Using tethering in Aperture

When using tethering in Aperture, is it possible to have the shots appear behind a pre-designed layout for composition control?

Allen -- Frank and Neil have giving excellent answers.  Personally, I found Betty Edwards lessons to be better than her science.  You might also look for Harold Speed's book on drawing (was available in a Dover edition), as well as (in a different vein) James Watrous' excellent "The Craft of Old Master Drawings".  But the _very best_ advice I can give you is:  don't read; draw.  Just get a bunch of #2 pencils (with erasers, they have always been used), and _draw every day_.  Drawing is a skill.  Skill increases through repetition and active engagement.  For adults, the biggest hurdle is accepting that they draw with the skill of someone who has rarely drawn (hence the exercises to "short-circuit" the squelcher in your brain).  Start with ... carrots.  Peel them, cut them into 1/2 to 3" lengths, set three or four pieces before you, and copy their outlines and the edges between the flat faces left by the peeler.  Concentrate on the angle of the lines on the paper (vertical, horizontal, by how much), and how they correspond to the 3D forms of the carrot pieces.  This is hard, but your drafting skills will have given you the (invaluable) ability to imagine forms in space.  Set in the corner of your eye a meter gauging when the paper is _activated_.  I'm not going to define that -- you'll have to feel for it.  Learn how to tingle this awareness, and tingle it constantly.
When you feel comfortable with this, set the carrots up on a piece of paper, and after your first drawing, rotate the paper 30° and do a second drawing.
Other variations will occur to you.
And in the meantime, carry a sketchbook with you and when you see an interesting leaf, draw it.
When you're ready to try plants you'll know.
Drawing animals is hard.  Start with sleeping ones.
Drawing people is _very very very hard_.
To repeat the important parts:
- draw _often_.  Frequency is more important than duration.  As Michelangelo said to his students: "Not a day without a line!"
- be kind with yourself.  No-one was born drawing well (drawing prodigies are extremely rare -- Durer was one).
- carry a sketchbook
- stick with one tool for a good bit.  Pencil is great.  If you prefer something else, use it.
- learn to create form (the effect of 3D) with line.  Shading comes later.
- _activate_ the page on which you draw.  Red-line that little meter in the corner of your eye.
When you have schooled your hand and judgement by such diligence, you will acquire rapidity before you are aware of it.
Leonardo Da Vinci
Above all else, have fun.  Post back at some point.  .

  • Capturing (Tethering) in Aperture 3

I have  one of my Nikon DSLRs tethered to Aperture 3 and have managed to doa  capture session.  The image files ppear in the project that I have directed them to.  However I can not open the images or edit them etc.  They appear in the browser within Aperture but thay will not open.  If I try to use a comand through the adjustment HUD for example, the file privew will dissapear seemingly to be lost forever.
Are the files being stored in some other location, thought he privews (if that is what they are) seem to be in the project I want them to be in. I ahve tried all right click dropdown options to see if there is aanything that may be obvious to get the images to load so they can be edited.  No luck.
Does anyone know what is going on here ?
    Thanks.
    Iain.

When you started the session did you specify the files to be stored in a location other than the Aperture Library? If so make sure Aperture can still connect to this location. Aperture won't be able to find referenced files if the drive is unavailable or you have moved the images using Finder. If this is the case there will be an little yellow triangle in the bottom right corner of the image warning you it can't find the referenced files.
If you've moved them you'll have to use File>Locate Referenced Files to reconnect to their new location, you'll only have to do one, it should find all the rest by itself.

I ordered my Macbook Air with Aperture two years ago. I now have an iMac - can I use that with Aperture in any way? I appreciate that it is a different computer but I am now the end user of both devices and I was just wondering if it was possible.
    Thanks,

The answer would be in your software license agreement for Aperture. However if you cannot locate it you can ask in the Aperture forum, the link for that is:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/professional_applications/aperture
However I believe you can have Aperture installed on two machines however only one may be using it at a time.
On the new iMac launch the Mac App Store - Purchased - look for Aperture and download to your new machine.

We'll know when it happens, Lucht - software companies don't make support promises in advance.

