Using the airport express

I am interested in streaming my iTunes music to my stereo. The airport express is ofcourse perfect for this but I have a few questions before I spend the money on this. I want to make sure I can do this.
I have an iMac up in my bedroom connected to a netgear wireless router. It is however connected using an ethernet cable and not wirelessly. I am using the wireless for my iBook downstairs in my kitchen. I don't want to extend the range of my network at all and I know I can't because my router dosen't support WDS. If my iMac is connected by cat 5, can I still stream music to the airport express on a seperate wireless network? Do I need to be on the same network as the airport express exclusively? I want to only use the airport express only for sending music to my stereo downstairs in my living room. Can the airport express be a device on my existing network??? I will not be using it for printer sharing or internet connection. Can this be done????
Thanks for your help!!!

I found the answer in the FAQ on the support page. I can set it to join the network in client mode. I went out and bought one and it connected in a snap and I am playing music all over my house!

Can you use the Airport Express A1264 as an Access Point and a DHCP server at the same time?
I would like to use it as a DHCP server and AP at the same time in my LAN (no internet, just local machines through a few switches). I was lead to belive this could be the case from a few networking friends that haven't been friendly enough to help me out setting it up.

I need it to act as a dLink/Cisco/Linksys/etc basic wifi router, in the fact that you can access it via wifi, and it will spit out DHCP addresses (192.168.1.xxx) to everything wired downstream of it.
I want to simultaniously provide a Wifi connection and a LAN connection at the same time
    Thanks,

  • Can i use the airport express in my hotel with wired connection?

I'm going to be traveling quite a bit coming up and staying in hotels with wired internet connections in the room.  Can i use the airport express to connect with the hotel's internet connection and then my ipad and/or iphone 4S?  I'm new to Apple products so will certainly appreciate any info that may help.  Thank you!

You will need to have AirPort Utility installed on the iPad and/or iPhone. It is free on the App Store
    App Store - AirPort Utility
Connect the AirPort Express 802.11n to the hotel Ethernet jack using an Ethernet cable
Power up the AirPort Express and wait 40-45 seconds
Tap Settings, then tap Wi-Fi on the iPad
Tap the AirPort Express under the heading of Set up an AirPort Base Station
AirPort Utility will take a moment to to analyze the connection and then you can proceed with the easy guided setup
Once the AirPort Express is configured, you should not have to set it up again at the next hotel. But, you could if you want to.

How many airport express can I add to my network for the purpose of using the airport express to send audio signal to different rooms in the house? I'm interested I'm running about six different zones.
What I'm looking to do is to have self powered in ceiling speakers in every room in my house with out having to run wires to every room to carry the audio signal. I would like to use the airport express to do the job of carting the audio signal.
Here's my set up now I have an airport extreme and one airport express that I use to carry audio to one room.

FWIW. I have used up to four AirPort Express Base Stations (AX) for streaming sucessfully in pretty much the way you have described. I didn't have a need to try more so I can't attest that more would or would not work.

  • Can I use the airport express with a desktop computer that is not wire less- I want to have wifi in the house for an iphone

Can i use the airport express with a desktop computer not wifi- I want wifi for my iphone

I can't seem to find any information anywhere.  It seems like it should work since the AX is showing up on his wifi settings on both his iPhone and iPod.  Not to mention the Apple "Genius" told him that it should work.  However, they also told him that it came with an ethernet, USB and the stereo patch cables...

  • Can I use the Airport Express as a cable modem?

I am trying to set up wireless internet in my home, and I am planning to purchase an Airport Express. Can I use the Airport Express as a cable modem, or do I have to purchase a modem from the ISP and then connect the AE to the output of the cable modem?
    Thanks,
    Adrian

No, the AirPort base stations do not perform the functions of a DSL or cable modem, so you will still need to acquire one.

  • Using the AirPort Express to Join an existing Wireless Network

    Hello,
I am hoping you can provide me with some help on this... I recelty acquired a PowerMac G4 with a 450 MHz processor, CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, Zip Drive, 1 GB RAM, and two 40 GB HD... The system has OS 10.4 installed, and it is has built-in Ethernet...
I was told I could use the Airport Express to connect to an existing wireless network, so I purchased an Airport Express base Station... Thing is, to e honest, I am having a bit of a problem getting started...
    - First, to connect from the AirPort Express to my G4, do I need a special kind of Ethernet cable, or will the usual kind do?
    - Second do I need to istall the software first, or have the Airport express connected to the G4 before I do?
How would I go about setting this up, step-by-step?
    Any information would be appreciated...
    Thanks for your time...

OK, thanks. Hopefully, the Netgear is creating a wireless network using WPA/WPA2 security. That will make it much easier for the AirPort Express (AX) to join the wireless network. It can join networks with using WEP security, but password issues almost always arise using WEP.
Since you must enter the exact security settings and password for the wireless network, it would help tremendously to know this in advance. Otherwise, it's going to be a series of "trial and errors" and likely frustration, later on.
When you have a moment, check the security settings on the Netgear router.
It might be one of the following: WPA2 Personal, WPA/WPA2 Personal, WEP 128, WEP 40.

