Using the Tab Key in Simulations

Hi, I am new to this forum and new to Captivate 5.
I am creating online courses that teach people how to use our company's software programs so I use Captivate simulations often. We use Captivate to record the simulations and then we use Articulate Presenter to create the course.
Problem 1
I still can't figure out how to use Tabs smoothly with Text Entry boxes all together. I've been reading all of the forum information and trying everything and the Tab won't work correctly for me.
I have only placed one TEB on a slide but when I get to the second TEB on the next slide, I start typing the text and the system moves forward to the next action before I finish typing the text. Or, I have to press the Tab key twice to get to the next TEB on the next slide. I am totally confused.
Problem 2
I have been able to successfully create a simulation using the Enter key to validate text entry boxes. I publish the simulation and use the swf file to create a web object that gets placed in Articulate. The web object holds the swf file and the html file below.

This works just fine when I use the Enter key to validate text entry boxes. However, we decided to use the Tab key and now I have to deal with the seamless tabbing issues in Captivate. I figured out how to add the seemless tab info to the published file, Can I use the Captivate html file to create a web object? If so, how do I do that?

I have had success using TAB in Captivate 5.
I learned:
Dont put Text Entry Boxes on the timeline appearing at 0 seconds. Have them appear at 0.2. This gives it time to load.
Make sure they are on the top layer.
Appear for the duration of the slide, no transitions, and pause until the user clicks.
I noticed if you type fast (as the learner) it kinda messes everything up. Add a distraction so you learner slows down on their typing speed.
Also make sure you have the update installed. There were some bugs fixed in the TEB area.

Using the tab key in a list and keeping a table format when copying and pas

when I transfer a table from a microsoft word document or PDF file to the pages document, it does not keep the table and only the data inside the table. how do I keep the table?
Also, how do I keep the numbers from indenting when I do a list. for example, if I need to indent part of the sentence for writing specifications of something, I want to use the tab key to move away from the first part of the sentence, but it moves everything and not just my marker.

Not if it decides the list is a list, it can't.
The app never "decide that a list is alist". It does what you ask it to do.
Of course, if you refuse to disable the preference which automatically treats a paragraph as a new list entry I can't help you.
If the datas are stored as a list, the bullets are not part of the datas themselves so they will not be copied.
As I already responded the "Copy" tool doesn't copy attributes.
We have to choose:
we are using lists and the bullets can't be copied
or
we are using text arranged in columns and, if we put bullets, these bullets may be copied.

Why can't I use the tab key to highlight links on a webpage?

In previous versions of FF and in other browsers, I can use the tab key to navigate through all the links on a webpage - I can't seem to do this with FF5, the tab key will only highlight the address bar, search bar, and any form fields within a webpage.
Using the tab key to navigate through links on a page is an accessibility feature, and I often use it to show hidden skip links at the top of a webpage for users who prefer to use the keyboard over a mouse and for assistive technologies.
Is this something that can be turned back on in preferences? Or is there a reason why it was removed from this version?

It can be fixed in Mac OS X Tiger preferences (Keyboard -> "all controls") or try a ctr-F7

How do you navigate dialogue boxes using the tab key in Photoshop CS6 on Mac OS X Mavericks?

I know that seems really 101 and obvious, but I worked in Photoshop on a PC for many years, and using the tab key to navigate through every field/radial button/dropdown menu/etc. was never an issue. On the Mac OS X however, it only navigates through certain fields within a dialogue box. And before the guaranteed suggestion to change my Mac OS X Keyboard preferences to allow full keyboard access to "All Controls" instead of "Text Boxes and Lists Only", I have already tried this setting which did not resolve my issue.
Does/has anyone out there worked between both platforms and had this issue as well? I'm a Mac guy through and through, but I must say, this is the one thing that I think PC has a slight edge on. It's incredibly frustrating to have my keyboard workflow interrupted because I can't simply tab over to a certain field that is in a dialogue box which I'm currently working in...

Photoshop CS6 (13.0.6)
Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)
Applies to all filetypes as the issue is regarding dialogue boxes and not files themselves.
No error message.
Normal use.
It works on PC, but not on Mac.
2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 Processor
8 GB of memory
719 GB of space available on my main HD
This has never worked in any version of Photoshop I have used on any version of Mac OS X, but has worked consistently on every version of Photoshop that I have used on every version of Windows I've used (up to Windows 7)
I hope this provides enough information to get the ball rolling on this. I fear that there is no answer that will resolve the issue, but before I throw in the towel, I figured it was worth trying this forum since my web searches have turned up absolutely nothing of help.

