Using the Apple MacBook Pro

I am new to Apple, having been a PC user for the past 20 years! To be honest I should have moved to Apple years ago! However, I have a couple of fairly basic questions that I could do on PC but dont appear to be able to do so easily on a Mac.... Can anyone help???
a. To delete I can only delete backwards, is there a way of deleting text in front of the cursor? (i.e on a pc there is a delete key)
b. To got to the front or end of a line of text - Is this possible (On a pc there is home and end keys)
c. When you have multiple windows open, how can i see them all and then point to the one I want? (On a PC these were all minimized onto the bottom system bar) On the Mac, it doesn't seem to do this?

a. Fn+Delete = forward delete.
b. Option+PageUp = go to front of line. Option+PageDn = go to end of line.
c. Several options for this. Expose is one (System Preferences > Dashboard & Expose). There are commands (or hot corners) to Show All Windows, Show Application Windows, and Show Desktop. For the F keys (top row) that normally control hardware, Fn+Fkey will activate Expose. Another option is ⌘-Tab, which is similar (but not the same as) Alt-Tab in Windows. ⌘-Tab cycles between open applications; ⌘-` (the key above tab) cycles between open documents within an application. You can also use ⌘-H to hide most applications (some have a different key command, but it will be in the Application menu (the one next to the Apple menu). Hide does just that, hides the app including all it's open documents. You can get back to it with ⌘-Tab, or by clicking on it's dock icon (active apps have a little triangle under/next to them.
Hope this helps...

  • Will the Apple MacBook Pro MA092LL/A be able to run Lion smoothly? Or will it weigh it down and make it run slow?

I am looking into upgrading my Macbook and I need to know if it will cause it to be extremely slow or if I should purchase a newer model. I would like to stick with the one I have for money purposes.
    Its a 17"

    Intel Core Duo
    2.16 GHZ
    2GB of Memory
    667 MHz Bus Speed
500 GB, 7200 RPM Hard Drive
    With these specs.

Thank you for helping me out on this.
I think I will end up buying a new machine.
Though, I will look in the refurb section.
    Thanks for all the advice.

  • I have the Apple MacBook Pro MC723LL/A and I need a new battery.

Which one would I buy? Thanks

No, that one is for the pre-unibody MBPs models "early 2008" and older that had user-removeable batteries (and silver keyboards). Won't work in the newer "black keys" models like yours.
    If anything, it's this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB772LL/A/rechargeable-battery-15-inch-macbook -pro-aluminum?fnode=5a
However, the advert does not make it clear if it its limited to only certain mdles of 15-inch MBPs.
Best advice is in Leroy's post--take it to Apple and let then figure out which battery you need.
NOTE: Don't put too much faith in the negative reviews in the Store. When people post here that their battery failed prematirely, about 90 percent of the time their complaint includes. "I don't understand. I never use the computer on battery!"
These batteries will die young if not used. I try to run mine on battery once or twice a week.

  • Has anyone felt static shock through their earbuds when plugged into an airplane AC adapter using an Apple MacBook Pro with the aluminum shell?

I was flying home on an American Airlines 737.  I was watching a movie and my battery started to get low so I plugged my AC adapter into the underseat adapters.  This place had the standard 120 volt type plug not the 12 volt automobile type adapter.  As soon as I did I felt somthing sharp or shocking on my ears.  As it turns out when plugged I could feel static shock when any of the small metal portions of my earbud touched my ear and I could also feel static on the aluminum shell when I lightly rubbed my hand over it.  The flight attendant could feel the same thing.
    Has anyone else experieinced this?

Never. Just flew United 737 and was plugged in all the way. If that happened to me I would have disconnected from the power outlet. Probably a bad ground. Could you have tried the other outlet in the row?

  • Are the Apple Macbook pro affected by the heart bleed bug

Is MacBookPro affected by the Heart Bleed bug?

No. No Apple product is affected.
Servers that you may communicate with may be affected though, regardless of the devices you use to connect to them. There isn't anything you can do about that, other than to not use them. That essentially means isolating yourself from the Internet entirely, until such time millions of servers all over the planet are updated to address the vulnerability. No one can guarantee if or when that will ever happen, and by that time some other bug will have been discovered.

  • Has anyone actually used PS CS6 with the new Macbook pro?

There has been an awful lot of discussion about how the new macbook will work with CS6, mostly talk about the UI, but has anyone used it?  How does it work with the retina display (other than the UI)?  Yes, Adobe is going to make it retina compatible and we don't know if they will charge for the upgrade or not.  But I'd like feedback from someone who is using the new Macbook pro with CS6.
    Thanks!

