Using system preferences as an additional user
I have just created a new user account for my sons to use. However, depsite giving the account administrator priviledges, it is not possible to access system preferences when logged in as them. The icon appears in the doc as a dimmed ?, and it will not open from the apple menu.
I want to be able to set up desktop and dock preferences for them....HOW???!!!
it wasn't in the applications folder at all, but your suggestion then made me realise it had been moved to a different folder, hence the new account couldn't find it.
I've now restored it to the app folder in my own account, and the new account has now found it.
Thank you so much

Bug Report: Can't exit system preferences after creating new users
Setting up a brand new Mac Mini (Late 2014) with Yosemite. (Came installed with Yosemite). I got an i7 version with 16GB of ram and a 256GB solid state drive.
When I create a new user (either administrator or regular) and then attempt to exit from the "User and Groups" dialog box under "System Preferences" I get an error message that "System Preferences" is busy and that I have to wait. I tried waiting up to 5 minutes and still cannot close the dialog. The only way to kill the dialog box is to use Force Quit under the Apple menu. After killing the dialog with Force Quit, the newly created account DOES seem to work ok. It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes for Yosemite to simply create the default directories for a new account, so something is clearing getting wedged.
Additional details
This has occurs every time I try and create a new user (and yes I have Administrator privileges).
No other applications (either from Apple or other software publishers) have been installed on this mac.
This occurs whether the new user is set to use an iCloud Password or a Separate Password.
There IS a live wi-fi connection to the Internet.
If I create a second administrator account and then login with that account and attempt to create a new user the same thing happens.
I'm rather shocked to encounter such an obvious bug in the first 5 minutes of using a BRAND NEW Mac.
Any suggestions for how to fix this?I just tested it on my system and cannot replicate your problem. So, I would attribute it to a defective installation and suggest you do the following:
Install or Reinstall Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -
I am trying to activate the root account on my new Mac Book Pro. The instructions that I have found do not match what I have in System Preferences. What is the process when using Users and Groups. When I click on Join the Network Account Server- Open Directory Utility I don't see a option to activate root user as the instructions say at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1528
OS X Lion
From the Apple menu choose System Preferences....
From the View menu choose Users & Groups.
Click the lock and authenticate as an administrator account.
Click Login Options....
Click the "Edit..." or "Join..." button at the bottom right.
Click the "Open Directory Utility..." button.
Click the lock in the Directory Utility window.
Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
Choose Enable Root User from the Edit menu.
Enter the root password you wish to use in both the Password and Verify fields, then click OK.Do you mean you cannot select "Enable Root User" from the "Edit" menu as shown below?
Why do you think you need to enable the root user? I've never needed it in the history of OS X. -

Is it possible to save System preference settings for every user that logins to a Mac OS X?
I work at a school and we have iMacs running Mavericks 10.9 in our environment. We have them binded to our Windows domain so that way students can use their own login to access the Macs. I have a number of System preference settings that I would like to take a effect, but I only see that these settings take effect for every user. So even if I login as the Main administrator account and set settings in System Preferences, such as not allowing the Wifi symbol to show, the next user that logins will still see the wifi symbol because the setting isn't taking effect for their System preferences. Does anyone know a way to get System Preference settings to take affect for every user that logins? Maybe a script?
Modifying the user template is not supported. You can Google for people who have done it in the past. I would recommend going to official route, if possible. Here are a couple of training documents. I'm sure there is more available though more official channels.

I can't log into iCloud using system preferences using Apple Id
Hello comunity: I describe the problem as follows (sorry for my english, not a native speaker):
Background: Macbook air OS X 10.9 Mavericks (just updated), but changed my Apple ID just after that.
-When I try to log into Icloud through System Preferences, and write my Apple ID and password, it says "the login keychain is not found" and then it tells me that the server is down and can´t connect. (I have verified my Apple ID and password and can login through the website with no problem, and I have verified that the Icloud server is fine).
-It won´t let me go any further than that, It means I cant use Icloud in my Mac. I can access to Icloud online, but when online I don´t see my mac but I can see my Iphone and Ipad 2.
-I have read many (a lot really) about keychains and similar problems and cant find the solution.
I would appreciate your help!
PD: Other information that might be related: When entering to First Aid Keychain, I provide my password and when I hit "repair" it will tell me "...library/keychains/login.keychain is not a valid keychain file and that repair stopped unexpectedly"I think that is likely why you're having the problems with signing in. My keychain has been added to over many years. It has email addresses from 1997. I don't know how to clean that up. It would be nice if Apple redesigned Keychain Access to be something that actually allowed you to envisage their network. That's what bothered me about iCloud Keychain. There are so many places to change settings, type a password, and think about what that setting means. Knowledgable people who can manage a network from the Terminal, good for you. I want to launch software that finds all servers, and paints a good connection green and trouble yellow, etc. Hover your mouse over a red drive, it tells you the password needs. I think this is good enough implementation, except it is difficult for people who've never had a cryptography class to get a good idea of what their network topography is. Tell me, can you log on to iCloud.com on Safari?
I'll hang around here to see if somebody else gives a suggestion. Sorry I can't do more. -
Systeme Preference Corruption for All Users!
In one of my user account, I can't get the scroll bars to show!!!
I want in preference-general and select ''Always'' under Show Scroll Bars, but I can't see them in Safari, Mail...
When I close Preference, my ''Always'' selection is gone and it return to '' Automatically based on input device''
Also, issue with Screen Saver. I can select any Apple default screen saver. My iMac always play my iPhoto Library.
I'm suspecting Systeme Preference Corruption in all my users.
In previous post, Frank recommended to boot from recovery disk, go to terminal, rset paasword window and slect ''Reset Home Folder Permissions and ACLs''
This is what I did, exept, it was running after 24 hrs of waiting and I decide to quit. It did the same with all users...
Do you have a solution to this issue?
NOTE: Lions was reinstalled and HD erase. Repair Disk Permission done, Safe boot done.
What do I got left?Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy – do not type – the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select ▹ Restart from the menu bar. -

System Preferences is asking for user password three times (?)
System Preferences>Startup Disk requires the user password to unlock the pane (per my security settings), I select my startup choice (my main HD), then upon re-locking the pane I am asked for the password two more times.
?Then, don't relock the lock, just restart.

