Thanks muchly.

I don't quite understand your question.
Do you mean that you are running Windows XP under vmware fusion and you are trying to access files on the Time Capsule?

  • IPod will not turn off after being used as an external HD in Windows

I have disabled the option to have Itunes open when I connect my Ipod and I turned off the iTunesHelper in msconfig. This allows me to use my Ipod as an external HD without interference by iTunes. I have found that since upgrading to Ipod firmware 1.1.1, after I disconnect my Ipod using the Safely Remove hardware option in Windows XP SP2 my iPod will not turn off. I just turn on the lock, and let sleep mode set in after 2 minutes.
This only occurs if I connect the iPod as an external HD and does not occur when I connect the iPod with iTunes open to sync my music library. The problem started with firmware 1.1.1. Is anyone also having this issue, and if so, is there a known solution?

If you are not past the 2 weeks return period you can just return it.. for sure the TC is not ideal when you want something to store files.. the fundamental issue is lack of backup. The TC cannot back itself up. Nor can Time Machine in the computer backup network drives.
To mount the TC disk in finder.
Use Go, Connect to server. in the top menu.
Type in AFP://TCname.local or TCIPaddress. (where TCname.local is the correct network name of the TC.. ie not its name as typed in, if it includes spaces and illegal characters like apostrophe. You need to find the actual network name from network utility netstat scan or better still use proper naming on the TC.
Local is the default domain and helps.
If the TC is in router mode the IP is static and is better used than the name.
AFP://10.0.1.1 for example with default IP is far superior way to identify a network resource.
The disk password will be requested. Add it to your keychain.
It is better to load files to a DMG or sparsebundle.. See Pondini for info.

  • I'm trying to transfer music from iTunes on an old PC that uses an external storage device to a new PC (Windows 7) that will use that same external storage device.  I am also dealing with new iTunes 11.  How do I do this??  What folder does iTunes use?

I'm trying to transfer music from iTunes on an old PC (Windows Vista Home Basic) that uses an external storage device to store the files to a new PC (Windows 7 Starter) that will use that same external storage device.  I am also dealing with the new iTunes 11.  How can I accomplish this successfully?    What folder does iTunes use to store the data in?  I've tried several things.  Home Sharing caused duplicates but not all songs or apps transfered.  It is a large library! I've tried just setting the path in the Advanced Tab of iTunes preferences of the new computer with the external drive connected the same as the path when the external drive is connected to the old computer.  This was the best solution so far but still a few artists missing and some apps. Any suggestions?

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
With iTunes 11 you might also have a Home Videos folder inside iTunes Media.
In the simplest cases you copy the entire iTunes folder from <User's Music> on the source computer to <User's Music> on the target machine, install iTunes, and it "just works"TM.
If the media folder (inside the red outline) has been split out to a separate location then you can copy the library folder (outside the red outline) as before and connect the drive holding the media so that it has exactly the same path as before. If the drive appears as D: on one system and E: on the other then the library won't be able to find the media.
The crucial file is iTunes Library.itl - this contains a record of the tracks that have been added to the library, ratings, play counts, playlists etc.

  • External HDD formatting for use in Mac OS X and Windows

I've been gifted with WD (My Passport) 1TB External HDD. On the box it says it requires reformatting for use in Mac OS X.
I used the earlier discussions. I couldn't decipher the steps details as it was mostly by level 4 above.
Can any honourable member advice me on how to reformat my new external HDD for use in Mac OS X and Windows (As in office and during meetings I might haveto use wwindows system)
Also if done with formatting will this be allowing to setup Time Machine back ups.
Please be sure that I want to use time machine exclusively for backup, some earlier discussions mention that TM can also be used for OS booting etc.,
I would be greatful to all who will help me in these regard

Normally the drives are formated as exFAT which could be used by both a Mac and a PC out of the box.  Connect the drive to your computer it should be able to read it.  If not then the system will ask you if you want o erase the hard drive.  Select yes, it will format the drive for use with a Mac only.  This is the required format to use it as a Time Machine backup.  As stated in our post you would like to use this hard drive on both Windows and Mac, you should reformat the hard drive as exFAT in disk utility.

I am so glad to hear about your success. As you are new to the Mac environment, I will be glad to help you more.
You said: "I can't change the setup yet but i have access". I don't understand what you mean about changing the setup! Please let me know more about that.
I also recommend to use Boot Camp, which allows you to install windows on a partition of your internal hard drive. This has many benefits. First, you can restart your computer and start up in windows. This makes your Mac device a complete windows machine and you gain the most from your hardware when working in Windows. Second, if a problem occures to your Mac OS X, you can restart your machine in Windows and prevent your data from getting lost. Third, you can import the Windows installed on the boot camp partition in to the Mac OS X using VMWare Fusion and work with it as a virtual machine. In this situation, VMWare enables you to work directly with your Windows in the boot camp partition. So it does not create a file package for the virtual machine in OS X.
Regarding the data safety and reliablity, I strongly recommend using Time Machine. You can also set it up to back up your virtual machines or not. This is possible to set up in the Virtual Machine Preferences Page in VMWare Fusion, or in the Time Machine preferences page in the System Preferences app of OS X.
Please don't hesitate to ask any other question. I will be glad to help you.

