Using TC like a USB Disk for capturing TV Stream.

Hi There,
I have a satellite receiver which hase USB port. A USB stick can be plugged in, such that I can record TV streams on that USB. I tried to connect the TC and the receiver using a USB cable to record the stream on TC, but the receiver does not recognize the TC as a "USB Disk", I'm wondering what would happen,if I use a USB-to-Ethernet adapter. Can the TC, basically operate as an external HD if it is connected via Ethernet port to another device?

The USB port on the TC is meant for attaching an external USB HDD, printer, or hub ... NOT for connecting the TC to another device as an external HDD itself.
If you want to use the TC's internal HDD for file storage, you would need to connect to it either by Ethernet or by wireless.

  • My macbook pro hard drive died.  I only have a windows hard drive and an old powerbook G4 which of course you can't use to create a boot disk for my macbook.  How can I solve this?

I can't get app store on my old power book to download OS X,  My macbook pro hard drive died and all I have is a windows hard drive, still has windows os  on it, a 500 Gb USB drive and this power book.  How can I get my macbook back up without spending money?  Thanks

And what happens if the OPs Mac is of a newer version that came with a version of Snow Leopard above the 10.6.3 version that is on that Retail, meant for Upgrade, disc? Like if it came with 10.6.4/.5/.6/.7? That disc you linked to would not work.
He needs to contact Apple and get a replacement set of Original System Reinstall Discs. That is the only way he can be assured it will work and he would also get the iLife apps which he wouldn't buying that DVD disc you linked to.

The Snow Leopard DVD is $20 from Apple. You'll just have to wait a few days. BTW this is a full installer that works with any model computer that can run SL. Apple used to ship recovery/installation disks that were tied to specific computer models so that a 15" MBP installer disk coudn't be used on a 13" MBP computer. So you need either full installer or the recovery disks for your specific model.
And BTW, I have a 2009 13" MBP w/8GB RAM that is running Mavericks. With a 5400 RPM drive I used to experience a bit of beach balling (think hour glassing) but an SSD has given it new life. It feels now slower than the newest MBPs - it obviously benchmarks considerably slower but in everyday use it doesn't feel like a 4 1/2 year old computer at all.

  • USB disk for time machine?

I'm looking for recommendations for reliable brands of USB exteral drives for use with Time Machine back-up. I have a Western Digital Passport drive that used to work ok, but now randomly ejects when I try to run a TM back-up, or even when trying to use Disk Utility on the drive. The Passport drive seems to be failing, so, what is a good (better) brand external drive?

    Greetings,
I like to look at the average buyer ratings:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H6581ZM/A
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H2068VC/A
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H0815VC/A
I've got a few WDs and Seagates and an Acomdata.  Always had good luck with them.
Some manufactures offer longer warranties (like 2 years at LaCie) so read the fine print to get the longest one you can.
    Cheers.

  • Is it possible to use the snow leopard install disk for bootcamp setup?

I'm going to be installing a windows 7 partition through bootcamp on my macbook, but I can no longer find the two original install disks that it came with. So my question was whether or not its possible to go through the bootcamp process with the snow leopard install disk?

Do you mean a "Retail OSX Snow Leopard Install DVD for USD 29" ?
If so, then yes. use it.
Sounds to me like the Original Install Discs you refer to are OSX 10.5 Leopard ones, right ?
These won't work with Windows 7 since Windows 7 requires OSX Snow Leopard DVD at minimum for the Driver Installation and BootCamp Assistant version 3.x as well, which is also only avaiable in OSX Snow Leopard.

  • Is FCE 3.5 able to use a 2TB external hard drive for capture?

