Using Tiger and Mac OS9 (Classic)

I just got an old Powerbook G4 off eBay so I can run Classic. I miss Bugdom so much!!
Problem is it has no OS installed, so I installed my old copy of Tiger on it and updated to 10.4.11.
How can I install OS 9 on it? I have CDs of 9.0, 9.1 and 9.2.1 but it won't start from any of them. I read somewhere that the older Powerbooks will only start up from the original restore CDs that were supplied with them, and needless to say I do not have them.
I am not certain of the exact vintage and model, but it is a G4, 1GHz, 64Mb Video RAM 15" display with gigabit ethernet.
If anyone can offer some advice I would be very grateful.

All I have is a CD with 9.2.2 on as a barebones system with various utilities. I tried the drag and drop method but it didn't work well enough to run much. It started OK, but it would allow me to run ant 3rd party programs I tried, including Bugdom and Tome Viewer. Unfortunately I don't have another non-Intel Mac.

  • Can I use Tiger and Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro?

I have a 3 year old Mac Pro with 2 internal hard drives installed by Apple at the time of purchase. At present, I'm using Tiger 10.4.11. I've purchased Snow Leopard (The Family Pack with 5 licenses) and have installed it on my MacBook Pro.
I haven't put Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro since it is my main, workhorse computer and I have several older applications that aren't compatible with Snow Leopard.
My question is: Can I install Snow Leopard on my second internal drive and leave Tiger on the main drive? That way I could use either system by changing the start-up drive to the system I want to use. Is this possible, or advisable? Will it work or cause problems?
Another question: If one of the drives needs repair, could I boot up in the other drive and run Disk Utility to make the repairs instead of booting the computer from the original software CD? (I'm having a problem finding the original Tiger 10.4 System CD in my organizationally challenged graphic design and illustration studio.)
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.

  • Mac OS9 Classic Install Problems

Could anyone help me out here. I have a new iMac G4 OS 10.2.8
Went to install Photoshop - no luck as I need OS9 Classic - got the OS9 install disk - double click on the installer icon - get a message:
There are no localized Classic-specific resources to update the selected system folder, Power Mac G4 InstalléSystem Folder.
Donèt know what t do here - any replies would be appreciated.
    JamesT

You might want to check out this link below - Since I'm unclear as your system set-up, perhaps this will help. It sounds as though what you need to do is just install the 'classic environment' but you are going at it asthough you are trying to actually install OS9.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh763.html
If your drive is partitioned you could use the plain old OS9 install disks on one of your partitions - Until you are ready to bail on OS9 totally I vote for installing the 'classic environment' on your main drive, thus taking full advantage of Apple's unique OS interface.

  • HT204053 can I use more than one email address on icloud (using iphone and mac)?

I have an email account which seems to be using icloud, and I want to add another email account so that I can access it via icloud.  Is it possible to have more than one email address on icloud?  I have an iphone 5 and a macbook.

You can only have one email account for each iCloud account.  You can create up to three alias addresses, but these will still receive email in the current account inbox.  This explains how to create an alias if you want to do this: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2622.
You can create a second ("secondary") iCloud account on your device by going to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Add Account>iCloud and entering a different iCloud ID.  This will give you second iCloud email account but it will only be fetch email (not push).  Also, you can only create a maximum of three iCloud accounts on each device so this would use one of your allotted accounts.

    Hi all,
I have recently purchased a WVC54GC, i'm still trying to find out how to grab stills.

Download VLC for your favourite OS at:

open it, and go to File->Open Network, and type

For anyone else who stumbles across this, I can confirm that you CAN use this camera under OS X or Linux with both VLC and MPlayer. The trick is that neither VLC nor MPlayer knows how to prompt you for a username and password if you restrict access to the camera to only certain users (which explains why it seems to work for some people and not for others.
I posted full details of how I configured and connected to the camera from OS X at http://www.jasonkohles.com/writings/wvc54gc-osx-linux, but here is the nutshell version...
There are two URLs that this camera can provide video from:
    http://camera.address/img/video.asf and
    http://camera.address/img/mjpeg.cgi
They both work in VLC and MPlayer just like that (except for putting in the real address) IF you allow access to the video to everyone. If you have created usernames and passwords to restrict access to the video, VLC and MPlayer don't know how to prompt you for that information, so you have to provide it in the URL, like so...
    http:// username : password @ camera.address /img/video.asf
OK, I gave up trying to get the forum to not turn a colon and a p into a smiley face, so just remove any spaces from that url...Message Edited by jasonkohles on 01-18-200701:38 PM

  • I bought Final Cut Pro 1 long time ago. When I move back to Vietnam, I have lost it. I still have the the Final Cut Pro 2 (update) and 3. I want to use Final cut 1 because I'm still using my old Mac os9 what can I do? Please help me.

