Using "this" in JSP?

<SELECT onchange="window.location.href=this.options
    [this.selectedIndex].value">
<OPTION VALUE="http://www.microsoft.com/ie">
    Internet Explorer</OPTION>
<OPTION VALUE="http://www.microsoft.com">
    Microsoft Home</OPTION>
<OPTION VALUE="http://msdn.microsoft.com">
    Developer Network</OPTION>
</SELECT>When I choose one of the options in this drop/down list I understand that "onchange" gets "fired".
I thought that selectedIndex took an argument corresponding to the option in the list (selectedIndex(2) is the second option in the drop/down-list). But here "this" is used in front of selectedIndex. Hope someone can explain.

Technically this is javascript and not java.
"this" refers to the event on which the object was fired. In this case it refers to the select object.
"selectedIndex" is an attribute of the select object, which tells it the index of the option which was selected.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/workshop/author/dhtml/reference/properties/selectedindex.asp
this.options gets you the list of options belonging to the select.
so
this.options[this.selectedIndex] is the actual selected option object.

  • Why can't my jsp use this bean??

    hi,
    i'm stuck with this problem since yesterday. hope anyone can help me sort this out. i'll try to state my problem here as clear as possible...
    i have a jsp page named call.jsp which i put in the folder
    C:\Tomcat 5.5\webapps\ROOT\mypage\
    here's the content (partially) of the call.jsp
    <%@ page import = "login.*" %>
    <jsp:useBean id="mybean" class="login.loginDB"/>and here's the content of the bean which this call.jsp is trying to call. name of the bean is loginDB.java. i put the the loginDB.java inside this folder:
    C:\Tomcat 5.5\webapps\ROOT\mypage\WEB-INF\classes\login
    then i compiled the java file using the command prompt
    C:\Tomcat 5.5\webapps\ROOT\mypage\WEB-INF\classes\login\javac loginDB.java
    and so the output is loginDB.class which obviously is placed in the folder C:\Tomcat 5.5\webapps\ROOT\mypage\WEB-INF\classes\login\
    here's the content of loginDB.java:
    package login;
    import java.sql.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class loginDB implements java.io.Serializable {
         private String dbServer = "localhost";
         private String dbName = "toyo-SMP";
         //getter
         public String getdbServer(){
              return dbServer;
         public String getdbName(){
              return dbName;
    }so the problem is, everytime i call call.jsp, this error will come out:
    org.apache.jasper.JasperException: /SMP-toyo/logoutPekerja.jsp(85,0) The value for the useBean class attribute login.loginDB is invalid.
         org.apache.jasper.servlet.JspServletWrapper.handleJspException(JspServletWrapper.java:512)

    btw i'm using tomcat 5.5.20 with jdk 1.5

    I got it why you are getting below above error: You should have a public constructor in your bean class without any arguments. Modify your bean like this:
    package login;
    import java.sql.*;
    import java.util.*;
    public class loginDB implements java.io.Serializable {
         private String dbServer = "localhost";
         private String dbName = "toyo-SMP";
    //Constructor
         public loginDB (){
         //getter
         public String getdbServer(){
              return dbServer;
         public String getdbName(){
              return dbName;
    }

    Ok The class isn't found, so your classpath settings of netbeans (if you are using the run function in netbeans) isn't set.
    and if you aren't using netbeans to run it, then the class isn't in the webapp/WEB-INF/classes

  • Help me!! How to use JavaScript with JSP ??

    I am using JDeveloper and I created a screen in JSP which uses a bean for database connectivity and retriving info onto the page.
    The page has a ListBox where list items are populated from the database.My requirement is
    whenever the list is changed the page shuold be refreshed with the selected item info.
    I tried to use 'JavaScript' for triggering the event with 'onChange' event of the ListBox.But the event is not getting invoked. I think JavaScript is not working with JSP.
    Please help me with how to Use javaScript with JSP or any other alternative where I can meet my requirement.
    I have one more question...I have gone through the JSP samples in OTN and I am trying do download the sample 'Travel servlet' which show list of countries...etc
    I have also gone through the 'readme' but I don't know how to extract .jar file.
    I would be great if you could help me in this.

    We have a similar need. We have used Cold Fusion to display data from Our Oracle Database. We have a simple SElect Box in HTML populated with the oracle data. When someone selects say the State of Pennsylvania. then we have an On change event that runs a Javascript to go get all the cities in Pennsylvania.
    Proble we are having is that inorder for the Javascript to work , we currently have to send all the valid data.
    Do you know of any way to dynamically query the the Oracle database in Javascript

    please tell me the solution.

