Using Sync as a one way backup?

I have a user with a client mac (MacBook Pro). The MBP actually remains on our network at all times and I want to backup both her Documents and Desktop folders every time she logs out, no need to backup anything else. She has a home folder on our Active Directory controlled file servers. I can manage her AD account via Workgroup Manager because our schema has been extended.
Is there a way to set up a Home Sync so that it acts as a one way (client to server) backup each time she logs out? I can't use background sync, mainly because of the issues with the MS Database files from Office 2008. I don't actually want to "sync" in this case, just really create a snapshot backup of the 2 folders from her Mac each time she logs out. No history of file versions is required.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

you may not find step by step instructions to make it a one way sync. but check the details pane in wgm to add keys to the homesync prefs that may get you close.

You do realize that the SIM only contains account information for your wireless account.
Moving the SIM from phone to phone does not cause any of your iTunes content, contacts, email, etc to magically appear on the device.

  • Google Account BlackBerry Sync only works one way

Hey I just got my BB yesterday... I set up my Google Account on my BB and it downloaded all the data to my device. Then I set up an new Test-Contact and a Test-Appointment (calender) on my BB and it was synced to my google account... everything was fine... After that I set up another Test-Contact and Test-Appointment in my google account to check whether it would be synced to my BB... But that did not work at all... NOTHING WAS SYNCED... I waited for houres but it just would not sync the data to my BB... Same situation if I read or delete an Email in my google account the Email still appears as unread on my BB... But when I read one on my BB it appears as read on my google account... seems like sync is just working one way!
    Any ideas?

I'm still new with BB, using it as a loaner phone when my Android got waterlogged.  I have the same problem, sort of - in my case, I noticed with Emails that it takes a good amount of time for one read on the BB to show as read in my Gmail.  And it's the same the other way except maybe a tad faster.
But I'm not able to sync my google calendar any longer.  I read that google was dropping support for BB sync options sometime around 6/1/12, and somewhere in these support forums there's a thread on the topic, stating you can use your BIS account to get them to sync, and in looking for that thread I ran across your post.  If I find it, I'll come back and link to that thread.

  • Want to wireless sync AND sync to outlook (one-way is OK)

For a long time I have just been syncing to outlook on my desktop. Now my job requires that I have wireless sync to the online calendar at work. Only my calendar syncs wirelessly. I can still sync notes, tasks, contacts to outlook.
I would like to be able to do at least a one-way sync from device to outlook. I tried temporarily disabling the wireless sync on the calendar, but it didn't work.
So, in a nutshell, how can I wirelessly sync to my work calendar, AND desktop sync to outlook at home.
Is there a work-around for this?

Hi plovett and welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums!
Just to clarify, you only want to synchronize your calendar wirelessly to work and the rest you want to synchronize with your desktop at home?
    Thanks

  • Ical sync issue: only one way

I had installed the ios 5 on my iphone and the updates for my macbook pro for icloud they synced up fine. I just added my imac to the mix and I'm having issues with the syncing. If I place an event on my macbook it will push to the other devices (iphone & imac), however the events (old and new) that are on my Imac won't push to the other devices.
The ical on my Imac has been my parent calendar so it has the major events I want to sync.
Im not sure why its just one way? can anybody offer some advice

Fixed it. In case anybody else has this issue or simular. uncheck the calendar option in the icloud prefs, then check it back on. A little to simple.

  • I only want sync to work one way. My destop is master. All others are slaves and copy from master. I NEVER want anything from a slave to go to the master.

Old sync allowed me to control the direction of sync. I want my main desktop to be the master and PUSH all new bookmarks to all my other slave devices. I really NEVER want any bookmarks entered on a slave to sync back to the master. New sync can be bypassed to do this on desktops by using backup and restore with json files. But the Android FF doesn't allow restore from a json.
Why in the world would anyone want all the personal junk from their mobile devices to be automatically added to their work computer? Please mozilla, try out something new like this, and ask for user input. I have used mozilla since early netscape and always kept is as my one and only browser. Now the "new sync" has made this impossible. Can anyone recommend an alternative browser that allows manual sync from a master to slave devices?
Is there any way I control the direction of sync in a master/slave method?

Sorry, the latest version of Sync treats all connected devices equally. There is no "master" and "slave" setting or preference. And there is no way to control the "direction" of the Sync process, all devices are synchronized with all the data within the selected data types.

  • Can someone explain to me why iTunes will only sync photos ONE WAY from my PC to my iPhone, and not vice versa?

