Using the Macbook with new LED Apple Cinema Display? Not a beginner's Q...

Hi - I'm sort of cross-posting this because I'm not getting any answers in the Apple Cinema Display Forum, so here goes. So far, no one - not even a tech guy at a local Apple Reseller - has been able to help, so I've got my fingers crossed.
I just got a 24" Apple LED Cinema Display and am using it with my 13" Aluminum Unibody Macbook. What I do is dock the Macbook (with closed screen) when at home with the big display and just use that. I enlarge program windows and arrange the layout (in different spaces) to take advantage of the large screen and resolution. So far so good.
But I'm a student and take my macbook with me to class. When I open it up, all the program windows are set as they were on the larger screen, which means some are out of view or simply not well-adjusted for the smaller and lower resolution of the Macbook. I manually adjust these and work on the Macbook that way.
But when I return home in the evening, I have to adjust them again once I 'dock' the Macbook. Kind of a pain if I'm doing this twice a day.
What I'd like to know is: is there a setting or group of settings that would do this automatically for me? A program? An AppleScript? Surely someone out there has had the same issues and has found a fix, if such a thing exists. Or is it just a fact of nature one deals with when working on two screens?
To preclude one response: yes, I know I can mirror the displays when I open the Macbook along with the LED Cinema Display. But this simply mirrors them using the lower resolution and dimensions of the Macbook screen. And that kind of negates having the larger, Cinema Display.
So - any thoughts? Solutions? How do you guys manage with this?
Thanks,
Jeff

I don't really have a solution for you but wanted to link you to a discussion on this very topic that took place last month on MacInTouch.
http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/helpplease/topic3939.html#d24sep2009
The conclusion seemed to be that it is not an OS issue, it's an application issue. There really was no good answer but some good insight into why the problem exists and why it may not be something Apple can fix.

  • Second Monitor with 2008 LED Apple Cinema Display?

Hi there I have an Eary 2011 15" MacBook Pro, with Thunderbolt.
Last night I purchased an immaculate 2008 LED Apple Cinema Display.  It was just far too good a deal to turn down.  The resolution is 1920 x 1200.
Prior to this I had (and still do have) a Dell Ultrasharp U2410 PremierColor, with attached sounbar.
I now have the Apple display set up and running and it is awesome looking (same resolution as my Dell, but with the backlit LED, it just looks pristine).
Is there a way I can set up the Mac so that both monitors are running, I know I can't daisy chain, and this Apple monitor is Mini Display port as opposed to Thunderbolt.
The Dell has two DVI ports, a VGA, a HDMI, a DisplayPort, and a set of Component and Composite connectors.
Which of these would be best to use and is it even possible?
    Thanks in advance.
    Tommy

Connect the Apple display to the Thunderbolt port and the Dell with a USB-to-DVI adapter like this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/VIDU2DVIA/
Note that because USB is slow, the Dell monitor will be less responsive than the ACD.

You can use USB for the Apple trackpad.

  • (2) 27" LED Apple Cinema displays + Sapphire 6950?

  • 20" Apple Cinema Display not recognised after upgrading to OS 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion)

20" Apple Cinema Display not recognised after upgrading to OS 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion).
Hello Apple! Anybody there? How long does your community have to wait for a solution?
The same problem has been unsolved for months now. No statements from Apple either.
I was told today to wait for 10.8.3. This might solve the issue. I can not belive my ears.
My MacBookPro 4,1, Intel Core 2 Duo with 2.5 GHz Processor and Graphics chip: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT, will not talk to the exter. 20" Cinema Display ( Model Number A1081 ). The screen stays black. Resetting the PRAM did not help. I removed the 'com.apple.windowserver.plist' and the 'com.apple.windowserver.OE35739etc,etcxxxxxxxxxxx.plist', but that did not help either.
Any other solutions, or do I have to downgrade or give up on Apple Computers alltogether after using them for over 25 years?

I found out that I needed a $100 mini displayport to dual-link dvi adapter to make my $30" cinema display work with my macbook pro
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter?fnode=51
When I found out that solved the problem, I took it back because that was too expensive for a stupid adapter, and it still didn't work perfectly.

  • 2005 Apple Cinema displays not able to show movies with new iTunes

ITunes is giving me the following error when trying to watch movies on my 2005 Apple Cinema display(s).
The selected movie won’t play on one of your connected displays.
This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection).
Try moving the iTunes window to a different display. Make sure the entire window is on the supported display.
I called the Apple support, they said my displays can not support HDCP. Can anyone else comment on this?
Is this true to the best of your knowledge?
Is there anything I can do to make my movies play again? Other than buy new monitors of course.
    Thanks...

    Hi,
Highlight one of the applications that cannot be updated and click File> Get Info. Make sure you are signing-in to the iTunes Store with that Account Name shown in the Get Info window.
Then sign-in to the iTunes store and verify the account information as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1918
If the issue persists, try to reconfigure the security software or remove the SC Info folder as others have in this related discussion: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1939036

  • Apple Cinema Display not working in Win XP

I successfully installed Win XP Pro SP2 in Boot Camp. Everything (mouse, keyboard, printer, etc) works except my Apple Cinema Display. When I switch back to the Mac OS X the display works fine. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

  • My daughter is using the MacBook with an Azerty clavier, but as she studies in Vienna, she demands to find a querty to put over the original.Exists one? In the App-store in Vienna we could not find it.

My daughter  is studying in Vienna, as she works in German she needs a querty keybord, the French one is "azrty"
Exists a possibility for her -like the querty to stick over the Azerty ?
    And a second question :
I'm using a Mac -"bureau"  snowleopard too.
I'ld like to transfer the music of my old vinyl  classical musics to CD , using the Mac.
Is it possible? ? what equipment do I need ?

