Using the address book as an LDAP DB

Hi,
I was wondering if there was a project that enables the address book application to act as an LDAP server? or an LDAP server that can easily be configured in order to use the mac address book as its database.
This way it could be used by any mail client (other than mail).

You might want to take a look at Addressbook X LDAP (or it's free companion Addressbook 4 LDAP) available at http://www.j2anywhere.com. ABxLDAP allows the transparent sharing of contacts by transfering them to a shared LDAP directory. It has support for multiple schema and can also be extended.

  • How do I use the address book feature which allows you to connect your contacts to their social networking profiles? (in Lion)

When I look up the 250+ new features of Mac OSX Lion, under address book, there's a new feature that interests me.
"Address Book lets you quickly access the social network profiles for your contacts, including Facebook. Press and hold an email address to select the appropriate profile."
Somehow I can't get it to work. What do I do?

Make sure it's on the Template (see the entry for Twitter):
Then update the contact with the relevant info.
For Twitter you can then click and hold the Twitter tag to either View Profile or Send Tweet.

  • Will the Address Book be improved in Leopard?

    Hello,
I am intensively using the Address Book in Tiger to store all the contact information for my small business, and am starting to find its limitations.
I would like to know which improvements are expected for the next version in Leopard. Depending on the answer I may have to consider moving to a more "professional" software like Entourage or Act, but I would strongly prefer not to!
In particular, I would need to organize the Groups into folders or hierachies of groups. I already have more than 20 groups and it's not user friendly to browse them.
I am also using Smart Groups that search into the Notes of each contact for flags like "TO CALL" or "TO MAIL". I hope there will be an integration with iCal.
    Thanks a lot,
    Felipe

address book should make it easier to input different names and
titles within the same company. now i find i have to retype the
address lines each time i enter different people in the same company.
Agreed but to make this process a little easier, after entering the first contact with a particular company, to add additional contacts with the same company and address, copy/paste the first contact to duplicate it and Edit the duplicated contact to change the new contact's name and telephone number, etc. Prevents having to retype the company address at least.

  • Mail app using old Address Book group list

I have a strange problem. Using OS 10.7.2 and iCloud on my mac. I just removed all of the entries from a group contact in Address Book and added new ones. It shows up with the new list when I check my contacts on-line on iCloud.com.
The problem is in Mail.app. When I create a new message and type the group name, it is somehow using an old list of contacts for that group. I deleted everything from the "Previous Recipients" list thinking that would help, but it didn't.
Any idea why Mail is not using the address book correctly?
    Thanks.

A computer restart seems to have solved the problem.

  • Couldn't Open the Address Book Database - Database is Corrupted

I get this error message anytime I attempt to modify a record in the address book. I also get this error when attempting to create a new group. I've attempted to restore the Address Book from backups via Time Machine as far 6 months ago.
I also did some poking around on the web and found an article advising to delete .plist files associated with the Address Book from my user > Library > Preferences Directory.
I did this but it continues to give this error.
I really need to update the Address Book or even export what I have and start fresh from reimporting my contacts. I don't know how to do this.
    Any help is much appreciated.

I followed the advice of Golden Shoes and everything appeared to work. I found out that I had spoken too soon. The next time I opened the Address Book none of the contacts were there. So, I've been doing an import when I need contact information. I import the vcard of all of the contacts I had exported. But, if I click on the File menu to Save them the Save option is greyed out and not available.
I thought that I might need a reinstall and my intention on getting Snow Leopard meant that I would wait until I upgraded to perform that install.
I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and the same problem exists but now it seems to have spread.
Now, if I take the empty address book and add a contact then save the Address Book (The save option is now availalbe). Then close the Address Book, Quite the Address Book and then launch it again, the contact record I added is not there.
Any help that can be provided would be much appreciated. I really want to use the Address Book to manage my contacts.
    Thanks in Advance

  • How do I make the iPhone use only the Address Book contacts?

I just spent some time cleaning up my Address Book on my Mac. I want to sync it back to the iPhone so that the phone shows the exact same contacts. How do I know what will override which contacts are used? I don't want the iPhone to merge anything, I want a clean start with the Address Book I just cleaned up.
Going forward of course I will want to keep contacts I've added on the phone, but for now the Address Book is most current.

    Hey Exit,
Click on the iPhone on the left side of iTunes, under Devices> Click Info above the picture of the iPhone> scroll to the bottom and check Contacts under Advanced Replace Information on this iPhone.
This will erase the contacts on the iPhone and replace them with contacts in Address Book.

  • HT204053 My wife just got this iPad mini and I want to copy the address book on my iPad 2 over to the mini. Can I use iCloud to do this?

