Using TC to extend network

Good afternoon.
I have a Cisco Valet Plus. I'm trying to set up my TC to extend my network by having it upstairs. I have ethernet cable connected to it, however, I can't seem to get it to work. Everytime I try to set it up to extend, it instead switches to join when it reboots. I've looked at the PDF setup instructions as well as doing some searches, but haven't had any luck. Have even reset the TC.
Any help or direction would be appreciated.
Thank you.

If you will have the TC connected to the Cisco router by Ethernet, you do not want to use the "extend" feature as this is only intended if the connection between these routers would be wireless.
Instead, you just want to reconfigure the TC as a bridge. This will allow the Cisco router to continue to provide both the NAT & DHCP services for all network clients, regardless of which router they are connected to.

  • Using TC to extend network range.

My home network is currently set up with 2x b/g AX's in a WDS configuration. I also have a TC (b/g and n capable) for backups. I am wondering if I can add the TC into the wireless network (rather than just joining it) to increase my range. I am thinking of using the TC as the main and the two AX as remotes to extend the network. Will this slow down my TC backups? Also would this now allow me to use TC backup from a larger range (obviously I imagine if im out of the n 5.0ghz range and its connecting to the TC via the AX this would decrease the speed, but the extra backup range would be very useful)?

I guess I did not make myself clear when I said that everything would drop down to "g" wireless if you choose WDS. If you configure the TC to "participate in a WDS arrangement", everything...both bands on your TC....automatically drop down to 2.4 GHz "g" wireless, so the maximum speed you will attain will be "g" levels on your "n" Time Capsule.
WDS is a "g" technology. it cannot operate at "n" level speeds.
But, with the other 2 AirPort Express devices on the WDS network, the first will drop the bandwidth in half on the entire network and the second will drop that in half again on the entire network.
Your entire WDS network will be operating at maximum "g" wireless with only one quarter of the original bandwidth on the network. The maximum speed that you will able to attain on the network will be approximately 13 Mbps.
Since "n" wireless at 2.4 GHz can attain speeds of up to 130 Mbps and up to 300 Mbps at 5 GHz, your WDS network will be operating at only a small fraction of it's capability.
If you want to use wireless only to "extend", (I suggested using ethernet with your two "g" AirPort Express devices) and you replaced the two "g" AirPort Express devices you have now with two new "n" versions, you could use Apple's "Extend a wireless network" feature and extend using wireless only.
The "Extend a wireless network" setup will maintain "n" speeds throughout the network with a much smaller bandwidth loss (about 10-15% per device), so your network would still be working at 60-70% of it's capability. Unfortunately, you cannot use your "g" AirPort Express devices for this purpose.

  • I'm confused please help me...using airport to extend network

I bought an apple airport extreme base station a few days ago. I was told I could use it to extend my networks range. I currently have tv Internet and phone through xfinity/Comcast. My xfinitity router is an SMC and I need to use it cuz the phone runs off it. I live in a 4 level townhome and it's range *****. Doesn't work in all rooms on the 4th floor. So I bought the base station and hooked it up to the SMC via an Ethernet and thought I set up right. But I noticed the range didn't improve so I opened the airport utility on my MacBook pro I clicked on the base station on the next window under wireless under a drop down I chose "extend network" or something like that. It said wait a few moments for update then I got an error. So I called apple to ask what I was doing wrong and they said I couldn't use an airport to extend the network of a 3rd party router. Not unless I put them in different rooms and connected them with a super long Ethernet. So now I'm confused is that right?  All I want is a better signal in my house. Please someone help me and explain to me how I make that happen..

I wasn't able to figure out how to set up the roaming network.
It is the same thing that you have set up now except you use the same wireless network name, same security settings and password as the "main" router and make sure that Bridge Mode is being used.
We can easily troubleshoot this if you want.
Now I'm just wondering if I could have done the same thing with the cheaper express base station?
You could, but it would not be dual band operation like you have now, and no more than 10 wireless clients would be able to connect to the AirPort Express. You also have available Ethernet ports on the AirPort Extreme in case you need to connect a device that way. In addition, the Extreme has a much better Wi-Fi antenna than the Express.