Thanks for your input. Since Safe Mac's Adware Removal tool has done a very good job of cleaning out the junk and
letting me run better, I'm happy for now.
However, I appreciate your judgement and I am working on evaluating Safari vs FireFox vs Chrome. I've had some trouble using FireFox with
LastPass which works very well under Chrome. But that is only one data point. Most of my Ram troub;e os related to the number of windows
and tabs I open. I've tried comparing the three browsers for how back each reacts.
I multiply windows and tabs because as I surf the web, I discover things I want and don't want to lose them. However, I need a tool more useful
and structured than bookmarks to be able to record things of interest to make them easy to return to and find later.

Not able to use the Tab key to Tab indent when within a text edit window...

Two questions please... First one is above for the tab function. In Safari I just need to press control+option+tab to indent a tab within a text edit box on a website. This function is being used more via cloud and mobile capability.
Second... I can, in Safari, Copy and paste a site with tables. Works great in Safari. When I try to do this in FF I lose the formatting of the tables and it just give plain text without the tabled fields.
I would love to use FF because the compatibility if much greater than Safari, but... I need my functionality as well to do my work to the best and quickest ability.

Up until last week, I was able to use the tab key when typing emails and other multi-line text boxes.
Suddenly the behavior of the tab key changed. This isn't the first time. It's been quite a while ago that the function of the tab key changed from indenting to moving around the page, then after some time it changed back to indenting.
Can we get this fixed and leave it alone, please?
I may give one of those add-ins a try, but my problem with add-ins is that they break when FF is patched or upgraded, then I'm left with out the solution they provide.
Can we just fix Firefox, please?

P.S. Another potential fix I came across suggested starting FF in safe mode to see if the problem goes away. It does not. It seems to be a change to FF that appeared after an update last week. On or just befor 24 Apr.

Cp4 and Accessibility - Using the Tab key

What is the best way to create a Cp4 files where the viewer uses the Tab key to navigate through the course?

Why do I have to use the tab key even more to tab between page elements.

Firefox versions prior to ver 4 I used the tab key to tab between page elements (form elements, buttons, etc). I upgraded to ver 4 and now when I tab from form element to form element I first see a gray line outlining the element area and then another press of the tab the element becomes active for me to use. I now have to use double the tab keys to move between form elements.

I can not use the tab key to move to the next field or use the shift and tab to move to the prior field in forms.

After updating to 7.0.1 I can not always use the tab key to move to the next field or use the shift and tab to move to the prior field in forms. This always worked in previous versions and it's much needed for my type of work. Does anyone know of a setting to activate this? If not can the Firefox developers work on this issue (please). I tried in safe mode and the tab key worked just fine. I'm not sure about all web forms I've only recently updated to 7.0. The wen form I was using was for appraisal purposes and it has multiple data fields to fill in and also drop down menus to select from. Might I always have to use Firefox in safe mode to be able to utilize the tab between field feature? Thanks for your help!

Using the Escape key in simulations and assessments

I have recently recorded a simulation/assessment that needs to use the Escape key to close a pop-up window and returns to the main application window. The recording has not been an issue; however, using Escape with failure messages is proving to be tricky. Here's what I have discovered while resording my sim/assess, along with my questions:
When I press Escape, Captivate captures this keystroke as a shortcut attached to a Click Box. This works on the assessment side, but fails to produce a failure message on the assessment side when the user does not press the Escape key.
I need to produce a failure message when the user does not press Escape.
Can I storethe unicode value of Escape in a TEB variable and then use an if . . . else statement to either advance to the next slide (success action) or produce a caption that mimics a failure caption? If so, how would I write this item?
Could I use a Loss of focus trigger instead?
Does Captivate have a variable that records a unicode value (Something like CPKeyPressedValue"?
Are there any other alternatives?

