Using streamclip to make mpeg file

I created four movies using Fincal Cut Studio2 and then burned them to a DVD-R using iDVD 7.0.4.
The menu on the dvd offers the option of selecting any of the four movies.
I want to make one of the menu items into an mpeg format using Streamclip 1.9.2.
Is this possible? I have tried playing around with this and have not been successful. Can somebody tell me if this is possible and if so walk me through the steps to accomplish this?
Thanks,
Jill

There must be more than one VOB file? You need to convert the entire folder.
You need to convert the VOB files back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

  • PPT switcher- how to embed mpeg files in a Keynote presentation?

I used to take short mpeg files and embed them so they would run on a slide while I talked- it seems I can only attach iLife files.
Does this mean I have to import all the mpegs into iMovie and convert them into "sharable" formats to make them usable? I don't need to export them with PDFs or anything, just run them on the screen in class. I'm not even sure if I can import them- many are provided by textbook companies and may be protected somehow.
Once again, thanks in advance for any help!

If Quicktime can play it, you can import it.
If Quicktime can't currently play it, all you need is the codec for it, usually by downloading and installing:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/22923/perian
    and
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/17787/flip4mac-wmv-player
If you upgrade Quicktime to Pro you should be able to re-export any movie file into any other format, although that can be slow.
Usually it is better to use something like:

  • MPEG Streamclip Or Compressesor (To Make Mov Files Smaller Size)??

Hi there Ive always used MPEG Streamclip after I make mov files with Final Cut Pro to bring the file into MP4 format where its alot smaller (using 300k limit data rate) but for some reason after I make the file with Sony EX1 footage at 1920 x 1080 theres a severe quality loss where the transitions are really pixelated.

If you are converting hi-def using 300kbps I am surprised you can see any video at all!
    Even 3,000 is too slow.
5,000kbps can produce reasonable results but 10,000kbps is safer.
You can export your videos straight from FCP using QT Conversion. No need for any other app.

  • Compressor Or MPEG Streamclip To Make Files Smaller?

I currently use MPEG streamclip to make my mov files smaller and mp4 as it doesnt allow good quality MP4 exports from FCP and I was wondering what most use as Ive had trouble making the mp4 with XCam footage for a mov file from Streamclip as the quality is pixelated.

Time to read the docs for Compressor. You can use the inspector to see just what size of file to expect. Make sure you click on the compression setting of your clip...

  • How can I convert MPEG files (stored on a PC) to use in iMovie on my Macbook Pro?

How can I convert MPEG files (stored on a PC) to use in iMovie on my Macbook Pro?

Get a free app called MPEG Streamclip.
    Available here.
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
Drag your clip or clips into MPEG Streamclip. Then use FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME to export the clips in Apple Intermediate Codec.
Sometimes, MPEG2 clips also require that you install the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component. MPEG Streamclip will tell you if you need this. This is available from Apple for $20.

  • Could someone please recommend the best program to convert AVI and MPEG files for use (and exporting) into IMovie 11?

Hi - I understand I need to convert AVI and MPEG files for use within IMovie 11. I have one particular file that has a watermark stating "Created with Flip4Mac WMV Demo". Can someone please recommend the best program for a novice?  Thanks!

    Hi Susan,
It is no simpler converting vobs to mp4 than mpg (mpeg2).
There is *always* a loss of quality converting video from one lossy-compressed format to another, e.g. mpeg2 to mp4.
So, if you want to not lose any quality, then converting vobs to mpeg2 (mpg) is the thing to do (since there will be no video/audio re-compression), assuming Lr5 will accept them (sorry, but I do not know). example commands:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mpg
If Lr5 won't accept them, then you can convert to mp4 with minimal quality loss using a command like:
    Mac: ffmpeg -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
    Win: ffmbc -i myvideo.vob -sameq myvideo.mp4
You may need variations of these commands depending on encoding of vob.
Note: -i means -input-file; -sameq means -same-quality, as much as possible.
ffm... is smart enough to avoid re-encoding, if possible, when -sameq is used, and makes reasonable choices for audio/video codecs based on extension of output file.
Of course, you'll need to download/install ffm... program if not already on your machine, and execute commands in a terminal or command window.
Do keep us posted please .

  • NTSC to PAL - Export straight from FCP or use an mpeg file?

    I was reading this
    http://www.macworld.com/article/49306/2006/02/marchcreate.html
however it does not mention what to bring into compressor.
Should I export my ntsc sequence straight from FCP into compressor, or should I drag an ntsc mpeg file I aldeady made into compressor? Ive been trying the latter but can't do much as each step gives me the spinning beach ball for anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. Thanks much.

Yes, you should export directly from FCP Using Compressor. Exporting to a heavily compressed MPEG-file, and then converting that from NTSC to PAL makes no sense. You would want your video to go through as few conversions/generations as possible.

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I cannot open my File Maker Pro files. Can I use Numbers to open these files?

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I cannot open my File Maker Pro files. Can I use Numbers to open these files?

Numbers is a spreadsheet program and FileMaker is a database program, so you probably can't use Numbers to open them unless you had first exported them from FileMaker in a spreadsheet-compatible format.
If you upgraded from 10.6 Snow Leopard or earlier and your old copy of FileMaker won't open anymore, it might be a PowerPC application that is not compatible with 10.7 and later. If that is the case, to work with your FileMaker files you should upgrade your copy of FileMaker to the latest version, which seems to be FileMaker 12.

  • Using EVOM to transfer MPEG-2 files from camcorder to mac

I have a Sony Handycam and used EVOM to transfer the files (MPEG-2) to the mac iMovie.  The date and time the clip was imported is
being used to organize the clips, but I want the date and time the video was taken.  Is there a way to do this so that it automatically uses the original date and time the clip was taken?

The reason is that when I save the Imovie I just get one file with an Imovieproject extension, and that will not go into compressor. What do I need to do to get a valid file to be used by compressor.

I have inadvertently changed a file permission setting. When opening Aperture I get the following; "Aperture cannot access this library. To use this library make sure it's file permissions are set correctly". I am an old dude new to Mac OS. Looked in settings but have no idea how to allow file sharing to myself. I have been using Aperture actively for 6 weeks. I'm the only one using this Mac. What up?

    Back up all data now.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. You can demote it back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • Aperture cannot access this library" followed by "To use this library, make sure its file permissions are set correctly."

    Hi,
I am completely confused. I use aperture everyday and today when I tried to open it I got the following message " aperture cannot access this library" then it said to use this library , make sure its file permissions are set correctly"
So i read a bunch of posts and opened aperture while holding down option and command and repaired the file permissions.  it did nothing, when I tried to open aperture I received the same message.   So then i tried opening it while holding down just the option key. This brought up all of my libraries but when I chose the library i use daily the same message came up.
Does anyone know how to fix this and/ or why it is happening?
    Thank you

No idea how to check the format, not familiar with Drobo products. Does the drive show up in Disk Utility? If so you should be able to see how it is formatted there.
How long has this setup been in use?
Aperture libraries have to be on locally connected drives formatted as OS Extended as per Apple (see Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture for example). While Aperture may work with other setups there is always the possibility that the library will become unusable at any point in time with no warning.
Try to find out the format of the drive and post back. Maybe something can be done but from the error messages you are getting I'm thinking the best course of action will be to restore from backups onto a correctly formatted drive.
    regards