My wife just got this iPad mini and I want to copy the address book on my iPad 2 over to the mini. Can I use iCloud to do this and what are the steps. The 2 devices have different Apple IDs.

Download the "My Contacts Backup" app from App Store to your iPad 2. Make a backup and send it by email to your wife's address. Open this email from iPad mini and tap the attachment to import the contacts into iPad mini Contacts app.

    Hi Jo,
If I'm interpreting this correctly, the Word file downloads correctly, but when you open it in Pages, the link(s) which your instructor has embedded in the Word file are not correctly translated into Pages.
If the link shows the actual address, you should be able to copy that and paste it into the location bar in Safari, press return, and get to the website that way.
An alternate route might be to download one of the open source Office applications, OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice, or NeoOffice. These are written to more closely emulate the behaviours of MS Word than Pages, and may provide better support for links embedded in Word files.

  • I am trying to create a group in the address book.  When I drag over the contacts from the contact list they duplicate in the address book. I am using "Lion"

    Hi cavu10horses,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  This article has instructions for changing a contact's photo using a photo from iPhoto's Faces feature:
Contacts: Add or change contact pictures
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11580
Select a contact or your own card, and then double-click the picture well.
    Select a picture:
Drag an image to the picture well.
Click Camera to take a picture.
If you have pictures in iPhoto, click the Faces button to use a face from iPhoto.
If the contact is linked (it’s in multiple accounts, but displayed only once in Contacts) and has multiple account pictures, click Linked.
Click Edit to edit the picture.
To zoom in and out of the picture, drag the slider. Drag the picture to change which part of it is visible.
To rotate the picture, hold down the Option key while you click and drag the picture.
To apply special effects, click the Effects Gallery button and choose an effect.
    Click Done.
    Cheers,

  • Using AT&T Unified Messaging, I am unable to make entries into the address book. If I try under Internet Explorer, It will take my entry. Is there something to make this work?

I go to the AT&T website um.att.com, sign in to my account, and everything works fine in terms of getting or sending messages. But I cannot enter anything in the address book (to store email addresses). If I go to the site using Internet Explorer instead of Firefox, I am able to make address book entries. I spoke to AT&T, and they suggested there might be some add-on app, but they did not know of anything.

There appears to be a problem with Firefox 20 with UNC paths when using roaming profiles on a server.

Only way I can figure is having double entries one with singular + some unique field, (maybe called Siri), then making a Smart group for one or both.

  • Using "Send Update" from the address book file menu.

I plan to use the "Send Update" from the File menu in Address Book to notify a large group I've created of my upcoming change of address. If a person on my list of people to to receive the update message has more than one email address, to which email address does Address Book send the message? All email address' of each person?
Also, I assume, from the email message window created when sending an update, recipients will see only the name of the group I created instead of all of the email addresses of all the people to which the update was sent. Have I assumed correctly?

How did you move your Thunderbird data from its default position?
If you had simply shifted your entire profile, the address book files would have moved too, so I suspect you've used the dangerous and inadvisable "Local Directory" option in Account Settinhgs to relocate specific mailstore files. :-(
I don't know of any way to set the path for address books. They are, it seems, required by design to reside in the user profile folder.
I don't like to advise use of the Local Directory settings, since doing so detaches message stores from your profile and makes profile management and maintenance a whole lot more difficult. Automated tools such as Mozbackup won't know to look outside the regular profile to safeguard your messages. All the published advice about profile management assumes you use the default locations which are within the profile. The Local Directory setting should, IMHO, be hidden inside the about:config editor for use only by power users.

  • Where is the address book and how do I use it?

I am new to Firefox and don't know how to find the address book and use it.

    Hi,
Firefox and other browsers are only for displaying web pages and web mails. The emails, address book, contacts etc. are all stored at the mail provider's end and Firefox never stores them, only displays.

  • How can I get the address book to sort by "Last" name (using v 31.3.0).

After a computer crash, I had to load Thunderbird (v31.3.0) back into my machine running Windows 8.1, and I successfully imported my address book back up file into Thunderbird (v31.3.0).
My problem is that I don't see an option to sort the address book by "Last" name, which was available with the version of Thunderbird I had before the crash.
How can I get the address book to sort by "Last" name?

    In 'Address Book'
    Select address book
    'View' > 'Show name as' > 'Last/First'
The you can sort by Name.
Either click on 'Name' column header to change sort order,
If reversed, then click on 'Name' column header again to reverse the order.
    Or
'View' > 'Sort By' > choose 'Name' and 'Ascending'
