Using the iMac 27" display as a...Display

Hey,
I'm new to the forum, and I don't own a Mac (YET!!) but I'm really looking to treat myself. I was wondering if there was a way of hooking up a blu ray or other HDMI device to the iMac screen? It would make buying one a lot more attractive, as I would not need a TV.
Thanks!

This won't work quite the way you may think. You need a device like this:
http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=508267
The iMac will then display the resulting 720p signal pixel doubled to fill your display. You cannot display the native 1080p resolution of the blu-ray format. Whether it support audio depends on if you have the original 27" iMac or the latest model -- the newer ones will accept audio via the minidisplay port.

    How do I enable TDM?
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.
    How do I exit TDM?
To leave TDM, press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac that is in TDM. You can also exit TDM if you shutdown or sleep either computer or detach the cable.
Can I use a third-party keyboard or older Apple keyboard to enable TDM?
Some older Apple keyboards and keyboards not made by Apple may not allow Command-F2 to toggle display modes. You should use an aluminum wired or wireless Apple keyboard to toggle TDM on and

  • Using the iMac for display only?

I bought an iMac in 2008. I use it for the majority of my computing needs, and for the most part is serves my purposes for everything. One thing I would like though is more gaming power.
I have a PC tower that is not connected to anything at the moment and needs a little hardware work which I will do myself.
Since the iMac is not user upgradable, and the video/graphics card is not upgradable at all, I was curious if I was able to connect the PC tower to the iMac's screen and use it as a display for a gaming computer and disconnect the tower for regular computing.
While I'm asking, is there any external way to improve the graphics card for gaming that anyone is aware of?

...Its too bad the graphics card is not upgradeable. I'm also going to try and find out if there is some sort of external way to increase performance....
This is the inherent issue with all "all-in-ones", both laptops and desktops, both PCs and Macs. For the most part, they are not upgradable. You can replace HD and RAM, but pretty much everything else "is what it is" and upgrades are "external only." Don't hold your breath that you'll find any way to increase performance (video or CPU.)
In the long run, you may want to consider just selling the iMac and get a new Mac. A Mini or Mac Pro, both of which do not have built-in monitors so would require you to get a monitor anyway, then you could KVM it with the PC. (I have my Mini KVMed with a Dell Poweredge server, which is sitting under my desk.) Alternatively, the new 27" iMac does allow for video input so it could be used as a monitor for the PC.

  • When connecting Macbook Air to iMac, have to keep Macbook Air open in order to use the iMac as a display.

When I connect my Macbook Air to my iMac with Thunderbolt, I have to keep my Macbook Air open or else the iMac does not sense it. I've tried closing it to just use the iMac as the display, but then the iMac goes back to its regular screen. Also, I have to control everything from the MBA keyboard and touchpad- my iMac mouse and keyboard suddenly won't work. How do I fix this?

    Hi there,
Apple outline the steps to do so in the link I've posted below. If you need help with any of them, just shout.

  • My MacBook gets tweaky when I use the iMac as a display... suggestions?

When hooking up my MacBook Pro to my iMac (to use the iMac as a display, via Thunderbolt) it causes my MacBook to be tweaky, slow, taking too long to think, and then keeps Photoshop all the way to the right when I disconnect the iMac... any suggestions? I love using the big screen as a monitor, but need the luxury of the lap top for work (we travel a lot, and I cannot exactly tote around a giant 27' iMac...). I use Photoshop CS5 and I'm usually running it at the same time as Mail and Google Plus, but that's usually it. I have my Time Machine hooked up to back me up in case anything happens, of course, but I want the speed of the laptop even if it's hooked up to the iMac!
    Thank you!

Can the iMac work as a display the same as the Apple display?
Only if it's a 27-inch model. Other Macs require a VNC setup or ScreenRecycler, which will be much slower.

  • Using 2009 iMac as display for 2012 MacBook Pro

    Hi Jim on Apple,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

  • Can the iMac 24 display support 2 inputs i.e. can I conncet my Mini?

My PC is getting old and I'm thinking of switching to an iMac 24". I also have a PowerPC base mini currently shares the display with my Dell using a digital KVM. Is it possible to connect my Mini directly to the iMac 24 and switch the display between the 2 computers?
    thanks.

As there is no video input on the iMac, you cannot use the iMac as a display for the mini, but check out the program Steve mentions. I use Microsoft's Remote Desktop to control my PCs from my Mac and CotVNC is supposed to be even better.

  • Newbie question: Why is "learn sound model" greyed out when trying to remove background sounds in a file using the Spectral Frequency display?

I am trying to remove background sounds in a file using the Spectral Frequency display. The first edit on a new file, this process works fine:
    1. use brush to cover sound
    2. right click, learn sound model
    3. effects/noise-reduction-restoration/Sound Remover
The next time I try to remove another sound in the file, "learn sound model" is greyed out. I have to close the file and reopen to be able to make another edit. What on earth is going on? Can it only learn one sound model or something?
I'm a newbie, so thanks in advance for your advice!

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!

  • Using the iMac 27 screen with my macbook

    Hi there,
My wife has a Macbook Air and I've just ordered a 27" iMac (Dec 2012 model). Is it possible for her to plug her Macbook Air into the iMac via thunderbolt and use the larger display for the Macbook Air (much like you would with a thunderbolt display)?
Thanks for any help you can give

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
    It depends. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302
You have ordered a Late 2012 iMac, that has got Thunderbolt ports. If your wife has got a Mid 2011 or newer MacBook Air, you can use your iMac as an external display for the MacBook Air, because the MacBook Air has got a Thunderbolt port. However, if it's an older MacBook Air, you won't be able to use it because you can't connect a MacBook Air with Mini DisplayPort into another Mac with Thunderbolt to be used as a display.
If your wife has got a MacBook Air with a Thunderbolt port, just buy a Thunderbolt cable like this one and follow the steps of my link above to set up your iMac as a display.
If the MacBook Air has got Mini DisplayPort, you can still use the iMac as a display if you install a VNC client as ScreenRecycler on both computers. This application uses your network to use your iMac as a display for the MacBook Air and it works great, but it completely depends of the network

Of course. As both have Thunderbolt, it's as simple as buying a Thunderbolt cable, connect them and press Command and F2 keys on the iMac, so the iMac will be used as an external display for the MacBook Air. If you want more information, see > http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11302

  • HT1758 Can i connect my non apple laptop to my iMac and use the iMac as an extra/dual screen while using my laptop?

Got a new laptop from work, no choice on the type, but want to plug it's docking station into my iMac so I can use dual screens while using the laptop. Can I use the Ethernet port for this?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Target Display mode only supports Late 2009 and Mid 2010 27-inch iMacs, and Mid 2011 and newer iMacs to use them as external displays, but it only works over Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt, not Ethernet.
Your PC needs Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt (depending on your iMac) to be able to use your iMac as an external display, so it is probably that you cannot use the iMac as an external display. Instead, look for information in the Internet about VNC viewers that allow you to do that
