Using The Mac Book (Pro) With Music

I am thinking of purchasing a Mac book or a Mac Book pro very soon - either one will have an Intel Core 2 duo. However, I am very curious to find out if anyone has tried to use Logic and maybe other music software with one of these units (with core 2 duo) - and if so, can they tell us how far you can push it - in terms of CPU - plug-in's and audio Instruments etc. - and how it compares to powerful desktop units?

I have both a G5 tower and a Macbook pro. I use the tower primarily for recording and the pro for live gig situations, I'm considering moving all my recording over to the Pro and use the node function to utlize the desktop.
The pro is defintiely faster, I have yet to have any problems outside the fact that most of my plugins I use still won't run on the Intel pro. In terms of CPU I've seen demos running 99 audio tracks without much of a problem. The other consideration is disk size on the pro compared to a tower.
The main thing is compatability of plugins with the new Intel macs.
Hope this helps

What is the best external hard drive for the MAC Book Pro with Retina?
I was looking at WD MY PASSPORT FOR MAC and Toshiba. I want something that will work best with time capsule! Suggestions on the best external hard drive would be greatly appreciated!!!

A Time Machine backup drive should be substantially larger than the system drive.  If you have a 128 or 256 GB SSD then a 1 TB drive will suffice.  If you have a 512 GB SSD then a 2 TB drive will suffice.  As leroydouglas indicated any brand other than WD will do.
For 1 TB drives PlotinusVeritas gives some great suggestions here:

A 2 TB drive sold by Apple:

    $130
A 2 TB drive just as good for only $92.

No.  The storage is all SSD.
    Ciao.
If you are referring to an optical drive, that is also NOT included.  You would need to connect one externally.

  • Can I use my mac book pro with 120 volt and 240 volt power supplies?  Does the power converter automatically switch, so I just need a different adapter plug?

I got my mac book pro in the U.S., but I will be travelling to where there is 240 volt power.  Does the mag safe power adapter switch automatically, so I just need a converter plug, or do I need a transformer to convert from 240 to 120 volts?  Thanks.

    Hi,
I too bought my Macbook Pro in the US and I live in the UK (its so much cheaper in the US! No 20% VAT!)
The power adapter does work on UK 230v power. You can also get a three pin extension lead (like the 2 pin US one that came with the MBP) for about £3 with free delivery from Amazon UK.
Another tip, whne you are back in the UK, and you are switching from a PC to a Mac, get in touch with your local Apple Shop who run one to one free courses on how to use your MBP.
    Hope This Helps!!

  • Is normal in the mac book pro with the retina make fan noise al the time ?

Is normal that the new macbook pro with retina make fan noise all the time?

    Hi everyone.
I just bought an mac book pro retina , 15 inches , 2 GHz, Core i7, 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3. I'm a programmer , so, I really don't give to the mac book an exhaustive use, so the performance of the machine is good for me. But recently , I discovery some kind of issue : a noise fan when I reproduce a video from Internet, in full screen mode.
I download the iStatus Menus program for mac, to has a complete dashboard of the situation , and I got this :
    1) When recently start the mac book, the statistics are
All in order, the revolutions of the fan are OK, no fan noise at all.
But , just opened a video in full screen , a few seconds after opened start it, the machine increase the temperature from (normal) 40° to 98° (so high), and the statistics change dramatically , as follow :
As you can see, the fan revolution increase 3x , from  2000 to 6000 . The use of Google Helper increase over 200% . And obviously the noise fan make me crazy,
I've only seen this "issue" on that scenario, ( internet video full screen reproduction ). That's not happen , even when many applications are open.
Should I worry about this ?,  or, this is a normal behaviour on the machine ?.
I'll appreciate any advice or answer.
    Kindly regards.

  • I am using a mac book pro with Leopard OS. when I switch my laptop on it flashes a grey folder with a question mark on a grey screen, after the chime. I have tried all the things mentioned in another discussion. none of those have helped. HELP! im scared.

what must i do? im a student and dont have backup for my work. Im in desperate need of a solution where i wont lose my work from my desktop.

You need to purchase Leopard if you don't have the DVD and reinstall OS X:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Mac Book Pro with a separate apple keyboard (wired) randomly the keyboard will make a thudding noise like a key is depressed and then freezes

Hi I'm using a Mac Book Pro with a separate apple keyboard (wired).  Randomly the keyboard will make a thudding noise like a key is depressed and stuck (which it isn't) which then stops when the keyboard is unplugged.  I've tried rebooting, plugging it into another port and unplugging  my mouse from it and it hasn't solved the issue.  I also can't pin point when it does it, it seems to be random so sometimes, like now it's fine and then others it does it every few minutes.  I'm reluctant to throw the keyboard out if there is a chance it can be fixed.  Any ideas?

