Using the Nikon RAW NEF format and Nikon Capture NX.

This is about using the RAW NEF format in Aperture together with RAW NEF capable editing programs, specifically Nikon Capture NX.
I basically agree with Aperture that it is a "workflow tool" and NOT a photo editor with all the bells and whistles of Photoshop or Nikon Capture. Apple fixed the most basic level of NEF conversion with version 1.1, great!
However, as a workflow tool for RAW images, I cannot seem to figure out how to use RAW (Nikon's NEF) files efficiently with the new Nikon Capture NX.
Nikon Capture NX is quite an interesting alternative to Photoshop. (I cannot wait or the Universal version, as with Photoshop, but that is another matter.) I like the work flow idea it uses, and I like that it edits the RAW NEF files directly, layering the edits on the RAW data. If I open an edited NEF file in Photoshop using the Nikon Plug-in, the result looks great. If I open the same file with Aperture (or using the Adobe RAW plugin) the result is basically an unedited version of the RAW NEF file. This is very disappointing.
It seems I need to export the file from Nikon Capture as a TIFF or JPG. The TIFF gives good results but takes up about 10x more disc space. With the JPG I must give up the 16-bit per channel color depth. Neither allow me to have a "RAW workflow" as advertised by Aperture.
What am I missing? Is this something Apple is going to work on by working more closely with Nikon (and Cannon)? (I figure Nikon keeps their conversion algorithms secret.)
Or are we out of luck here?

How do I know? Well if you change the white balance settings in-camera, different numbers come thru in Aperture. But the numbers in Aperture, ACR and the presumed numbers in-camera do not match. I wrote Nikon about this quite a while ago and they wrote back saying we do not know how other people interprete our proprietary WB numbers. See note below for additional insight as how you might look further into it
"The shooting data I referenced is available in Nikon View Browser when viewing your images. Looking at all the images at once, it is easy to compare changes made to the camera by quickly clicking on the separate thumbnails. They displayed the differences I had mentioned before. If you do not already have the software, you can download it here:

Nikon Capture will not report a temperature value for White Balance, unless a manual Kelvin setting is selected using the option in the D200. As I mentioned before, Auto White Balance, and other Auto settings in the camera may not deliver a consistent result in a burst or as separate still frames even if the subject has not moved or changed. You have a cast on that one image using Auto White Balance. This is not uncommon, just choose a different value. The value may not even accurately reflect what situation you are in. It may be sunny, and you choose cloudy. The White Balance is not measuring the ambient light, it's used to measure the temperature of the light reflecting off your subject. The closer your subject is to white, the closer the value. This is why a preset is taken with a white or neutral gray card.
Since Auto White Balance covers a wide range of temperature, the exact value is not recorded anywhere that I know of. In addition, all White Balance temperatures are approximate values, as per the manual page 35. Having a cast on an image while using Auto White Balance is very possible, just choose another value more suited to the ambient light.
Set the White Balance to K , and capture an image, and this will be reported by the shooting data in Nikon Capture. I have no idea whether ACR is reporting an accurate value or not, we do not support that software, but check this value against what you see in there software."

Photoshop Elements 11 will not read the new Nikon Raw/NEF (from Nikon D750) files even though codec has been downloaded - what do I do?

Unfortunately your software pre-dates the camera. Consider buying PSE13. But it is possible to download and install the latest free DNG converter to convert your raw files to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in PSE11 (keep your NEF originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.8

You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • Elements 11 states that it does not support the camera raw from my new Nikon D600 and that I should

Elements 11 states that it does not support the camera raw from my new Nikon D600 and that I should go to "the Camera Raw help documentation." When I click on the help menu I get a message from my browser stating that it is a dangerous website. Now what

Unfortunately it was clicking on Updates that brought the “dangerous website” pop-up, but several hours later I tried again for the umpteenth time, and it worked! I am so glad because I am working on a project with a deadline.
Thanks for replying. Maybe if someone else has this problem they could be told to wait a few hours and try again.
The main option on the ‘dangerous’ pop-up is a “Get me out of here!” button, which I always clicked. There are options to go to the website anyway, but I am too leery of the web to do that. Now that I know it’s possible to reach the update center without risk I will never consider it.
    Thanks again,

  • Importing Nikon RAW .nef files into iPhoto

I am using iPhoto 8.0.3. I can import RAW .nef files from my D90 without a problem. I also scan my older slides/negs using a CoolScan V and saving those files as RAW .nef format. Problem is that iPhoto does not recognize the .nef files that are scanned. Anybody have some thoughts? I can convert the scanned files into jpg using Nikon View and then bring them in to iPhoto, but would prefer to leave them in the RAW format so I don't have replicant files all over the place.

iPhoto will only work with RAW files on this list

Unfortunately there are no Scanners on the list.

