Using Superdrive on iMac with dead disply

Is there any way that I can use the Superdrive on myiMac FP until I can afford to get the display fixed? I just installed a new superdrive and would like to make sure it works, but since I have no display, I am not sure how to do this. I can connect to the iMac via home network or Firewire Target Drive. Also is there a way to access the system profiler of the iMac from my iBook using either network or target drive?

You can't burn discs over Target Disk Mode but you can connect your iMac to another display. Have a look at this user tip:

I am using a new imac with osx lion 10.7.5 and have just bought Apple iLife 11 on dvd so that I can install iWeb and iDVD, as macs no longer ship with these apps. When I click on install iLife I get a message saying "iLife.kpg was signed with an invalid certificate.
Next problem is that when moving through the installer and get to custom install, as I only want to install iDVD and iWeb, I am presented with the option to install iDVD, Sounds & Jingles and iWeb, but not sure what is going on with the other 3 options iLife Support etc, they seem to be greyed out but still look like they may install over the top of the newer versions already on my imac. Is it ok for me to just go ahead and hit install? Or do I have a problem?

Yep, just install iDVD (plus sounds and jingles) and iWeb if you want it (but note that iWeb apparently won't work if you upgrade to Mountain Lion).
Then use Software Update to get any late iDVD updates.

  • Using iMac with dead internal drive long term

I've got a friend with an iMac with a definitely dead internal HDD. Got it back running with an external and it seems to work. We also selected that external as the default start up in System Prefs.
I'm curious was to whether, however, he can just run it forever with that HDD inside. I'm not at his machine, but when working on it I saw some evidence that there were attempts to access it, from like mds for Spotlight, and so on. If it was one of mine I'd at least yank the drive, but he doesn't wanna pay to repair it and is quite content with the external. But we'd like to know if that wonky drive is gonna cause issues, or if there's a way through software to disable it forever.

Add it to Spotlight's Privacy prefPane to preclude indexing. That's all that needs doing.

  • Could I use iBook to upgrade iMac with dead CD/DVD drive?

I don't speak computer very well.......I was wondering if I could upgrade my old iMac by using the iBook as an external Hard drive. I tried using a firewire connection and holding down the T key. It worked for file transfer, but not upgrading the OS. Is it possible? I have the Tiger disc in the iBook.

    Yes, it should work.
You need the iMac to be the Target Disk in FireWire Target Disk Mode. This means holding down the T key on the iMac. Then start the Installation from the Tiger disc, selecting the iMac's hard drive (on the iBook's Desktop) as the drive for the installation.
If it is the Graphite iMac you are upgrading, be sure that the firmware is up-to-date.

  • 2nd iMac with dead pixels

Just curious if anyone else is having dead pixels (non-functional pixels, black) problems with their new iMacs. I own 4 LCDs and use two more at work and I don't have this problem with those displays. I am a web developer and graphic designer so I am a little picky when it comes to displays, but I just bought this iMac (11-30-07) and it is the second one (returned the first one) to have defective pixels. The first had a dead pixel in the top left area (right where I work in PSD), and the second has four scattered in the bottom area, and they seem to be popping up with regularity. The easiest fix is to buy a second high quality display and just use this iMac as a dual monitor setup . . . but then with that thinking, why didn't I just buy the Mac Pro? All-in-all, this is still a pretty decent machine. . . .

I to have recently purchased a 20" Intel Based iMac at my local Apple Store, after booting the beautiful computer up i noticed two small pixels where black. I plan on returning the computer to the Apple Store and getting a brand new one. And i know that a couple of pixels is tiny and nearly noticeable unless you look for it, then when you find it the thing just screams out at you, but considering the prices Apple charges i expect nothing but a perfect product and so should you.

  • Late 2009 imac with dead LCD; external monitor?