    Hi, I don't know if it may be the cuase of your problems, but you should narrow the Object obtained doing the lookup, like this:
    FirstHome home = (FirstHome) PortableRemoteObject.narrow(ctx.lookup("FirstEJB"), FirstHome.class);

      catch (Exception e) {
           e.printStackTrace();
           return false;
    String a="http://www.google.com";
    %>
    <%= exists(a)%>and i want to see in my jsp page the result.. it means that JSP page shows
    TRUE
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi there,
    One solution is to use JavaBeans and call the methods for the JavaBean from the JSP page.
    Suppose you have a JavaBean called TestConnectionBean as follows:
    package test22;
    import java.net.HttpURLConnection;
    import java.net.URL;
    import java.net.MalformedURLException;
    import java.io.IOException;
      Set the testUrl before checking if connection exists.
    public class TestConnectionBean {
        String testUrl;
        boolean connectionExists;
        public TestConnectionBean() {
        public String getTestUrl() {
            return testUrl;
        public void setTestUrl(String testUrl) {
            this.testUrl = testUrl;
        public boolean getConnectionExists() throws IOException, MalformedURLException {
            HttpURLConnection.setFollowRedirects(false);
            // note : you may also need
            //        HttpURLConnection.setInstanceFollowRedirects(false)
            HttpURLConnection con = null;
            con = (HttpURLConnection) new URL(this.testUrl).openConnection();
            con.setRequestMethod("HEAD");
            return (con.getResponseCode() == HttpURLConnection.HTTP_OK);
        public void setConnectionExists(boolean connectionExists) {
            this.connectionExists = connectionExists;
    }Then you can create a JSP page like this:
    <%@ page contentType="text/html;charset=UTF-8" language="java" %>
    <html>
      <head><title></title></head>
      <body>
      <jsp:useBean id="testConnectionBean" class="test22.TestConnectionBean"/>
      <jsp:setProperty name="testConnectionBean" property="testUrl" value="http://www.google.com" />
      <br/><br/>
      Does the connection exist for http://www.google.com : <jsp:getProperty name="testConnectionBean" property="connectionExists"/>
      <br/><br/>
      <jsp:setProperty name="testConnectionBean" property="testUrl" value="http://www.thisURLdoesntexis.com" />
      <br/><br/>
      <%-- The following will give an exception : java.net.UnknownHostException: www.thisURLdoesntexis.com since the URL doesn't exist.
      --%>
      <%--
      Does the connection exist for http://www.thisURLdoesntexis.com : <jsp:getProperty name="testConnectionBean" property="connectionExists"/>
      --%>
      </body>
    </html>The output you see looks like:
    Does the connection exist for http://www.google.com : true
    I think it is better to handle the exceptions in the JavaBean itself, so now yyou can change the method signature of getConnectionExists , remove all exceptions from method signature but handle them with a try/catch inside the method itself.

  • Connecting to MSAcess database using JDBC in JSP

    Hi,
    I have created an Aceess database file (C:\db1.mdb) and created a DSN=db1.
    I could able to connect to the database and retrieve the information from the tables using Sun's JDBC OdBc bridge drivers.
    DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:odbc:db1").
    It was working Fine in my Standalone java program.
    But,when I used the database connection statements in my JSP page,it is not displaying any error message and not selecting rows from the Select statement i used in my JSP page.(The same worked in my standalone Java program).
    I executed the two programs on same machine.Database is also on the same machine.
    Can anyone tell me what shall i do to connect to the database(C:\db1.mdb) through JSP.
    Thanks in Advance

    in your code do you have any things that is suppressing your exception?? i.e. something lik
    try
    // do your stuff
    catch(Exception e)
    // do nothing??
    }if so you vont get to know of any problem that happened....
    also if there is an un handled exception the jsp page will sometimes come up as blank, because your print streem will be terminated abrubtly....
    this will probably happen if you dont have a try - catch block at all, or if you are not handling the exception that is being thrown.... try inclosing your code in a try catch block and doing ex.priintStackTrace() in the catch block to get the exception trace on the server console....
    also can you post some code for both your java client and jsp??

  • Using SQLJ from JSP in JDeveloper

    Hello,
    Has anyone succeeded in creating a JSP file by using SQLJ in JDeveloper 3.1 (Build 681)?
    In the whitepaper http://technet.oracle.com/docs/tech/java/servlets/jsp/whitepapers/jsp-oow99-paper.pdf
    it is stated that you can create an SQLJ-JSP by giving the JSP file the .sqljsp extension. This results in an "Fatal error: compiler internal error." in JDeveloper.
    In the same whitepaper, it is stated that you can also use the following JSP page directive to create an SQLJ-JSP page:
    "<%@ page language="sqlj" %>"
    This results in an "Error: (16) illegal character." error in JDeveloper at the mere sight of "#sql".
    Any help would be appreciated.