  • Can I use the Airport Express to create a secure wireless network in a wireless-only hotel?

Can I use the Airport Express to log onto an unsecured hotel wireless network, without an ethernet cable, to create a secure wireless network for my MacbookAir, IPad, IPhone, etc.? If so, how is that done?

will the Airport Express allow you to log onto a hotel wireless network, and broadcast a secure wireless network in your room for your wireless devices, like the Ipad, Iphone, etc.?
The bottom line with a single AirPort Express is no.
The AirPort Express can only "extend" a wireless network when the network is being provided by another Apple router.
As you might imagine, it is extremely unlikely that that the hotel network....which no doubt uses professional wireless access points provided by a manufacturer of commercial systems.....would be compatible with an AirPort Express.
In many years of travel domestically and internationally, I cannot recall a time when a single AirPort Express would "extend" the signal provided by a hotel's wireless network.
However, if you had two AirPort Express devices handy, you might be able to configure one to "join" the hotel network and provide an Ethernet signal to the second AirPort Express, which would be configured to "create" your own "private"  wireless network.

  • HT3728 I do not need another wireless network but want to use the airport express for printer access only.  Can this be done and how?

I do not need another wireless network but want to use the airport express for printer access only.  Can this be done and how?

You can configure the AirPort Expess to "Join a wireless network" and enable the Ethernet port so that Ethernet devices will be able to connect.
In order to print from the iOS devices, you will need to have an application like Printopia installed on your Mac. The Mac must be active when you want to print.
More details here: Printopia - AirPrint to Any Printer - Print from iPad - Print from iPhone ...
There is a free trial available for Printopia, so make sure that it will work before you buy the AirPort Express.

  • I am currently using the Airport Express to work with a Bose Wave radio.  3.5 MM jack out and phono connectors into Bose.  Is there a way to hook to a new Bose Wave which does not have phono input plugs?

I am currently using the Airport Express to work with a Bose Wave radio.  3.5 MM jack out of the Express and phono connectors into Bose.  Is there a way to hook to a new Bose Wave which does not have phono input plugs?

The latest Bose Wave SoundTouch music system still uses a single 3.5 mm analog Aux port. You would connect the two using an analog audio cable with 3.5 mm stereo jacks on either end.
An example cable would be located here.

While using the airport express can I listen to music streaming from the Internet?

The music must be in your iTunes library.
Or, you can try to add a special application like Airfoil that may allow you to stream any audio signal on your computer to the AirPort Express. It might work.

  • How do I use the airport express to connect a remote PC via ethernet cable and access the internet via wireless connection, How do I use the airport express to connect a remote PC via ethernet cable and access the internet via wireless connection

Trying to connect my xbox to the airport express. Have wireless in home and do not have a ethernet point behind tv/xbox. How do I configure the airport express to connect to my wireless network and then the airport express can use its connection via ethernet to connect the xbox to the internet.

Is your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) a 802.11n model? If it is, you can reconfigure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge or ProxySTA. This would allow the AX to join another wireless network and have its Ethernet port enabled for wired clients, like the Xbox 360.
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility.

  • How do I set up a guest account using the AirPort Express  2nd Generation?

I Just purchased a new 2nd Generation AirPort Express.  The features list and the set-up guide says that I should be able to set up a guest account, but nowhere have I found how to do this.  I am running AirPort Utility 5.6 on my MacBook Air under Lion and I even get a message that I should not make updates using version 5.6 because it is not the appropriate version for the 2nd generation AirPort Express. Software Update says there's nothing new for me. When I search the Apple support site there is not even a version of AirPort Utility 5.6.1 for Lion though there is one for Snow Leopard.  Even when I installed that version on my Mac Mini running Snow Leopard, I could see no way to create a guest account.
I came across a YouTube video describing a demonstrating how to set up the guest account on Time Capsule and the AirPort Exteme. There it's quite obvious because in the General section there is a tab for setting up the guest account.  There is no such tab in either version 5.6 of the AirPort Utility I'm running under Lion or version 5.6.1 running under Snow Leopard.
    What am I missing?
    -Bill

Apple assumes that you are connecting the AirPort Express to a simple modem....not a modem/router or gateway type of device......that provides both modem and router functions in one enclosure.
If you have the AirPort Express connected to a gateway device, the Express is detecting that another router is present on the network, so the Express operates in Bridge Mode to prevent the conflicts that would normally occur when two routers are on the same network.
Open AirPort Utility 5.6, select the AirPort Express and click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon, then click the Internet Connection tab
If the Connection Sharing setting is currently configured to "Off (Bridge Mode)", the Guest Network cannot be enabled with the type of "modem" that you have without breaking some basic networking rules.