    And a second question
You're asking two very different questions in the same thread. That's not good for you, because some people who know about digitising LPs may not be interested in questions about keyboards. Make a new topic for your second question.
My daughter  is studying in Vienna, as she works in German she needs a querty keybord
The standard keyboard in Austria and Germany is QWERTZ not QWERTY. (Some people do use QWERTY, though.) So you need to make sure which one she needs. Check Wikipedia for the difference between QWERTY and QWERTZ. (If she types in German, then QWERTZ is a better choice.)
    <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QWERTZ>
Once you are sure which she needs, then just Google it (for QWERTZ try "keyboard mac german overlays"), or check <amazon.com>.

  • Mac Pro and dual 24" LED Apple Cinema Displays

I really want to upgrade my current 22" cinema display to the 24" LED, but as far as know there is no way currently to do so.
Does anyone know how to make it happen? Is there an adapter or do I need a new video card? It has to be possible right?

    Hi,
the Mini-DisplayPort Apple uses on the MacBook, MacBook Pros and the 24" ACD is a minituarized version of the 'full' DisplayPort and is also a proprietary version currently not used by other manufacturers.
    See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppleCinemaDisplay
Might be only a matter of time for such an adapter to come out.
(At least I hope so myself, since the ACD looks really good )

  • HT204053 I had to create an Apple ID to open a cloud account. For some time prior to this, I had an account for my iPod. Today I was unable to update apps using the old password. My Apple ID will not do it either. ???

I had to create an Apple ID to open a cloud account some time ago. For some time prior to this, I had an account for my iPod. Today I did a sync and was notified of two app updates, but was unable to use my old password and was notified to use my Apple ID. However, when I log in with my Apple ID, the store tells me that I do not own the apps.
How can I get this system to update my iPod apps.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Certainly not happy with this situation, as Apple expects me to pay for help on this.

    1. Don't confuse "Apple ID" with iTunes Account ID.  You can have many Apple IDs but only one iTunes account active at a time.
    2. If you "changed" your iTunes account ID, you actually have 2 accounts - one under the old name plus the new name.
    3. You can't merge the accounts - they remain separate.  Apps purcahsed under the old account name will update ONLY WHEN THE PHONE IS SIGNED IN TO THE OLD ACCOUNT NAME  and visa versa.
    4. Likewise, you can sync only the apps, music, media purchased under the account the phone AND iTunes are signed in to.

  • Using the MacPro with the LED cinema display

When using the MacPro with a LED cinema display (or any other external monitor in fact), is it possible to make it so that the main display (the screen showing the dock and menu at the top) is assigned to the external monitor?

    Hello.
Yes, you should be able to do this through +System Preferences>Displays+.
Just click and drag the menu/dock (from within System Preferences) to the display you require.

  • How Can I Test New Apple Cinema Display?

My new 30" Apple Cinema Display arrived today but the arrival of my MacBook Pro is still 4 weeks out (I ordered both at the same time for dual warranty purposes). I cannot hook this ACD to my wife's 12" PB and the only other computer that may have the ability is my daughter's new iMac Intel Core Duo (but I'm not sure if it will power the 30" ACD). I would like to test for stuck or dead pixels. Can I plug the AC cord into an outlet and no video connection then power on or will this show no pixel anomolies, or worse, cause potential harm to my display? Anyone? Thanks to all that may reply.
PS: I threatened to cancel my order unless the Supervisor allowed me time to evaluate the new monitor the full 2 weeks AFTER the arrival of my MacBook Pro, so I have plenty of time, just no computer to run the darn thing!
PowerBook G4 12" aluminum & iMac Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Apple 30" Cinema Display w/ iLift LCD monitor arm

I think pretty much any Mac with DVI will drive the 30" ACD, just not at the native resolution. You will get 1280x800. But if you are just looking at a solid full screen of a single color, for the purpose of trying to spot dead/stuck pixles, the low res shouldn't make any difference at all for such purposes.

  • 23" Apple Cinema Display & 15" MacBook Pro?

    1) Any ideas on how to crank up the res on a MacBook Pro for external mirroring?
A manager at my company ordered a 15" MacBook Pro & a 23" Apple Cinema Display for the purpose of Mirroring.
When spanning, the laptop and the display look great (and both run in their native modes of 1920 x 1200 and 1440 by 900, respectively), but when mirroring is enabled, the MacBook video card acts like it can't power the 23" LCD properly. It wants to default both the 15" built-in display and the Cinema display at 1440 by 900 - which is unacceptable.
    2) Is it possible to close a MacBook Pro's lid and continue to power the external monitor without the MacBook sleeping?
    3) Is it possible to toggle the MacBook Pro's video signal to turn OFF the built-in laptop display and ONLY run on the external display? I remember older PowerBooks being able to do this. Many PC laptops will allow you to disable the local video and only send a signal to the external display (for presentations etc).

    1) Any ideas on how to crank up the res on a MacBook Pro for external mirroring?
Mirroring is pixel to pixel. The MacBook only has 1440 by 900, so that's all it can show on the external display when mirroring.
    2) Is it possible to close a MacBook Pro's lid and continue to power the external monitor without the MacBook sleeping?
Attach the power adapter and an external keyboard and mouse (bluetooth is OK if it's set to wake the computer). When you close the lid, the computer will sleep, but will wake (and continue to run with the lid closed) when you use the external mouse or keyboard.
    3) Is it possible to toggle the MacBook Pro's video signal to turn OFF the built-in laptop display and ONLY run on the external display?
Not with the lid open, but if not mirrored, you can move the menu bar to the external display by following the instructions in the "Arrangement" tab of "Displays" system preference.
