Using stock photos in photoshop, resolution, size

Hi. In PS CS4 on XP.
I wanted to know what the deal is with stock photo sites.
I have copied a stock photo before from the web, pasted it in Photoshop (which would place it in a new document) & it would be whatever the size the photo is at 72 dpi.
I made a second blank document, letter size @300 dpi. I have dragged the stock photo onto the new document and it looks and prints clear (especially since I only needed the photo an inch by an inch)
I guess my question is, do I really need to purchase the medium or high resolution photos @300 dpi if needing a small size? Especially if they are $300-400??
What is wrong with the low resolution @72 dpi placed on a 300 dpi document (again, if needing a smaller size only).
Now, I have another concern.
I often will blow up images at 300dpi large (for trade show displays) and they are usually originally in the 6-8" range and are enlarged about 3x that size and do come out clear. I just was wondering I guess if you see a stock image thats for example these prices/sizes (below) can't you just get the medium one. Is there really a need to purchase the very high resolution images?:
  $ 325.00 USD
Medium resolution300 dpi | 4.7 x 7.1 in | 1415 x 2123 px
  $ 425.00 USD
High resolution300 dpi | 8.6 x 12.9 in | 2577 x 3867 px
  $ 475.00 USD
Very high resolution300 dpi | 11.3 x 17 in | 3399 x 5100 px
I just feel ripped off sometimes. That's part of why I use iStock, but they have the same options.
Thank you. just wondering!
(ps- not looking to steal web photos, but I often will use them as placeholders til deciding to buy)

hi Stella,
I work for a trade show display company and get asked about image resolution and "how much do I need" on a regular basis...
The short answer is, it depends...
You need as much as you need, and it depends on your standards, and what you want and are willing to accept.
When pictures get blown up (especially for trade show display graphics), if the image resolution isn't high enough, they will look pixelated (that is, you will see the individual pixels and the image will look "chunky")... We see this a lot when people pull low-resolution images off the web. To explain the problem, we made a page with pictures that show what happens (sometimes a picture is much easier to understand than a lot of words). You can see it here: ( http://www.pinnacledisplays.com/image-resolution.htm )
So you need your images to be high enough in image resolution so they won't pixelate.
But if the image is something like a sunset, then you can get away with much lower resolution.
But if it is a computer circuit board with fine detail, you need a LOT of resolution.
It also depends if you are going to look at it from a distance, or if you want to be able to look at it up close.
And it depends on if the photographer took a good (focused) picture in the first place!
As for your comment on istock versus more traditional stock photography websites, we generally recommend people look at istock first since the images are much less expensive there. But you won't always find what you want, and you want to make sure the image is high quality, so it's also good to look at the traditional sites, if your budget permits.
And if you really like the image and think you may use it for multiple things, it is better so spend the money for the highest resolution image rather than deciding you need it later and have to buy a second higher version image.
Hope some of my rambling comment helps! Steve

  • Can't use「edit photo in photoshop」in lightroom.

I using nikon D810,and after the adjustment of my JPG file.
When i clicked the 「edit in photoshop cc」,
    the application was coming out,
    but no photo was shown.
Lightroom also doesn't create a new TIFF file .
    Please help me.
I'm using Lightroom 5.6 and Photoshop CC in MAC and my file was JPG (size abt 5MB).

Thanks Rick.  I was away and didn't get a chance to respond to this right away.  For some reason, I think the issue had something to do with Lightroom 3.6.  Before anyone had responded to my question, I downloaded 3.3 and it was fine.  Thanks for your comment.

  • How can I use the bridge photos that are thumbnail size and place in Photoshop to edit, etc?  The size is too small, - how to enlarge without blur?

When I use Bridge to transfer a photo into Photoshop, the size is thumbnail.  It is too tiny to edit into Photoshop.  How to enlarge without blur?

That is the actual size of your image file. 48 x 38 is very small.
That is not a Bridge or Photoshop problem.
It is a very small image and you cannot enlarge it more than x 1.5.
If you want a large photo you must ask for it from whoever gave it to you, or take a bigger photo if it is yours.