    Hello, all
I need some help.  The LCD on my late 2009 iMac has failed.  I took it into the Apple Store and they told me it was dead and it would be $500+ to replace it, which I do not have.
The machine is intact, however, other than that!  The Apple Store rep even told me that they tried it with an external monitor, to validate that the video card is working, and it worked fine.  Great news!
My question, however, is how do I get it to boot to an external monitor?
I have booted the mac in target disk mode, booted from that target disk on another mac, and changed the settings so that the display is mirrored onto a second monitor.  When I boot into the iMac, however, I get the Apple Logo and the "white screen of death" and the machine never finishes loading using the external monitor.  I need to know if there is some way to force it to use that monitor for the primary display.
Cheers all, and thanks for any help!

    Hello,
I'm wondering if boting from it's drive on the oother Mac didn't write some of the other Mac's Monitor info to it?
Instead of Mirroring, what if you make the external monitor the main one by dragging the Dock to it?
If you can ever get it to boot, this thread may be helpful if you want mirroing...

  • Second 27" iMac with dead pixels

I'm intrigued to see how many others have purchased the new 27" iMac's and have managed to get one without any dead pixels.
I am currently on my 2nd 27" iMac and both of them have a dead pixel right in the middle of the screen, first one was black, this second one is red.

btw, is there any dead pixel policy?
It's a fault just like any other type of fault. Your brand new iMac's pixels are all meant to be working. If you receive one where they clearly are not you are right to have it replaced. This is not a PC, it is a top of the range Apple product for which we expect and demand the highest quality. After all, we're paying top dollar (or £) for this level of build and design. Accept nothing less.
Actually, Apple considers one dead pixel 'within spec'.
However, if you've only just bought it, you can choose to return it for any reason within 14 days.

  • Using new 24" iMac with my PS3

Ok, my vizio was dropped - nuff said.
So, I want to you my PS3 in conjunction with the screen on the iMac, is this possible? I will not actually be using the computer's hard drive or ram or anything like that...just the screen. Do I need specific cables or what? Thanks in advance.

Check out www.elgato.com. I believe they make a product for this purpose.

  • Installing OS X on iMac with dead screen

    Here's a tricky one...
My friend has an iMac Intel Core 2 (it might be Intel Core 1, anyway it's an older white model...)
His screen died couple of months back, it's just black no power in it... So he's using a secondary monitor and everything is fine.
Except that he's still stuck in Tiger because he did not want to try to install a new OS with no screen... Understandable...
So how would I do this...
I could plug a second Mac and install Lion next month using firewire.
But when I'm going to start the iMac on first launch, It certainly won't default to the second display, there will be no way for me to setup de first steps blind...
    What are my options ?
Is there any command lines I could do via another computer, even if no users are created on the iMac yet ?
Maybe a way to modify the "system kernel" to auto switch to the second display on startup ?
    Thanks !

Does the "other mac" have to be the same iMac model or any Intel Mac would do ?
There must be system files that are different on installation depending on the machine... No ?
Maybe Apple installs all available drivers for all Mac's in the OS install...
    Thank you !

  • Can you use the new iMac with FCS.

This is one of those a friend of a friend of a friend told me this.  His friend, who shoots video that's shown on a local access channel, just bought the latest iMac.  I don't know what this person's set up is or what kind of equipment is, but he claims that he might have to upgrade his cameras because he can't import the footage.  I'm interested in investing in the new iMac but hesitate because I do a lot of amateur video work (weddings, birthday parties, etc.)  Anyone heard anything about this?  By the way, I use a two year old HD Sony video camera and use FCS 7.  All video is stored on an external hard drive.

The current 27" iMac's with Thunderbolt will run the whole suite of Final Cut Studio apps just fine.  The catch will be your external Scratch Drive.  Until Thunderbolt drives ship in a couple of months, you're stuck with FW800, which barely cuts it for serious HD work.  Thunderbolt will change that.
One option is to get the configuration that has both an SSD and a 1TB 7200rpm HDD drives in it.  The SSD would be your OS drive, the HDD your Scratch Drive.  That would work fine.
As for professionals, I teach them, guys from huge cable news networks, who've been using FCP since v.1.  I'm amazed how many of them walk away even after the 1st day of class with whole new workflows.  You never stop learning in any profession.  The day you do, you're out dated.
The model of Mac you use has nothing to do with your ability to import footage.  The version of FCP you use CAN affect that a great deal, though.
Specifically what make/model camera do you plan to be using for this work?  BTW, weddings and events are a very profitable niche profession.  I have friends who make good livings for years doing only that.