I have photos on my iPhone and want to put them on my PC.  Should be straightforward, right?
So I go ahead and install iTunes, and plug in my phone, and sure enough iTunes tells me I've got 1610 photoes on my iPhone.  It won't let me actually SEE them, of course.  Fine (no, not really fine).  So I create a blank folder on my PC and proceed to do a sync.  My options are to (a) Sync FROM "My Pictures" to the phone, or (b) choose another and sync FROM my PC TO the phone.
Where is the option to sync FROM my phone TO my PC????
It boggles my mind that I have to go outside of iTunes and use Windows Explorer to copy the photos from the phone to the computer.  So I go to "My Computer" and within the iphone Internal Storage there is only a DCIM folder and two sub-folders.  There are only 800 photos there!  Where are the other ones?
Evidently what I can see from Windows Explorer is ONLY the pictures I took with the phone itself, and NOT the pictures I saved from email attachments or instant messages!  Why? Where are they and how can I access them???
SO far, the closest thing I have been able to find is to have to buy a third party App like "Simple Transfer" to do this.  Is this really the case?  Or am I missing something?

Photo sync is only one way, computer to iPhone.
To get pictures from the iPhone to the computer, copy them to the computer as you would with any other device.
Pictures saved from emails or instant messages (if done on the device) are in the camera roll.
Pictures previously synced to the device from a computer are not available to be copied off the device.  They should already be on a computer.

  • SHAREPOINT QUESTION: One way SYNC of files from SharePoint cloud to hard-drive

SHAREPOINT QUESTION: One way SYNC of files from SharePoint cloud to hard-drive
How does a person enable Sales reps to SYNC literature files from a cloud library down to their computer,.... but then not be able to have them accidentally delete the files by accident if they delete a file from their computer and then have it
    sync upwards again.
    Permission Level
"Read" allows to download individual files but not SYNC down and there are too many files for them to go and download each file every-time.
"View Only" is only visible on the browser and not useful when reps are in remote parts of the world.
"Contribute" allows the sales reps to SYNC but if they delete a file from their computer, then it deletes it for all which is to much.
There must surely be a way to allow a one way (cloud-to-hard-drive) SYNC to avoid folks from deleting files.
Does anybody know how to d this or if not, how do I have Microsoft consider such a perceived weakness compare to dropbox

You can achieve the functionality which you describe using the OneDrive (SkyDrive Pro) in Sharepoint 2013. You can setup read only folders to sync to achieve "one way" traffic. You will need Office 2013 locally to avail the full features of
the coauthoring environment if you are looking into that as well.

Some benefits of using OneDrive include the following:
Users can take their documents offline with them and have them synchronize when they are online again.
Users' documents can be synchronized across all client devices and servers where the files are stored and synchronized.
Multiple users (online or offline) can work on documents at the same time, and the OneDrive for Business Windows Sync client will synchronize the changes between the users. If there are conflicts, users are prompted to resolve the conflicts.
Users can share and collaborate on documents.
Users can work from many locations, either online or offline, and work from many devices.

  • Two-way or only one-way syncing between G4 and mobile??

I have a Sony Ericcsson k750i mobile. When I first got it, I went through my Address Book (on my powerbook) and sorted it all out and synced with the phone (so all the numbers in the Address Book transfered to the phone). No problem. But now, if I sync, with isync, any numbers / names I have saved in the phonebook of the phone (say, I meet someone new when I'm out and take their number, put it directly in my phone) are erased. The sync, therefore, is ONE WAY, from the powerbook to the phone. Any new entries on the phone are scrapped.
Is there a way to avoid this happening? I looked in isync but I don't find. It's a pretty stupid system if you can't have a two-way street when you're syncing.
    Any ideas much appreciated

How? Does isync say something like, "There are contacts / numbers on your phone which are not in your Address Book. Do you want to copy them there?" to which you would reply Yes?
    How do you do it?

  • ICal One-Way Sync? (iPhone to Mac)

So, the other day my mother accidentally erased all of her events in iCal on her Mac. She still had them all on her iPhone, so she tried to sync it with her Mac to undo the deletions. But it did the opposite; all of her events were lost on her phone. Luckily, I was able to restore her back-up onto her iPhone. So I need to know if there is a way to sync the events (one-way) from the phone onto the Mac.
    Thanks!

    Thanks, Allan.
I am not sure if I will follow your advice, however. While you're probably right and it should be a true sync, what I was trying to say was that in my case (and apparently Berit's as well) it simply isn't.
Which means that apart from the fact that we will probably have to clean out our adress books and calendars again after a reset and sync. I've done that three times already and believe me, it's a major pain. Plus, there is also a chance it won't work afterwards.
I was actually hoping for there to be some workaround solution like a one-way sync. And I'm not happy with Apple's tendency to prevent such workarounds wherever they can. I understand they want to profit from their awesome products but wherever anything doesn't work they're starting to lose their user friendliness along the way. Which still, to me, is their selling point number one, notwithstanding the really great design.
Honestly, I'm not sure what to do right now.
But thanks again for your time. I'll keep posting what happens.
    Best,
    Martin

  • One Way Sync between Droid 4 and desktop

My new Droid 4 syncs between my desktop and phone but not the other way.  How do I unlock the secret?

