I am in the process of transferring files (marked by the years 2005, 2006 etc.) from my iPhoto to my iPod. Will I be able to transfer them back again? How? Is this a good and a wise way of saving my iPhoto collection, so that I can free up iPhoto itself on my iMac?

If your iPod is "enabled for disk use" then when you open it in Finder you'll find a number of folders, Photos, Contacts, Notes etc. Under Photos for instance you will find two depending on how you set your preferences, one will be thumbnails (photos optimised for viewing on the iPod) and if your preferences are set to copy over full resolution versions as well you'll see a folder for those. You just access the folders as you would if they were on your hard drive.

I went to the windows explorer page and checked under my computer and saw my ipod as the "E" drive. Is the procedure of storing files, be it word or excel or photos as simple as dragging them into the ipod E drive location???
I have tried doing this and they seem to have been copied into the ipod, however when I checked into the ipod they were not there...anywhere. I highlighted the "ipod(E)" drive and created a new folder named "my documents" and then dragged some word files into it. I then detached the ipod from my computer and checked the ipod for the files and the new folder "my documents" and could not find them.
When you use the ipod as an external hard drive are all the documents and files you drag into it hidden???
Is there any way to view word documents?? How do you store them?
When using the ipod, is the only viewable information that comes up onto the ipod screen, info from the "itunes" page??

You can't view any of the files on the iPod while using the iPod. You can only see them through the computer. I guess if you want, you can put the files into the "Notes" folder on the iPod and see them using your iPod, but you can only open .txt files up to 4kb big.

The music files, were they bought from your iTunes account or did someone gift them to you after buying from the iTunes account? If they are yours you can download them again if you clear or de-authorise the ipod, it has to be done by whoever gave you the ipod to do this (the registered owner). If they were bought for you on another itunes account I don't think Apple let you use them as they are copyrighted and they don't belong to you, they belong to the person who bought them. If the music files where ripped from music cd's then click and drag them to a new folder on your desktop and have the person who gave you the ipod to de-authorise and unregister it. Then you re register it and put your files back from your desktop folder in your iTunes folder and synch. Hopefully that would work. Any files which you did not buy, I would not know how get around this, best bet is to take it to you nearest Apple Store and explain that they were gifted to you and ask how you can use them. The best way to gift music files is to buy the gift tokens and give these. Hope above helps.

I have been using my 30GB iPod Video as a hard drive and decided to make a backup of everything important in case something happened to my iBook. After the initial backup, I decided to delete that file off the iPod and run the backup again just to see if I could do one easily whenever I thought of updating the backup file.
After deleting the backup file from the iPod as I normally would on a computer, Backup tells me that the iPod doesn’t have enough space when trying the backup a second time.
It’s almost as though the iPod kept the original backup file on there and has it taking up space, but I just can’t see it.
Anyone know how to fix that?

Can I use my iPod as a hard drive?

In addition to listening to music and looking at photos, I would like to use my iPod as a hard drive. I was able to set the switch to do this on my Mac Powerbook in iTunes. But I want to transfer some files to my desktop PC. I don't want to put the same music on my PC and Mac! I never use the PC to listen to music. But I would like to use the harddrive feature. I'm afraid that if I try to connect to the PC using iTunes it will erase my music and make me start all over again. Is there any way to set a switch on the PC so it can see the files on the the iPod?

In case your iPod has been used initially on your Mac:
If you want to use your Mac formatted iPod as ext HD on a Mac as well as on a Windows PC you will loose all your iPod content once, as your iPod has to be re-formatted on a Windows PC using the latest Windows-Ipod-Updater.
Having done so - although not supported by Apple - your Windows formatted iPod will work on a Mac as well as on a Windows PC.

I'm using my iPod classic as hard drive to transfer the music to my reinstalled computer but the file "iTunes" is missing. Where is it and how can I get it back?

I had a virus on my Windows Vista PC so I had to reinstall the whole system. With this I also got an upgrade to Windows 7. Now I want to use the iPod classic to put the music back on the PC. According to the explanations on Apple support you have to drag the iTunes file on the iPod to the My Music file. Unfortunately there is no iTunes file on the iPod. It does work fine though and I can listen to all the music. I have to say that before I deleted the hard drive fro the PC I forgot to switch the iPod to manual sync. It was psooible though to do that with the new installed iTunes without erasing the music on the iPod. Can anybody help? I really wouldn't like to loose the countings and playlists.