  • Color Difference - Camera Raw & Nikon Raw NEF

    Hello everybody
When i open a Nikon Raw file in Camera Raw (Photosop CC) I notice a distinct color-difference between the integrated preview image in the Raw file and the camera Raw standard.
I want to start with the exact same color how it came from the camera.
Refers to Nikon D300 or D800 in Raw / Nef format.
left, from Camera Raw 8.4.1 "Camera Raw Standard"
right, integrated preview from the original raw-file
Mostly i have the difference in Blue, it's too much cyan in there an looks not "natural"!
    thanks for help

The third icon in from the right (looks like a camera) called camera calibrations is where the presets live that supposedly match that of your camera.
Even though you use those presets, you are not done. To match what you see in your camera, you must manually adjust the sliders under the basic tab until it does match.
What you see in your camera is a processed image, which is applied to a jpg only. The raw file is just that raw, no processing is done to it. Think of it as a negative. It is your permanent record of the image. Camera raw is then used to manually set up the image to your personal liking. Which does a better job the camera or yourself, is dependent on your skills. You can get details out of that raw file that the camera can not.
When you find you are placing the sliders in certain location more than once, then it is time to create a preset in camera raw that stores those settings. The more you use camera raw, more you can see when your own preset can be used (even as a starting point) and when it is time to do everything manually.
So in other words it is going to take time to 1)get a keen eye 2)understand the subtle differences in what each setting does and 3) collect a library of presets that you can use time and again.

  • How to Install Plug-in for PS cs5 to open RAW (.NEF) file for Nikon D810 Camera

I need someone to walk me through how to install a Plug-in for PS cs5 to open RAW (.NEF) file for Nikon D810 Camera.
I haven't used photoshop in ages and I got a new camera. I have been on the phone with Adobe (no help) and spent a couple of hours online trying to figure this out. I'm confused, frustrated and about to throw my computer out the window.
Also, I placed this in the "Photoshop for Beginners" since Photoshop CS5 doesn't appear anymore. I know CS5 is outdated but I spent hundreds of dollars on this program and you would think adobe would still honor its product.
    Any guidance is much appreciated.
    AJ

Odds are cs5 is too old. If you do a search on my the main Adobe website there is a list of compatible cameras for the last known update to camera raw for cs5.
Each version of Photoshop only gets so many updates for camera raw then it is necessary to upgrade Photoshop to get the next update for camera raw.
So you currently have 4 choices.
    1 upgrade Photoshop
2 get Lightroom - latest version
3 get Photoshop elements -latest version
4 get dng converter - this will download the latest version an is the only option that is free.
The dng converter can be found by searching Adobe website.

  • Raw (NEF) files from Nikon D7100 - Work on Elements 10

Has a update or patch been made for using raw (NEF) files from Nikon's D7100 camera?

Photoshop Elements 10 does support Adobe Camera Raw 6.4.1 to 6.7 and minimum requirement for Nikon D7100 is ACR 7.4.

  • How can I display and use the full RAW file?

    Hi,
my camera (Canon S95) has a sensor with 4:3 aspect ratio and thus saves all RAW files in this format. Additionally, the camera can automatically create JPGs with a cropped ratio (e.g. 3:2 or 16:9). This is very helpful because you can see the target format already on the camera screen (with black bars on top and bottom), which helps the composition. However, when processing the photos on the big screen afterwards, it often also helps the photo to adjust the ratio a little bit and therefore use the additional information saved in the bigger 4:3 RAW file. This works very well with many of the freely available software tools.
The problem found in Lightroom is now that it only shows the RAW photo in the cropped format and up to know I have found no way to display or use the full RAW format. So my question is: Which settings do I have to change to use the full format? What do I need to change?
Searching a little bit on the web I found many other photographes having the exactly same problem with many different cameras. However none of them reported to have a solution for this. Still I am pretty sure that there must be a solution, since otherwise this would be a really heavy bug within Lightroom and I cannot imagine that Adobe would leave this matter unsolved.
So I would really appreciate if someone could help me with this.
    Many Thanks
    Martin