You cannot use any additional devices on the keyboard's USB ports when used in this fashion (except perhaps ONE low power Apple mouse). Anything more draws too much power and may make the keyboard malfunction. In general, keyboards do not tend to complain about low power, they just stop working properly.

  • Using Mac Book Pro with TV

I would like to use the Mac Book Pro hooked up to my television to watch tv and movies. We have a Mac Mini in our office upstairs that we use to watch tv through Plex 9. Its a large library that would not fit on laptop, so how do I watch all of our shows from upstairs to laptop downstairs?

    eww wrote:
Copy the library from the Mini onto an external FireWire hard drive, bring the hard drive downstairs, and connect it to the MacBook Pro.
    That sounds rather practical.
But, I might have actually found a use for Time Capsule as a Base Station (http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/wireless.html).
Think you could put your large library on Time Capsule and then share with Mac Mini and Mac Book Pro. If you share media from several places, you’ll need to use the Plex Media Manager on each computer. What I don't understand about Plex is that they also say (http://wiki.plexapp.com/index.php/PlexNine_Configurationstest):
    Network Planning
If you’re installing several Plex systems, it’s important to get your network right. Generally, we recommend you install a wired gigabit network where possible. Streaming 1080p shows over a wireless network will probably result in jerky playback. If you see the ‘buffering’ overlay while watching shows, the network is not keeping up with the data demand. If you’re installing a wired network, use a good quality gigabit switch as they are quite affordable today as well as Cat-5e cabling.
If installing a wired network isn’t practical and you do want to stream HD video, investigate alternative networks such as HomePlug AV.
Ok, that makes sense, but they also offer Plex App For iOS Devices. See video / article "Exclusive Hands-On With Plex/Nine For Mac OS X & Plex App For iOS Devices" (http://www.crunchgear.com/2010/08/30/exclusive-hands-on-with-plex-nine-for-mac-o s-x-and-plex-app-for-ios-devices/). These are on wireless devices, so would one then assume "jerky playback". I really don't know, not something I toy around with, so just food for thought.
Also, according to yesterdays Back to the Mac event, The App Store will be added to Macs, as a download, within 90 days. It will also be featured as part of Apple's upcoming operating system update, Lion, which is expected in summer 2011 (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/products/2010-10-20-apple-macbook_N.htm).
Apple has added "Introducing the Mac App Store" (coming soon - nhttp://www.apple.com/mac/app-store/), which you can view for more info.
It seems like the Plex App For iOS Devices does pretty much of what you are asking for, but at this time, no way of knowing if that will be offered as an app for MBP via Mac App Store.
PS, if that Time Capsule as a Base Station works, supposedly you could also use MobileMe and access Time Capsule movie library over the Internet. It seems like it should work, given my own posts / questions about it, I really don't know.
If you try anything in this post that works, would like to hear about it. Thanks.

  • Sync mac book pro with intel imac

I have an dual core imac and just got a mac book pro intel 2 dual core. I run a wireless g home network and have one windows maching on the network. What i want to do is mirror the imac and mac book so that they are for the most part the same computer. I want to mirror all the itunes songs, iphoto pics, and some other documents and random stuff. I was wondering what was the best way to do this. Or should I just sell the imac and just use the mac book. I would like to do this wirelessly so i don't have to hook up a firewire everyday. Something like everynight while i sleep the two computers sync up so that i can grab the mac book as i walk out the door and have everything on it that i have on my imac. And vice versa, if is do something during the day on my mac book i want to be able to have that at home on my imac. Basically have one computer, at home use the imac and on the move use the mac book. Is this possible, how do most people do this sort of thing. Or would I be better off just selling the imac and using the mac book pro for everything. Please help, I am getting no where fast with apple support.
    thanks in advance
    roland

well, i don't know of a program that will do that on the fly for you.
what i would suggest is looking onto getting a .mac account.
also, you can just turn on sharing in iPhoto and iTunes (keeping all photos and music on one computer) and both machines will be able to access them. i have a g4 with an external drive that i keep all my music on - i turn on sharing and can listen to all the music on my macbook without it taking up the space on the hardrive.
