Using the Shuffle Feature on my ITunes

I have created several playlists and all of them work wonderfully, allowing me to shuffle within the playlist - BUT I have one play list that, for whatever reason, will not shuffle. It is one of my favorite playlists and I am getting tired of hearing the songs in the same order over & over. I tried copying all the songs out of the playlist and creating a new one but that didn't work. This play list worked fine (shuffled) in the past but suddenly has stopped working. Any suggestions?

Hello robdaug,
And welcome to Apple Discussions
You can enable the "skip when shuffling" feature for each song you wish not to hear while having your iPod on shuffle.
To enable it, control->click on the song you wish to skip when shuffling in iTunes and choose "Get Info" from the Shortcut menu. When the window pops up, head over to the Options tab. Make sure there is a tick mark next to "skip when shuffling." Then hit OK and sync the updated changes to your iPod.
That should do the trick for you.
Hope this helps.

  • Can you use the shuffle feature within a created playlist from itunes?

Basically I would like to listen to a playlist on my ipod using the shuffle feature. I don't wish to hear the playlist in the same order everytime. Can this be done? If so, how?

Yes. Go to SETTINGS > SHUFFLE, and set it to SONGS. Then, go back, highlight the name of your playlist and press PLAY. It will play just that playlist, and it will be shuffled.

  • HT204266 If I have a play list of various artists and on this list I have two tracks from the same album how can I combine those two tracks to play as one if I am using the shuffle feature?

An example would be Jackson Browne's "The Load Out" &" Stay".They should play one after the other but in a play
list on shuffle setting they don't. How do I combine two songs so they play as one in a shuffled playlist

When I import my music files to iTunes will I be creating new files for every file I import? If the answer is YES; where are those files going to be stored and how much space will they use?
To begin with you can't manage FLAC in iTunes. The use of iTunes is at this moment limited to WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, AAC and MP3. But that's not a problem because if I understand you correctly you want to organize the MP3-files in iTunes.
When you import music files you can let iTunes copy all files and put it in an iTunes-media-Folder. You can make the choice in preferences-->tab advanced.
If you deselect the second blue checkbox (sorry, in Dutch) iTunes won't copy files as you import the files in your library. It will use the files from the place they are on the disk now. So you have a choice. But if you want iTunes to copy them, they will be placed in a folder called iTunesMedia. This is how it placed on your disk.
All files will be put in one music folder well ordered by artist and albums. If you want to make a backup of all your music you just have to copy the iTunes folder to another disk. You can backup all music at once. How much space they will use depends on the bitrate of the MP3 and whether you add more tagging to it. You can have iTunes add album artwork. That means adding gif or jpg files to your library. Are you using bitrate 320 for your MP3?
If you tell me I can give you estimates on the disk-space you will need.

  • I just noticed that I can no longer get the shuffle feature on my iTunes 10.4.0.80 to work. I've turned it off and on, but it still just goes in order of the playlist. I too have been getting an error msg at computer startup.

I'm not sure how long it's been like this, but I just noticed that my songs no longer shuffle when playing from iTunes (running 10.4.0.80). No matter if "shuffle songs" is off or on, they still just play on down the playlist in order.  Could this be related to other problems I'm seeing listed that seem associated with the latest update? I also get an error msg when my computer is starting up that I think is associated with this latest update (something about not being able to read a line from "Apple sync helper" (hope I haven't butchered that too much, haven't had a chance to copy the error msg)). Is this something that's likely to be fixed in a later update?

After looking at other people's posts, I think it's official: there is a bug. Itunes support said I should not have lost the drag/drop tool and I haven't on the laptop that is running itunes 10.4 and operating system 10.6.8. I chatted with someboby who lost both his drag/drop and side scroll and what we have in common is a wacom tablet for a mouse. My laptop is a wireless mouse. I reinstalled whatever updated driver that wacom has out there, shut the system down for night, hoping for magic, but alas none to be had. So if I want to change song order, I network the laptop and desktop, share the screen on the laptop, drag and drop to my heart's content and curse Apple for making me work this hard to find the tool that was once at my fingertips. Apple also let me know that if I want to share songs in household that the hundreds on songs that were purchased for .99 need to be repurchased for another .30. Maybe Apple is holding my drag/drop tool captive til I pay up the money or Maybe the next update will fix the problem, I for one give up for now.

  • Can you use the shuffle feature within a created folder?

    if so, how?

