Using the Lasso

hay all! I have a question. I want to change the background
of an image to transparent but leave the person the way it is, then
create a new layer with the same image with the transparent
background and have a drop shadow on the person. My question is,
how can I use the lasso to trace a line around the person. I have
about 15 pics that I have to do the same way? thanks

Edgardo,
In my experience each image presents a different challenge.
So depending
on what I am going to cut out I will use different
techniques. I don't
think there is a quick and dirty way to do what you want.
If there are large areas of color the Magic Wand will quicken
the
process. The Polygon Lasso tool will help you add and remove
selection
sections.
Using Select > Convert Marquee to Path will become your
best friend for
this task. Paths can be changed with ease to fit the figures
better.
But there will be some work involved.
Stephane has a great tutorial at:

  • Using the Lasso Tool crashing Photoshop CC

    Hi,
Looking for some help as to why Photoshop crashes at least once a day, sometimes more when using the basic Lasso Tool.
I'm using Photoshop CC, and it's completely up to date. I'm on Windows 8.1.  I'm a freelance illustrator and use the lasso tool when doing all of my artwork.  It crashes on any image I'm working, smaller stuff to larger files, from small amount of layers to over 200.  I'll use the lasso, typically holding alt to use the polygonal option and I'll notice when clicking to close my shape, photoshop will completely stop working.  I'll have to open the task manager and completely end the program.  Crashes across the board from CMYK to RGB, in 8 bits.
Looking for some help / ideas.  Please let me know if you need any other info, thanks.
    Kevin

    Hi Chris,
I've updated the system driver on the wacom, which was released in March.  I also tried the mouse and also seems to be up to date.  Here's a shot of the task manager when freezes.  Does that help at all?
I've just had a freeze 2 minutes ago.  I've been waiting for it to happen, hoping the wacom driver might change.  Apparently not.

  • When I use the lasso background turns on the grid

    Hi
I am using Photoshop CS5 on MAC. When I use the lasso tool and after closing the selection, background turns automatically on the grid background (white and grey squares) . I cant change it back to grey solid background. Please help in solving this problem.
    WJ

I dont want to change that in preferences because the grid background is very useful when I cut out with lasso tool from a photo. I just want to turn off the grid around my photo (red outline)
    Thank you

I don’t quite follow your description but if it’s just about the display of transparent areas that can be changed in the Preferences.

  • Using the Lasso to deselect objects?

In CS5, I tried to use the lasso tool while holding down the alt command to deselect selected items and it does not seem to work? It works to add objects to a selection when I hold down shift though. Does it not work this way?
    Thanks.

    Perdon, perdon por favor!
There most certainly is a way to have the lasso deselect points. With the lasso active, hold option (alt in Windows, I assume), then encircle the point(s) you wish to deselect. You said you were also holding the command key? Don't.

  • When using the lasso tools, how do i disengage from it, in order to adjust it?

When i am in the process of creating a selection, with the lasso tools, I would like to disengage from the tool, briefly to adjust my selection and then to return and continue to make the selection.  If i press the space bar, it does disengage; but the hand tool becomes active at the same time. If i click on the options with the tool, to either add or subtract from the selection, as i drag the mouse to do this, i cause the tool to continue to outline, when i would like it to stop. It seems to remind me of when i used to use an old etcher sketcher magnetic drawing toy, from the late 1970's. ( if you are old enough to know what i mean that is)! Does anyone have a solution to this problem.

The magnetic lasso tool is very useful and is suited admirably for selecting tiles or shingles. It is important to set up the tool for the task at hand. In the tool's option bar I start out with Feather=1px, check anti alias, Width=2px, Contrast=3%.
If things don't go well, the first  change that I make is to the contrast setting and give it another try. One can back-track by hitting delete on the keyboard, left click to lay down one or more anchor points, then go on to circumnavigate the area to be selected.
Now, after having made a complex selection, going to Layer>new>layer via copy puts the selection on its own layer, with surrounding transparency (checker-board pattern). One can use the eraser tool to tidy up, if required.
I offer this as my workflow. Not infrequently there are several ways to do things in this program.

  • Using the lasso in spectral editing.

In previous versions I could take the lasso selections and move them past the lower and upper limits of the spectral view -- I could also get the lasso to select everything that fell within it's marque (for example if I want to cut a whole word and move/paste it elsewhere) but in CS 5.5 no matter what I do I can't get the lasso to grab the really low frequencies.
Is there something obvious that I'm missing?