  • Using AE to extend network range

I'm sure this has been asked but since the search is turned off I can't find it.
I have an Airport Express (older G) that I use for Airtunes. I have a AEBS (n) and a G5 iMac desktop and and a 14" iBook and a black MacBook. Lately the black Macbook airport signal has become flacky at best often dropping off completely. I think the card might be going south as the other two computers work fine. I'm wondering if I could use the AE to extend the network and still allow to stream Airtunes. I can't seem to find anything that either forbids or allows this.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I just got off the phone with AppleCare. I've got a similar setup. iMac 24" serving as the iTunes Library hub, connected to the Airport Extreme. I've got a MacBook AppleTV and an iPodTouch. I have PC speakers hooked up to the AppleTV and can choose to turn these speakers on through iTunes. Recently upgraded to the 2.0 software for my iPodTouch and downloaded the Remote app.
So, now I purchased an Airport Express to put upstairs in the bedroom to connect with my Altec Lansing inMotion iM600 speakers. I setup the Airport Express and the light is green. I've connected my speakers and switched the source to Aux....all I get is static.
Apple Care told gave me three things to try.
Click the extend this network on you AEBS.
Make sure Airport is on for my main iMac (this part doesn't make sense since because you would think the signal from my iMac is being transmitted via the Ethernet cable connected to the AEBS and then broadcast to the AE.
Bottom line, I think it will support both. Streaming music and extending your range.
    Good luck,
    Mark

Have new Airport Extreme conneted via ethernet cable from HughesNet Gen4 modem. Using NetGear WN3500RP extender. NetGear asks for different names for the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. Most of what I have read indicates extender should have same name as main network? How is it best to configure with the Airport Extreme router 802.11ac?

Different names for the 2.4 and 5 GHz networks are optional, but can be convenient for you to distinguish one from another. It's up to you.

  • I just got a Time Capsule, and when I try to use it to extend my Airport n type network, it seems to take it over instead.

Could I be doing something wrong to cause this? The Time Capsule is hanging off the network on an ethernet cable and can be accessed by all the Macs over wireless, but I would like to use it to strengthen the signal at that end of the house.  When try to set it up the extend the network, It seems to take it over and knock off the Airport Extreme and Airport Express currently on it.  When I initially set it up, I selected "Extend network" but it changed it on its own to create network.  I later changed it back to extend, but it then took over and I had to turn off its wireless to get the Epress and Extreme back onto the network.  I had just updated the Airport Utility to the latest version on my Macbook Pro and Mini, but I have an iMac still on Snow Leopard that I believe is still running an older version.

Actually I am not sure how much it is able to export of the old settings but worth a go.

Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.

  • Do I have to use airport extreme to be a main network if I want to use Airport express extend my wifi range

Do I have to use airport extreme to be a main network if I want to use Airport express extend my wifi range.

You cannot extend wifi from a different brand router..
    Only apple to apple.
But the apple router does not have to be the main router.. it can be in bridge.. as long as it is creating a wireless network it will work fine.

  • HT4628 Using an Airport Express and a second Airport Extreme to extend network; will proximity to AEX vs. AE make a real world difference in speed

I have set up an extended network (thanks go to Bob Timmons for his assistance) using an AE as a base station and a second AE and an Airport Express to extend the wireless signal. Comcast provides, so they say, 50 Mbps. The AEX is located in the bedroom where it is used more often and the AE is in the pantry (for  occasional use in the garage.)  Would I get better speed/signal strength if I switched the two devices; i. e., placed the Airport Extreme in the bedroom and the AEX in the pantry?

Thanks for your response. I set up the wireless network because running Cat-5 was cost prohibitive. My internet connection is very good for general purposes but I ask the question, somewhat academically, because Wi-Fi Explorer shows the Max Rate of the network devices as follows:
Airport Express (located in the bedroom):  144 Mbps @ 2.4 GHz
Airport Extreme (in the pantry):  217 [email protected] GHz
To reiterate, If these two changed locations would I get better speed/signal in the bedroom location? Does it even really matter since Comcast is "only" sending me 50 Mbps? Just a couple of questions to keep my mind active (and confused).