If you're talking about a folder on the iPod shuffle, I don't think you can create such a thing. If the folder you're talking about is an iTunes Playlist, then yes. (Although I have one where it doesn't seem to work.)
Another thing you can do, if this is really an iTunes question, is select Party Shuffle in the Source list, then select the playlist you want to shuffle from in Source below the main window.
    Good luck

Going back to your original post:
    5) Tried running Itunes in 'safe mode', running itunes as an administrator..nothing.
Was that iTunes' safe mode as opposed to Windows' safe mode? iTunes safe mode is invoked by holding down CTRL+SHIFT immediately after clicking the icon to launch iTunes and continuing to hold until this message pops up:
Click continue, then close iTunes and reopen. With luck iTunes now opens normally every time.

  • HT1349 I downloaded the latest version of iTunes and now I cannot play the songs in order, they skip around randomly. The shuffle feature is off. All I really want to do is play an album from start to finish.

I downloaded the latest version of iTunes and now I cannot play the songs in order. It will skip around or just stop playing the song currently playing when it is finished. I just want to play an album from start to finish. The shuffle feature is turned off.

It is working now. I no longer get the message about the item not being available in the US and I can access the store.

  • What is wrong with the Shuffle feature???

When shuffle is on, and I have 130 songs on my phone, it should never, ever play the same song twice, until it has cycled through them all. You'd think this would be basic shuffle logic.
But well over 30% of the time, it replays songs it played within the last 10 songs. And yes, all my songs are set to 'White' on the little shuffle icon. None are set to blue (repeat).
Sometimes it will go about 10 songs, and then repeat just one. Then another later. The longer I listen, the more it will begin to replay a song it's already played in that listening session.
Ultimately, I believe I hit maybe 30 or 40 of the 130 total songs. I don't think I've ever branched out past this.
After driving in my car for about 40 mins, there is absolutely no reason I should ever hear another song, with 130 on the iPhone. But as each new song comes on, I have to go past 3 or 4 of them just to get to a "new" one that hasn't already played.
Can someone tell me whats up with this?
I do see something in iTunes that allows you to give songs a "Star" rating of some sort on your playlist. I believe this makes them "more" or "less" important and may increase their probability of of being played more often. If this is the case, how can I set them all to zero stars in one swoop?
    Thanks

I don't believe song ratings has anything to do with the Shuffle feature on the iPhone, or on a iPod. iTunes includes an option to play higher rated songs more often when using the Party Shuffle feature.
If a Reset has no effect, you shouldn't lose anything when Restoring your iPhone with iTunes.
iTunes creates and maintains a backup for your iPhone when syncing. Your iPhone's backup is updated if needed as the first step during the sync process - if any of the data stored with your iPhone's backup has changed since the last sync.
The backup stores your iPhone settings, including email accounts, SMS messages, notes created with the Notes application, cities tracked with the Weather widget, stocks tracked with the Stocks widget, Maps bookmarks, youtube bookmarks, recent calls, call favorites, visual voicemail, alarms, World Clock settings, and photos captured by your iPhone - but I wouldn't depend on this one.
Before restoring your iPhone, you should import any photos to your computer that are available on your iPhone that were captured by your iPhone, and then sync to update your iPhone's backup if needed.
When restoring, your iPhone is completely erased, and then the current firmware version is re-installed. After the current firmware version is re-installed, you are prompted to restore your iPhone from your iPhone's backup, which is the default selection. The other option is to restore your iPhone as a new iPhone, or not from your iPhone's backup. This must be followed by a sync to re-transfer the data that should remain on your computer, such as iTunes content, contact information, calendar events, bookmarks, and photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone.
I believe the logic and reasoning behind doing a Reset first, which doesn't affect any data or settings, is it may make a difference. It is possible to do a Restore without losing any data, which may make a difference if a Reset doesn't.

  • How can i set songs within a playlist, or an entire playlist, so that they are not included when using the shuffle function on IPOD Classic? Is this possible?

How can i set songs within a playlist, or an entire playlist, so that they are not included when using the shuffle function on IPOD Classic?
    Is this possible?

You can set any song to Skip when shuffling.
In your iTunes Library, highlight the song and right-click/Get Info. On the Options tab is the Skip when shuffling box. Select that and then Sync the iPod with your Library.

  • The true randomness of the Shuffle feature... ?