There are many times where words overlap and the only way I can separate them is visually using the spectral edit view (I like the linear display mode best, I have a hard time "reading" the logarithmic modes) -- often times I'll start to say a word and realize I pronounced it wrong or meant to say something else and I can correct myself easily in the flow of speaking while recording... having the ability to surgically cut out and replace the bad word (or stuttering) is a vital part of my audio editing workflow.
It looks like the issue is an "Anti-aliased" and/or "Softened" selection mode on by default with the lasso -- I remember the older version having similar issues early on but I can't remember how I got it work the way I wanted, but I do know that if I made my selection past the bottom edge of the spectral display it would cut all the way down to the lowest frequencies cleanly.
The main reason I can work with Audition so well is the spectral display -- it allows me the ability to work with my wacom tablet and eyes like I do in any graphics application -- and I am much more skilled in that arena than with my ears/waveform view (although for really tough clicks and pops that is often the best solution)
BTW the other thing that is driving me a bit batty is moving the timeline to the top instead of the bottom -- panning/scrolling by just grabbing the timeline was much easier and more intuitive with it at the bottom (as it was previously).
I'm not sure how the phrase those things for a request submission though...

  • Audition 3 crashes when I use the lasso tool in SPECTRAL view.

Hello I'm  fairly new to Audition 3, when I use Spectral view and lasso a frequency to remove Audition crashes.
Windows 7 X64bit 3.6 quad core duo, 12gb ram, ssd for system, Gigabyte MBO GA-X58A-UD3R, on board sound, Would a separate sound card cure the problem?
Any help would be very much appreciated, Breezley

Try updating graphics drivers, network drivers and sound drivers...
    If that doesn't work...
Some reasearch brought me to this...

It should be about the same in Windows 7... Just make sure you have an adequate virus scanner and that you use it.

  • Splitting a Flattened Image into Layers so I can use the Paint Bucket to change colors

I have what I think is a flattened image that is part of a Website template. (I'm assuming the image is flattened, because when I use the paint bucket to change the color, it colors the whole thing; and when I use the magic wand, the whole image is selected). I need to be able to use the paint bucket to change the colors. What do I have to do to make the image work that way? The image is made to look like you're looking left to right at four file folders. The folder labels are a different color. Is there some way to separate the folders (now in green), the folder labels (now in yellow), and the white background from each other, so I can apply the paint bucket to different layers later? I've worked on this for hours now, and can't seem to find the answer. I'll have to change the colors in the image at least 10 different times, so I was hoping I wouldn't have to resort to using the brush or pencil tools.

    Darlene,
Another way is to use the Replace Color Tool. The Hue/Saturation method is probably easier, but I thought I'd mention Replace Color for your information.
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=18IBCKnJchzoxfLEaw7Bu93j9W5jS
In my example I changed the 3rd label in your picture to red.
    1. Roughly select the label using the Lasso tools.
    2. Enchance>Adjust Color>Replace Color.
    3. Click on the label in the picture; it will appear in the box as white on black background. In general you would move the fuzziness slider until just the portion you wish to change appears white. In this case since the yellow is uniform with sharp border the fuzziness slider had minimal additional effect, but I did move it all the way right to capture the fringe pixels.
    4. Play with the 3 Transform sliders to get the desired result.
In this next example I changed the top of the lighthouse from red to green (why I would want to do that, I don't know!).
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1XhqCAvgc0zVWReJDkUB2OLDQChSy
Note that in this case I didn't have to move the fuzziness all the way right.

  • Using magnetic lasso...is there a way to change selection without re-lassoing?

When using the lasso to maybe select a person out of a photo, its generally not THAT accurate in certain spots.  when the lasso cuts into the photo area that you are trying to cut out, I find I have to start the process all over again.  Is there a way to go back a few points and try again?
Once i have completed the lasso and I see that points of it cut into the photo, is there a way to edit the selection edges?

So they're called "fastening points" and not "anchor points", i'm not going to remember that considering how often i use that tool

To erase recently drawn segments and fastening points,
press the Delete key until you’ve erased the fastening points for

(works with Backspace too, not only with Delete)

  • Using the clone tool on a picture I have pasted in another background?