Keyboard remapping using system preferences
I'd like to keyboard remap using the system preferences for the right, left, up and down arrow key.
Is there an exact menu title for this?
If you also know of a solution with Karabiner that would be great as well. Thank you!Something that means something to you.

.Mac - Removing using System Preferences
I was told in the .Mac forum that I could find out in the OS forum how to fix my system preferences so that I can access the .Mac portion and then turn off iDisk Sync'ing or removing. I have tried with no success. Can anyone give me any more detail in how to do this.
Thank you.

Have you tried SystemPreferences -> .Mac. which controls all these things.

Freezing when using system preferences
Hi everyone,
On my MacBook Pro, when i enter system preferences, click the unlock icon ad put my password in, system prefs just freezes, and i have to go into force quite, etc. when, sometimes it works, about 1 in 5 times, it freezes when i change a preference, particulaly in to do with time and date. i am currently downloading 10.4.9, to see if tat chnges anything, but that will take all night. anyone know how to this might be fixed?Do you have the original MacBook Pro installer disks?
If you do, boot it up with the startup manager:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
If you don't, and you lost them call AppleCare for a replacement set:
http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
If you bought it third hand, ask for the seller to call AppleCare if they lost their set, and ask them to give them to you, as they don't belong to them.
Once you boot the installer disk, select the language, and go to the Disk Utility in the Utilities menu. Select repair permissions, and repair disk, and tell us the results. -

The Problem
Users are unable to change their password using System Preferences -> Users & Groups on a Mac that is connected to an LDAP server (specifically, OpenLDAP).
This error appears to be a result of OS X 10.7.4 now sending the username of the user rather than their full DN (e.g. it's sending bobsmith, notuid=bobsmith,ou=Users,dc=companyname,dc=com).
(a bug report for this issue has been filed with Apple and can be seen on OpenRader @http://openradar.appspot.com/11768796)
Steps to Reproduce:
Try to change the password using the System Preferences -> Users & Groups prefpane on Lion. It fails with the following error message:
The password for the account “bobsmith” was not changed. Your system administrator may not allow you to change your password or there was some other problem with your password. Contact your system administrator for help.
Expected Results:
The password should be changed.
Actual Results:
The error appears, and on the LDAP server, an error like the following is logged:
Jun 28 08:42:21 ldap3 slapd[7810]: conn=10518785 op=2 RESULT oid= err=21 text=Invalid DN
This error appears to be a result of OS X 10.7.4 now sending the username of the user rather than their full DN (e.g. it's sending bobsmith, notuid=bobsmith,ou=Users,dc=companyname,dc=com)
Notes: This was encountered by someone else over at the AFP548.com forums who ended up patching their LDAP server to resolve the issue. This shouldn't require patching LDAP to resolve, however. Lion needs to (at least have an option to) send the full DN of a user requesting to change their password, not the short username:
Text from above forum link (in case it is taken down):
So, I’ve got this OpenLDAP server with network home directories at home that all of my Mac machines authenticate to. Everybody can bounce around to whatever Mac is available. It works great.
Anyway, with Snow Leopard, I was able to change user passwords via System Preferences. However, that got broken when I upgraded to Lion (amongst other things). Both Snow Leopard and Lion send exop’s to the ldap server, but for whatever reason, the id is screwed up in Lion (or at least, it’s screwed up on the two machines at home I tested this with). Instead of sending the user’s DN, e.g. “uid=user,cn=users,ou=something,dc=somewhere,dc=com”, the ldap server is only sent the uid, e.g. “user”. The ldap server is expecting a DN here, so naturally, it fails with the error “Invalid DN”.
Bummer.
So, to work around that, I had to patch OpenLDAP (version 2.4.26 in this case). Now, when my server can’t resolve the id it’s given during a password change, it will look at the bind DN, and if the id string is contained within the bind DN string, it will just use the bind DN as the entry to change. I figured this would still allow me to manually specify password changes via an admin account while still giving users the ability to change their own passwords without having to point them at a webpage (lame).
I should point out that all my accounts have the uid as part of the DN… I guess if you were doing some kind of crazy SASL mappings, this might not work for you…
Anyway, here’s the patch in case anyone else is interested… If it works for you, great. If not, oh well.

Mac system preferences quit unexpectedly while using the Flash Player plug-in
Yesterday, 4/28/14, I got news that Flash version 13.0.0.201 had security issues, so I went to my MacBook Pro and using system preferences and the Flash pane, determined that I needed to upgrade to 13.0.0.206. The flash pane opened normally. I did the Flash upgrade and everything seemed to work OK, and the system preferences Flash pane continues to function normally.
I then went to my wife's identical MacBook Pro - mid 2009 running OS 10.9.2, opened system preferences, clicked on the Flash icon to see what version of Flash she was running, and system preferences quit leaving the message "System Preferences quit unexpectedly while using the Flash Player plug-in. Undaunted, I went to www.get.adobe.com and downloaded the lastest version fo Flash player and installed it on her maching, verifying the version as 13.0.0.206 using the Adobe website version verification functionality. However, even after the upgrade to 13.0.0.206, her system preferneces quits when the Flash icon is selected.
Here is the crash log:
