an EAX preset to use when composing with MIDI. Here are the steps I recommend:
1. Open up EAX Control Panel (via AudioHQ or otherwise).
2. Make sure the "Master" tab is selected.
3. Select "ENV" from the first drop-down menu under "Audio Effects" (if applicable).
4. Select "Concert Hall" from the second drop-down menu under "Audio Effects".
5. In the effect type window, click on "Reverb".
6. Using the slider at the bottom of the screen, set the reverb amount to -6.0 dB or higher.
7. In the effect type window, click on "Chorus", then click the "Parameters..." button below.
8. Change the following parameter values:
LFO Rate: 0.56 Hz
LFO Depth: 10.00 %
9. Highlight "Default Chorus" from the drop-down window, and type in the new name: "Warm Chorus".
10. Click the little disk icon to the right to save the effect.
11. Click "OK".
12. Using the slider at the bottom of the screen, set the chorus amount to -6.0 dB or higher.
13. Select the "Source" tab, and remove the reverb and chorus from any source that you don't want to be effected such as "Wave/MP3" or "CD Digital" (do this by selecting each menu option and dragging the reverb and chorus sliders all the way to the left). If you don't do this, your normal wave and music playback will sound echo-ey. Do not drag the sliders to the left for the "MIDI" menu option, if it shows up on your system.
14. Highlight "Concert Hall" from the second drop-down menu, and type in a new name: "MIDI Playback".
15. Click the little disk icon to the right to save the preset.
Please be aware that this custom EAX preset will kill EAX effects in games, so you should always select "No effects" from the menu before playing a game that uses EAX.

  • Trouble using SoundFonts

I just purchased the SL Industrial Sample Set in the SoundFont format from Smart Loops. I have a Mac computer running OSX 10.4, and GarageBand 2. I unzipped the files using Stuffit Expander. The SF2 file and the .MAP file both showed up as Unix Executable files (the icons were dark gray with the word "exec" in green computery letters). I placed the SF2 file in the Library/Audio/Sounds/Banks folder. In GarageBand I changed the Generator to DLSMusicDevice, then clicked on the pencil icon. I clicked on the Sound Bank and selected SL Industrial Kit, but for some reason it bounced right back to Quicktime Music Synthesizer. I closed the window, but when I reopened it the Sound Bank had changed to SL Industrial Kit anyway.
Now it just won't make a sound.
I tried to access it using SoundFont Synth, but when I selected SL Industrial Kit it caused GarageBand to crash.
Am I doing something wrong? Did I miss a step? Did I download the wrong format? Did I just waste thirty bucks?
Any help at all would be appreciated! Thanks!

I have the same problem and have found at least two other posts on this:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12805072#12805072
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/8086601#8086601
None of these posts have any answers, which leads me to believe that this is a fault with GarageBand. Anyone else have this problem? Why can't Apple fix it after numerous posts?
    Thanx.

  • Unable to use soundfonts correctly on Leopard.

    Hello here,
I use Quicktime and some quicktime based applications to convert my MIDI audio files to AIFF or Mp3 audio files, and I use a free, high quality soundfont such as the following:
    http://www.geocities.jp/shansoundfont/
everything worked great on Tiger, but now I am on Leopard and I am unable to correctly convert piano MIDI files because the sustain is always on. The problems seems to be present only when I use that soundfont. I'd like to be able to use the same soundfont on Leopard since that's of great high quality!
Any idea? Thank you in advance for any tip or thoughts.
    Best,
    Fabrizio

  • Using Soundfonts with Quicktime

The soundfont loads in to "System Preferences/Quicktime/Advanced-Tab/Default Synthesizer" Menu.
It connects and works but with "too much reverb" I am connecting to notation software. The reverb is not coming from the notation software.
Does anyone know if this can be shut down? Turned off, etc.
    Thanks in advance.

QuickTime version 10.3 found in Mavericks drops support for dozens of legacy formats and codecs.
The same files will work in the free version of QuickTime Player 7 without the need of a Pro upgrade.