In the case of buttons and clickbox objects, where clicking is allowed, the failure is normally registered when the user CLICKS OUTSIDE the button or click box. The evaluation of Success/Fail happens on the click.
In the case of a Text Entry Box, the interactivity is all about what the user enters into the text field and whether or not it is correct/incorrect when compared to approved answer text. The main purpose of the TEB object is not centered on the clicking of the button that accompanies the text field. The button just provides a way to trigger the Success/Failure evaluation of the user interaction with the text field.
Since you have deselected Allow Mouse Click for your click box, you've effectively made it mandatory to use keystrokes to trigger the Success/Failure evaluation of the object. So clicking outside the box is no longer going to do anything because Allow Mouse Click is off. You'll get a failure message on this click box now for many (but not all) keystrokes that are not the one assigned.
By the way, using the Escape key as a keystroke if you Preview the project in Captivate just shuts down the preview (as you've probably already found out).

[Bug?] How to use the Tab key in forms

The latest release of Photoshop has "broken" the native behavior of the Tab key in html panels. I'm not sure if this is a bug or just a new API I need to incorporate.
Expected behavior:
1. Focus into text field in a form
2. Hit the Tab key
3. The next field is focused.
Actual behavior
1. Focus into text field in a form
2. Hit the Tab key
3. Photoshop hides the application UI (Photoshop hotkey tab behavior).
Anyone happen to know if there's something that can be done about this?

Bug is very annoying for our users when they try to input their usernames and passwords to login (often) and also when they're filling out a large form with four fields in it.
Hope it is fixed soon or a work around provided.

I want to use the tab key to go from To CC Subject From Body

I just reloaded my 10.5.4 MBP and in Mail, when composing, I used to be able to tab through the From field and choose an account. Now Mail skips over the From field and goes straight to the body field. Can anyone tell me how to get that feature back?

Try this: controlfunctionF7 (or just control F7 if you have the function keys already accessible) or if that doesn't work you can go to System Preferences -> Keyboard & Mouse -> Keyboard Shortcuts and change the Full Keyboard Access to "All controls" (it's at the bottom of the window). You should be able to tab through now.

Using the TAB command

Hello Captivators!
I'm a beginner to this application...so here's my problem.
Everytime I use TAB as my "Current shortcut" it highlights
the playbar after hitting the TAB key. Why is that? Am I using the
wrong object? For instance, a TEXT ENTRY object is used for typing
and the shortcut key used is the TAB key.
Any information will be greatly appreciated :)

If you do a search for TAB in this forum, you will see
multiple posts regarding this issue.
Basically, if there is anyway to avoid using the TAB key in
your simulation it would be the best solution. However, I have to
use the TAB key for all of mine.
I have removed the playbar control from the skin and created
my own buttons. I still see the back button occasionally get called
out for the next interaction but less frequently than with the
playbar on.

This is not a reply but a question on the subject of the Tab
key in particular. I have been attempting to run the 30 day trial
version with no luck so I need to ask those who are already using
the software; can you tell me if the user can move from one
interactive text box to the next using the
Tab key? Can more than one interactive text box be added to
the same page?

Yes, Tab can be configured as a shortcut for interactive
elements. There may be some tweaking needed to make it work in some
cases, but it is there.
As for inserting more than a single interactive text box on a
slide, I'm guessing here that you are referring to what we call a
"Text Entry Box" object. An area where the user is expected to type
something in and use an action to evaluate what they typed. And
yes, more than one may be used on a slide. However, in practice, we
find that is not the most desirable way to use them. More often
than not, you would want to limit to a single Text Entry Box object
on a slide.

I can only scroll using the arrow keys. In IE/C I can use the touch pad to slide my fingers to scroll. Why cant i do this in FF?!?!

On my laptop (and most for that matter) you can use the touch pad to slide your fingers to scroll thru a web page. I cannot do this in firefox. It is very annoying and I dont know why cant do this?
I have reinstalled FF and it still wont scroll! Every other browser i can scroll thru a web page using the touch pad method.
Why cant i do this on FF?

Full keyboard access is useful for people who have difficulty using a mouse. Safari supports standard full keyboard access shortcuts for buttons and menus. If you choose, you can also use the keyboard to highlight links in webpages.
To turn on full keyboard access:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Keyboard & Mouse.
Click Keyboard Shortcuts.
Select the checkbox to turn on full keyboard access.
To highlight links in webpages using the Tab key:
Choose Safari > Preferences and click Advanced.
Select the option to highlight each item on the web page using the Tab key.
With full keyboard access turned on, Safari uses the standard shortcut keys to access menus and windows, plus the additional shortcuts shown in the table.