  • I am getting an un expected error message when updating the setting to "extend network".  Is there an obvious setting I may be missing?  Cisco router being used.

I am getting an un expected error message when updating the setting to "extend network".  Is there an obvious setting I may be missing?  Cisco router being used.

If you are trying to "extend" using wireless only, you may not be aware that Apple designed the "extend" feature as a proprietary setting to only work with other Apple routers.
It is extremely unlikely that this will work with a Cisco router.
If your plans call for connecting the AirPort Express to the Cisco router using a wired Ethernet connection, it should be possible to configure the Express that way.

  • Using Airtunes after extending my network

I have bought an AX to extend my network also using my Airport Extreme base station. I have connected my Powerbook G4 and my iBook G4 using a Netgear DG834 v2 modem. My problem is that when I try to set the AX to use airtunes it won't connect. I can get airtunes to work if I set up the AX separately from my original wireless network. How can I have both the AX extending my original network AND so that it enables airtunes to work. I just can't do it.

It really makes no sense to upgrade to the AirPort Extreme "n" version and keep the older "g" version AirPort Express because you will still have to configure the new AirPort Extreme to work in a WDS setup.
WDS operates only at "g" wireless speeds, so you will lose any advantage of having a newer AirPort Extreme. It will perform the same as your old AirPort Extreme in this regard.
If you upgrade to new "n" versions of both the Extreme and Express, you can use Apple's "Extend a wireless network" feature....Not WDS....and you will have much faster speeds and much higher performance on the network.

  • HT4260 Extended Network: Relay has ghosted "Connect Using:"

I have 2 Airport Extreme Base Stations on Firmware 7.6.1 (current as at June 22, 2012). I was using Airport Utility 6.1 for Lion, then downloaded the 5.6 Utility per another post that indicated I could then get parity with the instructions for "Extended Network" setup.
I'm following along, but as soon as I tell the relay to extend a wireless network, the option to "Connect Using" is grayed out. It is locked on "Wireless Network" even though I want to select "Ethernet", b/c the relay base station is fed (via its WAN port) from an ethernet connection via a LAN port on the source base station that is creating the wireless network.
    What am I missing?
Is there some default IPv6 setting I need to turn off? Wireless restrictions to remove? I don't get why this isn't working.

If you have your two AirPort interconnected by Ethernet, then you do NOT want to configure it for an extended network. Instead, you want to configure them into a roaming network. An "extended" network configuration is only used when there is a wireless connection between base stations.

  • Why does my airport utility always ask me to connect an ethernet cable when I would like to use the extended network option?

Why does my airport utility always ask me to connect an ethernet cable when I would like to use the extended network option?

Please locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. Hard to see.....gray lettering on a white background....so you may likely need a magnifying glass and good lighting to see it.
The model number starts with a "A" followed by four numbers. If you see A1084 or A1088, unfortunately AirPort Utility 6.x in Mavericks OS X (10.9.4) does not support these older models. However, you can still administer these models if you have a Mac.....or can borrow one for a few minutes....using Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow Leopard (10.6.x), or a PC with AirPort Utility installed on the device.

  • Is there a way to use an "Extended" network on an AT&T iPhone

hello all! I have an iPhone 5 on AT&T. In some spots I have spotty coverage, and I'm wondering if there's a way to "Rollback" to an Extended or Partner network like the Verizon iPhone does? Thanks!

I found the following on a Verizon web page entitled "Determining Verizon Wireless Service Coverage":
"When the roam indicator is flashing or the banner display reads Extended Network, home airtime rates still apply, but additional features and services may not be available.
"When the roam indicator is solid or the banner display reads Roaming, roam rates apply and digital features and services are not available."
The distinction seems to be mainly one of price, but also of services.
As far as I can tell, AT&T has only one sort of (domestic US) roaming, but Verizon has two different terms.
As far as I can tell, since AT&T doesn't charge for domestic voice roaming, there is no switch to enable or disable it. You can switch data roaming off and on.

  • Windows XP laptop can't connect to Airport Extreme used to extend network.

