Using subtitles to watermark a dvd

Hello Everyone,
i am trying to figure out a problem for a whole day already and cant get it done, so i will try my luck here in the hope someone can help out. We are burning an independent feature to DVD and want to watermark the film for copy protection, but encoded the whole film without a rendered in logo. So now we don't want to rerender the whole film with a watermark in it and tried to use a Subtitle in DVD studio pro to force display the subtitle and disable the remote buttons for Subtitle switching. Everything works great besides when you start to scan forward or backward on the disc. The movie starts finhe with the watermark in it and even when you skip to next chapters it stays in, but the moment you hit the scan forward button they dissapear and onlyshow back up if you skip to the next chapter. Any idea or help. I know its best to render the watermark into the original footage but we forgot, so maybe we can fix it this way.

I would personally go to the trouble of re-rendering it with the embedded watermark because it would be too easy for someone that really wanted to to take off the subtitle and steal your footage, which is what you're trying to prevent. It's up to you how important it is to you, but it seems almost counterproductive to take such an easily hackable "preventative measure."
Just something to consider. Though your audience may not be tech savvy enough to get around this, it's best to assume more knowledge than less on the part of the "bad-guys" when it comes to security.

Using an iMac to rip DVD?

Hi folks, can anyone help me out?
I have some old family VHS tapes and recently recorded them onto DVD-RW's, I though iMovie or Premier Pro or something would have allowed me to rip the content from the DVD-RW's but it doesn't seem to recognise the VOB files?
Can someone tell me is there a FREE programme out for mac I can use to simply rip the DVD with it's audio of course onto my mac so I can share the video files online? I've downloaded a few but they are either crap quality convertors or they all have watermarks or limitations.
I just need a simple program that will simply rip the dvd and convert it to a good quality video file? no fancy stuff and no watermarks etc?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:

which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:

For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

Unable To Use DVDSP4 Presets for HD-DVD in the H.264 Format

I recently prepared a 23 minute slide show using Fotomagico from high resolution Hasselblad slides scanned in at 1200 dpi. Within Fotomagico I rendered the Fotomagico slide show to Apple ProRes 422 HQ, took it into Final Cut Pro 6.03 and added an intro and closing section. I then sent this to Compressor and selected the 30 minute HD-DVD preset which uses mpeg2. All went fine with the encoding to mpeg2 and I got a successful build and format out of DVDSP4 after importing the resulting .m2v file into DVDSP4. However, while the disk plays back fine in my Mac Pro it plays back with stuttering (audio and video) on my Toshiba HD-A2 HD-DVD player. I used a Verbatim Datalife DVD+R, but several other discs from other manufactuers including a DVD-R disc showed the same problem.
Please note that I have the latest firmware on my Toshiba HD-A2 and I have successfully burned RL HD-DVD discs using my PC and Windows software (Ulead's DVD Movie Factory 6+) which play fine without stuttering on my HD-A2.
I then decided to send the project to Compressor and use the 60 minute HD-DVD preset that encodes to H.264. Once again Compressor successfully executed the encode of my 23 minute slide show and it plays fine in QuickTime or MPEG StreamClip. However, every time I try and import this .mov file encoded in H.264 using the Compressor preset for HD-DVD into DVDSP4, DVDSP4 brings it in to the assets folder, but after a couple of seconds DVDSP4 crashes. Using console I get a message that DVDSP4 quit unexpectedly due to a "segmentation fault".
I also tried to take the ProRes Fotomagic project in Final Cut Pro 6.02 and send it out with Quicktime Conversion using the H.264 codec. Again I have a file that plays fine in QT, but when I try and import this .mov file into DVDSP4, I get the message "imcompatible format".
In summary, I am completely frustrated after many many hours of work at trying to prepare an HD-DVD on red laser of my slide show in DVDSP4. I cannot figure out what I am doing wrong, and I would be most appreciative of any suggestions anyone may have.

Am I the only person who has ever tried to use the Presets in Compressor 3 for encoding HD-DVD disks? I would like to use these presets for burning HD-DVD's to standard red laser media as I have done on my PC. With the mpeg2 Preset I can get nothing but stuttering video when played back on my Toshiba HD-A2 and when I use Compressor 3 to encode with either of the H264 presets, the resulting .mov file causes DVDSP4 to crash when I import the file. Has no one else experienced this? Does anyone have any thoughts on addressing these issues other than to go back to working on my PC?