I have photoshop elements 9, and took a photo that I wanted to change the background on. I erased all the picture except for my husband and I, then used the lasso tool to outline our photo and I copied it, and pasted it on another picture with a better backround. Now I am unable to use the clone tool on my husband and I, but can on the background. Maybe there is a better way to extract a photo and post it to a new background. But everytime I try to see how to do it on google, I see all these other tools that people use that I don't have. I have only elements 9, so am limited. Any suggestions?

I'm not at all sure I understand how elements 9 is limited in terms of the clone stamp compared to whatever you're googling, but I think your problem is most likely that you are either not targeting a portion of a layer with something in it (trying to clone from the empty area of the layer surrounding the pasted in image of you and your husband, for example) or trying to clone from a layer that isn't active (trying to clone from the background layer when the pasted in layer is the active layer).
You might want to turn on the Sample all Layers checkbox and see if that helps any.

  • When I use the outine tool to cut out a portion of a picture it locks up, is this a program problem

Working in photo shop 10, when I use the outline tool as I am outlining the picture to cut and paste
the screen drops down about one inch and locks up. Is this a Photo shop problem or a HP computer problem?

Sorry, but I don't know what the outline tool is. Are you using the lasso tool? There is a bug in the lasso tool in PSE 10 windows, explained here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1013423?tstart=0
See post 7. I would just use another tool--try the quick selection tool, for instance.

  • Using the magic lasso

    Hello all,
I'm setting up a new website on which I will be showing different pictures of dining tables. I'm setting up several sites, the first one is finished already: Steigerhout Furniture but I'm still working on the other 2 Robuuste tafels and Riverwood Living
I'd like some help and tips on how to use the magic lasso to get a clean cut this table below. Maybe someone can show off their photoshop skills so I can get a good idea of whats possible.
    thanks in advance.

As Barbara pointed out, the lack of contrast between foreground and background precludes the use of the selection tools to good advantage.
I suggest that you photograph the furniture in other surroundings.
    Here is what I did:
Duplicated background layer, worked on background copy layer, and shut off visibility of background layer
Accessed the eraser tool, went to the square brush library, selected a hard, small brush.
The straight lines of the table allowed me to erase the background immediately surrounding the table. Click a start point, hold down the shift key, and click at an end point, and the tool erases in a straight line.
I circumnavigated  the table this way, then with a larger brush erased the rest of the background
    Added new background
You can make a selection of the table with a mask as well. I can supply directions for thiis if you so desire.

  • How do I turn off the extra cursor on the lasso tool?

I'm hoping somebody here knows a way to revert the icon for the lasso tool to its old self... or at least turn it into a simple cursor.
The lasso tool in this new Photoshop version suddenly forces you to see a double image: both the original lasso and a cursor above it that points to the actual connection point.
This setup is annoying as hell and no - I haven't gotten used to it.
The tool ends up so large that it's obscuring part of what I want to select... not to mention that my instinct wants to see the connection point on the tip of the lasso.
What was great abou the original lasso was the fact that the icon itself was so thin that it didn't obscure what I was trying to select.
Not just do I suddenly have an icon that's twice as large, the arrow is also thick and opaque - it's very much in my way and totally counter productive!
I can understand wanting to make things more unified... but this is not the way to do it.
At least give us the option to have the lasso show up as either an arrow or the old tool. You're allowing us to show the pen tips as cursors... why not include that choice for the lasso tool too?
A simple dropdown on the top when I select the tool would do the trick just fine. I might actually like having the lasso tool as a thin arrow instead of a lasso shape.
    However -
As it is now, it's a bad design and makes for a clunky tool that has two origin tips AND obscures my selection area.

I tend to select things from left to right and every time I am moving in a downward right diagonal motion during lasso selection I am missing a clear view and I am tending to have a more sloppy selection.  All this does is slow me down since I need to go back and hit those areas again.  The big arrowhead just get's in the way.  The original lasso tool with the thin line and small active point at it's lower left was far better for me.
I don't like turning the cursors to precise because I like to see the active tool icon where my cursor is and as the icon changes as I hold modifier keys down.  If I am forced to get comfortable with using pricise cursors I guess I will, but man, I've never had to do this in my 15 years of photoshop use...
I would absolutely LOVE to find a way to get the old lasso icon -- without the arrowhead above it.
Is there any chance this option could be inlcuded in cursor preferences?  I'd give much thanks, Adobe.