  • I need to submit 2 photos  Image and resolution

I need to submit 2 photos
    Image and resolution & size : 4" x  6" @ 300 dpi  ( how do I do this from iphoto)
Is there a way to upload these so you both can see them and then we can pick out 2 from 354 pictures
I have to complete by May 4th

300 dpi is 300 Dots Per Inch
So by simple math  4x6" at 300 dpi is 1200 pixels by 1800 pixels
To do this in iPhoto your photo must be that size or larger. Crop to 4x6 and export with a custom size with the maximum dimension being 1800 pixels.

  • Adobe Stock Photos Stuck in Trash and Photoshop CS2 won't run!

Okay, I apparently did something stupid. I'm not even sure how this happened, but I realized that Adobe Stock Photos folder was sitting on my desktop (I'm using OS X 10.5.6). I don't know when this happened and I didn't think I needed it so I dragged it to the trash. NOW I cannot run any of my Adobe software (includes Photoshop CS2, Illustrator CS2 and GoLive CS2).
I can see the folder sitting in my trash, but it won't let me drag it back out. So, just as a test, I tried dragging out the one other file (.jpg) and I can't get that one either. I know this isn't a Mac forum, but I'm desparate and cannot find anything to help me.
Probably I am going to have to reinstall everything and (of course) I can't find my CDs!!! Please don't get angry if I'm asking the wrong question. I've done an internet search and I cannot find any solutions.
    Thanks, Anne

Adobe stock photos does not even exist anymore.
Have you tried deleting your trash? I have no Adobe stock Photos on my computer and everything works. try restarting the computer.

  • Can I use Organizer to change the .jpg size of all photos in a folder in one batch process?

We're using wa-a-ay too much disk space for a growing photo collection.   My daughter is a camera freak with four kids -- need I say more?
In my current test folder the sizes of the original photos range from 2.3 MB to 4.2 MB.  I picked one photo at random and printed the original and then three more, saved by PSE9 as .jpg files at maximum, middle, and minimum quality settings on plain letter-size paper, and again on 4x6 photo paper.  It takes a magnifying glass and a calibrated eyeball to detect a difference on the plain paper, and it's even more difficult on the photo paper.  I think I should relieve the pressure on the hard drive's capacity by reducing everything to a more reasonable size; after all, the minimum-quality print takes up less than one percent of the disk space as does the maximum-quality print.
I have a hunch that I can accomplish this in a batch process with Organizer, but that's all I have is the hunch -- not the know-how.   I would like someone to step me through the process.
I also expect a lecture on why I shouldn't do this.  Go for it; I'll listen.
    Thanks,  Bud

You are the one to judge... Will you regret it if you want to use some pictures with the original size and resolution at a later time?
Yes, you can use either the organizer or the 'process multiple files' command of the editor. But first you should think about two questions:
    - Are you ready to backup the full resolution and size files before the 'shrinking'? External USB drives with big capacities are available and affordable.
    - From what you are saying, the optimal size would be for files resized for 4" x 6" format at 300 ppi in jpeg quality 8 to 10.
Resizing from the Editor: Use the 'process multiple files' command and click the 'Same as source' button. I would not do it without a sound backup first... This can be done folder by folder.
Resizing from the Organizer : Use the 'Export' command. That command leaves the original and puts the resulting files in a new folder. The resulting files are NOT included in the catalog. This means that keeping your organization (categories, albums, tags...) will be tricky; same if you are using a folder organization system.
Another solution with a third party software such as Faststone photo resizer:
    - Absolutely do a full backup before
    - run the resizing options in the external software so that the files are resized without being moved. That replaces the originals.
    - If you are using the organizer, your organization will be kept, but the file sizes in the catalog and thumbnail databases will be wrong. You can regenerate the thumbnail cache by deleting the thumbs.5.cache file in your catalog folder; it will be automatically rebuilt.
That has worked for me in the past... no guarantee for you!

  • How do I fix a photo in photoshop that I had to re size and now it is distorted?

I had to re size a photo in photoshop cc for the lab.  It now is distorted and I don't know how to fix the problem.