Can I download it again? I lost my series number too. But I think my registered name are still in your record.

Only FCP X is downloadable. Everything up to Final Cut Studio requires install disks.  You might try calling  Apple, but the software you seek is over a decade old.

  • AppleWorks, Tiger and OS 9-Classic

I have just had a system crash-long story - finally erased hard drive and started from scratch. I installed Tiger which apparently no longer includes Classic (OS 9). A good thing, I thought - didn't like having it take up space on the hd. At least I didn't think I did. However, AppleWorks 6 will not install - it keeps looking for Classic. Now what do I do? I still have a System 9 cd from when it was the newest system. Do I dare install it? Or is there a newer version of AppleWorks that doesn't need Classic?
    G5 Power Mac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Maybe when you quote a poster you should include the whole quote instead of truncating it.
I like iWork, it is a wonderful application, but did I every say it was better? I don't think so. What I said was, unless you need AppleWorks for the spreadsheet application then it is worth switching to iWork.
iWork has a much better word processor and presentation software. The graphics are immensely better and so are the templates. To reiterate what I said, unless you need the spreadsheet I'd go with iWork.
You've seem to taken your anger at Apple decision to start to move toward iWork and direct it toward me. Why, I do not know. It's Apple you're mad at, not me.
All I did was simply suggest an alternate software suite instead of AppleWorks that may better Jsorell.
Please don't take this as a personal insult, which you've obviously done. This post was discussed over two weeks ago and if all you wanted to do was help Jsorell you'd have realized the post had ended and there was not need to post.

  • Mac OS9 Classic

I recently upgraded to MAC OS X 10.4.6. Since the upgrade i haven't been able to open up Outlook Express to view my email. I get the message MAC OS 9 Classic cannot find a System Folder on your startup disk to use. It says about re-loading MAC OS 9.1 or greater. Not sure what to do and what CD to use. Thanks, Mike B.

I think the real question here is, why are you using Outlook Express for OS 9 when you could be using the excellent Mail application that comes with OS X?
But let's get back to your question. I am interested to know what you upgraded to 10.4.6 FROM. Did you install OS X directly over OS 9, or was OS X already on there and you just ran the Software Update function? If you just ran Software Update, that shouldn't have done anything to your Classic (OS 9) installation.
If your OS X install is a brand new install, were you previously using OS 9? If so, was it 9.2.2? It has to be 9.2.2 to be run in Classic mode under OS X. Try this: open System Preferences and select Startup Disk. Give it a moment to refresh, and see if one of the startup options is OS 9. If so, then the system folder is still available and just needs to be updated. If not, then it got moved or deleted somehow.
Be sure to respond with what you found out; I may have more ideas for you.

  • Updating tiger and mac os will not boot after download finished

    Hi all.
I updated my mac tiger os on my mac book pro last friday. There were approximately 10 updates to do so i excepted them and all downloaded and i installed them all.
I was then asked to restart so i did.
On restart my mac is now stuck with a black screen. The mac boots up as normal all the keyboard functions work. the cd drive works if i insert a disk and the the mac will go into sleep mode if i close the lid. I have tried everything suggested in other threads, taking out battery, ram , doing the resets etc. I have no video output via the dvi connection so i cant put a monitor on it. I cant reboot with the cd as nothing comes up on the screen so i cant do anything. I have returned it to the pc world store i bought it from and there tec repair guys had it for 3 days and couldnt do anything with it. I have spoken to apple and they are refusing to doing anything with it as its 3 weeks outside its years warrenty. I am at my wits end with this as i now have a £1500 pound laptop that doesnt work. The laptop has never had any issues prior to the updates taking place, it was only immediately after the update that the issue occurred. If i hadnt done the update i would still have a fully working mac. I believe some of the updates were firmware updates and its taken out the video controls on the laptop rendering the screen useless. Any help would be great.
    Jas.