  • Can I use icloud on imac with snow leopard OS10.6.8

Err Can I use icloud with iMac OS snow leopard 10.6.8 ?

This page explains what you can do on Snow Leopard with an existing iCloud account.
    http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudSL.html
You cannot create an iCloud account on Snow Leopard.
In addition to SoHo Organizer, Fruux syncs Calendars, Tasks and Contacts between a wide variety of devices (not using the iCloud server) including Snow Leopard and above, Windows Outlook and Thunderbird, Linux Thunderbird, and iOS and Android devices - see their compatibility chart(click the blue 'i' for a caveat about Snow Leopard). It's free for one user, two shares, two devices; above that pricing starts at $20 per month. I haven't tried this.

  • 24" iMac with dead pixels

I haven't seen any threads about this so I figured I'd give it a go and see how many others have dead pixels. My first 24" that I took home from the Apple store had one single, almost not noticeable, dead pixel. Most LCD manufactures will not warranty anything less than 6 dead pixels. It was near the center of the screen and after forking out $2400 I wanted a perfect LCD with no dead pixels. So I took it back the next day and luckily for me the manager at the Apple store let me exchange it. I took it out of the box in the store, booted it to check it out and didn't find any dead pixels. 3 or 4 days later I found a dead pixel. Bright blue near the bottom. You can only see it on a black screen. So I told myself that I would just deal with it until the next day I found a second dead pixel. So now I have 2 dead pixels and am pondering whether I should take it back or not..

    Hello,
'Stuck' pixels, i.e. those that are stuck at a particular colour may sometimes be cleared by simply rapidly changing the colours behind them.

  • Simple CD Rom for iMac with Dead one

Is there a simple CD Rom that I can plug externally into my iMac DV+ 450? Few are on the market I know. So if I go with a CD burner or even DVD burner, what are the chances that a model will work with my Mac running system 9 even if the box doesn't say so.
Just trying to get another little while out of otherwise smooth running iMac(s) here at a school while the CD Rom drives begin to break down.
    All input is appreciated.
iMac DV+ (Sage)   Mac OS 9.2.x

For an external optical drive, you'd want to get one that goes through the Firewire port, since the USB 1.1 ports on G3 iMacs are very slow. If you find an external drive with Firewire, it will probably work with Macs because most of the computers out there with Firewire are Macs. I'd still check the specs to ensure they work. Whether they will work with Mac OS 9, that's another separate question.
Also, shopping at a Mac specialist vendor (such as OWC www.macsales.com) will probably increase your odds of finding a compatible product.

  • Imac (with dead screen) file transfer to macbook

    Hello
I recently bought a replacement macbook. my imac's screen one night slanted diagonally and froze and when turned off and on the screen never came back. i tried hooking up external monitors to see if it was just a screen problem, unfortunately no. based on different tests and the type of imac i believe that the files are still safe and secure, the computer turns on fine but i have no way of seeing the folders and files, like the migration assistant. i have no idea what to do and i would prefer to do it myself than have apple charge me money for it.
    thanks

I'm not sure what you want but if you want to transfer the files off the imac you should be able to use migration assistant. reboot the imac and hold "t" at the chime. this will boot it in target mode. connect it to the new macbook and start migration assistant on the macbook (it's in /Applications/Utilities). this will let you transfer user data and applications to the macbook.

  • New iMac with dead pixels

I just got a brand new 21.5 iMac it has 2 dead pixels, is this normal what's the acceptable number of dead pixels?

Here is an Apple KB article pertaining to dead pixels. It does not list a number that is acceptable or not.
But, Apple has a 90 day return policy, unless I believe you have a custom configuration. So I would return it if the dead pixels are in a place where you see them all the time and it bothers you.