I've followed every possible instruction on every which website. The problem is when I boot to Install disc, I am unable to choose which hard drive I'd like to install the OS on. It says that it is unable to Install and automatically takes me to Restore and suggests that I restore to Time Machine backups. Any and all help is appreciated.

have you tried booting from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD that originally came in the box with your MacBook Pro? See if you can install its version of Mac OS X (either 10.4.9, 10.4.10, or 10.5.0, depending upon when it shipped from the factory) onto your external hard drive. If that works, boot from your external hard drive, run Software Update on it, and then try updating your external drive to 10.6.3 via the white Snow Leopard DVD.

I have a 2nd generation Apple TV and computer is a 2011 Macbook Pro. Processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7. Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3. Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB. Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63). Storage: about 500GB free out of 750GB.
I have a DVD player within my computer. Trying to play a movie from my computer to display onto my TV using my Apple TV airplay. But the airplay icon is not showing or giving the option to play a movie onto my TV.
I've installed all software updates and still I'm not able to have this functionality.
I assume this functionality exists where I can play a DVD on my computer, but watch it on my TV using my Apple TV, correct?

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). You can see which Mac you have and which operating system you are using by selecting 'About this Mac' from the Apple menu in the top left corner of your Mac and selecting the 'More Info' button.
AirPlay Mirroring from a Mac also requires a fairly robust network.
You may find a third party product that you can use instead of AirPlay.

I am trying to play these DVD's that I have purchased on a large screen Samsung Smart TV using my Apple TV. I get sound but no video. I suspect that they cannot be played using Apple TV. Kernal panics while using DVI output to watch DVDs

Hello all. I just got a new MacBook and LOVE it. The only problem is that when I use it to watch a DVD on my HDTV via DVI out and insert a dvd, I get the message that I need to manually restart my computer. This is the fresh factory installed copy of Leopard. When the computer restarts with the DVD in it, everything works perfectly. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks guys!

I just plugged in the MiniDVI/HDMI adapter cable and I got a really flickery TV, does this suggest graphics card issues? If so how to I run a diagnostics test on Mavericks if I don't have the boot DVD? Thanks!

The question of using system/software install CDs/DVDs on more than one machine is frequently asked.
So, FYI:
System software installation CDs/DVDs, that come with a particular Mac model, are hardware specific to that model, and not intended to be used on other Mac models. For instance, the CDs/DVDs that are shipped with an iMac are not to be used on an iBook or eMac.
And the "Tiger" DVDs that are shipped with any new Mac, also are not to be used on other Mac models.
If such an installation were possible, or somehow accomplished successfully, that action would constitute a violation of your license agreement, which limits installation to a single computer.
The "Single User Software License Agreement" can be found here Software License Agreement.
Similarly, any "Upgrade" CDs/DVDs for a particular Mac OS will ONLY work for that Mac & system. For example, if a new Mac that shipped with Jaguar/Panther, was purchased shortly before the release of Panther/Tiger, the user may have purchased "Upgrade" CDs/DVDs, for a lesser price than the full install set. These CDs/DVDs do not contain all of the necessary components for an independent installation of Panther or Tiger.
The license agreement applies to single user retail versions of system software. The "Panther" or "Tiger" boxed set, for example.

In order to install Lion you have to have Snow Leopard and then update to 10.6.8:

Personally I suggest that you stop at Snow Leopard. It still is the most efficient OS that Apple has devised and it still works great. Go to the Lions only if there are feature that you really need. There may be a price to pay in slower performance though.

Using purchased music in photo dvd.

Hello,
I have some music marked "*protected AAC*" and some marked "*Purchased AA..*" and I am not sure what this means.
However, I did find that I could only use "Purchased AA...." if I wanted to export the music to a dvd of photographs.
NOW, I don't seem to be able find the ability to purchase the right to use the music elsewhere. Can someone please tell me what I need to do to once more purchase this right????
I think it might have something to do with DRM which I don't understand nor know whether I need it or not!?

Protected means that the track has copy protection. Such tracks usually can be used in a DVD via iDVD if the version of iDVD you have is current, but problems often arise if the version of iDVD is older. If you continue to have problems, you might try asking in the iDVD forum.

Tracks purchased from the iTunes Store, whether copy-protected or not, are for your personal use only. If this DVD you're trying to create would be for your own use, that would be OK, but you would not be allowed to give it to anyone else (the same applies even to tracks imported from CD without acquiring a license from the record company specifically for the purpose).

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

No. iDVD produces standard definition video DVDs. All material is reduced to 640 x 480 resolution. You can query the iDVD forum for the workflow to get the optimal image quality in a video DVD.