One more question if you don't mind. I was just sitting here thinking about it, and I want to make sure i'm fully prepared when I get home later to work on this.
If I'm able to get the drive door open, and I place my Tiger disk into the drive, will the computer automatically boot from the Tiger cd when I start the system back up, or is there anything else I need to do to get the computer to boot from the cd. I was just concerned about the system not recognizing the cd in the drive with the start up issue I am having. Unfortunately I'm still new to Mac's and learning how they operate.

  • Using iMac and Mac Mini together to share screen and data

I may buy a Mac Mini in addition to my iMac 27" (Mid 2011), mostly so that I can use it for slide show presentations via a digital projector. But I don't have a separate monitor (or suitable TV), so I wouldn't be able to use the Mac Mini other than with a projector. Not a good idea. So I backed away a bit.
    TDM Mode
Then I found that I could use an iMac screen as a monitor if I connect the two via a Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable in Target Display Mode, TDM (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3924). A short cable costs $35.
Then I thought about those times when Photoshop is tying up my computer for hours while I batch process heaps of images (you can't use Photoshop while it is batch processing), and I wondered: why not jump across to the Mac Mini during those times?
I store all my data on external firewire drives. Nothing on the OSX drives. This leads me to a few questions. Assume I have the Mac Mini connected to my iMac in TDM via a Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable.
    Ques 1
What is the best way of being able to access my data files (on external firewire drives connected to the iMac) via the Mac Mini? A scenario might be:
    I've started a batch process on the iMac which ties up Photoshop and much ties up;
    I switch the screen to display the Mac Mini;
I want to access my data on the firewire drives, drives that the iMac is already accessing.
    Ques 2
Can I use the thunderbolt connection to not only transfer screen data, but ordinary data?
    Ques 3
Or should I run an ethernet cable between the two and set up a network?

One question, how does this affect syncing to iTunes?  Will it recognise the iPhoto drive on both computers (depending which one has the drive at that time) if I sync photo albums to my iPhone and iPad?
iTunes will always sync with the last iPhoto library that has been used on the computer. If you make sure, that the drive has been connected, before you launch iTunes, it will work, like Old Toad said.
Also, if I do it this way doesn't it become vulnerable due to not being connected at all times to time machine?
if you use the drive with the library the mainly on your iMac, you could exclude it from the TimeMachine backup of your Laptop. Keep it connected to the iMac, when you are not using it on the LapTop.
What would be the process if I only wanted to do this periodically and wanted to keep the main library on the iMac.  Could I work on the drive on the macair and then save it back to the iMac?  How do I do that without duplicating the files?  If I just select copy and paste, will it only overwrite the changed files?
You would have to copy the entire library back and forth again and again, or use iPhoto Library Manager, to merge the changes into the library on the iMac. It would not be an easy workflow.

  • What are analogous shared libraries that can be called using a call library function to user32.dll and lvtoolbox.dll when using Linux and Mac?

I am wondering if anyone is familiar with how to get similar information with a LV program using a Linux shared library as well as the corrolate Mac library to the Windows user32.dll and lvtoolbox.dll.  I specifically am trying to get system metrics such as screen resolution information and cursor information as well as being able to set mouse position.   I am trying to convert a LV Windows program to these other operating systems and I am unfamiliar with these platforms.
Thanks for your time - I really appreciate it.

There is no simple answer to that. On Linux you will likely have to call into X Server, which would be a pain to do, due to various versions and implementations of that. On the Mac there would be the difficulty that you can't call into the native ObjectiveC API but would need to find a Carbon API or something like that to do what you want.
If you seriously want to do something like this for multiplatform, you should bite the bullet and start coding an intermediate shared library in C. This library would export a LabVIEW friendly C API and access whatever system API you need to have for the particular functions. But multiplatform programming on this level is a pain in the ass, no matter what.

  • IPod and Mac OS9......Can It Work?

I have an old imac with an operating system of 9.2. I plan in the near future to buy an updated computer but before i do that i would like to get all of my 800 songs that i have on my old computer's itunes software onto a new ipod. I have read that the only way that an ipod can sync with an imac is if the imac has isync software, software which is available only to 0S 10.x users.
Does this mean that i cannot get all of my files from my itunes (which by the way is version 2.0.4, the latest version for my operating system) onto an ipod? If this is the case, does anyone know how i can get my files transfered to my other computer, or somehow trick the system and get them on my ipod. I cannot fathom the idea of me just throwing out 800 songs with my computer. I have to have that music. PLEASE HELP ME, WHAT SHOULD I DO???????