Thanks.  I have scoured the forums and nobody has used it - or if anyone has, they haven't said squat.  Anyway, I took the plunge, downloaded the app and it is absolutely stunning on my rMBP.  Even though, as you say, it is at the pixel representation I've always had.  I can't wait until the update and full retina representation.
It is fast as blazes, sharp as a tack.  A beautiful thing.  I'll play with it some more to see how it performs.  But so far with some short tests, the rendering is almost instantanious and the colors are brilliant.
    So far, so good.

  • What happened to the 17" Macbook Pro?

I have been using the 17" Macbook Pro since they were created and they have suddenly dissapeared, do they still exist?

The 100% anti-glare is better, however for the MacBook Pro to turn into a iTablet, it can't have a anti-glare film as it's a touchscreen.
The 75% reduced glare likely has a process done on the screen itself to reduce glare, however it's possible to get over 99% reduced glare, but it's probally a military advantage/secret process and China (where Apple gets it's products made) will steal or demand the process in order for buisneses to do buisness in China (like Apple does)
See the picture and videos on this site, this type of glass/acrylic doesn't have any reflections, which would make a excellent touchscreen.

  • [SOLVED, mostly] Arch on Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch with Retina Display

I've been looking into the Apple MacBook Pro. Of course, I would want to get rid of Mac OS X and load up Arch. Please tell me if the following will work out-of-the-box or have workarounds:
    WiFi
    Ethernet
    Sound
    Touchpad
    Keyboard
    Charging
    Bluetooth
    Graphics Card
    Webcam
    Microphones
    USB 3.0 Ports
    HDMI Port
    SDX Card Reader
I know the high DPI display shouldn't be a problem since GNOME Shell now supports those, but I want to be able to use all of the above things. Also, please let me know if there are any other problems to look out for. Thanks.

I can't comment on your specific model, but IMHO, getting a Mac (especially a Mac laptop) to run Linux exclusively doesn't make much sense, for the following reasons:
Apple's EFI implementation is weird, and some features (most notably the ability to upgrade the firmware) can be done only with the help of OS X. As a practical matter, this means that you'll either have to use exotic tools like the Linux version of "bless" or boot the computer in BIOS/CSM/legacy mode -- and even then, upgrading the firmware will be a hassle, should that become necessary. Booting in BIOS/CSM/legacy mode is the easier path, and there's nothing wrong with doing it that way, but as the industry is moving away from BIOS and toward EFI, it means that either you'll be going in the other direction or you'll need to struggle with a Linux-only EFI-mode installation on the Mac.
Hardware support in Linux for Macs is a bit weird, in part because of the preceding issue (the weird Apple firmware). I realize your question is aimed at uncovering specific answers about this topic, but as a general rule, Apple hardware seems more trouble-prone under Linux than standard PC hardware. Also, note that hardware support can vary depending on the mode you use (BIOS/CSM/legacy vs. EFI). Video hardware can be particularly troublesome on some models, with BIOS/CSM/legacy sometimes working better.
Mac mice (including laptop trackpads) are 1-button devices, but Linux works best with 3-button mice. A 2-button mouse can do in a pinch. Using a 1-button mouse with X requires applying unusual workarounds involving the use of keyboard keys while clicking the mouse button. Although this can be done, it's an extra hassle, both to set up and to use. On a desktop computer, of course, you can just replace the mouse, but this isn't always practical with a laptop.
I haven't checked pricing recently, but Apple hardware tends to carry a price premium compared to similar hardware from other manufacturers.
Although most of these issues (with the possible exception of price, if you're on a tight budget) aren't really critical by themselves, they combine to create a rather unpleasant combination, at least when considering a Mac exclusively as a platform for running Linux. If you wanted to dual-boot with OS X, things would be different, of course, but personally, I wouldn't buy a Mac as a Linux-only computer.
If you've got specific reasons for wanting a Mac, perhaps you could post them here. Although I personally haven't shopped for a laptop for a while and so can't offer specific suggestions, somebody else might be able to suggest alternatives that would do what you want.

  • Is there a way to use two macs to run one app? I want to use my two macbook pros processors in a shared capacity.

I have two macbook pros a 2.4ghz and a 2.2ghz. Is there a way to use the other macbook pro to help with any cpu intensive apps like audio and video apps. I haven't had much luck on finding anything about sharing resources. It would be awesome if you could link up two macs and use both of them to power through processor intensive tasks.

    Yep here you go.

  • Apple Macbook Pro Retina with display issue Samsung LED

Once I have plugged the HDMI cable from Macbook Pro to Samsung 24" LED Monitor, the display remains black. Doesn't seemed like the samsung monitor recognised the Apple Macbook Pro at all. I have reset the PRAM and troubleshoot it with Apple and meanwhile still waiting for answer from Apple. They have acknowledged of the problem but there is no solution. Just letting everyone in the forum know that I have been a loyal user of apple for the past 20 years and this is quite embarassing to know that HDMI cannot work with a samsung LED monitor. In addition, I have been a Apple Tech and Sales.
Also, there are a lot of users out there who are having the same propblem,. This is certainly not good enough.
I still find it wayyyyy too early to blame Apple so generally. This other "lot of users" has a lot of home-made problems, such as incompatible displays, adapters, etc.
BTW, mind telling the exact display model number?
And thanks for the response further above.