  • SoundFonts - small problem. Please help me because this is very important to

Hello everyone. I have just upgraded from a SoundBlaster Audigy, to a SoundBlaster X-Fi Music edition.
I have a collection of soundfonts which I used to use on my Audigy. They worked fine. Now that I'm using the X-Fi, they all work well, apart from one, and the one that doesn't work is my most used, most important soundfont.
    Description of problem:
When I run my midi file, it starts playing the music using the new soundfont, but after about 0 seconds or so, the sound stops - even though the music is still playing. I then can occasionally hear a note or two, but its no longer playing properly. All my other soundfonts work perfectly, so I really dont understand why this one would cause troubles. They are all .SF2 files.
    Other Information:
) I am using "SoundFont Bank Manager" to load the soundfonts. They all work great apart from the main one I want to use. It worked fine on my Audigy. The Cache part says 7.3mb Used/ 229.8mb Free.
    2) I am on Windows XP Professional - Service pack 2.
    3) The rest of my computer is very powerful. Its a core2duo, 2gig of RAM, 320gig seagate barracuda hard dri've etc. Regularly defragged.
    4) I have the latest soundcard drivers (And direct X, video drivers, bios drivers, etc.).
    5) I have no other problems with the computer.
    6) My Midi program is Guitar Pro, which plays special midi files. It is set up properly, and it plays everything perfectly - using all my soundfonts, except the one I most want to use..
Please help me get this working. It is very important to me, and I need to get it working as soon as possible. I'll keep searching this thread incase I need to give any more information.
Thanks in advance.Message Edited by acrobat on 02-09-200705:0 AM

Why do you have two threads dealing with the exact same issue. That makes it confusing and hard to follow your issue to help you.
Who is your carrier, I asked in the other thread?
Have you tried YOUR sim card in another device, what happens?

  • Re: soundfont synth. what actually does it do and how does it do it?

ive got 100 sf2.s and love them. i save them as midi software instruments if i want them to become part of my armentarium. What is this soundfont synth i seem to lack?
If it is an AU and placed in the same folder with my sf2's what is it going to enable me to do? Please be specific, basic, instructive and kind. ( if you have experience with it) Does it improve anything?

So, what would one want to use to use Soundfont on an
Intel Mac (new Macbook w/512 ram).
You don't need anything extra to use a SoundFont on an intel Mac. SF2s are simply data files, any machine running any software on any platform can use a SoundFont if it was designed to do so (and GarageBand is).
Currently to access alt banks, when using an intel Mac, you'd have to use a MIDI keyboard that allows you to send the commands to change banks. The SoundFont itself, will still work fine even without a MIDI keyboard.

  • No soundfont capability - why does my creative software seem incomple

    Hello,
I want to use soundfonts, but I have no software for this. I checked the user guide for my card, and the software on the guide looks completely different from my software. I have no audio hq or anything like that. I have searched forums, knowledge base, etc. and have found no answer.
My card is the SBli've Digital that came with my Dell computer. Is this card limited in some way? I am running XP.
    Please help!

I had the same problem and ended up buying a retail card, but maybe someone knows another way.

  • Soundfonts in Logic

    Hi!
I'm having some troubles using soundfonts in Logic Pro 7.2.
I've tried to setup a Quicktime Synth, it works if you use the Default Synthesizer.
But when I change the soundfont it still uses the sounds of the Default Synthesizer.
    What is wrong?
And: Is there another way to use soundfonts?
    tnx
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Don't use the Quicktime Synth. Use the EXS24. It will load and convert SoundFonts.

  • Can Logic Pro work with soundfont (sf2) files?

Just curious. I have Garageband and the DLS Music Player has no way to change banks or presets for downloaded sf2 files except by sending a "program change" event from a midi controller. Can logic pro do that? I.e., if I load an sf2 file, can it use different banks and presets within that sf2 file, or is it limited to only the very first of each like Garageband?