I've been trying that too. First, what model iPod do you have? Clickwheel? Mini? Video? Nano? (or older?)
Is your iMac running? If so, there are ways to copy the files.
I also have an iMac - the 400 mhz iMac DV SE from 2000, running 9.2.2, iTunes 2.0.4.
I've never had any luck with using the IPod as an external HDD for copying files (of any sort) to/from an OS 9 system. I don't know exactly what the issue is. I've formatted my old iPod Clickwheel (4G, 20gig) as a Mac iPod. No luck, via USB or FireWire. I tried Windows format. No luck either.
Note: This is after enabling iPod as a disk - via the iPod's preferences pane in iTunes.
The iPod shows the "Do not disconnect" symbol when attached to the iMac, and System Profiler notices it, and shows it as an "USB: Mass Storage (iPod)"
So, I bet Apple hid it from OS 9.
At least, that's all I can think of.
If you want to sync the songs to the iPod for listening, you'll need to buy an old (1st or 2nd gen) iPod.
However, since you're about to get a new computer, you should just move the songs outright. If your iMac has a CD burner, use that. (if so, iTunes can burn you a MP3 disc). You can also use a USB Flash drive, or external USB or FireWire Hard Drive to copy them to the new computer, then sync iPod to that.
Remember that if you did sync up your iPod to one machine, you can't copy it onto another directly. This goes for any iPod or computer. You can copy the files themselves however, just not via iPod.
Sorry not to be able to help more, but I don't think there's any way to sync a new iPod to an OS 9 system.
    Good luck,
    -Dan

  • Please help Internet goes down when using iPad and Mac book pro at samtime

When I am using my iPad and my wife is using her Mac book pro at the same time we both lose Internet connection. We are using a gateway 2wire wireless router supplied by AT&T. Both devices have the latest updates we have reset network settings reentered wep password rebooted router and restarted both devices with no luck. We bought both of them at the same time so we are new to the Mac world, not sure if it is related but our new 2nd gen apple tv also seems to power on for no reason even after I put it to sleep and the remote is put away so no accidental bumps. The apple tv is connected via an either net cable not wifi. Any info would help thanks.

The fact that your using WEP security could be the problem. Try switching your router security settings to WPA or WPA2 with AES. If you don't know how id suggest contacting your internet service provider to get directions on changing the wifi security settings. The iPads wifi chipset supports AES encryption at the hardware level which increases performance and battery life. I'm not sure about your Macbook though.

  • Anti-Virus when using Tiger and Vista

I am considering upgrading to a Macintosh Notebook and will want to run Mac OS and Microsoft Vista. If this is the wrong forum, I apology. I will be using Micrsoft Office 2007 Professional as well. The one question that I need answered is "Do I need to have a separate anti-virus program for each OS?
    Thank you for your assistance.

I'll disagree with this. While a true Mac OS X virus has not been written yet Mac users should not be complacent. And antivirus should never be thought of as protecting just the Mac user but also protecting other users by preventing the spread of viruses.
    Anyone remember the AutoStart Worm?
History tells of Mac OS 9 users being complacent (I was) and then the AutoStart Worm or Hong Kong virus hit Macs hard. This virus caused sluggish performance for Macs and destroyed files. It spread using a QuickTime vulnerability to execute its code any time a disk was inserted into a machine. Particularly scary was that some versions of this worm destroyed graphics files back when Macs were the overwhelmingly dominant platform in the Desktop Publishing industry. Nothing could have been targeted better. It's because of this worm that Apple will no longer offer the ability to automatically run an application when a CD is inserted (Windows still does). For more information have a look at <http://www.macintouch.com/hkvirus.html>.
    Protect yourself and your partner!
Sound familiar? Another reason to use antivirus is to help protect others. All decent antivirus applications for Macs also detect Windows viruses and macro viruses that can be spread through executables or Office documents. If you pass along a virus-infected file to a Windows user even though your Mac is immune then you're doing a disservice to the community. And remember, you're not passing along the virus just to another computer but to every other computer that person transfers files with.
Don't do unto others what others have done unto you!
They're called viruses for a reason and your Mac will not be immune to everything. I urge you to practice safe computing. You'll especially understand this if your own computer has ever been infected.

I have a Mac at home and PC at work. I want to be able to copy/update my contacts and calendar from work on my ipod. How can I do this (easiest possible way).
    thanks

the easiest way around this would be to export your contacts as a vCard from the software at your work and email them to yourself at home. then just drag them into the "Contacts" folder in you ipod. i don't think there is any easier way to do it.
    hope that helps,