Yes, you can put any type of file which you can use on your computer onto your iPod, as long as the file is smaller than 4GB. It is possible to use an iPod for data and music at the same time as long as the iPod is in either FAT32 or HFS+ format; all iPods ship in one of those two. Is it true? You can't use video iPod as a hard drive?

I can't believe that Apple would reduce the functionality of a new product, but I have heard that due to the absence of firewire, you actually can't use the new video iPods as hard drives.
Does anyone know if this is really true?
Half the reason for buying the 60G is to be able to backup files that are too big for a DVD...

I read of all the things that go wrong restoring Time Machine backups.. particularly stupid things like mail, photo libraries don't go back.. etc. And looking through the incredible number of issues people have here, when their Mac finally takes a dive how hard it is to restore.
I restored a test hard disk from a TC.. and it takes ages and ages to even make up its mind to start.
I worked in computer support for ages, but not Macs.. so my experience is ghost.. ghost images.. on large commercial server setups, can stream restore to multiple computers at once.. even doing it computer by computer the image is simple as network boot to restore. But ghost went the way of Symantec.. sigh!! And was destroyed.

Can backup a Hard disk in just about any format.. yet to try it on a Mac to a TC.. but I will. Boot from CD.. instead of your lost Lion partition which no longer exists (because the hard drive had to be replaced) and the DVD they no longer give you, and restore the entire hard disk in a couple of hours .. to the exact image at the point you made the clone.. in any format, with any partitions.
My bet is that it will kill TM .. but you could be right.
It is just the prospect of all those permission changes, photos and mail libraries etc that worry me.

i had synced some 15 gb music onto my 120 GB ipod for a holiday .
In my holiday i took some 5 gb of photos which i decided to backup on my ipod. So i put the Ipod to USB into the computer, the ipod device opened from my computer icon, and i copied and pasted the photos
Now, when i try to open my ipod from my computer, and i click on the photo folder, i get a message, please insert disk into drive E. I get the same message if i try to open any folder. All the folders in the ipod show 0 KB. The ipod playlists of music have dissapeared.
But they ARE there, because the pie chart on my computers, ipod icon shows 20 gb used in 120 gb. So how do i access this photo data.

Not sure why it's happened, but you could try resetting the password. These instructions work for Lion & Mountain Lion. If you're on Snow Leopard you'll need to use the install disk that came with the Mac.

Not at the same time, if that's what you mean, unless you connect the drive to one computer and share it via file sharing to the other computer. To have a drive connected to more than one computer at the same time, the drive has to have special circuitry to arbitrate the multiple requests; such drives are usually marked as SAN (storage area network) drives.

I phoned Apple Care to ask the same question as I changed the stock RAM sticks and hard drive a month ago.
I even phoned up twice and spoke to two different staff to make sure I get the same answer.
Basic as the previous post stated, the warranty remains the same apart from the new parts you replace. However, Apple Care people told me if something went wrong when you are installing the new parts, then your warranty is not valid.
The process itself is pretty easy, I believe there are instructions on how to do it in the manual. There are also lots of videos on YouTube as well. You can also get Apple approved repair center to do the change if you prefer.
P.S. I kept the original RAM sticks and hard drive incase something goes wrong. Then I can simply put them back in the macbook to see if its the additional parts which are coursing the problem or the rest of the stock system. This will help me greatly when it comes to claim warranty repair.

This is asked several times a day.. obviously people are struggling with their latest SSD being too small.
The TC is not suitable for network file server.. but many people having no choice press it into service as such.
It cannot be partitioned. It was and is and ever shall be a backup device for Time Machine.
Major issues.
1. No backup.. no way Time Machine can backup a network drive. No place to backup to.. So all your files will be at risk. And you will need to buy a third party like CCC to do backup.
2. The TC cannot be partitioned and mixing TM backups and data is not great.
3. The drive is slow to spin up and quick to spin down.. there is no controls.
4. iPhoto in particular can easily corrupt its entire library with wireless networking causing a disconnection to one photo. Even if you do this;;; do not move your photo library... you have been warned!!
5. iTunes will constantly lose connection to the library. The disk is too slow to respond.. itunes on the computer will constantly spit out errors. Even in the midst of streaming the TC can spin down the disk due to caching.
6. Do not use any live files on the TC no matter what else you do.. if you edit files in whatever program the file must be on the local hard disk.
7. The only suitable location for most libraries is a computer. You can plug in an external hard disk.
