Using the USP Port on Airport Express for Something Other Than a Printer

Can you use the Airport Express for, let's say, making a thumbdrive wireless? Or perhaps a wired keyboard wireless?
Will that work?
If not, is there a device that will make a USB product wireless?

You may want to invesitgate the Keyspan USB Server.

  • Opening Ports on Airport Express for GTA IV

I am told that to play Grand Theft Auto 4 (GTA 4) properly, I need to "open ports" on my router and enable UPnP (Universal Plug-n-Play).
The ports I am supposed to open are:
    UDP
    3478
    3479
    6672
    28900
    TCP
    80
    443
    5223
    3478
    3479
    3480
    8001
    8080
    27900
On my Windows 2000 machine, using the AirPort Admin Utility, when I configure the AirPort, I get a window that has a "port mapping" tab.
Is this how I open the ports listed above? If so, it asks for a private IP address, Public Port, and Private port. How do all these relate to the port numbers above?
In the configure base station window, i can't find any mention of how to enable UPnP
    Thanks!!!!!
PS, don't hate on me for having a PC, i'm just waiting until Apple comes out with a BluRay capable laptop...

Hello Psychos40. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    Yes.
    To setup Port Mapping:
Assign a manual IP to the host device
The "host" device is the computer that will be hosting GTA and needs to be accessed from the Internet. Under Windows 2000, you would use Network Settings to assign a static IP address to this computer. Note: Be sure to assign an IP address outside of the DHCP range provided by the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) default range of 10.0.1.2 - 10.0.1.200, like 10.0.1.201
To setup port mapping on an AirPort Express Base Station (AX), connect to the AX's wireless network, and then use the AirPort Admin Utility to change these settings:
    Port Mapping tab
    o Click "Add"
o Public Port: <enter the Port # which will be accessed from the Internet>
o Private Address: <enter the static IP address from above>
o Private Port: <either enter the same value as the Public port or the value you want your application/service to answer on>
    o Click "Ok"
o Repeat the last series of steps for each port you wish to map.
In the configure base station window, i can't find any mention of how to enable UPnP
Unfortunately, that's because the AirPorts do not support UPnP. Instead, the AirPorts have a similar feature known as "NAT Port Mapping Protocol." You enable/disable this function on the Ethernet Port Security tab under Base Station Option within the AirPort Admin Utility. Note: Although NPmP is similar, it is not the same as UPnP and may not offer the same features. If GTA requires UPnP, the AirPort's NPmP feature may not support it.

  • TA20713 Can I connect and IP Phone to the LAN port on Airport Express?

I am having difficulty connecting my internet phone to the internet.  I have a Comcast Modem with only 1 ethernet port which is connected to the Airport Express.  We are using a secured wireless network and I do not have a way of entering a password or identifiying the network on the Internet Phone.  Will I be able to connect the phone to the LAN for Internet access or do I need something else?  Normally I would simply try this out, but we have an old Airport express as the primary wireless router and we'll need to re-work out in home network a bit to get the newer Airport closer to the phone.  I'd like to know if this is doable before we put all the effort in.  Thank you

Can I connect my Xbox 360 to the Ethernet port on my fios box? I have a wireless connection right now but is slow and lags. For me to run an ether from the router it would have to be very very long and go the the kitchen. So I was wondering if I could get it via the Ethernet port on my box directly into my xbox
The Ethernet port on the "fios box" (I assume you are referring to a DVR/STB) is not active.  However it's easy to use a MoCA adapter to get a direct connection if you have a working coax outlet.  Simply search "MoCA adapter" in the "Ask the Community" search box for details.  Also look here:

  • Can Slingbox solo be plugged into the Ethernet port on airport express to connect to network?

Slim box requires a wired connection to your network unless you purchase their sling link to create a wireless connection through your home electrical outlets.  Can an airport express be used instead?  Would the sling box plug into the Ethernet port on the express or though the USB port.

It may be possible as the 802.11n AirPort Express can be configured to enable its Ethernet port for wired clients in one of two methods: 1) The Express is extending another AirPort, or 2) The Express is configured as a wireless Ethernet bridge.

  • What is the approximate range of Airport Express for iPad2?

What is the approximate range for Airport Express to use with iPad2?

Clearly the range is impacted by the walls in the transmission path.  However, I was able to get about sixty feet.  As this was no different than that with my Westell-7500 modem/router ("g" standard) from Verizon, I returned the Express.

  • How much power can deliver the USB port on AirPort Express?

I am developing an appliance that requieres access to a WiFi router and a power source (UL 60950-1 compliant) of less than one watt (100-200 mA @ 3.3V) to power my own WiFi device, and the AirPort Express can be the right device to solve both problems with minimun overhead. The problem is that I cannot find the specification of the current / power limits of its USB port.
To check if it can provide the usual five unit loads, I tried to charge an iPhone 4, but it fails showing the message "Charging is not supported with this accessory", and an external 2.5" HD which requires 500 mA causes the following message to appear on AirPort Utility:
    USB Power
A device connected to this AirPort base station's USB port requires more power than this AirPort base station can provide. Plug the device into a power supply if possible, or connect it to a powered USB hub.
    Any insight will be welcome.

Never mind - I tried "rebooting". I hate it how that always works!