I have the iPhone 3GS with well over 2,000 songs copied over.I generally like to "Shuffle" so that I can have some sense of random sound experience.
What I've found is that the Shuffle function may not be as random as we might expect. For example, what are the statistical probabilities that songs by artist X would play 5 times in an hour after the list was Shuffled? I've found that on some days, it seems one artist re-appears frequently, but not all of my songs are actually being played -- indeed some repeat (and there are no duplicates).
So I'm curious if anyone has experienced this, or if I'm just experiencing a gremlin in my iPhone

I have noticed that since switching to the IPhone, that the shuffle feature is not what it used to be. My first clue was repetition of songs. I have, in some cases, the original studio version, a 'best of' version and a live version. The IPhone plays them back to back - very irritating! I then watched a sequence of shuffling and noted that the songs were being played in alphabetical order - hardly random.
I just re-tested it and now it is playing more randomly. Sounds like a software bug to me!
A true shuffle feature used to be one of the best parts of IPod. I can buy an mp3 player for 25% of the cost of an IPod so without some advanced features it hardly seems worth it.

I would like to use an external monitor (plasma tv) with my MacBook Pro also, which has a resolution 1365x768 - a resolution which is not available under the Display Preferences. I can use the plasma at a 4:3 radio resolution, but I don't see ANY 16:9 radio resolutions available.
Have you found a solution to this yet?

unless i'm missing something, i think you got mixed up, this is easy google for walk throughs
i'm assuming this is the new 3tb tc AC or 'tower' shape, if so, its wifi will run circles around your at&t device
unplug the at&t box for a minute and plug it back in
factory reset your tc - unplug it, hold down reset and keep holding while you plug it back in - only release reset when amber light flashes in 10-20s
connect the tc to your at&t box via eth in the wan port, wait 1 minute, open airport utility look in 'other wifi devices' to setup the tc
create a new wifi network (give it a different name than your at&t one) and put the tc in bridge mode (it may do this automatically for you, but you should double check) under the 'network' tab
login to your at&t router and disable wifi on it
add new clients to the new wifi network, and point your Macs to the time machine for backups

  • How do I use the OCR feature in Acrobat 9?

Does Acrobat 9 have the OCR feature?  If so, where do I find it?  In Acrobat 8, one would go to Document, OCR Text Recognition, Recognize Test Using OCR, OK.  I specifically want to know how to apply OCR to a scanned document in order to use the Find feature.

Simple. go to DOCUMENT, and then select OCR TEXT RECOGNITION.

  • How do I make the Shuffle Setting on my iTunes More Random?

    Hi,
I've just recently got my iPod classic (finally) and I love it! But, I have a question about iTunes. My question is: How do I get the shuffle setting in my iTunes to be more random? I have "The iPod Book" by Scott Kelby and looked this up, but I have the fourth edition, and so the picture for the iTunes > Preferences > Playback > picture is not the same as mine. I can't find the bar to slide the shuffle setting to more random or as Apple puts it " least likely". Not that it's the most important topic in the world, but I already have a total of almost 1500 songs and I'm still having to skip because I have music from the same album or the same song(s) popping up about 4 tracks later. This is really frustrating since part of the reason I bought it was to listen to ALL my music shuffled, but instead I spend more time switching through my music to finally get to something different. Does anybody know how to do this with the new iTunes version? Also to clarify, I have already searched through the automatic help that's offered in iTunes and nothing is coming up that helps me, and I've tried searching Support here on the website and ll I get is how to either turn shuffle on or tech support for having an iPod shuffle, not how to make it more random

I took a play list of 3500 songs and sorted first by album name and then by track.
Is there some reason you think you needed to sort by Album first?
As soon as you sort on any other column, iTunes doesn't care you sorted this first. It is now ignored.
I don'dt know if we have a semantics problem
    We don't.
Sorting by Album first then sorting by Track # sorts by Track #  and Album name as the secondary sort.
You don't need to first sort by Album.
    THIS DOES NOTHING!
When you sort by Track #...
    Abbey Road -Track 1
    Americana - Track 1
    Anthology - Track 1
    Abbey Road -Track 2
    Americana - Track 2
    Anthology - Track 2
Therefore both the primary and secondary sorts mean something.
    Correct.
You are not selecting the secondary sort. Sorting by Track #, the secondary sort is always Album.
    Try this.
Sort by Artist then sort by Track #.
It is now sorted as above.
Sorting by 1 column then another does absolutely nothong (except take a few more mouseclicks).
    I rest my case.