Having strange problems capturing on my newest (& biggest) external drive, a 2 TB G-raid.  Even if I set the G-raid as the only scratch drive, FCE captures to the Mac hard drive.  I am now getting past the midpoint of this drive's capacity, that is there's already about a terabyte of footage on it.  Is there an upper limit of drive size FCE will handle?
I've tried moving the newly-captured footage over to the G-raid in Finder and deleting it from the Mac HD but then get into difficulty with what seem to be spurious and intractable "media offline" messages.
Not sure if this is inherent in the software or if I maybe have a bad external drive (it's only about 9 months old.)  Or other possibilities?
I'm thinking about reformatting the big drive into 2 volumes - the footage is backed up on other drives - but that's a long run to reload all the data unless there's some likelihood it will work...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    ss

Thanks for input, Dick.  Connection has been via 800FW only.  It's been a frustrating 3 days, but I'm beginning to think drive/volume size was a red herring.  Not only is FCE 3.5 unable to deal with this drive, but Finder on the OS X 4.11 has been unwilling to do a simple transfer of its files to another drive. A 3-month-old clone of my boot drive worked exactly the same as the current version on these tasks, that is, not very well.
Right now I am moving ~650GB of the same video clips from my only working backup drive (a 750 GB 400FW Seagate FAP) to a 1TB USB drive converted from Windows format for the occasion.  Not for editing, just for a second backup...  It's chugging along slow & steady.
Time to talk to my friends at G-Tech.   I believe this drive is under 3-year warranty...   :-)

  • Using WSUS like a Proxy cache for windows updates.

Long story short I want updates to be done exactly as if there was no WSUS server, I could'nt care less about managing what updates my users can download or not download. I just want only
1 copy of the updates to be downloaded to WSUS or some proxy so i don't have 1000's of users downloading the same file 1000's of time.   I really don't want a system that I need to approve any updates or retain 100's of GB's on my server.  but
if a user needs a obscure printer driver I don't want to keep it on the server  just because one user might need it.
    Any Ideas?

  • Using cell phone as a 3G USB modem for Leopard

    Hi All,
I just get an MacBook Pro the last week, I was happy with the UI of the OS at first sight, but when come to the setting of the network, I am really frustrated.
I get a SE P1i cell phone, I would like to use it as a usb modem for my MAC so that I can have 3G internet connection when on the road. But the problem is that, I can't connect it to my MAC at all!
Leopard can regonize my phone but it seems that none of the modem script(including the SONY ERICSSON script pre-installed) work for my phone. when I checked in the activity log, I see that the result of running every modem scripts are
"CCLExit: -6019 (Modem error, modem not responding.)"
I guess it should not be the problem of my phone as I try using SE K800i, the same result...
although I know that I can use the bluetooth rather the USB cable to connect them together, I would prefer USB cable as it is faster and more secure.
anyway, any help would be appreciated.

(generally I understand one does the same as with a bluetooth phone, but plugs in the usb cable and skips the bluetooth part)

  • Audio output using Logitech Clearchat Pro USB headset sounds like chipmunks

I use a Logitech Clearchat USB headset for online meetings daily. On my previous machine (Black MacBook 2GHz) the headphones and mic worked fine. I just upgraded to a new 2.66 Unibody MacBook Pro and while the microphone works fine but the audio in the headphones sounds like chipmunks. If I switch the audio output to the speakers, the audio sounds fine.
Logitech claims that since the drivers the headphones use are built-in, it's not their issue. I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this problem and how I might be able to get it resolved.
    Thanks.

' orangehat I sincerely hope you (we?) get an answer on this one! I ordered exactly the same headset the same time I did my 17-inch MBP. Still waiting for everything to be delivered - so can't say as yet whether I have the problem too. Hoping not.
' Hoping there's an answer to your question anyways so I can get an idea of things before my kit lands (IF that EVER actually HAPPENS!!!)

  • DO NOT install Airport Extreme update 2008-4 if using usb disk with TM

I have Airport Extreme and a WD 1TB disk with two partitions connected to the Extreme. Other partition just for stuff and the other for Time Machine backup.
Today I installed Firmware update 7.3.2 and disaster struck. I noticed that Airport Extreme was reporting a disk problem. I disconnected the drive from Extreme and use the Disk utility to find out what is the matter. The partition used for backup needed repair, but couldn't be repaired. I had to format it.
The worst thing (besides losing all my TM backups): After I got the disk formatted, I checked TM. It wasn't possible to do Time Machine backups any more for a USB disk connected to Airport Extreme.
    Anyone else have the same?
I strongly recomend NOT to install the update if using Airport Extreme + USB disk for Time Machine.
I'm really dissapointed if this is an issue connected to the update 7.3.2.