Oh, I see, you don't have Logic yet - well, what I meant was that, once you've got your sf2 files into the EXS, just have a track for each different sound (open up an EXS24 on each track). If you need to use a lot of tracks, you can use Logic's 'Bounce in Place' feature, which instantly creates an audio file for you from the software instrument region you've created for any particular sound, so you don't need to think about banks of presets or program changes etc..
Logic comes with a vast array of software instruments and presets for them, along with a huge number of loops, if that's your thing - you may well find that good quality sounds that you want are already there and you won't need to use soundfont files anyway. If you've been using Garageband and want to take your work further, Logic is probably the next, well, logical step.

  • SoundFont Combabil

I' d like to know if the new Audigy 2 Soundcards also support Soundfont und Soundfont 2 Soundbanks.
I have a very old Guillemot 64 Pro (ISA), with some nice soundbanks (which i can transform in SoundFont), and I 'd like to have a new PCI Soundcard.

    Maede,
The Audigy 2 and Audigy 2 ZS lines of cards support Soundfont and 2. You can use Soundfont Bank Manager to load them.

  • Creating waves from Soundfont with WaveStu

I'm trying to create some sound effects using SoundFont. How do I record and save them in wav format? I tried recording with WaveStudio, but it doesn't record anything I play in SoundFont. Seems like this should be a simple, straightforward task, but I'm not getting it. The instructions don't cover this. For that matter, how to I record any wave data from my pc using WaveStudio besides music?

You can draw by hand whatever impulses responses you want in the digital domain. As to whether they will faithfully replicate any of the "famous" reverb trails that some libraries go to great lengths to capture is doubtful I think, though it would be interesting to do listening tests to compare them. But given the sensitivity of the ear in the analog domain, the complex nature of impulse responses that are well cpatured from complex acoustic environments, and what you can draw with your hand - I would bet that no IR vendor is losing any money to someone trying to replicate the impulse response of the Vienna Philharmonic's hall with the pencil tool in Logic.

  • SoundFont sf2 files and Logic Pro 7

Does anyone know if Logic Pro 7 can access and use SoundFont sf2 files? If so, how can they be accessed? Is it as simple as assigning these files via an instrument file track?

According to users on the Logic forum here, Logic Pro 7.2 and above (the Universal Binary release of Logic) works very well on Intel Mac. Anything below 7.2 is PowerPC only, and will work very poorly on an Intel Mac, if it works at all.

  • I bougth the sf2 program change for garagaband, but what is it exactly and how do I make it work?

I couldn't find out what exactly the sf2 program change is, but it seemed nice, so I bought it, hoping that it would explain itself when installed. It hasn't. I did hope that it would give me some more midi instruments, and it seems like it should, but how to get them into garaband (10.0.2)?
This thread seems to explain it: How to do use Soundfonts (.sf2 files) in GarageBand 10?
It says I can add "audio unit plugins" to a track. Now I don't know what an audio unit plugin is, but I assume that it is a confusing word for a sound, and that it refers specifically to the sf2 sounds. I got as far as the smart control inspector but then "Click an empty part of the Audio Units area, choose Audio Units, then choose a plug-in from the submenu." What is the audion units area? I have clicked the empty part of whatever I could find here, but there is no submenu anywhere.
Is there anybody out there who could give a really basic explanation of what it is that I have purchased and how I can make it work? I would really apreciate it.
    Ahston

I got a bit further. I found the submenu and I am able to load a default instrument. But I cannot change that instrument to any other.

  • GM MIDI Synth other than QuickTime?

    Hi~ guys~
    I'm just wondering
if we can find any GM MIDI Synths other than QuickTime synth to use in Logic Pro 8.
    (not the external hardware synths)
if there are some,,, could you let me know what they are??
    thanks~

You can use SoundFont libraries (they are free).
    Search for Airfont (76Mb), FluidR3 (141.5Mb), SGM-180 (175Mb).
Download them (or their updated versions), uncompress with SFarkXT (http://melodymachine.com/) and place them in:
    /Library/Audio/Sounds/Banks
Then you will be able to choose which one to use as a default QuickTime synth or to use into Logic.
    cheers