    Thanks Sean,
I've had a look at the TC settings dialog and tried to keep it as simple as possible. I also had a copy of LR 4 on the hard drive so have trashed that also incase of any conflicts. LR seems to be running ok now but as said it's an intermittent problem.
I also have a copy of Capture One on the hard drive so am going to uninstall that also in case it is trying to launch.

  • Has anyone actually used tethering please?

I have the unlimited data plan and the Sierra Wireless card ($60 a month unlimited)
I could save $45 a month using tethering ($20 for the tethering, $25 2gig plan, but not unlimited anymore).
Has anyone used tethering? Main thing I want to know - can you make and receive a phone call whilst being on the internet/email etc. If not, will not shift from my current set-up.
Be grateful for any response please.

i've never used more than 300MB of data in the last year, but at the same
time, i'd be afraid of going over the 2GB once i have the tethering!
and what if i decide it's not for me, will i be able to revert to my unlimited data plan???
    decisions, decisions....
If you stream a lot of big content (download torrents, movies, etc.) or watch a lot of movies or stream a lot of radio (my friend leaves Pandora on at night to go to sleep to), then it will murder you.
If you're with AT&T, you cannot return to the unlimited plan once you leave it.

  • Can I change the IP-address range when I'm using tethering

    Hi,
I am trying to change the local IP-address range my iPhone is providing when I'm using tethering.
    Is it possible ?

Agreed. I have migrated a central controller from one continent to another - to totally different machines and IP addresses - so your task should be a doddle. David has listed the steps.

  • Can't Store Files in correct folder when Tethering in Aperture 2

    Hi everyone,
I've been using Aperture 2 for two years now tether shooting with a Nikon D300 with no major problems with only minor problems along the way.
I'm now having problems when tethering storing my particular files in its designated folder. I have all my projects organized and referenced folders that mirror how my projects are organize. Its just one particular project and now I can not store file in its designated folder. When starting to tether, I can choose the correct project and from the Store Files drop down box, the designated folder is grayed out and I can't select the folder I want the images to store in.
If I select "Choose" from the drop down box, and then select the designated folder, Aperture selects the next folder down on the Store Files drop down box. It just started happening. I can correct the files location in Finder but thats just a nuisance. Its just this one folder thats giving me problems.
Any help would be appreciated? thx

  • How do I use iCloud with Aperture?

I want to synchronize the photos I shoot and load on my MacBook in Aperture to my desktop iMac. I've never used iCloud, but the setup instructions says this should work for Aperture users. The instructions say:
"Open iPhoto or Aperture and click the Photo Stream icon in the left column. Then click Turn On Photo Stream."
Well, there is no Photo Stream icon in the left column or anywhere in my Aperture program. What am I missing? Thanks for any help.
    Maria

Maria, have you enabled Photo Stream in the System Preferences > iCloud tab and in Aperture's Preferences?
Does your Aperture version support iCloud? You need at least Aperture 3.2.3
    See: iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
Choose Apple () menu > System Preferences. Click iCloud, then select Photo Sharing.
Turn on Photo Sharing in one of these applications:
iPhoto: Choose iPhoto > Preferences. Click iCloud, then select Photo Sharing.
Aperture: Choose Aperture > Preferences. Click iCloud, then select Photo Sharing.

  • Using Macbookpro with Aperture photos on external hard drive

I have now just about filled up my macbook pro. So I am now moving my pictures folder to an external drive. I have never done this before but it looks straight forward. After the transfer I just restart aperature and help it find the library.
But here is the question. I would like to bring my laptop on trips, take pictures, manipulate them in aperture. Then when I get home I would like to put those photos into the external drive.
I am confused about how to do that?

    Bob,
I am currently using MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz with 4 GB DDR2.
Since day one I have used an external portable hard drive that has all images stored on it.
No images are stored on the MacBook.
Currently I am using a portable LaCie 250 GB running with Firewire 800.
Nearly 10,000 images at the present time.
Use a USB 500 GB portable external hard drive for the Vault (backup).
Have had no problems working this way.
I am looking to purchase a larger portable LaCie (500 GB) soon.