  • Using Apple external modem in Windows

I just got a new black 2.16 Macbook. I have ordered a copy of Windows XP Home SP2 and a copy of Parallels. I have a software called Meditech by Cambridge Software which allows me to connect to my hospital computer system via a modem--the Mac version stopped working a while ago on my Macs, as soon as they became G5 the modem wouldn't connect anymore. The software was written for Windows with the Mac version as an afterthought I believe. Will the network settings when run in Windows XP allow me to use my Apple External Modem (as you know, they Macbooks don't have a built in internal modem) to connect to this software?

  • How do I use the magic mouse with a windows pc

Is it possible to enable touch features of the magic when using it with a PC running windows 7?

    Hi.
I've used the iMic myself, and I don't believe it is capable of doing what you are attmepting.
The iMic is designed to provide a USB input for an external microphone, and  USB output for external speakers for your Mac. It has a mic input port, and a speakers out port.
Neither port is specified for use with a gaming headset (mic with headset on a single plug).
You will need to look elsewhere for a USB gaming headset.
    I hope this is helpful.

Mixing files with data is not always great idea.

Why not just connect the PC directly to the TC by ethernet and copy the files over?
It is hugely faster and much less mucking around.
In windows load the airport utility for windows.. if you have not already as this will help you access the drive.

  • The preview option in FCK doesn't work when using trought an external app!

    Hello everyone!
I have an issue with the FCK-editor when using in an external application.
We are executing the “WCM_EDIT_DATA_FILE” service to launch the FCK contributor application in a portal (Webcenter) so we can edit datafiles. The preview option (preview butto) does not apply a region template and the content is shown in the same order as defined in the region definition. Viewing the same datafile trough Site Studio I can see that the preview option applies a region template.
I've compared the links but I am not getting anywhere.....
The links for the preview are:
    Via the portal:
    http://MyServer/vcc/idcplg?IdcService=SS_QD_GET_RENDITION&coreContentOnly=1&dDocName=DF_NEWS_BERLIN_8&dID=765&wcm.contributor.mode=false&IgnoreContributorOnly=true&previewId=1276003853183&WCMPopupId=POPUP09875462424653607178
    Via Site Studio:
    http://Myserver/VCCPOC/index.htm?wcm.contributor.mode=false&IgnoreContributorOnly=true&previewId=1275983448108&WCMPopupId=POPUP07808631203986127290
I can see that the portal link has the same parameters as the Site Studio link and some more. I even tried adding a region template in the url by adding my template as a parameter like this "&templateDocName=RT_BOUND_DETAIL_VIEW" just to force it but without any luck. The same goes for the "view differences"-button in the FCK editor.
    Has anyone had this problem?
    Thanks

    Hi Stijn,
Here is the link to the SS-services:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14571_01/doc.1111/e10615/c11_ss_services.htm#insertedID0
And here is the link to the CS-services:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10316_01/cs/cs_doc_10/documentation/developer/services_reference_10gr3en.pdf
The name of the service that creates new data file is CHECKIN_NEW_FORM.
Saving the file from the FCKEditor makes the browser window "greyed out" so for the time being we are hitting the "go back"-button in the browser to return to the portal... as we open the editor in the same window as the portal. However, there must be another solution as this is fare away from user friendly!
Let me try to answer some of your questions:
    - Are you also using the Site Studio publishing functionality (we will not)
    No, we are not either.
    - where will your site design be done (we'll try to do as much as we can in WebCenter to keep it all in one place; we might even just output XML with our templates from SS, and transform it in WebCenter using different "templates")
We are also planning to have it all in WebCenter. We are using SS for creating region templates and subtempalates used in the portal (Webcenter/ADF) for showing the same data files in different ways. That means that we also have elements, region definitions, placeholders and so on in the SS.
    - what are you doing with inline images in the FCKEditor (we want contributors to be able to upload there images easily from the Editor, without the need to browse to UCM)
Well, for the time being the contributor must browse the some images from the CS because the images must have a certain height and width... so that is our way of controlling that the user is choosing from the approved images. When it comes to images in the text the contributors can add as many images as they want that are not from the CS. They can just copy/paste them in the editor from whatever location they want.
    - is it correct that the metadata tab cannot be used in combination with profiles defined in UCM (see other thread WebCenter Content
I've heard that before so my guess is that it's true. My question then is how do I do to hide the metadata tab if I do not use it?
    - will you be using the ctrl-shift-F5 functionality to edit content, or just create a link to the WCM_EDIT_... service in a popup window?
We create a link to the WCM_EDIT_... service that opens in the same window as the portal.... but as I mentioned earlier that is not the most user friendly solution so we probably must change that....
    Now back to my problems:
I know why the preview trough the portal and the site studio differs.
The services that are used when previewing content trought the SS are:
    SS_SET_PREVIEW_ELEMENT_DATA
    SS_GET_PAGE
    LOAD_DOC_ENVIRONMENT
The services that are used when previewing content trought the portal are:
    SS_SET_PREVIEW_ELEMENT_DATA
    SS_QD_GET_RENDITION
    LOAD_DOC_ENVIRONMENT
The SS_GET_PAGE actually shows a page in SS and as soon as there is a region template attached to the page you are able to see the content the way you want. That is not the case then calling the SS_QD_GET_RENDITION service. So my question is if there is a workaround where I can force a region template to be used con conjunction with the SS_QD_GET_RENDITION service?
Anyone? All ideas are really appreciated!