    Hi Jao, Victoria, Lee Jay,
Thanks for clearification. Do you have additional information about when this fix will be available and whether at least some popular old cameras will be supported?
What I do not get is why Adobe would need to redo all existing cameras. I think this is a more general issue, where Lightroom misinterpretes the exif data which includes both the exif image height/width as well as the cropped image height/width. Intepreting this information correctly, any software should be able to display both - the full image and the cropped area (as shown by many cheap or free software tools). In the internet I found another workaround for the issue in Lightroom, which is undermining this point: When setting the cropped image height/width to the numbers of exif image height/width manually (e.g. with exif tools), Lightroom actually is able to display the full 4:3 picture.
So this bug should be easily fixed for all cameras and I have no clue why Adobe still has no fixed it with Lightroom already available in version 4.2.
    Cheers
    Martin

    Hi Jim,
yes after I imported my .cr2 raw files into new catalog it started to work. Windows 7 still does not recognize them but I can edit them as you said within the Lr5.6 and then export them into .psd or .dng files...as needed.
I bought Lr5 only because I got present - my new camera Cannon 70D and because my older Photoshop CS5.5 raw plugin does not recognize. cr2 files.
    Many thanks for your help.

  • I have a Lumix G2 camera with two lenses, when I take RAw pics I Convert them using the Adobe RAW co

I have a Lumix G2 camera with two lenses, when I take RAw pics I Convert them using the Adobe RAW converter. Now I have bought a Lumix 25 macro lens and it will not convert these pics into a readable file

That's strange.  The lens shouldn't have made any difference.  Does the camera do JPG OK with that lens fitted?  Did the samera come with software to convert RAW files, and if so, does it work on the problem files?
When I checked your camera against this list, I see it has two entries for the required version, so I suspect that the lens electronics require a slightly later version of ACR.  If I am right, you'll have Camera RAW 5.7 and you need 6.1  So what version of Photoshop do you have?  You need CS5 to support ACR 5.#
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
If you have CS4, then you'll need to install the latest DNG conversion software, which is free.  You'll then be able to open the files in Photoshop CS4

  • Has anybody used the Camera RAW filter on an OpenEXR, HDR or similar floating point color image?

I often work on floating point images rendered out of 3ds Max, specifically OpenEXRs, and I have been lately using the Camera RAW filter to do some image adjustments. There is one problem though, the float image does not load correctly into Camera RAW. It looks slightly over-exposed when loaded and it is nearly impossible to get it back to "scratch". Is Camera RAW not fully float capable? Camera RAW is a drunkard compositor's dream when doing color corrections on a floating point image, especially an image rendered out of a 3D application such as 3ds Max or Maya. Any thoughts?

For what it's worth I have seen this going back a loooong time.  I've posted on the subject as well and have never gotten a solid answer.  It just appears as though Photoshop considers it "already open, so no need to open it twice".  I believe an uninitialized variable could be involved, since it's intermittent.
I have found a couple of choices for workarounds or workflow changes...
    1.  You can save the first-opened document opened (e.g., as  a .PSD) somewhere.  Then reopening the raw file will always open a second document.
    2.  You could consider opening the raw file just once, duplicating it as a second layer, then use Camera Raw as a filter.  Obviously that doesn't avail Camera Raw of the raw data, but its usefulness depends on what you're trying to accomplish.

  • Hello everyone, So When I use the eraser on a photo and try to save it as jpeg is makes is save it as a copy but the parts that I erased are replaced with a white background and thats not what I want

Hello everyone, So When I use the eraser on a photo and try to save it as jpeg is makes is save it as a copy but the parts that I erased are replaced with a white background and thats not what I want

That may not be what you want, but Jpeg images are flattened, without transparency.  Every pixel has a color value, with the default background usually being white.  If you want to crate an image that leaves the erased area transparent, you will need to use an image format such as .gif or .pnc.

  • I cannot move and scale my wallpaper photos, they are too large. Using the lastest iOS on iPad and iPad mini

I have accidentally changed my wallpaper, now when I try to put my old one back it is zoomed in and I can't "move or scale". How can I get the picture back to normal?

    Hello,
This is a big issue, there is a workaround though and some of you may not like it, but here it is and you can decide. It would appear that in order to centre an image in ios7 you need to create a canvas larger than the image. It would appear that Apple have used the 1680 by 1050 format. My recommendation is to create a canvas of 1536 pixels by 1040 pixels and then centre an image of your choice of 1024 by 768 pixels if you wish to see your image in the horizontal format. If you want to view your wallpaper image in the portrait orientation I would recommend an image no larger than 768 pixels wide. You can do this in most imaging software or even in Keynote if you have it. I have sample here if you like http://www.williamsartand photography.com/Untitled.jpg.