    Hello
I'm having issues too wtih the drive connected to my airport extreme basestation but not the same kind.
Sometimes (5 time a day) the airport extreme doesn't respond anymore and it doesn't appear in the airport utility. Then every body is disconnected from internet (even if the light stil green...).
I have to reboot the basestation manualy.
I also have two partitions (datas and TM). I'ts very anoying th only solution i found right now is to unplug my drive...
Hope Apple will fix this ASAP ...

  • New Airport Extreme (802.11ac) Support for Encrypted USB Disk

The old Time Capsule and Airport Extreme apparently did not support a filevault2 encrypted USB disk for storing files like an NAS (not talking about a time machine backup).  Does anyone know whether the newly released Airport or Time Capsule now supports the encrypted disk?

I do not think that USB encrypted disks are supported...and would be surprised if they were....but will know for sure late tomorrow.
Will update at that time if no one else has answered before that time.
The fact that Apple still has a USB 2.0 port on the new AirPort products might be a clue as well.

  • Can't see USB disk attached to other mac

I have an Airport Express, on the network is a Mac Mini which has an USB disk attached to it (to the Mac Mini).
However, I can't see the disk from any other mac that uses the Airport (this used to work)
I've looked for "disk sharing" in Preferences and in the Airport Setup Utility, but couldn't find anything.
I've also made the Sharing & Permissions of the USB disk for "Me" and "Everyone" as " Read & Write"
Any idea how I can resolve this issue?
    Thanks,
    Awfers

Ok, thanks for clarifying. You don't need to change any settings within the AirPort Utility, but let's double-check your Mac Mini's settings to make sure that it is both sharing the disk properly and that it's OS X firewall is not blocking the requests.
For File Sharing: System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing
o Make sure that the folders on your external hard drive, that you want shared, are selected in the Shared Folders window.
o Make sure that you have, at least, Everyone = Read Only set in the Users window.
o Select Options..., and then, verify that you have "Share files and folders using AFP" is enabled for Mac clients, and "Share files and folders using SMB" is enabled for Windows clients.
For the OS X Firewall: System Preferences > Security > Firewall
o If "Allow all incoming connections" is enabled, verify that: "File Sharing (AFP, SMB)" is now displayed in the list.

  • WRT610N usb disk upgrade *#

I have a version 2 WRT610N dual band wireless/GB router. It has worked great.  I use it as one of two backup drives for all of my home computers.  The other drive is an IOMEGA 2TB network drive.   BTW, it was just this week that I figured out how to get HD sony video etc. streaming without stutter, but that is another topic.  I want to upgrade the drive to a 1TB and faster drive.  My old drive is a lenovo/fujitsu 500GB 5400 RPM drive. It works great, but it is slower and I need more space.  So the problem becomes a series of - buy new drive, format it, put in router, router doesn't recognize it.  I tried this many times of the year and gave up.  Yesterday I got a new Seagate 500GB 7200 RPM drive. I figured I would try it again and mistakenly backed up 400GB of data to it first (wasting time) only to have the router's web page 'can't recognize usb device.'   Arghh. I have the latest firmware also.   After searching, I can't find a list of supported drives.  I can't keep going to the store and returning drives.   I am on support now with linksys, on second person, on second 5 minute hold.   I was just told that 'just to set expectations, you no longer have warranty support.'   So now I am on hold again.  I only want a list of drives that will work so I don't waste time and gasoline.   I am wondering if I should consider upgrading routers completely, but that seems to be a waste also since the rest of the functions in the WRT610N work great.

I tried the KB site of Cisco and I found the list. Here's the link: List of Compatible HD and USB disk for WRT610Nv2.