Trying to save files on "PC" side of Mac, using a FreeAgent external harddrive.  I get the error message E:/not accessible  access denied.  Can I not use an external harddrive, if not, what is the best way to back up PC side of a Mac

Apple has really crappy NTFS read-only that does not always work. And it is probably a licensing issue.
Paragon Software is constantly being updated and supported with their NTFS for Mac OS X - they also have an HFS+ driver for Windows that works - Apple's HFS+ read-only driver for Boot Camp / Windows does not.
I keep seeing problems and lack of support for MacFUSE, that could change.

  • What is the best format to use on an external hard drive so I can both back up my Macbook Pro and also put movies on it from another hard drive (PC)?

I am looking for a solution to whether if it is best to get two hard drives or one that can do two things that I want.
I am looking for a hard drive format that can both back up my 500GB Macbook Pro but I was also wondering if I could also put movies on it from another hard drive that is PC based. Would partitioning the hard drive work for this? I don't know what are the best formats to use.
If this is too hard it might just be easier having a separate 500GB hard drive for back up of my Mac and another bigger hard drive for the movies etc (the files are probably bigger than 4GB). Any help would be greatly appreciated as I need to make a decision soon!

    Csound1 wrote:
Microsoft has not released the official exFAT file system specification, and a restrictive license from Microsoft is required in order to make and distribute exFAT implementations. Microsoft also asserts patents on exFAT which make it impossible to re-implement its functionality in a compatible way without violating a large percentage of them.[13] This renders the implementation, distribution, and use of exFAT as a part of free or open-source operating systems or of commercial software, for which the vendors could not obtain a license from Microsoft, not only technically difficult, but legally impossible in countries that recognize United States software patents.
Can't help with that, if one is using a Windows machine then they are subjected to their rules and control.
Limited support outside Windows and Mac OS X operating systems as of 2012, when most consumer electronic devices could only handleFAT12/FAT16/FAT32, rendering exFAT (and flash memory formats using it) impractical as a universal exchange format.
The OP said they plan to store movies on the external drive.
Many movies today are well over 4GB in size, thus exFAT has to be used and formatted on the PC, which the Mac can then read.
Older Windows NT versions up to Windows Vista without Service Pack 1 do not support exFAT.
Irrelevant, Microsoft provides a free download of exFAT for Windows XP, and Vista shouldn't be running on pre SP1 anyway.
Some distributions of Linux have begun to include support for exFAT. It is however, only available as a file system in user space, as it's not supported by the kernel.
Irrelevant, OP is using Windows and OS X, not Linux and if they did Linux can read the files at least and transfer, which is all they care about really.
Windows Vista is unable to use exFAT drives for ReadyBoost. Windows 7 removes this limitation, enabling ReadyBoost caches larger than 4 GiB.[14]
Irrelevant, the OP's is intending to use it as transfer drive between Mac's and Windows for movies.
The standard exFAT implementation only uses a single file allocation table and free space map. FAT file systems instead used alternating tables, as this allowed recovery of the file system if the media was ejected during a write (which occurs frequently in practice with removable media). The optional TexFAT component adds support for additional backup tables and maps, but may not be supported.
Some relevancy, but only exFAT can handle 4GB+ files between Mac's and PC's, so the need outweighs the possible problem.
The OP needs to follow the standard Windows practice of "safely removing hardware" before physically disconnecting the external drive. If a write is occurring, it won't allow disconnecting until the write is finished.
Support for up to 2,796,202 files per subdirectory only.[1][nb 3] Microsoft documents a limit of 65,534 files per sub-directory for their FAT32 implementation, but other operating systems have no special limit for the number of files in a FAT32 directory. FAT32 implementations in other operating systems allow an unlimited number of files up to the number of available clusters (that is, up to 268,304,373 files on volumes without long filenames).[nb 4]
Not a issue, only in extreme cases of a lot of small files. The OP plans to use it for movies which are usually large and take up a lot of space on the drive.
IMMO It looks like you just ran off and copied something to argue your point when all the points are basically irrelevant.
There is only one format that can easily share 4GB sized files between Mac's and PC's without further complications.
It's ALSO possible to install MacDrive on the PC and format the drive on the Mac HFS+, but I didn't recommend that because I know it's a hassle just like third party NTFS writing software is a hassle on Mac's.
If you so anti-Microsoft format, then you must know Paragon has to pay a license fee to Microsoft for using the NTFS format.
At least with exFAT there is no fee to Redmond, at least not yet.