Reboot, hold the option key down as soon as you hear the chime. When the Boot Manager appears select OSX instead of Windows.

  • I can't connect to my iTunes library on my Macbook Pro using the Apple Remote app on my iPhone 4S. Why?

    Hi all,
I've been looking through the forums for help with this problem. There are a couple of threads with similar problems, but no solved threads and the discussion doesn't seem to go anywhere... As far as I can tell, it's been causing a lot of annoyance for many users, including myself, but it looks like the community's in the dark about why it's happening!
I'm trying to connect to my iTunes library using the Apple Remote app on my new iPhone 4S. As you may know, there are two ways to do this:
Connect via Home Sharing by setting up Home Sharing on both iTunes and the iPhone, or
Connecting directly to iTunes using a four digit passcode.
I've tried both methods, and neither work!
Here's what happens for each method:
From the Remote app start screen, I tap the "Turn on Home Sharing" button. I enter my Apple ID details (which are definitely correct), and get a confirmation message on my phone saying "Home Sharing is on using [my email address]. To control iTunes: Choose Turn On Home Sharing from the Advanced menu in iTunes on your computer." I then go to iTunes, turn on Home Sharing, enter my Apple ID again and get a confirmation message saying "Home Sharing is now on", etc. However, there's no connection formed between my iPhone and my Macbook Pro - the Remote app just shows a message saying "Turn on Home Sharing in iTunes on your computer or on Apple TV using the account [my email address].
From the Remote app start screen, I tap "Add an iTunes Library", and the four digit passcode is shown on my phone. I select the new "Quintin's iPhone" item that appears in the iTunes sidebar under "Devices", and enter the passcode on the screen that appears. Once I've entered it, I get a confirmation message saying "Your Remote is now able to control iTunes" with an "Okay" button. Clicking the "Okay" button makes the screen and the sidebar item disappear completely. On my phone, a message that says "Looking for ..." is shown on the screen with a spinning loading wheel, but nothing happens. After a minute or two, it stops and simply says "Could not find".
After trying both methods, I went through all of the troubleshooting steps here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1741 . Absolutely no effect.
I should mention that I was experiencing similar problems on my old iPhone 3Gs with an older version of iTunes. I thought it might have been some kind of hardware fault and expected it to clear up once I got the new phone, but the problem is still there. It's a new phone, a new computer, a newer version an iTunes... even a different network I'm trying to connect to it on. Bizarre!
I've even tried using the Mobile Air Mouse remote application instead. However again, the Mobile Air Mouse app on my phone can't pick up the Mobile Air Mouse server on my Mac.
I'm kind of at the end of my rope here. Anyone?

I have the exact same problem trying to use the Remote app on both my iPhone 3gs and iPad 2 with either my Mac or ATV2.  My Remote app used to work on my phone - I can't recall if I ever actually used it with my iPad, but when I tried today, I got all the same results as you did (on both iPad, and then iPhone).  I  was using my ATV2 to play music from iTunes on my Mac and wanted to use the Remote app, but it would not connect to either device no matter what I did.

  • I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV?

I have an Apple MacBook Pro with 2 USB ports and a MiniDisplay Port. I also have an HDTV with a HDMI port. How can I use the TV as a display without any tethering wires between my computer and the TV? I have a MiniDisplay Port to VGA adapter, but there are two issues with it: The new display doesn't have a VGA port, and even if it did, I wouldn't want to have my mac constantly attached to the display by a cable. I was looking for a way to use the TV as a display without any wires. Is there some type of bluetooth setup I could use? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

As I wrote above, I think you should look into the Apple TV yourself. The best place to find information about what it can and can't do and to ask your own specific questions is probably in the Apple TV forum, here:

  • Will an Infra-Red Adapter work with a macbook pro retina display so I can use the apple TV remote for presentations?

I have always used the apple TV remote for my presentations.  I bought a retina display last year for the betterment of my presentations and now I have to stand near my computer and hit a button to change my slides where as before I used my remote.  Will a infra-red adapter work with the apple TV remote in the macbook pro retina display?  Love my computer, but very disappointed not to have a remote for presentations that does not need the internet.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Yes, I used that and it works great if you have wireless connection.  Im looking for  a remote that worked like the apple TV remote.  My questions is, "Is there a USB infra-red remote that works with mac.  I have found this one: Keyspan EZ1 easy presenter.  It claims with works with PC and Mac and the reviews are good.  Does anyone know anything about it or if it works with retina display macs?