  • How do I use the USB port on my MBP for audio output

I am a fairly new commercial sound provider running live sound and the occassional itunes type playback at events.  I currently use a Y cable from the headphone output of my MBP osX  into the RCA inputs on my audio mixer.  On an older HP laptop I was able to use a USB output into the USB input of the mixer and the sound was a lot better in quality. I wish to do the same using the new MBP but when I plugged into the right side USB port I received no audio output.  What am I doing wrong?  Thanks howardfrom nh.

Have you gone into the Sound/Output system preferences to see if your mixer shows up there as a valid output device and if it does selected it there? If it doesn't appear, have you confirmed with the manufacturer of your mixer that it is compatible with Macs and if so asked if there are any drivers you need to install?
    Regards.

  • Can i connect a printer to the usb port on airport express

I've setup my Airport Express 802.11n with my HP Deskjet D2600 series printer, reset, reconfigured, etc. but it is still saying "Printer is offline" when I try to print. What am I missing?

Never mind - I tried "rebooting". I hate it how that always works!

  • MacPro Mini PCIe for something other than Airport. How about SSD?

I installed an OCZ MiniPCI-Express 64GB SSD card in my 2009 Nahalem Mac Pro with hopes to be able to boot from it. It's not being recognized by the System Profiler under Airport and the SSD drive isn't showing up in Disk Utility. Does anyone know if this setup is possible. Do i need some sort of a driver for this SSD?

    I've asked this question [before|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2120142].
    Nobody knew the answer...
My guess is that you need a MiniPCI-E SSD card with an on-board SATA controller. Most of these MiniPCI-E SSD's are made for laptops or netbooks, which have special MiniPCI-E slots for these cards, where the slot supports SATA.

  • Advantages of using ATV Ethernet port to airport express

Any advantages of connecting my Apple TV via Ethernet. The extended from an exteme late model express is providing 300 Mb/s. at a data rate of -51 dBm in 802.11a/n.

Yes! Configure the current one as a WDS Main and the new one as a WDS Remote to a wired client. These instructions can be done with an Express:

  • Reset airport express for each use.

I use the AE both for home to stream music, at the office to extend a network and while traveling to create wireless network in hotel rooms. Each time I have to reset the base station and basically start over. I use Leopard at home and Vista at work and travel. Is there something I can do to not have to go through the whole setup process each time? Thanks.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by you "have to reset the base station and basically start over", but you may find useful the ability to your AirPort Express to hold multiple "profiles". In AirPort Utility initiate a manual setup, then pull down the "Base Station" menu and select "Manage Profiles". You can then define a profile for each environment. You'll still have to restart your AirPort Express unit each time you need to switch profiles, but you won't have to re-enter any configuration settings.

  • Can I use the Airport Express to connect to a Linksys Wireless Network and then use the Ethernet port on the Airport for a wired connection to a device for internet access?  Would I be able to then also use that Ethernet pt to a Ntwk Hub for more wired c

Thanks for the help.  Looked but not clear on what I am trying to do as being possible.  Can I use an Airport Express to connect wireless to a Linksys Wireless Router, such that I can then use the Ethernet ports on the Airport to either connected to a PC wired, or even use a hub off the Airport Express to allow multiple wired connections to it?
I am not looking to have the Airport Express extend my wireless network, just connect to it and provide me wired connections in a different location from where my Linksys Route is located.  Would prefer to replace Linksys with all Apple, but just not possible financially yet.  Thanks for the help.

If the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is an 802.11n model, then yes, you can reconfigure it as a wireless Ethernet bridge. In this configuration, the AX would join the wireless network provided by the Linksys router and its Ethernet port would be enabled for either a single wired device or for an Ethernet hub or switch for multiple devices.

hi i got a new airport express for christmas and i set it up as per instructions ,i even give a static ip and wpa2 security ..the problem is is when i come to want to use it it says its not on my network and a orange triangle shows .when i reboot it works..then if i leave it a while and try iy agian its disapeared of my network...i have a bt hub 3 ....any help please ..im not sure if itsa faulty express

I really don't have an answer for that one. I guess that while trying to get things working correctly, I would use the most basic monitor I had which in your case would be the Eizon using the Thunderbolt port and adaptor.
When you boot into Safe Mode the startup is quite slow, but you should get the Apple logo and then the spinning gear below it (release the SHIFT key when it appears.) Then after a little more time you should see a gray progress bar appear below the spinning gear. When that disappears the computer will startup to a login screen.

  • Can I use the Ethernet Port for a computer when it is also used as a wireless network with an Airport Extreme as the access point for the wireless network

Can I use the Ethernet Port  of the A1264 Airport Express to connect to the Ethernet port of a computer that does not have wireless capability when the Airport Express is also used on a wireless network with an Airport Extreme 5th generation as the access point for the network?
    I have AE 5th gen
looking to buy (from ebay) the AEX A1264
Various computers, printers and hubs for the network
    Is this possible to do?

Bob, Thanks for the info. I have read different articles that said yes, but I wanted to make sure before I commit to buy. I have an older A1084 which I could not use the Ethernet port. I know at one point I was able to when I was on 10.4. Now that I am on an Intel processor and 10.8 I am going to have to upgrade some of my Apple wireless hardware.
    Thanks Again.
