Using the MacBook Pro "closed"
I want to use my MBP C2D with an external monitor, keyboard, etc... is there some way to use it "closed" so that i use less desk space but it'll still operate correctly?
thanks!
I had this exact same question a few days ago and after a little searching came upon this article:

Using the MacBook Pro with external Monitor and Keyboard
This may be a dumb question, but here it goes anyway:
Can I use the MacBook Pro with an external monitor and a bluetooth keyboard and mouse without having it opened all of the time ?
I am planning to buy a MacBook for my wife and most of the time she will be using it at her home office.
I don't want her to use the computer opened all of the time when she is actually looking at the separate screen and using a separate keyboard. Having the laptop opened will only accumulate dust and reduce the lifetime of the built in screen.
What I would actually need is a kind of "docking station", but Apple doesn't make that - I know.
So can the MacBook at least be operated without the internal screen powered on while it is closed?
Thanks for your help

Using the macbook pro with lcd drain the battery?
hello guy i bought a macbook pro 13 last week and according to what they say is up to 7 hours and im only getting like 5 just using the web or chatting or doing very basic stuff, i also want to know if using the macbook pro connected to the lcd tv drain ur batter y too. thanx
I cannot quite undertsand all you just said. Some punctuation to break up into sentences will help.
But if you are trying to say "I hope I did not spend so much for a product no beter than a Windows PC", then I think you will eventually find your $$ were well spent.
As I said, my work-supplied 14 in Windows PC laptop gets at most 4.5 hours. I get 5-6 under average use with my 15 in MBP.
Hang tight, you will firgure it all out. -
Is there anyway to use the macbook pro as a moniter for a seperate device?
Is it possible under a program of some sort to use the macbook pro's screen as a seperate moniter for a device because I am always on the go and I bring my macbook everywhere so it would be extremely conveniant if I could use it's amazing screen as a moniter for: dvd player,xbox,ps3,etc.

Macbook Pro's have dvd players built in. Is yours broken? Yes, you can hook up an xbox 360 or a ps3. google provides several articles and video tutorials on how to accomplish this. -
Is is possible to use the MacBook pro as a handsfree for the iPhone?
Why we cannot control de iPhone using the MacBook pro?.
It should be very easy, but it is not.
I even can't pair my MacBook pro with my iPhone, see pic!
I really do not understand why we can not use the MacBook bluetooth capabilities to make calls, answers calls etc.
Apple let us use the Mac bluetooth capabilities to use and control our iPhone, it should be easy, also! You may think it should be easy, but in reality it is not. Your MacBook Pro is not a dedicated handsfree headset, and it would take a considerable amount of effort to write the application code to create a program for your MBP to emulate one. You can find any third party developer you like and convince them to create a Mac App for you which will provide you with a user interface on your Mac, and use Bluetooth to emulate a handsfree headset for your cell phone (it swouldn't even have to be an iPhone) and see just how much they want to charge you for such an application. You might be surprised to see how high those numbers really are...

What if ingesting from DV tape to FC X using the Macbook Pro Retina which lacks a firewire port
I have used it quite a bit for connecting to external drives, etc. with no problems. Have not done a tape ingest as we don't have tape based cameras to work with any more. It appears to emulate a FW800 port perfectly.

Is that I sold my macbook pro an the person who bought it needs it quickly so I have an external drive but it is not portable so I bought a portable external drive but it may take a while to arrive so I backed up my data with the external drive that I have in my house but I would like to know if I can restore my data to the new external drive without the macbook pro and just with the external drive of my house to the portable external drive.
Thank youNo, that's not possible. A computer is required in order to effect such a transfer. Connect both drives to your computer. You can use Disk Utility to clone one drive to the other. Be sure you first partition and format the new drive:
Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new external drive. Source means the old external drive. -
Using the Macbook Pro Internationally
So, I intend on moving to the Czech Republic, and have pretty much decided on buying the next version of the Macbook Pro (depending on how the prices are, anyway). I know that the laptop can take the voltages in Europe and that all I need is the plug adapter. My question is whether there is any kind of a special adapter, or if I can just use any kind that is for general use. Also, since I plan on staying there permanently, are there any issues with using the adapter for a prolonged time?
Also, the DVD region is different. But reading though some of the other topics, I could probably just use the VLC Player to play them.
I decided to buy one here because it would be about 800 bucks cheaper, but I do have look even more into whether I have to pay any import taxes. So if anyone happens to know anything in regards to this, but I doubt anyone will.
Thanks!Hi L,
Any adapter that fits.
Yes you can use it long term.
You can change the DVD region five times.
No idea about import taxes. -
Once I saw in Apple's website an adapter to fit the MacBook Pro's charger into a MacBook Air, because the entrance is very thin... Where can I find it?

How do I use the MacBook Pro's audio line in?
Hi,
I've been trying to connect my Playstation 3's analog audio output to my MacBook Pro but it doesn't seem to work. Everytime after I connect it, there still won't be any sound coming out of the speakers.
How is the analog line in supposed to work?
Thanks!Hi Ymer,
Have you selected "audio line in" as your sound source in System preferences / Sound?
The other thing you will need to do is get hold of a copy of an excellent little utility produced by the people who make "Audio Hijack", called "Line-In" - available from http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Audio/LineIn.shtml or direct from the maker at http://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies/
There is no need to use a sound recording app, if you use "Line In", though that is another option.
Cheers

I am using FaceTime to look in on a meeting being held on the other end, but I don't want the people on the other end to be able to see me. Is there a way to disable the camera while watching on FaceTime on my MacBook Pro?
First of all, if you want to run video inside a .pdf on an iPad, you should be aware that the Adobe Tablet and Mobile reader does NOT support rich media ( audio or video ). Despite trying to encourage Adobe to 'get real', it seems that they have no intention to do so in the short term. SO ... I have been working with a company called Readdle, and beta testing their 'PDF Expert' application, and it is probably the most sophisticated .pdf reader for iOS on the market.
It supports rich media, and certain levels of JavaScript that are particularly useful for this kind of work.
However, if all you want to do is insert video into a single .pdf document, that will run on iOS ( with 'PDF Expert only' ) as well as desktop Mac or PC, the video needs to be h264 .mp4 format ( basically avoid ANY based Flash content for iOS ).
You should also note, that active Buttons ( not hyperlinks, which are different ) which you might wish to create in say InDesign or even Acrobat, need to be made up of just imagery (and that also means converting your text to outlines ). However, this is only necessary for iOS with PDF Expert. Also be aware that I have not done much work which includes .pdf on Android.
I do think though that if you stick with basic navigation, avoid active 'Layers' authoring and only want to run simple video, the h264 .mp4 encoding is going to work across ALL platforms.
If you want to have a look 'under the hood' of an example, please DOWNLOAD and save this item

How can I use the MacBook Pro webcam with Windows XP apps under Parallel?
Thank you in advance for your help with this matter.
I have a MacBook Pro and I have just installed Parallel with Windows XP. I would like to use the webcam that comes with the laptop for applications that run under Windows XP (ex.: PalTalk).
The application doesn't seen to recognize the camera. Do I have to load the drivers for this camera in XP? If so where can I find them and what is the process?
Thank you again,
EnricoYou probably need to load the Boot Camp drivers that are on the Leopard DVD. Whether it works or not I can't say, but you may want to post your question on the Parallels forums, since it's not an Apple product, and if anyone has gotten it to work you'll find them over there.

Current Apple portable computer batteries are pre-calibrated and do not require the calibration procedure outlined in this article. These computers use batteries that should be replaced only by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
