Using the knife vs. the pen tool to alter paths?

Is there a reason to use the Knife tool to cut up a shape VS. using the Pen tool to add or subtract additional paths?

The Knife tool cuts a single path into two separate paths.
The pen tool adds or removes anchor points to a single path.
There is no direct relation between the two. They both serve completely separate purposes.
Am I just doing your homework or something? These are all questions that could easily be answered by spending 10 Minutes with the application and trying the tools.

  • I have noticed while using pen tool that I have to wait before the small square appears.

    I have noticed while using pen tool that I have to wait before the small square appears. Tenth of a second, but this is disturbing on a daily basis. Is there any solution?

    It seems that in your version of InDesign, the image preview is grayed out while you are editing the picture frame with the pen tool. Not the case with my version of CS5 for macintosh.
    But I think this is a bad way to work. If you want the path only to affect text wrap, then edit the text wrap path. This is more versatile than editing the frame because you can have text appear over part of the image visible below text. This of a bird in flight in a light sky. The text wrap can surround the bird so text can appear in the sky. Your method does not permit this.
    If you are editing the frame’s path because you also want to crop the image, then you’d be better off doing that in Photoshop by adding either a clipping path in the Paths panel or a mask in the Layers panel. If it’s an Illustrator file then add a clipping mask.
    I find InDesign’s pen tool and general path editing to be significantly inferior to Illustrator’s. If I need to have an editable path in InDesign that I would draw much more easily in Illustrator, then I do that and copy the path back. It comes in as a simple unassigned frame, which I can then convert to a picture frame or a text frame and copy/paste the contents into the new frame. That may suit you if the above suggestions are inappropriate.

  • How can i change the color of pen tool in photoshop cs6?

    I want to change the color vector of pen tool in photoshop cs6?

    Just to make sure we're communicating properly...
    Is it that while creating a path you want the thin lines, handles, etc. to be a different color?
    Or is it that after you create your path you want to stroke it with a color?  It IS possible to stroke a path, and even to have an automatic Layer Stroke on a path that's any size/color shape you want.  Example:

  • The pen tool is NOT  doing good :-(

    I just update the Ai CC and now the pen tool 'close' all paths
    even without closing.
    What is going on?

    Daniel Ulysses,
    From the OP alone, I should have suggested your resetting the preferences  or something similar as the first thing to try, but it is rather strange to have it suddenly in two versions at the same time.
    The usual list of things to try is as follows.
    You may try the following (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps (the following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences):
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder http://www.bugge.com/Family-and-friends/Illy/illy.html (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);  Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

    b,
    As John says, you may have a look at Align to Pixel Grid. You may select everything and then untick Align to Pixel Grid in the Transform palette if needed, and also untick Align New Objects to Pixel Grid in the flyout options.
    You may avoid document types with that as default (RGB for web and the like) or change the default for such documents.
    But based on your mentioning on the far left may indivate something else.
    Especially if it is something happening in any document, you may try the list.
    The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);

  • How to add a 'stoke path' using 'pen tool' on CS6 (mac)?

    I'm a beginner at photoshop and I'm only 14 years old. I need to know this for my GCSE project.
    I'm trying to create something similar to this:
    Using pen tool and stroke path, but when i use the pen tool I'm not sure how to add the stroke path like that.
    I've used CS4 previously at school and when you right clicked on the path it came up with this:
    I haven't a clue how to get that up on CS6 (on mac) and when you right click it, it just seems to continue adding the path. Any help?

    In addition to conroys advice here is a video tutorial that might help you as well:

    Larry,
    I Just tried the solution you gave. It did not work. I still have 1 point vectors in a very small image. The image is a simple drawing of a map. I just want to size it to fit a smaller page size.