  • Why is Mail rule syncing only one way?

Odd. I've got a Mac mini and an iMac, both running 10.8.2, both with iCloud syncing Documents & Data. Mail on the mini has rules -- created on that machine -- for SpamSieve that are not syncing to the iMac; in fact, both rules disappear every few days and I only notice because spam starts piling up.
On the other hand, changes to Mail rules on the iMac are synced to the mini. The mini has been running Mountain Lion for five months; the rules only started disappearing after I upgraded to ML on the iMac last month.
Any ideas on why the syncing is only one-way?

It appears that I can't edit my original question. So here is new information. It is syncing. However, the contacts are syncing with my personal folders. The calendar is syncing from Outlook to Ipad from my personal folders. However, the calendar is syncing to Outlook in a hotmail calendar in the profile that I didn't know existed. How do I get it set right.
I tried to select the calendar. However only one calendar is available in itunes. It must be the correct calendar as it is syncing fine. So how do I get ipad to sync back to the personal folders calendar instead of the hotmail calendar in my profile?

  • One-way video chat to PC not working.

So, I have an iSight and I tried using it as a one way video chat on iChat with someone on AIM (on a WIndows machine). Problem is, when I try to connect, after they accept it says the video chat didn't start because I, the person who initialized it, didn't respond. Help?

If the PC user has NEITHER a camera NOR a mic, iChat interprets the lack of data from the PC as a failure to connect. To connect with iChat AV, be sure the PC user has at least ONE of these AV devices.
Even with a mic, some PC users cannot make one-way work. Addition of any cheap USB PC webcam cures the problem for those with whom I have tested.

  • What is the best way of creating a one-time backup using DPM 2012R2?

    Hello,
Due to some severe tape issues, we have lost a lot of our long-term storage data.
I schedule a recovery point on our servers every Friday, once a week.  We retain this data for the 64 weeks (the maximum amount of versions DPM allows.)
Management needs me to put one recovery point from each month to tape (preferably from the beginning of each month.)
From the DPM console, I have been manually searching each server and running a recovery job from each "short term" recovery point we still have in the system.   I am recovering this data to a large disk array that I'm using as a staging
area.  My intention is to take this data and put it onto tape using DPM and leave it there forever (20 years.)
Since the space on the array is limited, I can only recover a few months at a time before having to delete the recoevered data to make way for the next group.
The way DPM works it seems you must have a protection group for every backup job you run;  so if I have to repeat this process 8 times, I'll end up with 8 different protection groups all assigned to the host running the staging array.  NOTE:
the host running the staging array will be wiped in the near future.
What would be the best method to carry this task out ?
This forum post is similar, but doesn't address all these additional groups created:
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/f379740c-4507-4a82-b275-c95e3e968b57/dpm-2012-r2-perform-one-time-backup?forum=dataprotectionmanager
    Any assistance would be welcome!
    Matthew J. Fazio

    Hi,
What you can do is protect the staging server by using a single share - lets call it STAGING for simplicity.
Perform your first set a restores and restore to the staging share, you can create meaningful subdirectories one for each data source you are restoring.
Now protect the STAGING share using DPM - protect using long term to tape only, Frequency yearly, and set retention policy for 20 years.
Perform an ad-hoc backup (right-click the data source and create recovery point to tape)
When that completes, delete the sub-directories under the staging share and then repeat the process of restoring more data then backing up the same share.  When you are all done, you can remove the protection group, but maintain the tape backups
so they will be available for restores.

  • One Way to Fix the "System Extension Cannot Be Used, AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" Error...