An fyi for the future, when you change the size of a picture, make sure it is done on a copy, as the original is the only one that can get you back to the beginning when that time comes to start over. When you do alter the size, you can save as a psd format, to make it easier to undo, since the some tools like the crop tool can hide the unwanted portions of an image instead of deleting them. You can also make a copy of the layer as a new layer and hide one of the two layers, then you will have a starting point assuming you save the file in a format that support layers like psd or tiff.
Never save as a jpg for your own use, if possible. Use that format as a means to share to others as it does not support, layers, live type, transparency or objects. It is also a destructive format meaning each time you save, reopen, save again. The data is reduced by throwing out color information to a point where it is no longer a usable image if that process is repeated enough times.

  • I have Photoshop Elements 12 for both PC and Mac (I use both). I have a new camera, Nikon D810. I downloaded the latest version of Camera Raw, 8.8. My D810 is listed as a supported camera model. However, when I try to open a raw photo in Photoshop Element

I have Photoshop Elements 12 for both PC and Mac (I use both). I have a new camera, Nikon D810. I downloaded the latest version of Camera Raw, 8.8. My D810 is listed as a supported camera model. However, when I try to open a raw photo in Photoshop Elements, I keep getting the message "Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw. I have tried reinstalling Camera Raw many times, and have tried to open many different raw files in Elements, and still get the same error message. Please help.

How did you try to install ACR 8.8.  The only way I know of that works with Elements is to use the Updates Choice on the Help menu.
There are two charts supplied by Adobe that explain your RAW dilemma.  This one tells you what your camera needs:  http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html   This one tells you what version of software you need:  http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
In your case, the Nikon D810 needs Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 8.6 or Lightroom 5.6.  (Congratulations on buying a new camera!)
To get to that level with Photoshop Elements, you will need to replace your Photoshop Elements 12 with version 13.   Adobe caps ACR updates on version 12 at 8.5.
The most convenient way to get around it without spending any money is to use the FREE from Adobe DNG Converter.  Download and install it from here for FREE:  http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=5855&fileID=5890  Once it is installed you can convert your D810 raw files to an Adobe RAW version with the .DNG file extension that most, if not all, versions of the various Adobe software programs can use.  That includes old versions of Photoshop, Elements and Lightroom.  DNG converter can be used as the tool to move your files from your memory card to your computer, is efficient, will convert in batches and is completely lossless.  There is no risk of any image quality degradation or RAW functionality.

  • I suddenly cannot email photos from iphoto. I get a box that says "server does not recognize username or password". I now have to use regular email and cannot re-size my photos.

Suddenly I can no longer email photos directly via iphoto mail.  The box comes up that says "server does not recognize username or password".  I used to be able to re-size my photos before sending so that they jpeg or pixels were larger for publishing in newspapers or magazines, but I can no longer do that.  Apple tech support told me to change my iphoto "preferences" to using regular email to send.  But that does not allow me to re-size.  Is anyone else having this problem?  I don't know if there was an update that caused this or what?  Please help.

The box comes up that says "server does not recognize username or password".
That error message usually will pop up, when there is a conflict between the "From" setting for the mail account you are sending from and the selected outgoing mail server. Probably the outgoing Mail server is receiving a user name and password it does not understand. When the mail returns unsent, do you see the "Try again" panel with the option to select a different outgoing mail server?
If you do not see this panel, change the Mail "Preferences > General" to "If Outgoing server is unavailable: Show a list of alternate servers". This way, you will know, which server Mail is trying to send from.
Have you tried to set "From"  pop-up menu to one of your other email addresses?  If that works, change your settings in Mail to always send from this address. You can set this option in the Mail "Preferences > Composing: Send New Messages from". I have my "Send New Messages from" set to "iCloud". That is working best for me with iPhoto.

  • Using iphoto and editing multiple photos in photoshop

I set iphoto to edit my photos in photoshop. I tried to edit a group of photos at once, and it'll only open the first 4 pictures. Is there a reason I can't open more than the first 4 photos that I have selected? Is there a setting in photoshop I need to change that is preventing me from opening more photos?
    Thanks!

As Larry said that's a "limitation" of iPhoto. Report that to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html. I think you can go back to iPhoto and select another 4 photos and open them in PS with the original 4 still open.
    For what it's worth:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