  • CS6 Bug Report: Pen tool points offset from cursor

    Hello,
    I want to report the current behavior change of the pen tool. In current and older versions, clicking with the pen tool on the canvas, created a point that was exactly centered with the cursor's center point, as expected.
    Now, in Photoshop CS6, clicking on the canvas with the pen tool results in path points created not in the same spot where one clicks, but offset a couple pixels.
    For people who, like me, use the pen tool a lot and do it fast, this change translates into lower precision when creating paths as, when the new points are created, if they are offset, the whole last leg of the path changes position.
    Can we expect that to be corrected for the final version?
    Thanks

    Im trying the BETA on a Mac Pro running Lion. I doubt this is a driver related problem since it is easily reproducible on various systems, both OSX and Windows.
    CS5: Zoom in really close until you can see the pixel grid. Grab the pen tool and create a path anchor anywhere. Wherever you click, a pont will appear.
    CS6: Do the same, click. This time, the path's point will appear in the closest corner of a pixel, as if new paths anchors where snapping to the pixel grid.
    See how anchor points snap to the pixel grid? That doesn't happen in CS5.
    Hope this comment helps.

  • Pen Tools in Illustrator has changed

    A program should make it easier to work with after every upgrade. In Illustrator it is every time when we buy an upgrade that it is getting more difficult to work with the program. This time they changed the pen tool. In CS2 we could use a short cut to change the pen tools to add anchor point or to switch between the different pen tools, staying in the standard pen tool. Now every time we have to go back to the menu to change the tool. It adds only an incredible amount of time to work with the program. Why did they change this?

    Larry he did not have the keyboard shortcuts that check box does not effect the command keys, the option key or the - or = key. I read what he wrote very carefully you and James did not read it carefully.
    If he wrote that when he hoover the pen tool over a path or anchor he did not get the plus or minus anchor point tool I would have responded as you and James suggested.
    It was my first thought as well but that was not what Paul wrote. Is that OK?
    Paul
    In the preferences under general there is a option to shut off auto add or minus anchor points it is labeled as Disable Auto Add/Delete. It will not give you the pen tool with the - or + sign if you hoover over a path or anchor point but does not effect the keyboard shortcuts.
    Don't worry about this they are just trying to show me up because they have a thing with life.

  • Pen tool, Rounded ractangle and Brush cursor.

    Hi, Good Day.
    There are things that I want to say about using CS4.
    1.   Pen tool.
    In Photoshop 5.0, I found that it is faster to <stroke path> compared to the newer version of PS. In PS 5.0, I never need to exit pen tool mode whenever I wanted to select the brush sizes. The Brush size Selection 'tray' tab is always available even when I’ve exit the brush mode. Thus make the stroke works become faster, simpler and easier.
    And this is not happen in CS4. What I see is when every time I want to stroke the paths, to choose the brush size I must exit the pen tool mode ; and when I’m back the pen tool mode again, the brush option tray will gone. This slows me every time when I want to choose brush or when I want to re-correct or to re-stroke in order for looking the right brush size and style; it's really complicates me.
    So, can Adobe do something about the Brush Selection tab so it always availed like other tabs, like PS5.0 do? Which like swatches tab, color tab, etc.. So it wouldn’t go off next time when we exit the brush mode; thus saves time.
    2.   Rounded rectangle.
    Problem: I want to modify my rounded rectangle shape by adjusting the all the four rounded edges evenly without ruining the square shape. The problem is the shape is too free, the points are working individually and paths are “flabby”.
    Can someone tell me know how to lock the shape?
    It’s like what in Microsoft Word do. The rounded rectangle lines can be locked so I can adjust the edges to be rounder and rounder, whether partly or simultaneously.
    3.     Brush cursor.
    I found that the brush cursor seem to be ‘unstable’; which is that the PS will change the Normal brush cursor to the Precise brush cursor when I’m using the Text tool, and I can’t change the cursor back to Normal cursor again after exiting the text tool and I'm also not on the text layer. And sometimes this problem happens even when I’m not using the Text tool; for example when I’m doing some copy and paste job.
    The only solution is to close PS and restart my computer. What I should do?
    Thanks for your concern.

    Hi Bion_s,
    In the course of playing around in Illustrator to find a solution, I found that if you open your appearance panel (Window > Appearance), select the fly-out menu and deselect New Art has Basic Appearance.
    I found that with this option unselected, you can select your stroke width and profile and draw multiple times without it reverting to the default stroke!
    Please let me know if this works for you. I'm not sure how this might affect your workflow on other projects, but it did result in the behavior you seemed to want.
    Cheers,
    Michael

  • Pen Tool clipping paths to light/ low contrast.

