Using the iPod docking connectors

I bought myself an iPod with color display a little while ago, and yet it only came with one connection to a USB port on either the power supply or the computer. I bought an earlier iPod a long time go and we ended up having to get a new connecting cable for it to hook up to my computer.
Here is the question...
Is it possible to use an older iPod's dock connection with an iPod with Color Display? I only want to use the old one to connect it to my computer to update the songs and playlists I have, and yet I'm afraid it will kill my iPod or my computer.
I just don't like having to disconnect my iPod and reconnect every time I want to switch from power to computer update, and I don't want to spend my money on a new connecting cable.

Use can use any cable that has the dock connector. The connector is the same.

  • Does the nano use the same dock connector cord as a 3rd generation iPod?

I currently have a 3rd gen iPod (touch wheel w/ four buttons above it) and am looking to upgrade to the new iPod Nano. Will all my old accessories be compatable with the nano? - Dock connector, AC adapator, car charger etc. Thanks in advance.

I made the same switch - 3G iPod to 3G Nano, and it all works, even the dock! Of course, even though the dock connector works, the sizes of the two are difference, so anything that the 3G iPod fit perfectly in will be too big for the nano - but that has nothing to do with the connector.
A little trick you may not have though of - if you have a Firewire cable for your old iPod, you can connect the new nano to the charger that came with your 3G iPod - it won't sync, but it will charge.

  • Are Multiple Camera's supported using the iPod Camera Connector?

    Hi,
This question is not about which camera is supported but about the possibilities to connect multiple digital Camera's to the same iPod.
Is this possible and how (if even possible) will the pictures be identifyable as coming from the different camera's being used?
Thanks for an answer which may lead to a new iPod user.

    Hi there,
    Thanks for your answers!
About the only way to tell the photos apart is by
filenames. If you connect the iPod to the PC and
browse it as an external disk, you will see a
    /Photos/xxxApple/yyyyy.JPG directory structure. xxx
increments up from 100. In my case, my camera has
photos with file names of DSCxxxx and my son's were
IMG_xxx so it was easy to tell which directory came
    from each camera. YMMV.
Ok. This means it's no option for me (knowing that one of my friends has got exactly the same camera).
Each time you download photos from camera to iPod, it
creates a "roll" (everything from that download in a
single directory) showing number of photos, date and
time, plus total size. You scroll down the menu from
roll to roll and then can browse/view the photos from
each roll on the iPod. My only gripe is that you can
delete an entire roll from the iPod but can't delete
    a single picture.
Ok. Thanks for sharing this info.
For the deletion: I think I have to start livingi with this and remove the unwanted pictures on the camera first or later on the PC.
In my case, I was downloading 50 (one memory stick)
or 75 (two) pictures from my camera, then 100 or so
from my son's (total of 3 "rolls"). After that the
iPod was still over half charged. One day I may have
done 1 or 2 more rolls (downloads). I wouldn't be
surpised if you managed 300-400 pictures downloaded
per charge. I typically just charged the cameras and
iPod each night and then took pictures all day,
downloaded the photos, and then charged again (with
some downloading mid-day on occasion). In your case,
sharing with lots of folks you may hit the battery
limit on the iPod. iPods charge pretty fast, you
might want to investigate a car/lighter USB adapter
to plug in if you are away from regular power.
Again, thanks for sharing this with me (us).

  • 3rg gen ipod dock connector not working with new imac on leopard 10.5.1

Recently found that my 3rd gen ipod is not working properly when i connect it using its dock. itunes just freezes and comes out with some "disk insertion error". however, when i don't use the dock and connect the ipod to the imac directly using its own firewire cable, everything is ok and working properly.
it seems to be the ipod dock that is the problem. but am wondering why wouldn't it work? any ideas? I'd still like to be able to use the ipod dock...
    thanks.

  • I have an order iPod classic (2007). I also have a Boise docking station. I can use the ipod with earphones

I have an order iPod classic (2007). I also have a Boise docking station. I can use the ipod with earphones or the computer however there is no sound when placed on the docking station. I don't believe it is the docking station as it is never moved, only I use it (older and single). Could it be a setting? Help

iPods, iPhones, and iPads aren't tied to one particular iTunes accout/Apple ID.  So there are no special instructions to follow to allow you to sync it with your newer account.  Simply sync it as you would your iPhone 4.