I found (one) way to fix this error...well, at least it worked for me (see below):
There seem to be various threads addressing this issue and no "one" way is the right way for everyone. I'm running my Macbook on OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). Once I installed the iTunes update, two things happened: my iPhone became corrupted when I sync'd via USB and then my iTunes stopped recognizing the iPhone as a "sync-able" device -- meaning it would show up on iTunes but when you went to click sync, the sync button was unavailable.
I tried locating the .kext file, deleting it, repairing it, replacing with an older version, entered different commands in terminal but I kept getting the same error. Ultimately, I fixed the problem fairly simply, but it may not be something everyone is willing to do. If you have an external hard-drive and had your computer hooked up to Time Machine, this is what you should do:
Hopefully you'd been backing your computer up automatically fairly recently, and you have some this stored on an external hard drive via Time Machine from before iTunes 11.4 was downloaded onto your computer.
If you haven't done so already, and your iTunes library isn't corrupt, Backup your entire iTunes library to an external hard-drive (if you don't care about your library, ignore this step...this procedure might not work, however, if your first backup of your iTunes library is via version 11.4. If you go through all of these steps and you encounter the same problem, restore your itunes to an older version via Time Machine, then redo steps)
To do this, create a new Folder on your hard drive and call it "iTunes"
Go into your iTunes preferences > Advanced > under "iTunes Media folder location" we want it to say /Volumes/(Your Hard Drive Name)/iTunesNext to the "iTunes Media folder location" dialogue box, it should read CHANGE or RESET. Click CHANGE, navigate to your external hard drive and locate the newly created iTunes folder...your computer should automatically start to transfer your library to the new destination.
Backup and "new files" on your computer that you create since updating your iTunes to version 11.4 (i.e. new iCal entries, documents)
Backup your important files (I have mine in dropbox but chose to be safe and backed them up on an external hard drive as well)
Once you have everything saved, you're going to want to go through the process of completely restoring your entire computer (essentially wiping it clean).
To do this on Snow Leopard, you need to have the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installing disc.
Insert disc > when the Install screen pops up, select Utilities... > it will then prompt you to Restart your computer
After your computer restarts, it will prompt you to reinstall Snow Leopard or select a different option from Utilities which can now be found at the top of your screen on the toolbar. From there, select the option that is along the lines of Restore from Backup Using Time Machine and then select which backup you want to restore your computer to ... since iTunes 11.4 went live on Sept. 10th, I would restore to any date before that.
When your computer restores itself to your chosen backup, your computer should be exactly as it was on that date, iTunes included. It's as if nothing ever happened.
To do this on any later OS X, I believe you have to restart your computer and then hold COMMAND+R before the grey screen appears. From here, I believe it will prompt you similarly to the Snow Leopard procedures 1-3 as listed just above this bullet point.
When your computer prompts you to update iTunes to version 11.4 from whatever version you reverted back to, DO NOT UPDATE. Keep your old iTunes version and wait for this thing to be addressed by Apple.
This procedure worked for me and although it's a bit tedious, it fixed both my iTunes and iPhone errors. Note: I did have to erase and restore my iPhone through an old backup via iTunes once iTunes was working again. Try it out. See if it works for you. MAKE SURE YOU BACKUP YOUR FILES BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANY FULL SYSTEM RESTORE.

There's more to it than this IMHO.  Here is my explanation:
If I go back in my Time Machine backups and restore the previous version before I installed iTunes 11.4, the version of that same kext was also listed as being "7.0" despite being older and twice the size (120400 bytes vs. 63024 bytes in the 11.4-installed version).
(The older version is "BuildVersion 305" and "SourceVersion 122000000000000"; the new 11.4 version is "BuildVersion 417" and "SourceVersion 113000000000000".)
    The real problem is this:
    /System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext/Contents/_CodeSignature used to contain
    -rw-r--r--+ 1 root  wheel  172 Jan 31  2014 CodeDirectory
    -rw-r--r--+ 1 root  wheel    92 Jan 31  2014 CodeRequirements
    -rw-r--r--+ 1 root  wheel  1745 Jan 31  2014 CodeResources
    -rw-r--r--+ 1 root  wheel  4064 Jan 31  2014 CodeSignature
/System/Library/Extensions/AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext/Contents used to contain symbolic links down into there:
    lrwxr-xr-x+ 1 root  wheel    28 Jun 12  2012 CodeDirectory@ -> _CodeSignature/CodeDirectory
    lrwxr-xr-x+ 1 root  wheel    31 Jun 12  2012 CodeRequirements@ -> _CodeSignature/CodeRequirements
    lrwxr-xr-x+ 1 root  wheel    28 Jun 12  2012 CodeSignature@ -> _CodeSignature/CodeSignature
When iTunes 11.4 was installed via Software Update/App Store, it removed CodeDirectory/CodeRequirements/CodeSignature but it did not remove the corresponding symbolic links.  Presumably that is what triggered the "cannot be used" pop-up message.
Trashing the kext and installing it from the downloaded 11.4 .dmg does not create the symbolic links, thus avoiding the problem.
Obviously rolling back to the previous (Jan 2014) kext will fix the problem as well as the symbolic links point to files that exist.
(I'm really curious to know what happened between BuildVersion 305 and BuildVersion 417 that caused it to shrink nearly by half.  It looks to me like the Code Signing stuff got ripped out - Lord knows why.)