    Mac (10.6.8)
    When using the pen tool to make clipping paths (silhouetting) the lines are much to light, thin and low contrast to be properly seen. I spend a lot of time clipping products (often middle greyish colored ones) and find in some places it is virtually impossible to even see the line/path being created.
    I downloaded the CS6 beta with hopes that this problem was resolved but am unable to see where/how to fix it. (fixed outright? adjustments to line weight? Ability to change path color? Etc) Anyone else get it working properly?
    FYI It worked fine up until CS3 but with CS4, CS5 and CS5.5 Adobe seems to have gone backwards.  When researching a work around I have often seen it blamed on the MAC OS but that is untrue as I have both CS3 and CS5.5 installed on the same machine and the pen tool for clipping paths still works great in CS3.

    We do lots of paths as well, this helps somewhat:

  • Mask button grayed out when Pen tool's selected?

    Hello...
    I am going through a tutorial about how to use the Pen tool.
    The tut shows that I should be able to click the Mask button in order to create a trans BG. However, mine is grayed out. I cannot find a reason why that would be. I am able to use the Layer Mask under other circumstances.
    (The tut has me take an image, draw around the image to practice pulling/dragging, twisting, adding handles etc & so forth).
    I have the pen tool set to Path but the Mask doesn't become available under any of the options.
    The tut says to click Ctrl + Click on the path and then to click the Mask button.
    Any ideas why the Mask is grayed out?
    As always ~ I really appreciate your help.
    Hope you're having a great night/day

    Hello:
    I would Love to post a screenshot however my computer is "shot" all my F keys & up to the Delete are non functional. I'm going to get a new laptop asa I find out what would be best to run Adobe Master Suite.
    I have Photoshop CS6 Extended.
    Any way, yes, {blushing} the BG was selected. TY.
    I am suppose to make a selection of the path.
    I'm now completely embarrassed. Of course a trans bg can't be made when it's the bg I'm working on.
    The tutors' Layer panel shows only Layer 1 and no bg. He said to download the image he uses from Diviantart but the image would only open in a browser. So, I right clicked and saved the image. Then I opened the image which, of course, just opens on the bg layer.
    So, am I suppose to create a New file > New Layer and then open the image?
    Sorry if my questions seem obvious to you but I am just learning and still very much a newbie.
    THANK YOU!!!

  • Usage of pen tool in in Premiere pro

    There is a pen tool in Premiere Pro CS3, but I could not find any usage of this pen tool in premiere Pro. I went through the help contents, still I could not find any documentation about the usage of the pen tool.
    Anyone please explain me the usage of the pen tool in Premiere Pro.

    Hi. Also, there is a pen tool that can be used to draw shapes..
    This is from help file of Premiere Pro CS3...
    Create shapes
    You can use the drawing tools in the Titler to create a variety of shapes, such as rectangles, ellipses, and lines. The Titler includes standard pen tools that resemble those used in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop.

  • Diagonal Jagged Pixelation With Pen Tool and Sheared Typefont

    Hey guys, so I'm in the midst of making a type based logo right now and I sheared it to give it a bit of a diagonal edge. However, the diagonal lines are now noticeably pixelated and jagged. What I did was type out the name in the logo, then created outlines for it, then sheared it. I went over some of the lines with a pen tool stroke but it is still coming out the same. Here is my logos. The vertical diagonal lines in the E, K, R and I's are especially noticeable.
    This is my own personal music producer logo and I am pretty green with illustrator. So how do I make it as clean as this http://www.iamgrimsby.com/19614/1986395/logos/makj or some of these http://www.ruudvaneijk.com/logos
    Any Help would greatly be appreciated! Thank you guys so much!

    Hey Thanks for your help guys! So I gave downsampling a shot but it still ends up looking pixelated. The diagonal line on the E especially. I originally sheared this font to make it look italicized, but the shearing is creating this issue.
    Is it maybe just an issue of not using the shear function? When people use diagonal font do they typically just use the italiczed version of the font and not shear to achieve that look? If there is no italicized version of the font, am I just out of luck ?
    When compared side by side with pro logos such as here: http://www.ruudvaneijk.com/logos and http://www.iamgrimsby.com/19614/171236/logos/alesso, the logos are just much cleaner and professional looking. How do I achieve this super clean professional look? Am I just not working with the correct size or DPI?
    Here is another sample of my logo. Please help me guys. Thank you so much!