  • Can you use the iPod connector cable to charge the iPhone or

only the cable that came with the iPod?
Also, I put the iPhone briefly into my old inMotion speakers and a message
came up saying that the device didn't support an iPhone and would either not
charge my iPhone or have bad consequences for my iPhone-i wasn't sure-it did
    work in the speakers tho.

I use an iPod connector almost all the time and have never had a problem, even after market iPod connectors, but you'll get a different response depending on who you talk to. The guy at the Genius Bar told me yes, but phone support said no. Short answer...You should be able to use the iPod connector.
When you plug the iPhone into some 3rd party devices, you'll get a message stating "not compatible with iPhone" but that is because you are going to get interference because of the cell signal. You can put it into Airplane mode to avoid the interference or just deal with the interference and just click OK. That being said, I have read other posts where these devices do cause damage to the iPhone so proceed at your own risk.

  • Using the iPod with the camera connector

I was recently pleased to learn that it is possible to connect an iPod to my digital camera to transfer pictures to the iPod. I could use this feature when traveling to free up my camera's CompactFlash memory.
What I'm wondering is whether or not I can delete photos I have transfered to the iPod from the camera using the iPod's interface. The idea here would be to weed out the pictures not worth keeping to free up space on the iPod.

There is no way to delete files or folders from an iPod without connecting it to a computer and deleting the files from there.

  • IPod (dock connector) stuck in disk mode

i just replaced the HD on my iPod(dock connector)and now it stuck on disk mode. i tried to reset but it showed a folder with an exclaimation point and went back to disk mode flashing the "do not" symbol and "do not disconnect". it don't show up on my PC or my iTunes. HELP!

That's super odd. It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

  • Is there a way to hookup shuffle to standard iPod dock connector?

I just got a brand new shuffle, looks real sharp and easy to use, it's my first one since I sold my 1st gen iPod Touch years ago. At that time, I hooked up an adapter (using standard dock connector) to my car's stereo system, through the back of it (not through an option for the car's stereo). So I have a cable (standard iPod dock connector) in my car to hook up to an iPod; I had to control the songs from the iPod itself and usually just kept it on shuffle, and set the stereo to a certain mode for it to be played through the speakers. I wasn't aware until my shuffle came that the dock connector just uses the same 3.5mm jack as the headphones. Is there an adapter to use a standard dock connector for hooking the shuffle to the various iPod accessories (boom boxes/stereos) and therefore, my car's stereo?

Are you sure the three-way power switch is set to shuffle?  The middle position is play-in-order, so the shuffle plays the list in the same playlist order (or alphabetical order if using the All Songs list).
If the power switch is in the shuffle position, to re-shuffle the list, move it to the middle position and them move it back to the shuffle position.

  • Use the iPod as storage for pictures from a camera

Is it possible to use the iPod as a sorage disc for pictures from a camera. I currently use a 40 GByte Archos to store my photos while I´m travelling (there is a possibility to attach a card reader). Is this possible with an iPod as well?
    Thanks for any info
    Wolfgang

Depending on which iPod/camera you have, you could use a camera connector.

  • Adapter to use older iPod docking devices with iPod touch?

Turns out that old docking devices that provide power don't work with the iPod Touch. It displays an error message indicating that it can't charge, and you're left running on batteries. I heard that Apple stopped allowing power on the old Firewire pins. Is anyone aware of an adapter that fits between the Touch and the old docking connector to rectify this?
    Thanks,

  • IPod (dock connector) resuscitation.

I own an iPod (dock connector) that hasn't held a charge in years. Since I still have data on it, I'd like to know if there's a way to bring it back to life. Thanks for any help!

First of all, try another port on your computer. Some ports are not connected direct to the motherboard and do not recognize the iPod as well as those that are.
    Still no joy? See these.
iPod doesn't appear in iTunes or on the Mac desktop.
iPod does not appear in iPod Updater or iTunes in Mac OS X.
Try to restore it in disk mode.

  • IPOD dock connector touch wheel in New BMW with built in USB connection

HELP! I have a 2008 BMW 5 series that came with a built in USB Ipod connector.
I have an older IPOD dock connector touch wheel that plugs right in to the plug that BMW gave me but won't read on the display.I tried another plug and still, the Ipod is not working in the car. Do I have to download additional software? Is my Ipod model not compatible with the new BMW ipod system. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

Are you hoping to have the iPod serviced by Apple or a third party repair company?  If you want Apple to do the service, see this link.