Have a time capsule for main wireless. PC works fine connecting to it. Have added Airport Extreme to extend network. The mac sees it fine and the PC can connect to it via airport utility but won't connect as wireless and the internet. Running WPA2. Have the latest firmware in each. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for clarifying. If you don't mind, let's double-check your extended-network setup configuration:
o Open AirPort Utility and select the Time Capsule (TC), and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click Wireless.
o Verify that both “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu and “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox are selected.
o Next, select the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Verify that “Extend a wireless network” has been selected from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu. Also verify that the correct Network Name is shown for the network you want the AEBSn to extend.
    Do your settings match these?

  • Setting up an extended network from extreme with express

    Hi,
Let me just explain what I am trying to do and I would love any help or suggestions.
I have the modem going into the airport extreme.  The extreme is about 30 feet away, hard wired and hanging upside down in my hallway (should it be on the wall or upside down on ceiling?) From the airport extreme I have a cable going to a 8 port hub which I have my PS3, XBOX 360, Roku, Apple TV, 3D DVD and two 3D Tv's hooked up so there all hardwired.   Another cable is coming from the airport extreme and I want to take that further into the house down the hallway and wire that into an aiport express which would then boost my signal.  Is my thought process wrong there? I know I can do all that with my airport extreme, and then putting my airport express within range of the extreme I can wirelessly extend the network but I was thinkning I could have a wifi network from the extreme and then have the airport express hardwired to boost the network instead of it boosting it wirlessly.  If I am not making sense let me know.  I had the airport express extending the network wirelessly but it was not helping at all.  Both are brand new, the extreme and the express.  The wireless clients are all new also, new macbook, macbook pro, 2009 iMac, 3 iPhone 4's and 2 iPad 2's so I am pretty sure there all wireless N devices so it should not slow down  my network right?  I have no techincal background, just learning this from reading forums etc so I am trying to give all information that I can think of thats useful.  Please ask any question and I will answer, I just hope I can figure something out.  I live in a 1400 square foot apartment so it surprises me that the extreme (new dual band etc) doesnt give me internet everywhere let alone with also having an airport express extending the network.  In the back two bedrooms and bathroom which are down the hallway and about 25 feet from the extreme have signal that is so bad that sometimes I cant even read simple RSS feeds let alone download app updates etc on my devices.  I have setup the airport extreme to have both 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks and I see them both on all devices except for my iPhone.  I have changed the channels for both frequencies by using Tumblr I believe it was and seeing what channels all the networks around me are.  My present internet speeds aer 18mbs down and 2 mb up when I am sitting next to the aiport extreme and in direct line of sight.  This also holds true on my iMac and laptops in the same room.  The laptops in the backrooms get internet and I can do more with them than my iOS devices but even on there I have a hard time streaming etc.   I am trying to get internet back there for my sons room, I have a wifi camera that I want to setup in there and so he can use an iPad there (he is 20 months which is why I want the camera) and for my room I have another Roku and Apple TV that barely get signal and are constantly buffering.
I am about to wall mount the exstreme with an airmount and am looking to permanently set everything up so please any suggestions, or hints, or things I need to be aware of please do tell. I would hate to mount everything and run the cables etc and miss something obvious.  I appreciate your guys help and thanks for taking the time to read this.
    basically
modem =  airport extreme, that = (8 port hub)+(wired to aiport express) the express would then put out a wifi network to go along with the aiport extreme.

The extreme is about 30 feet away, hard wired and hanging upside down in my hallway (should it be on the wall or upside down on ceiling?
The ceiling will normally provide the best coverage in a typical room. The whole idea here is to limit obstructions between the AirPort Extreme and devices receving the wireless signal. Wall mounting can work well, again with the idea being to provide a clear signal path to devices.
Another cable is coming from the airport extreme and I want to take that further into the house down the hallway and wire that into an aiport express which would then boost my signal.
This type of configuration will provide the best bandwidth for the wireless network, and also allow you to locate the AirPort Express where it work most effectively. You want to configure what is known as a "roaming" network. The AiirPort Express will be configured using the same wireless network name, security setting and password as the AirPort Extreme. It is mandatory that the AirPort Express be configured in Bridge Mode when you do this.
Apple's instructions for this are in this link:
